I seem to be getting sleep death on any kernel that isn't by glitterballs, anyone else? I really want to use other kernels but I can't due to the random intermittent shut downs.
You need to call AT&T warranty service to get your phone replaced. It is a known hardware defect. See other threads about shutdonw issue.
Unfortunately this didn't start happening until after the 90-day warranty was over, I only have insurance for it now.

Do you think this is the same for refurbs too?
If you initially got the phone as a refurb, the warranty period is ninety days through at&t though you may be able to still go direct to samsung. It would me worth a shot.

that's exactly my situation, so now the warranty period is over, is there any way to get a replacement?
Did u get a refurb in the first place. I got mine exchanged for the 4th time in I think 5th month after buying it.
Yes it is a refurb.
Refurb = Sent to Manufacturer and CERTIFIED as new/like new condition
So it does in almost all cases carry the same warranty as a new device

At&t states specifically that the warranty period is ninety days which is why I suggested going to samsung directly.

Nah. When I checked last, it was one year for new phones. For refurb phones it is 90 days.
On a side note, it is easier to deal with AT&T, than with Samsung.

My mistake. I think I missed that part of it when seeing it on phone.
Yeah, that's the risk you take (only 90-day warranty) buying a refurb from AT&T. As mentioned above, try Samsung and see if you get any luck.
just register your phone with samsung (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I897ZKAATT) and select the quick links -> request service. It will give you a summary with phone info and warranty status.
Luckily I had bought a refurb from a personal seller off of ebay. and still had a week left on the 90 days. So I registered with Samsung and it showed my phone was still under warranty. I sent it in and they replaced the TIB (Touch Input Board) I have had it for a week now and it seems the shutdown problem is gone. I got my original phone back in a nice black box that says galaxy s on it.

From when you sent it in how long did it take for them to get it back to you?
Lets see they received it 01/19/2011, replaced the TIB on the 20th, and passed all functional testing on the 24th. Received it on 26th. They send a prepaid UPS label 2 day air. So 17th through 26th = 9 days.

I don't know if this is the same thing but when after I lock my phone, the screen remains black when I try to access it again. I know the phone is still on because the battery starts to get warm while in my pocket. I have to hard reset to get it back on.
This has only happened while trying two ROMS (Serendipity and Paragon). I do not have this problem with Cognition. I have made sure that I am using ODIN to go back to stock each time (haven't Master Cleared yet).
Any ideas at what it could be?
I am sort of iffy about sending it in because after a flash to stock firmware and using it for a couple days, I have had no sleep death..

So I have one of the bricked phones post GPS update. I went to the store, the guy I talked to thought I was an idiot and it just needed a charge, which it didn't, and then referred me to the AT&T Device Support Center. So I called that number which then transferred me to the AT&T Android Specialist Team who then said that Samsung has a fix (which got my hopes up) and redirected me to Samsung. The Samsung rep was clueless and then transferred me to the Tier 2 Galaxy S CS Department and this lady said that Samsung has no responsibility for the update bricking my phone and that any official update will be on the Sumsung website and that this is AT&T's problem. She then went to say I can either go back and talk to AT&T or have send in my phone to Samsung and have them reflash it. I'm past my 30 days to return the phone and wondering what I should do at this point. Any suggestions would be great.
(oh and one of the reps kept asking if it was the 2.2 update bricking my phone...which I'm guessing implies that froyo is out? or she's a total moron)
Update: Called ATT warranty center again and got them to send me another phone. Reconditioned w/o back case or battery (is that normal?) and the guy was nice enough to waive me priority shipping. Name was John Perez sounded Indian, but he wasn't too bad. Supposedly the phone will have the GPS fix pre-installed on it from my understanding of what John said. Will continuing update how the phone turns out if anybody is curious

Go to an ATT store or call ATT support and threaten to cancel if they don't give you a new phone on the spot. ATT seriously screwed up and I think that by now, they realize it.
Hey, you posted while I was updating but that's what I did.
Yes, a refurbished unit usually comes with no battery sim or battery cover.
I keep hearing that samsung is telling folks to not take the ota update. How are we supposed to update? Kies is not released for the usa.

According to the Samsung rep I talked to, the only official updates from them are on there website and things pushed on air are from AT&T and not Samsung's problem.
Oh and thanks for confirming my refurb question!
I went in to the store, told them the phone bricked during the OTA update. After he saw nothing happened when he plugged into the charger of PC, he replaced my phone with a new Captivate.

The warranty stores around me don't service the Captivate so I didn't have a choice but to do it over the phone.
You could probably argue to at least get free faster shipping if they're offering anything slower than 2-3 day shipping

OTA = Over The Air.
Kies = Samsung software used for interfacing your phone to your PC. Personally, I uninstalled it after a very short time because I found it to be useless, however, others on these forums like it a lot, so YMMV. Not to be confused with drivers, Kies is a front end UI, kinda like iTunes, but if someone here uses it or likes it more than I do, feel free to correct me.
So got my replacement phone, the battery was completely dead when I put it in (was at 90% when the phone bricked). So imo the screwed up update discharged my battery and may have shorted something in the phone itself. Thoughts?
how is the replacement phone, is the refurbished phone works like a champ without any scratches/dings?
My replacement phone (unrelated issue) came back looking brand new.
I am not so sure they are refurbed...not yet at least.
Same here. The JH7 update bricked my Captivate. After the OTA download, the update started, then said "update failed. Your phone will now boot." But the screen went black, and boot never completed. Phone would not power on, and I tried two different charged batteries. Phone was stock -- not rooted, no side loaded apps, no mods at all other than market apps.
AT&T store was nice, but would not replace my phone on the spot because I was outside 30 days. AT&T warranty is sending me a replacement. The replacement is supposed to have JH7 already installed.
Also, I just ordered an iPhone 4 on a separate contract through my company, primarily to get corporate Exchange email. I can get Exchange email to work on my Captivate, but I don't like how my company's Exchange security policy forces an unlock password on my personal Android phone. So I will use the Captivate for personal use and the iPhone for work for the time being. Now I can decide through actual use which phone I like better. Until recently I was a committed Windows Mobile user, but I decided very early that WM7 has some shortcomings that I cannot live with. Let the early adopters clean up WM7, and maybe I will try it at the end of my Captivate contract.
Its unreal all the issues from the first update for us. AT&T really botched this one. Makes me think unless samsung does something we are going to be left in the dark as far as updates go.

edit:
btw, is it possible to see the internal memory card data and copy my data?
Phone is in better physical condition than my original lol
I'm assuming that JH7 comes from the last 3 characters of the baseband version in which case the phone was not updated. The GPS is better on this refurb than my original, albeit still spotty.
I was given those 2 options too, i chose to go with at&t and get a refurb. The Samsung rep I talked to also suggested that I go with the AT&T warranty first. And no I do not believe there is a way to copy your data off the bricked phone without physically taking it apart (which may void the warranty I dunno)

AND told me that I would have to get a gophone in the meantime if I wanted to use my cell
Ive dealt with samsung before when I had the blackjack 2 and they replaced my phone no problem. Does anyone know what the deal is or what the magic words are to get a new phone and not the same problem ridden phone I have now? Im sure theyll just tell me nothing was wrong with it...
Once you are past the 30 day return policy, there is a 1 year warranty on the device through AT&T warranty center. I did not have any issues with getting a replacement through the warranty center..
Not sure if you purchased the phone at an AT&T retail store tho
I did, but when I looked through my warranty information, samsung holds the 1 year warranty. I can go through ATT warranty center though and they wont give me this trouble?
I went through AT&T warranty without any issues - I was at 31 days when I had my phone replaced - received the replacement the next day.

Many replacement phones are new.
And it doesn't matter what you want - that is the warranty.
If you walk into a store, they generally take a new one out of the box and replace your old one.

They refused me, Again. I can't get the phone replaced. If I could get the damn key combos working I could fix it.
First, I am certain the monkeys on the other side of T-Mobile chat are reading prompts off a computer screen, so I had to go old school and acutally picked up the phone. Just got off the phone with T-Mobile tech rep (that's the first step, get past customer care) who said stop going through warranty exchanges as they are not actually being refurbished - they will still overheat and they will still have screen bleed. Instead, wait until the phone is in stock again and have a new one sent. No QC issues with the new ones and he hinted that when they start shipping they will have GB. He said the phone has been pulled while LG and Google work on "issues".
So if you are having issues and have been throug multiple exchanges, call T-Mobile, have a tech rep note your account to have a new phone shipped once they are available, and start checking every day to see when the phone is shipping again.
I REFUSE to go to Sensation. I think this phone is going to run circles around the Sensation once the kinks are worked out.
thank you for this information

Yea right. I was asking all over the place for tmobike to send me a brand new G2 instead of 6 refurbished piles of ****. Never did j get a brand new phone they said it would be a luck of the draw to get a new one. I think this Rep was blowing smoke up your ass.
G2x with CM7 and faux ..21 kernel
Actually it will come in a new box direct from manufacturer (new back, new charger, new usb) - There is a restocking fee ($5 if you have insurance)
That sounds like a good idea. I am about to try that now.
Thanks beggars. I may bebyrying this once it actually gets out again, just to see what people say about screen bleed because if it fixes bugs but there's still screen bleed, no point in exchanging it

It would probably be a good idea to
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Every phone I have received has had bleeding issues so I never rooted, but I would highly recommend unrooting before sending back. Also, now that I think about it, the rep never said anything about sending the bunk phone back - just said a new phone in a new box would be coming.
I am wondering if this is how they are going to handle all future exchanges for the G2X - meaning, everyone gets a new phone once they start shipping and the old bunk ones will go back to LG to be refurbed.
I was denied because i am not in my remorse period. Tried calling two times and got the same answer lol, was told i could exchange for a refurb only
I just got off the phone with the loyalty dept and he said I need to return it to the retailer I bought it from...but the retailer doesn't have anymore g2x's in stock, and has no idea when he'll get more. So the loyalty dept said I can void my contract if I wish...that's it...take it or leave it. He also said that T-mobile HAS the update from LG already, but that they are still testing and will not release it until they are 100% confident in it...which he estimates to be in the middle of July.
And the rep I spoke to before him told me that any problems with the phone are the USER's fault because you are NOT supposed to have more than 5 downloaded apps on your phone at any time...you only install more apps when you get bored with the ones you currently have. Ummm..WHAT?!?!?

I am technically outside of my 14 day remorse period (although i am pretty sure if I had to, I could argue that I am not due to a T-Mobile rep telling me I needed a new battery rather than an exchange), but that doesn't matter - I have had 3 warranty exchanges within 90 days so they are sending me a new one if LG starts shipping them again.

I think they mean desktop....remember windows phone 7 caused a similar uproar with it's live tile statements. I'm thinking 5-7 apps live on the desktop.
A guy at verizon said the samething to me when talking about battery life on droid x 2. He had a droid x. I asked to see his phone. He had dozens....he just laughed...said they are told to say these things.
I have had 1 exchange for very bad screen bleed. My current one has no noticeable bleed unless specifically in Draw! and looking for it. I recently had a couple episodes of the battery refusing to charge/connect via usb until I rebooted the phone. These symptoms appeared after my buyers remorse period was up. Another thing is I bought it at full price and I'm still under my old contract.
It has been getting hot, but not abnormally so to my standards. I could throw that in for good measure.
Do those that have been assured a new phone think my situation will qualify?

I bought my G2x on 4/20 and it's way past my exchanging date. Is there any way to exchange it still?
I haven't used the insurance option on a new phone in some time. I bought insurance with this phone. I am just curious if they send u cash or a new phone. Would love to get one without screen bleed if it would be possible with the new batch of phones.
I'm within my buyer's remorse period...but in my area, if I drop my tmobile contract, my options are sprint, but the only near-comparable phone is the nexus s, and I'm simply not interested in signing a contract based on that phone right now; verizon, but I don't want to pay $120/month for service (which is $30 more than I pay with Tmobile); or att (same cost as verizon).
If I stay with Tmobile, the only realistic option would be the Sensation...and the problems some people are having with that phone seem to be worse, considering software can't EVER fix a faulty screen that accumulates dust under it.
So I think I'll just make the best with what I've got...looks like I got onboard at the wrong time.
Here's to hoping things get better.
My One X has 3-4 stuck pixels, some light bleed and backlight bleed. It has also had a couple episodes of massive overheating while the phone has been sitting on the table, not in use.
I called customer support last week about doing an exchange after trying a store first. Since the phone was out of stock, they put a note on my account that I had called within the 30 day period and told me to call back this week. Evidently they can't schedule the exchange for when the phone is back in stock.
I called back today, and after the obligatory 3-4 transfers coupled with repeating myself 3-4 times, I was told that I would be charged another $199, and refunded the initial $199 at some point after my return was received.
I can't really afford to pay another $199 for the time being.
Reading back over AT&T's 30 day policy, I don't see this extra charge being mentioned anywhere.
Has anyone else run into this? The AT&T store near me still does not have them back in stock, so I can't do an exchange there.
The 30 day policy does not seem to mention anything about being charged twice, but it does say that refunds on returned phones will be issued within two months. Two months is a long time, and seems unreasonable.
I'm just wondering if others have run into this when returning their phones, or if it's something that can be circumvented.
Nope I had the same issue and they replaced it right away no money or questions asked

It wasn't a big deal to me and I was OK with it. But, I can certainly understand how this can put someone in a pinch.
Also, I just got off the phone with AT&T and the DID make a notation on my account that once the phone is in stock, they will send out a new one since I am having issues with this phone too. So if you are in need of an exchange and the stores are out of stock, make sure you call and get the notes put into your account!!!
I'm no longer an at t customer but was for a long time.in my experience I always got the best service in corporate stores the authorized retailer won't always help out. Hi. I bought the AT&T HTC One X off Amazon. Can I still go to the AT&T store for an exchange since I noticed a dead pixel?
No but amazon has a 30 day return policy.
Does AT&T's "one exchange only" rule apply to phones with dead pixels? In other words, can you keep exchanging until you get a phone without dead pixels? It seems to be a huge problem on these phones. I'm afraid to go back to the store and piss off the manager by rejecting phone after phone due to dead pixels.
Nope within the first 30 days warranty exchanges can be done in store.
So are there a bunch of problems with this phone or are a lot of people complaining about nothing? I sear everyday I look on this phone someone's says they are returning their phone because of issues.
Call it what you want but if you have to return it more than once that's horrible quality.
Trying to make a decision if this is the right phone to get....
AT&T website says defective devices must be returned within 14 days of receiving the replacement. Ugghhh. I thought it was 30!
Do you think they'll still take it back? They have been sold out because of the holdup at customs.
Hi everyone.
So for the first time, I plumped for insurance. Because I am so paranoid about breaking that screen on my S8+.
I've never had it before (I had Apple Care on my iPhone) and am just curious as to your experiences of T-Mobile's plan. I was toying with going with Samsung's Premium Care because it says they deliver a replacement to your door, but the Tmobile guy convinced me to try theirs instead.
What I'm wondering is what happens if you break the screen? (I'm guessing people did this with the S7E and the S6E).. Say I call Tmobile and tell them, do they make me send the phone off for repair or do they ship a replacement out to me and then we swap? I'm used to Apple Care where they would take the deductible and then just replace in store.
I believe the Samsung one is near to that (not in store, but they deliver the replacement to you) so wonder how T-Mobile vary. If it's the kind of thing where they are going to make me wait weeks to have it fixed, I'll cancel it.
Thanks.
I've been. T Mobile customer since day 1. I've had the regular & jump insurance since I had my G1. I've only had to replace my phone 2 times since then. Once from theft and once from cracked screen both times i had to pay the premium which was around $100-$200 depending on the price of the phone. Once the replacement comes you send them the broken one. This time around I am trying out Samsung's Insurance.
My insurance is included with my jump 1 program. T-Mobile uses a third party insurance company called Assurant. The deductible for for my S7 flat was $175. As the previous poster said, you fork out the dough, they send you a new or refurbished device along with a return shipping label. The newer the phone, the more likely you are to receive a brand new and not a refurbished device. The more expensive these devices get, the higher your deductible is going to be. I've never used another insurance before.

T mobile is doing it a bit different now for some reason if your device has defects they send the replacement to a tmobile store where they will inspect your phone before they give you the replacement its happen twice like this that ive seen . My sister just did it they just charged her the 5 dollar shipping fee since it was hardware issue but the guy said that their insurnace claims will be handled like that from now on , waste of personal time IMO but i guess saves them money from people trying to pull a fast one

This has been my experience as well regarding the process. I have been in a TMobile store when a huge argument have broken out regarding the need to replace a phone. So if I have any doubts I just say I lost it because I don't want any rep trying to be God.
This is great - thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be in the situation where I called them to say I had a smashed screen, they sent me a returns label and then I had to send the phone off and wait three weeks for it to be fixed or anything like that.
Do they tend to issue replacements fairly quickly? I'm on the policy with Jump. Not that I have any intention of using it but I'm paranoid about this screen!!!

That's the warranty exchange process. I agree. Completely waste of time.
For the insurance claim, once approved, they ship the replacement phone overnight to the house.

you gotta make a claim with the insurance company.
They will charge you whatever the deductible is. You pay that and they send you a phone next day air.
Get that new phone and put the old one back in the box and return it. All prepaid labels.
You can do this 2 times a year.

I just got my claim approved. Seeing as the s8+ juts came out, do you think I'll get a brand new device or a refurbished? Do you think it will be the same color as my current one?

I got another question. So I received my replacement device and it came in with all the accessories, including the afg headphones. When I send my old phone to them, do I need to send all the accessories with it? I'm wanting to keep the headphones at least
