Hello all, I am looking for a small group of developers looking to make an opensource port for the HP touchpad. I currently have an android tablet, and I'm looking to port android to this cheap yet powerful(debatable) tablet!
add me on skype: Rockinoutt93
look forward to working with you guys/Gals!
make it happen!
there is already a thread discussing this
Join the group from above, the more smart people working on this the better for the community. There will be some nice rewards for you if you are able to port it first and by yourself though....
will see what I can do =3
well based on the community gathering here im gonna go buy one at 99 bones i cant really go wrong.

For $99, even if it has no apps to download it's still a good deal. Much better than many of the nameless single-core Froyo Android tablets selling at your local pharmacy. None of those is as cheap as $99 btw.
I haven't been developing for very long, and am still learning, but I am willing to help with this project to the best of my abilities. I am also willing to donate to those who help this project become a reality.
I love you guys!!!!!
Best $99 ever spent

I just bought a couple 32gb TouchPads. Let me know how I can help!
I cannot post a link but there is a group of people working on this project over on rootzwiki. Might be nice if everyone got together.. Or possible had a race
Rumor also has it that the dev team over ay Cyanogen is working on developing a port for this as well. So there is definitely a lot of interest in this. There are even some dev teams that are trying to get Ubuntu/Linux to run as well.
I think that since someone was able to run gingerbread on the Pre that this should be something that someone could pull off. We will just have to keep supporting the developers and this will be an amazing accomplishment.

I lol'd at the "The TouchPad is the new HD2." Luckily, I have both now.
Also, I think the new name for the TouchPad should be the LootPad. I'm not sure how your guys' experiences were at where you bought it but it felt like a moment of panic on the Titanic as it was sinking.
I hope this thread will remain on-track with discussions of porting Android. The other thread started on that topic is a total mess now, as 95% of the 34 pages are about where to buy the touchpad now.
Very interested in following a genuine discussion on an Android port. I have an HD2 and can't believe how perfect the CM7 (and earlier Froyo) port is. You can't even tell it was ever a WM 6.5 phone.
This is already going on at Touchdroid. Might be a good idea to copy and paste their progress here. They only ask that if you're not deving, don't post, they have a lot going on. Link to thread below

After speaking with some of you it has become readily apparent that while many people are comfortable waiting for a full android release for the HP Touchpad, there are also quite a few people out there that do not want to switch to a full android OS but simply wish they could have access to the vast app collection that android has to offer.
For these people I offer a solution.
Palmdroid
The Palmdroid project is going to be an ongoing development project to bring a Dalvik like port to the Palm/HP WebOS operating system.
The goals of this project are as follows:
1) to offer a Dalvik port to WebOS that allows for android app emulation as if they were native WebOS apps much like Alien Dalvik on the nokia n900 or the app emulator of the blackberry playbook
2) Share useful information throughout development with the Touchdroid team as to help them reach their end goals and avoid conflicting and overlapping work as well as to foster collaboration and new ideas to speed the project along.
3)If possible (either worked into the project from the start or through later additions) provide the emulator as a download through the WebOS homebrew App catalog.
Now with the goals outlined I'll move on to how this is going to get going and what needs to happen next.
1) First and foremost... I need volunteer developers. If you have experience with Dalvik, WebOS development, Android development, UI development, C++, Java, Etc. I would like you to PM me with details regarding what you can help with. I have some java and C++ experience as well as a ton of web dev and project management experience but with alot of this I am learning as I go and if this is going to get done with any sort of speed I NEED your help.
2) I will be setting up communication channels for the dev team to discuss what needs to be done, share work, etc.
3) I will be setting up a web page (an extension off of my own since I can't finance purchasing another hosting account or domain name right now) where there will be regular updates on the status of the project as well as a section for the dev team as a repository for project related research, source code bits, group status reports etc.
Until the aforementioned steps are met this thread will be used to offer info, updates, and discussion related to development of Palmdroid.
I hope to have the support of the community here as we move ahead... i know I am new around here but I am very passionate about making this happen.
WebOS is a great operating system... and Android has some amazing apps... won't it be an amazing world when you can have both!
Palmdroid Coming Soon
-Roto-rooter
PS. this should probably have been in the development section but apparently I can't post there because I am to new here so forgive me. If a Mod would like to move it and give me posting abilities that would be fine.
I subscribed to this thread even tho I have no WebOS devices at all. But I'm intersted in this project's work (I'm not a developer just a "hacker") as the same idea was proposed in the Bada section, too. It seems quite a lot of work to do this, as it's not enough to port dalvik itself, a big chunk of android has to be ported also to make it work. But it's an interesting project!
Agree! I don't want the entire Android OS ... All I want is the apps running on a webos emulator.
Great! Thanks! I'll be watching closely!

while I probably cannot be of use for the development, I can be helpful for some other things. For instance, I am in the process of creating a logo for the project and also searching for possible devs. I will contact the touchdroid team and see what they think.
Brilliant Idea about starting the dev work
I would support this development and I am sure countless others who have just purchased $99/£89 HP Touchpads would do so. Once again thank you Robo-Rooter & Failhard to start this work.
Just got my 32gb Touchpad in the firesale. Really loving it so far. Having android apps on it would really top this device off. Good luck.
Have been using the touchpad for a couple of days and am amazed at the elegance and sophistication of the webos. Though an old android user ... I absolutely love the webOs interface.
Would love to see the palmdroid happen ... ALL THE VERY BEST GUYS ...
Thanks Robo-Rooter & Failhard for initiating this.
This would be absolutely perfect. I wouldn't want to ditch the WebOS but still be able to run Android apps.
You have my full support.
Great idea!
Great idea!
I have a droid (DesireHD) myself and comparing the droid's interface and webOS, I really like webOS. And looking at how the patches and O/C makes the whole tablet runs silky smooth, I really want an android app emulator. Current apps in webOS's catalogue is pathetic, but combining android's apps and webOS interface is the best one can get.
Subscribed. If I can't get the Android OS, an emulator would do nicely.

Yeah it will be great to those who want to keep WebOS

I am a long time webOS enthusiast, and I am hoping that I actually get one of the 6 TouchPads that I ordered over the last few days. I think your proposal is the best way to go, and would be way more useful, and probably easier, than a full dual boot android port. I just wanted to list some resources here to bring to everyone's attention. While XDA is the most amazing collection of talented Android and WinMo hackers, you probably want to enlist the help of the aces that live and breathe webOS. Here is where to find them:
http://forums.precentral.net/ Definitely the most popular webOS forum. All the homebrew devs and hackers hang out here.
http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Main_Page This is where all the nitty gritty is documented in a Wiki. I have known some of the webOS internals guys since the day the Pre launched, and they are very talented.
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=webos-internals This is their IRC channel.
Also, if anyone has not seen it, they have already got Ubuntu, including window managers, and apps like GIMP and LibreOffice, running inside cards in webOS. This leads me to believe that the Palmdroid concept is VERY possible.
http://forums.precentral.net/webos-development/292457-tutorial-how-get-ubuntu-touchpad.html
The nice thing is that lots of great auxiliary tools already exist to speed up the process, such as MetaDoctor for creating custom ROMs and Preware for downloading and compiling virtually any linux arm package.
Best of luck with everything. I am subscribing and will help where I can.
This is what I was waiting to hear!!! Let us know where to donate!

as the biggest supporter of android on the TP, I've started to fall in love with webOS, not gonna lie. I would definitely support this idea. Its always great to have options!
Ok so now that the new chromebook is now out and still waiting for the chromebox is there going to any development about it here on XDA? I mean since it is open source just like android it would be awsome since I can put the chromium OS on my PC and learn more about developing!
Any ideas, comments, or questions are welcomed!!!

If you are talking about the new ARM based, Samsung Series 3 Chromebook for $249, yes I would definitely see Android on it because it is ARM. We will have the full scale of google play applications available if Android is ported.
I am pretty sure that people will try porting Android on such a sleek, fast and cheap device...
Well not only porting android to it but also have fun developing custom versions of chromium os since it is open source as well! I would like to see a dev section for chromium here on XDA!

i started a similar thread a month ago ([DEV HACK IDEA] Porting over Android to the new Chromebook..??) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951114
many members have shown an interest in trying out the ported android, but no developer has come forward yet...i'll be getting my chromebook by the end of the month, and i'd be willing to develop a port myself if i'm given proper advice regarding it...
Well I am not just talking about porting android to the chromebook but have development for it just like android the chromium OS has unlimited possibilities as it is open source as well. Making chromium the ultimate customizable OS just like android!

Folks,
for those who may or may not know, my name is sooti, i've been a dev here building Android since 2012. I've build roms for galaxy s1, s2, s5, LG G3, Nexus 10 and more. In all of the device communities I've worked in, the majority of devs were nice, caring and were open to sharing the knowledge and helping out if needed, and I was always willing to do the same and have on many occasions. I have never hidden my work and have always immediately committed my solutions to github to help others develop faster and help the community grow, but since I got my Xiaomi A1 I've met a whole new brand of developers, who only care about getting credit and glory, have no interest in helping their fellow devs and even if and when they do, they force them to keep the code to themselves as well.
I will not name any names, but I think you can guess who, I am part of a team of devs, TEAM OREO, who have been working on our own to bring a fully working dt to the public and keep it open source, while another group has a fully working open source and is insisting on keeping the device tree to themselves. and while this doesn't violate Android rules per say, it violates the very spirit of AOSP and of XDA more then anything. We may understand companies like Xiaomi, Samsung, LG etc not sharing the rest of their source code due to monetary concerns but here at xda none of us are getting paid for our time, we are all working together to bring great projects to life for free for all to enjoy and modify and build new roms.
It really saddens me to see this and hope this is limited to this device only, although I suspect there may be some other XIaomi devices with the same bad devs.
My team and I will continue to work hard to bring you great roms and 100% open source so that you to can contribute and help this community grow.
We are currently looking for devs to help us get Camera working, which is the only thing missing, please contact me via PM and we will add you to our telegram group.
I hope to see better things in the future,
viva open source!

XDA developer and android enthusiast
We are also looking for testers. If you are interested, please ping me on Telegram. Make sure you know basic stuffs like taking logcat n all ?.
Regards,
#TEAMOREO
Thanks for all the work you have done for the community. I'm proud of the work TEAM OREO is bringing for the Mi A1 community and as a contributor to open source myself, I wish every other developer for the device would follow suit. I know this is just the beginning of the development phase of the device but I'm sure that other developers that will work on the phone will probably see your post and agree wholeheartedly. As a community, we must work together. There's no doubt that some people want all the praise and thanks from everyone. That's not how open source works. We aim to provide enhancements to our devices that the manufacturers are not able to give. And helping provide open trees for all is key.
I'm not giving up on the community. But I really want it to flourish. Thanks for all of your help in making this device one of the best I've ever owned.

TeamOreo will sure make bugless ROM soon
I have never seen such developers in my life who worked at late night to fix bugs @sooti @kunalshah @pranavbedre these guys worked very hard to bring initial Oreo
Hope this team gonna rock one day
Keep going and let's hope there's a valid reason behind for not releasing DT as of now.Looking forward for more ROMs TeamOreo!
@sooti
You and team oreo are here, so it's not so bad!

Point made, but this thread has only one direction of travel on it and its not a good one.

However, i have cleaned the thread and if this thread goes the way i expect i will close it for good.

You guys have no rights to ask for the source when you won't contribute anything to the source. All you guys are going to do is use it for other ROMs which will end up having the same bugs as the current LOS builds. So here's my two cents, wait till everything is stable, SELinux enforcing and then the source will be available to the public as Abhishek has said.

All other roms have their trees published which helps other developers to fix the bugs and help the rom become stable.but if every one wants to keep the glory and credit for themselves the community will get worser and worser

Your ok, I was actually talking to the guys before you
I came over from the axon 7 forums about a week ago. i have been on the boards and dealing with android since the days of the logitech review {honeycomb i believe}. my take on the maturity here contravenes the gungho nature I have generally observed on this message board. it reminds me of what I imagine a 50 cent water army would act like when not in the office. i normally just sit in the back and observe read and learn as I go but since this is turning into group conflict it is my place to speak up. Sooti, guys I am with you in seeing the same sad state of affaira. this is definately not how civilization is built. but worse case scenario if spoilers at the table opt for self-interest over interest of the community, thereby causing entropy and disintigration, you will be able to find me over on the cyrillic android board with base in .ru they have good comraderie generally and thats across device forums as far as I can observe.
Thanks for bringing that up front straight. I came over as a user from Galaxy S devices in the hope that the MI A1 would flourish on a free and open (source) community spirit. Unfortunately things are even worse here. I don't have the time to contribute as a developer but I'd like you guys to know that I'm very thankful for your team's openess and your effort to bring true open source to this device and not let personal intrests and politics get in the way.

Hey I've known @abhishek987 from Redmi Note 3 forums and he's contributed greatly to LOS for the device and developed one of the most stable ROM(Ressurection Remix) on RN3.
So give him some time, like said earlier he's holding it until the bugs are ironed out. So many ROM threads already created with the same bugs, what's the point.
He's working hard on our device and not asking for any money. Give him space
