Since I can't ask my question here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929646 because of the 10 message limit on the site, I'll ask it here.
Does this apply to the USA Alltel CDMA version? I have the a854 and I've been getting mixed signals from forums all over the web, Motorola and Alltel as to whether I'll be able to get an official update to 2.2 on my device or not. I'm tired of waiting. Could someone tell me whether this will work for me or not?

Well the official is released long back for ther Droid(milestone) did you change it from verizon to Alltel?
And the link you have for is Milestone which is the GSm version, the CDMA version is know as Droid
Since I'm on Alltel, the name for it is Milestone. It's the same thing as the Droid (since it's CDMA USA version), just with a different name because Droid is exclusive to Verizon. The only reason I haven't gotten the update, to my knowledge anyway, is because Motorola isn't distributing the update to Alltel and a few other carriers.
But everyone I have talked to has said "Hmm.. you have the Verizon Droid.. that's the model number for it". But I didn't get it from Verizon, I got it at the Alltel store. I even had to argue with Motorola on the phone yesterday because they told me I didn't know what I was talking about, and that I must have gotten it from the Verizon store because Alltel doesn't carry that phone. I'm guessing they are releasing it out to other carriers and forgetting about it?
Now, I'm pretty confused as to what steps I need to take to achieve this. Everyone keeps telling me "No, you have this.. you have that......" and I'm actually just really confused.. no other way to explain it. Do I try to find something that will work with a CDMA Milestone, or will anything for the Droid be compatible? Or are they both just the same phone, but different name?
I have already rooted it with Universal Androot and installed Rom Manager (Premium). Now I guess all I need to know is what to do from there. I have allowed superuser permission to Rom Manager, I pressed Flash Alternate Recovery and then pressed Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Then I pressed Backup Current Rom. Where to from there?
I see a list of roms, so do I just find one and install it? I see a lot of tutorials on how to do everything, but most of them talk about how the MMS isn't working and you have to go into the stock rom to get the MMS settings and then move it to the new rom.. kinda confusing, but I think if I have gotten this far I'll be able to understand it better if someone could just explain the rest of it regarding this particular phone.
I figured it all out. Now I have a full on Droid.

I don't get that part, lol.
Did you try going into system information and check the Baseband version?
If it's "3GSM.....09.04I" then I'm pretty sure that's a Milestone.
I'm pretty sure there is no Milestone that is CDMA, i can bet a $100 on that, you have the alltell CDMA droid
EDIT: ok i'm wrong, the phone is known as Milestone due to the fact that Verizon has exclusive rights to the name, but your phone is still CDMA and have to follow the Droid section, flashing a radio or anything with the GSM version will brick it
I didn't go with the GSM version since I have the CDMA. I downloaded Rom Manager and went with the Droid version. Had to mess with the APN but finally got everything working. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to get my old market back cause I'm now on the Verizon market.

I've been looking off and on for the past 2 months to get my own CDMA Milestone A854 running version 2.2 or better, and this is the first success story I've come across. Please tell me you still remember the steps you took? (and that it doesn't matter who my carrier is? Mine isn't among those previously mentioned)

MetroPCS does not have this phone listed in it's list of flashable phones.
How might I get this working? If I were to get my hands on a MetroPCS ROM for another android device, is it possible I could piece together a working ROM? Or does anyone have any other ideas?
It's currently set up for Sprint (clean ESN for Sprint, not that it matters much for what I'm trying to do).
....... no
one rom for 1 phone doesn't work for another. it requires work to port
Yep, I got that. I was more asking if there is something I can get from an existing metropcs ROM to clue me in onto what changes to make.
If I reset the SPC, upload a metropcs PRL, and I'm assuming change any wap settings to use metropcs's internet... is that enough? Or is there really more to it than that?

the answer is no.
WiMAX isn't even on MetroPCS. It uses LTE. There is just way too much difference in terms of radios and frequencies.

Ahhh. Thanks for the info. Guess I'll activate on Sprint then. Anything to get away from AT&T right now, service in my areas has been horrible for months.
Metropcs nexus S`
Well obviously the 4g portion of it is different.
Now the evdo and supposedly 3g should work on are where metropcs has it.
Its no problem otherwise you can do everything you can with the nexus, just at a slower Internet speed.
You should probably be able to follow a tutorial for a samsung phone.
Is it possible to get an unlocked CDMA Nexus S so that I can use it with Metro PCS. Which brings up another question, would Metro PCS allow me to use the Nexus S on their service?
Technically, the Nexus S as well as the Nexus S 4G are "unlocked" and can be rooted with no special hacks. I would imagine that MetroPCS can develop their own ROM along with a radio and make it available on their site if users choose to do that. I don't believe there is anything in Sprint's contract which would cause a lawsuit for doing that.
The question is if MetroPCS will allow this phone on their network... it's up to them but I don't see why not, as they don't make money on phones anyway (I think)

Why would MetroPCS make a ROM for a phone that is unsupported? They'd have to go to Google to make a compatible phone in the first place.
Why would they spend money on making a ROM for the Nexus S? That just makes no sense. A radio is also not open-sourced. Radios can only be created by Samsung or Google for the Nexus S.
Get your facts straight
Whoever asked the thread said nothing about ROMs. He asked if an unlocked nexus s could be flashed over to metro which it should be able to.

Hey guys I have ns4g just about everything works except for mms..if you want mms you have to use whatsapp...so if you guys can build a metro rom for the ns4g that will be great
Hello all,
I'm planning on picking up a D2G locally to use on AT&T. So let me get this straight:
1) Buy D2G locally.
2) Flash with 2.4.29 SBF using RSD Lite.
3) I would need to unlock the phone. Can I do this without having an active Verizon account to activate the phone? I realize I can get the code from various resellers but would the phone need to be active on Verizon's network or just previously activated on Verizon's network?
4) Apply the edit cellzealot specified here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16572174&postcount=22
At this point I should be able to use it on AT&T.
5) From what I read I should be able to install and use non-Moto ROMs.
My biggest questions are with steps 3 and 5. Could anyone clarify those steps for me? Is there anything else I should know? Any fixes for the reception issues?
Thanks!
Hi
This is what i have just got done with my D2G and it work great on att . I got 3.6 mb down and 1.8 mb up in NYC . On your step 4 you shoud do this its much easier : w w.mydroidworld.com/forums/android-hacks/8942-tbh-us-gsm-band-unlock-droid-2-global-pro-update-zip-public-release.html#post98026
Good luck !
Thanks, warlord002! I read a post mentioning that update.zip but didn't really look into it. Using the update.zip makes this whole thing a ton easier.
Any recommended ROMs?

If you're lucky, and the purchased code works, you just input it and that's all.
Sweet, thanks for the help guys.
The phone isn't for me so I'll need a stable, functional ROM. I mean stock's always an option, but if there are better ROMs out there that are just as functional I'd rather use one of those. Suggestions?
Can you please explain step two for someone that is new at cdma phone hacking.
Picking up a D2G tomorrow morning. Are there any updates regarding gingerbread and the old radio? Any GB based ROMs out?
Also any websites that can give me the correct unlock code? Seems like its hit or miss for the most part and only Verizon has them forsure. I guess I'll have to do some social engineering and get that code from them somehow.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Well, JFYI: if you're on AT&T, you aren't getting Gingerbread.
Otherwise, Gingerbread update was called off and will be released later (“soon™”).
There is the update.zip from that OTA update, which can be installed.
There are some ROMs in development, but not production ready yet (at least on GSM).
Have fun with your social engineering, mostly because VZW wants you to be on a contract for at least 6 months to get the code.
Yeah I guess I'll stick with Froyo for the timebeing.
The social engineering is failing pretty hard. Tried at least 10 reps through different numbers and they all tell me the phone needs to be active on a line. My best bet now is to add some cash to the deal and ask the seller (vzw customer) to have it unlocked for me.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Many reps are telling me they can't even generate the code if the phone isnt active on their network. How true that is I don't know...

Picked up a D2G a few hours ago. The seller was nice enough to get the unlock code for me from Verizon!
SBFed to .29, rooted, bootstrapped, radio patched, and flashed to hexen all in an hour or so. No issues whatsoever. The D2G's running great on AT&T so far!
Glad to see a few more folks using this hack. It works well despite a few bugs in the original release build.
i got my D2G this morning, and soon ordered unlock code from ebay.
the seller get me the code IMMIDIATELY, and it works!
and the TBH's band hack helps me a lot. i'm now using t-mobile happily
Pls guys help me! I've just bought MY D2G from ebay, seller send my unlock code from verizon, I put it.. but when I inserted my new t-mobile sim, phone couldn't see any GSM network.. i flashed it already to 2.4.29, so what should I do next?

Check here - one more thing to do before you can get T-Mobile on your D2G. Remember you will not be able to get 3G - only GSM, but it will work nicely (and battery life will be great). Don't forget to set the phone to GSM only in the settings - so it doesn't waste power to look for a 3G compatible network all the time.
Apparently you can rip out the radio firmware from TBH's 4.5.606 and still install it via CWM; it works with 2.4.330's baseband.
The question is whether it's possible to make a 2.4.330 update that also doesn't touch the radio firmware, so you could flash 2.4.29 SBF, update to 2.4.330 and then 4.5.606 without touching the baseband, and thus gain Gingerbread with AT&T.
Going through the exact same process! But I can't unlock my phone, I bought it on ebay, the seller said it was unlocked but its not. I tried two of the unlock sim sites with no luck -$20 and two non functioning codes .. Is there anyway to unlock my phone?
Only via Verizon.
you are supposed to be given 2 codes..just in case one of them doesnt work. i got my code form the unlock shack and no problems
Not going in to detail, but if anyone has any knowledge on how to, please hit me up. If you are going to post "its illegal", save it. Because honestly, I dont give a rats ass. Thanks.

Here is the short version. To unlock cdma phones, you need a donor phone to get the esn, meid, ect, and then clone them in to the phone you are unlocking. I guess cloning the ESN is illegal. And thats a must to unlock cdma phones to run on other carriers. I dont really know if its illegal since I own both phones.
I know a PRL code is needed... okay, I think a PRL code is needed. As far as I know b_randon14's mod spoofs it. Whether this is a functioning PRL code or not, I do not know.
As to everything else, you know more than I do already.

Try looking in HowardForums' Virgin Mobile USA site (under Sprint Prepaid) if you haven't already. Their information is very good, although it doesn't go beyond anything too "illegal." I would recommend it as a starting point though.
I know how to get it flashed over except i don't know how to get picture mail working. I have a few ideas but no funds to try them out. If anyone has an Optimus V or Samsung Intercept that they are willing to mess around with I'd me more than happy to try to help.

You realize that even if you get the Evo 4G activated on Virgin Mobile, it's not going to be "4G" anymore?
I would wait until the EVO 3D comes out for Virgin Mobile, and until we actually have WiMAX setup and working (if it's available in your area).

I've had my evo for almost 3 years and I've never been able to use my 4g. The towns I've lived in had 4g but it was only one strip through the town and I didn't live in the area that actually had it. Only time I was able to use it was once in Las Vegas and it just drained my battery so its not even a big deal that you lose 4G. Sprint is abandoning 4G anyway and going to LTE.
Here is a link that should help everyone get their phones on Virgin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620377
It's nowhere near illegal or that hard to do. I've been using my sprint Epic Touch 4G on Virgin for a few months with no issues (many people have done the same. As long as you are actually paying for the service you use and not cloning someone else's phone, you're legal) . Yes I have no 4g but all the high speed web activity I do is at home on wifi. There is a step by step guide to do it. Just search "epic 4g to virgin" on these forums. It's not simple for someone who doesn't hack their phones but anyone who's had to jailbreak an iPhone should be able to do it. It took a couple of tries for mine to take as I missed a step. Be sure to follow the guide exactly. Google "epic 4g to virgin" and select the guide from groovypost.com if you want a concise guide with screenshots.
Virgin just lanched some wimax devices so i hope we can tap into that pipleine as well. Now to get 4g working...

I have flashed a Sprint Touch Pro to Verizon. The ESN may not be in their system but the phone will program if the other settings match. It is not illegal to tamper with the settings that need to be changed. And you are right that Verizon employees will not provision the phone for me, which is why we have *228 . Here: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/htc-touch-pro/120970-sprint-touch-pro-verizon.html is the tutorial for flashing a Sprint Touch Pro to Verizon. Perhaps somebody here could figure out how differently things would need to be done for the Hero? And as I understand the Droid Eris is Verizon's slightly different version of the Hero. I've already tried and Eris roms will not flash, but they would likely be useful.
no it can not be done legally so we cant help you and you posted this in the wrong section. the only way this can be done is to clone the esn witch is highly illegal and a big no no on xda this has been asked several times before not only in the hero forums but on just about every other forum as well so you shouldve searched fist.

just call *228 1 and set it up on the account. it is a CDMA phone, I don't see why it wouldn't work. nothing illegal about that at all.
did I miss a part where you took it in to verizon and asked them to put it on your line or have you not tried that yet?
Verizon, no. Pageplus... yes. =-)
All alltel phones will activate on Pageplus, a Verizon MVNO. And, 90% of the time, EvDo (data) will work, too. Since the MEID isn't a Verizon MEID, you'll have to call them to do it (online activation won't allow it), but a customer service rep will.
Once the phone is active, you dial *22890, and it'll program. If it doesn't, you can manually program the phone. Just be aware that if you're flashing a Sprint ROM on an Alltel device (the HERO is made for both carriers), MMS can be tricky.
I have an Alltel Hero on Pageplus, and everything (even MMS) works.
Pageplus now offers a plan with 3G Data, too. Check em out.

Hi,
I'm actually not new to XDA, I 've been a member for about 3 years and used to screw with my old broken HTC G1 all kinds of ways. So ignore the newbie status, I forgot all the old login info and had to re-roll.
Anyway, so now I have a sweet shiny Droid 2 Global that I bought off a ebay for a very nice $149 buy it now in used but excellent condition.
It was listed as unlocked and obviously indeed is because I am running it on Tmobile with a tmob simcard in Dallas, tx. So, I can make calls, internet works and is ok but only on edge (2G), signal is generally pretty good overall.
My questions (after days of searching and reading up, don't tell me to search) Are these:
1. Am I already band unlocked? I can already use tmob's edge/2g, and I can see AT&T's 2g and 3g networks when I search but I can't connect to them or they don't work if I do i'm guessing because i'm on a tmobile sim and obviously can't logon to at&t.
2. If it isn't band unlocked, would doing so unlock tmobile's 3g or is that just straight up not compatible and never going to happen with or without a band unlock?
3. If not with tmobile np, can I get 3g with at&t? Especially since I already can see their 3g network when searching.
4. Wether or not I am running a custom rom or the stocker....
It says it's running 2.4.330 A956.verizon.en.us kernel android version 2.2 kernel version 2.6.32.9 build number VZW
Not sure if this is the stocker or a pre-installed XDA Rom. It boots to a clockwork recovery tool screen too before actually booting into android. Is that something added on or is it on the phone already?
Thanks in advance for any help, so happy to have a badass new phone to screw with.
1. Sure seems like it. You wouldn't be able to use the T-Mobile SIM at all otherwise.
2. T-Mobile uses 1700MHz. The D2G does not support 1700MHz. Period.
3. Yes.
4. 2.4.330 is stock Motorola Froyo firmware.
In your case it would probably be better to SBF your phone to 2.4.29 or 2.4.330, and follow the instructions in the band unlock thread to get you to Gingerbread with band unlock.

I would be very careful with doing an SBF to an unlocked phone. An SBF would rewrite the radio firmware and very likely undo the unlocking that's in place.
The only way that it would be safe to do so is if he still had the unlock code, then he could just re-unlock and re-apply the band unlocker after SBF'ing.
Thanks for the replies. So I guess i'm looking at switching carriers at some point for the 3g. Honestly the 2g isn't that bad though. Plus I heard that since att failed to acquire tmobile, they ended up cutting some deal to share some att tech with tmobile. So some areas will get 1900 mhz 3g at some point. Probably won't happen to me but oh well.
As for the rom, I don't think I want to update just yet. I have no unlock code since it came that way already.
If I get a code though, since it's already unlocked and rooted (i'm assuming),
Do I just toss the sbf file on an sdcard and run the update? I've installed roms on my old G1 but I don't know the exact process on the D2G yet.

SBF files are something else completely. SBF files contain images for every aspect of the phone, from Radios, to the operating system, kernel, and more. Think of an SBF file as a Windows CD. It helps to wipe the entire system clean and installs everything factory fresh.
SBF files reside on your hard drive, and they are flashed to the phone with a Windows app called RSD Lite. The current version is 5.6. There are links to it everywhere around the forums.

Not sure if you read my post at all.
I stated that the safest bet is to perform everything from the start, including the band unlock process.
Why the hell would someone need the unlock code at all on a device that was already SIM unlocked?
I bought my phone off eBay, unlocked, and I have no SIM unlock code stored anywhere. I SBF'd it at least 20 times by now.

Well in this case, this is good knowledge to have. I presumed that an SBF would essentially erase a SIM Unlock because it rewrites essentially every bit of data stored in the phone.
Looks like there's something else going on in these phones when they get SIM unlocked. It's nice to know that SIM unlocks are truly permanent.
I am getting a prompt now for the new OTA update. Will this be safe to do in my phone's current state then? I just keep putting it off for now because I don't want to lose any of the sim unlock or my data ability.
I know it doesn't do much, but I think it might help my battery life which drains 90% every day with only very light use and only 2g data.
It appears that I am going to be stuck on tmobile until 2013 but I can probably deal, or trade it... So I want it to be the best it can be without being fast on data obviously.
SIM lock state doesn't change.
If you're on T-Mobile USA, you definitely have the US band unlock hack performed and if you update you will lose it with no way to rollback to 2.4.x baseband.
90% battery spent per day is normal for Froyo. I get 26 to 32 hours with light use on 3G with WiFi and GPS enabled on stock 4.5.608, used to get 16 hours on 2.4.330.
Hmm, well can I flash the new one. I was reading this earlier:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437177
Would that do the trick?
Otherwise, is there a way to stop it from promting me from updating?
If you flash the 4.5.608 SBF image, you'll lose your US band unlock.
To disable OTA:
Rename /system/app/BlurUpdater_VZW.apk, /system/app/BlurUpdater_VZW.odex, and /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip by adding .bak to their names (e.g. otacerts.zip.bak).
Ok, I will rename those for now. I was using Astro and it said permissions no allowing me to rename so so I am going to try another browser app.
So is there nothing I can do to get this update done and get back on tmobileusa? There's a way to band unlock it again isn't there?
How many times needs one to repeat that
USA GSM BAND UNLOCK IS ONLY SUPPORTED ON THE BASEBAND FIRMWARE THAT COMES WITH 2.4.29 AND 2.4.330 FIRMWARE
?
Well that's retarded, thanks motorola/verizon for steering me away from ever purchasing one of you phones again. Looks like I will be trading or selling my phone after all. I had an offer to trade for a samsung vibrant which can be flashed to gingerbread and has a bigger, nicer looking amoled screen that I think I will go ahead and do that. Way to screw up your customer base motorola. I USED to like you guys.
Did you mean: “OMG I'm a US GSM user and I wanted to use a Motorola CDMA handset made exclusively for Verizon on my GSM network and Motorola are such jerks because they won't let me”?

Seriously. I have no idea why he's being such a big baby about this. The phone was designed to Verizon's specifications by Motorola. It was designed to not work with Tmo/ATT from the very start. This was known by everyone at the time of the phone's release.
We were lucky in the first place to even get the ATT/Tmo hack. If someone isn't willing to put in the work to accommodate the requirements of the hack then this phone isn't for you.

I'm not, man. I already know why this is and have known since about 5 posts ago. BTW I bought this phone off of ebay a month ago and it was 'listed as unlocked for att&t, tmobile etc' WTF am I supposed to think when I read that? Stop projecting your in-depth knowledge onto all people like it's 'common' knowledge. It's not. That's like saying I should know Obama's favorite food or whatever the hell else for example. I don't know that nor do the vast vast vast majority of people. You know who does know that? Somebody who looked it up!
The only way somebody would know that this phone is locked out of tmob's 3g is by looking that up specifically. I would like to point out that I had the phone for at least a week prior to posting at all, all the while reading up on how to get my 3g before the kind folks on the 1st page answered the final question I had about that (which is the only way I know that now). So it took at least a week of researching to discover this.... We should really close and lock this thread since it's just wasting space with my displeasure about this phone purchase. $5 says this whole ordeal is the very reason the guy was selling the phone in the first place!! (He said he was currently using it on tmobile when I asked if it was unlocked for tmob...)
