[Q] Purchasing returned tablets? - G Tablet General

Hello,
I've read a few posts about people purchasing gTabs that were returned to the store.
Is this from specific retails only and how do you track down those that have returned units? Are all stores willing to re-sell a returned tablet?
Thanks in advance. I have a gTab and my wife has decided she'd like to switch from her laptop. Hoping we can track one down for her.

Purchasing returned tablets
Sears outlet (www.searsoutlet.com) will display available tablets and they appear fairly regularly. The catch is they are usually only available for in-store purchase and they usually sell pretty fast. Not surprising, since they are usually priced around 279 USD.

The buy instore is really dependent on the store and the customer service people.
SearsOutlet.com had one about two weeks ago, I called the store to ask if they could ship it. The answer may vary but here's what you should do:
1. tell the automated answering machine, "Electronics" and "Store" or "Floor" (can't remember) , the Call center people you usually get can't help you and will just direct you to the Sales staff on hand. You need to talk to someone physically in the store. So listen for the option to talk to a rep on the floor.
2. Make sure they actually have the unit on hand.
3. Ask about shipping it.
a. The manager I talked to in Buffalo, NY(Scott Nash) Said that Sears will ship it for you.
4. You pay for it on the searsoutlet.com site and then give the confirmation number in the store, and I guess they'll arranged for a UPS Pickup.
I got it about 4 days later. If the people in the store give you trouble complain to @sears on twitter. Maybe they can help. They acknowledged me when I thanked Scott and Roland the guys who helped me.
Good Luck.
PS: Seems like you have better luck seeing them on the outlet site between 8 and 10 am, either they sell like hotcakes or its a bug. But I would see em in the morning and then not see the tablet in the evening. just go to searsoutlet.com and search for viewsonic that way you'll see the case too if you want it. you shouldn't get much else. click the one you want. if it says they don't have it in your area click view all available and click on the store info. the phone # will be there if you need to call them.

I picked mine up at a Sears store for $279. It was listed on searsoutlet.com, try "searsoutlet.com/d/products.jsp?md=srh_md&stxt=tablet" (I'm too new to post outside links). They'll show up there for a couple of hours to a couple of days. You should check once or twice a day and be ready to pounce!
It was missing the manuals (I already had the pdf's) and usb cable (I have plenty). So far I'm happy with it.

Thanks for all the replies.
Unfortunately our Sears is the size of a convenience store and they never had them for sale. I tried searching on the next closest location but nothing wanted to come up. Haha maybe we don't have any others here in Montana.
We do however have two Staples within two miles of each other. I stopped at one and the manager said they had nothing. All units had been returned to Viewsonic.
I'll keep searching, thanks again for the information.

Viewsonic at Sears outlet?

Has anyone bought one from their outlet center? Apparently they are customer returns. My question is, are they open box or refurbs?

Yes, people have bought them. And I think they are mostly just returned items. Probably all are good, just people hated the way they work out of the box.
Everytime I see one on the outlet website they are only available for store pickup. Has anyone gotten sears to ship them a "reconditioned" one?

I have an Outlet device - they are customer returns. As such, they could have scuffs and scratches depending on how the inital owner treated them.
I believe that these are "Closeouts" that you would see in the Clearance area in their Electronics section. As such, you have to pick it up in the store that you bought it from.
I bought mine online, got an email an hour later that it was ready for pickup, and then drove over to get it at Merchandise pickup. Mine was a first run, the previous owner had taken off the screen protector, but it was in good cosmetic shape. The previous owner actually had Androot on it, as well as Launcher Pro!
I've ordered one at sears.com and I haven't got a time to pick it up yet.
What do you mean it's returned items?
I wasn't able to see anything about returned item on the web site.
Please point it for me.
TIA.
Unlike roebeet, I had a pretty horrible experiences with the sears outlet. I to make about 10 phone calls to different departments and different stores. I waited for a week because they kept telling me the item will be "ready" in couple days. They all give me the run around. Even when I confronted them that me calling someone else will not help because I called that number already, they kept repeating what they just said untill I hung up. Half the time they could not find my order even after I gave them my order id, sale check number, my name, address, and phone number.
I kept calling the sears outlet customer service till I got someone useful that actually wanted to help me. I found out the reason that half the the people could not find my order was because they never check the "sears outlet" box when they searched with my order id. Because the last guy who helped said he had no trouble finding my order. He actually called the sears store that i was suppose to pick up the item from for me.
He got hung up twice by the sears store then came back to me and told me he will try again because he wants to get to the bottom of this. It took him 5 more calls to actually get to the manager of the sears store. This took him about hour and half. In the end he found out my order been canceled but nothing was updated and my credit card was still charged. I got my refund back but wasted a lot of time.
I guess the moral of the story is if you do not get a email in one day when the store are open. You should cancel your order to save yourself the trouble. If the sears outlet customer service cannot find your order by the order id ask them if they have sears outlet checked. Because there should be no reason for them to have to ask you sale check number, your name, address, and phone number to find your order.

sears.com (or a regular Sears store) is not a Sears Outlet store which is being discussed here.
Absolutely check your local store in their electronic clearance area....
All returns will go to the floor at a reduced price if it's just a return.
If the item has a problem, it might end up at the Outlet center.
I bought 2... 1 brand new at the black friday price and 1 returned.

When you say black friday price do you mean $379.99? The price on the sears outlet is $279.99. Because I would not buy this product unless its under $300.
This is actually interesting. I work for Sears and I'm in charge of processing high value returns between electronics/hardware. Our Sears Outlet site is simply a database of our 991 items ( clearence ). All sears outlet does is show you what stores in your area have that item at a discounted price, but it does also show what we have in our actual outlet stores as well. The only reason electronics get marked down is because they are last years models, or because they were returned/have physical damage/missing something.
One thing I can tell you for certain is that they are not refurbished. We do not refurbish computers ( or any device that stores personal information ) on a store level ( regular full line store, not a physical outlet center ). If the box has been opened and the customer has used it, it's not to be sold in stores, and frankly, even if it hasn't been opened, it's not to be sold either. It's supposed to be sent to a return center to be properly processed - and no, it will never come back to the store.
I mean, correct me if I'm mistaken but you guys have picked up these tablets at a discount at a regular store? They would absolutely not go back on the salesfloor at my store.
I'm not trying to spill secrets here, but it's a heads up for you guys. Frankly I'd love to know what stores are doing it, if I'm following this correctly. This is not only wrong for the previous owners but wrong for the second buyers. Which is why it's against policy. And like Roebeet said - how those programs were left on it - means it was blatantly processed incorrectly. This actually bothers me quite a bit...
I ordered a second gtab from Sears outlet @ 279. Picked it up at the Scranton pa store still I'm the shrink wrap. Looked unopened to me and not a fingerprint to be seen. The lady said it came from a pile in the back...? So I'm pretty sure I got a brand new gtab for 279.
This thread has probably ruined our chances of ever getting another G-tab for $279.

Wait until after 12/25....
Just last night I found them online in the "Outlet". I was going to place order but I fell asleep studying. This morning, I wake up to place the order and...they are no longer showing up on the outlet website! Like at all! Do disappointed. I guess now I am stuck with the 101 as it was in my price range, but 2.2 runs like crap on it, so I read, and it will probably never see 2.3 or 3.0.
I hope searsoutlet is only sold out of them. I have been looking on the site everyday for about a week and nothing...
Anybody else know where to get them for this cheap?

Thanks for the tip.

The Turkey Day / Black Friday returns are starting

Seven of them in SEARS today - looks like Black Friday returns are starting to come in.
What is the link for refurbs?
60,000 units times perhaps 70% returns = about $4.2 million cost for refurb sale and handling costs (minimum).
Not seeing how this ends well.... Perhaps people will learn not to release a product not ready and then release a very half-hearted update, while a few people that are not even paid make it a near great product.
I wonder if Viewsonic has accrued for this hit to their P&L in 2011? Viewsonic is nuts if they think Kmart / Sears, Office Depot and Staples will eat these costs.
All they have to do is get rid of Tap, add the Nvidia drivers, Flash and do something about the disaster of an app market portal. That last one is the hardest, but the others can be done NOW- not 12/19, which will probably be another half-hearted effort.
The sales and operations planning meeting for February will be very interesting at Viewsonic

My guess is Viewsonic may see a bunch of returns by retailers before sold to customers, but I did not expect the device to be pushed during BF, either.

I guess I'll be taking a ride to freehold and paramus! LOL!
WOW! The one from Paramus was gone when I clicked on the link. I just bought the one from Freehold.
Half of them are already gone.
Is there a way you can reserve these before driving to the store and purchasing it? I'd hate to purchase it, drive to the store, and it's gone..
Buy it online, the store confirms the unit is there, then they charge your card. You get an email that says it's available for pick-up. and you drive to get it. If its already gone, you don't get charged.

Seriously, at that price, you would be foolish not to buy a 3 day old device. I don't even care if it doesn't boot; I can fix that!

The online site doesn't give me an option to buy it, just print out a page w/ a tracking number and goto the store. I called the store and the manager and sales associate seemed kind of clueless about sears outlet, and said they didn't have any in stock..?
EDIT: I see now that you have to "Add to Cart" to reserve the item and order it online. Here's hoping I got it!
just tried to buy the one from marlborough, MA and I ordered it at 9:30 AM and the store does not open till 10 am. I still got an out of stock email T.T
I am willing to pay someone if they can get one for me. There are none in my area.
Well, I placed an order online and went to the store for pickup (fairfax, va), and on my way there I got a call that the product was defective and being sent back to viewsonic. Seeing as how I was almost there, I just went to the store. Spoke with the manager and got the same schpeel. "The customer returned it for an issue with wifi."
So, one has to wonder why it was up for sale if there was a problem with the wifi, and how they magically knew there was a problem after me calling and inquiring about it. It would appear that perhaps someone else wanted the tablet who works there, but who knows. Perhaps I should have just taken it and tested out the wifi on my own but I opted not to.. Moral of the story, don't call the store.

As of 1:30 pm Eastern, they are all gone except the lonely one in upstate NY that has been there for a couple of weeks. Its amazing to me how these units sold out so fast. I still need another so I check the website a couple of times a day.
Yes, they are all gone. I was able to buy one, but i had to drive 180 mile one way, so I choose not to do it.

Hey guys! Do what I did: Went to my local Sears in NC, talked to the store manager, purchased a gift card on the spot for $311 ($279 plus UPS shipping). He called the store manager in Michigan. Had the G tablet sent my house, it arrived 2 days before my birthday. The stores can accept your Sears can send ID on back of the card to the store in question and hopefully ship your device. Also sign up for the Sears loyalty card while your at it; picked up $10 bucks in Sears points on the spot!

[Q] Gtablet Recall as opportunity?

Is it possible that we will be able to get our hands on any of these recalled tablets at a discount anywhere, maybe from the viewsonic outlet website?
I have an archos 101 that I will be returning (mainly after reading all the work done by XDA on the gtablet) and I am looking to pick up a Gtablet. The only issue I have is that I don't want to pick one up today for $379 at Sears and then have them available at a deep discount some where else next week. I am ok if Viewsonic stops supporting it because I know there will be community support for a while.
Any suggestions on what I should do? Take the plunge or wait for a little?
If you see one at a discounted price, you'll be getting an excellent deal!
The problem with Staples is that they are not putting them up for clearance - they are sending them back to the vendor, even the floor models.
SEARS Outlet has been a great site for us and I would suggest that you continue scanning it every morning. But, the problem is that the chances of seeing a device near you are slim. I have never found one less than 45 minutes away from me and I've only see ones within a reasonable driving distance (1.25 hours) about three times in the last month.

I haven't seen one closer than a 12hr drive, so consider yourself lucky. I settled for the $350 sale price.
I haven't seen one on the sears outlet site at all for weeks now. When I saw it the first time I started researching and and came across this site. Then I knew I had to have one but by the time I realized that it was too late. Any chance that they will start popping up on other sites for sale after the recall?
Always check at ~9AM or 10AM ET each morning. By midday ET, whatever was there is usually gone.

Roeby, based on Sears discussion, the Gtablet is no longer being treated as a standard product where they triage and maybe sell as refurb. This process costs Sears money and then they have to wait for compensation from the supplier. Much cheaper for Sears to simply return the product as defective. Some may slip through, but only if the product is not scanned and falls through the cracks (anything is possible).
We seem to already have apparent evidence that Sears is sending returns back (or storing for a mass return). The return rate is absurdly high, but not too many available in outlets.
I see that office depot has the gtablet for $369 in store. Does anyone think that there will be a price drop after Christmas?
It doesnt sound like Sears is following the path of others....
They still units in the stores for sale and not a word about a recall.
I picked up 2 today for Xmas gifts... 379.99 + tax + plus 5X rewards points...
Viewsonic cases were 5.99...
I think this Tablet rocks... I use mine everyday and it's 95% rock solid...
Vegan Beta 3.... With everything including the kitchen sink installed.
If anyone hasn't used Touchdown Pro and has a need, GET IT! It makes this Tablet
rock!
If I could get the VPN to connect to my work's system it would be perfect!

[email protected],
I returned my Gtab last weekend for an exchange and found out that they are now $349 although they are showing $379 on the website.
I still keep mine and enjoy it every day after I installed the Vegan ROM. It really works great. I don't see any hardware problem at all, just some fixable software glitches.
I can't wait to run Honeycomb on the gTab though!
I paid $379.99 minus a 10% "family & friends day" discount!
Cheers,
Rayan
Personally I suspect that the only real issue is the less than satisfactory stock UI and the fact that you can use it without purchasing a contract from a wireless carrier.
Even the smallest amount of tweaking (Root, LauncherPro, market and flash "Super Thread works" ) of even the stock OS yields a very responsive and user friendly device.
That said I will be watching for a second Gtab at a discount but I suspect that those who have it will keep it. If I can make this thing perform then anyone with a little time and willingness can do so also.
g Tablet Manufacturing Defect

If the product is being returned by Staples why should I NOT
want to return it?
I also notice that the Scheduled Dec 19, 2010
ADOBE FLASH update has NOT occured.
Listen, Thanks for all the help - I appreciate it

Greetings, this may be something and may be nothing.
Just FYI –
I talked to Mike at Viewsonic support on 20101220 3:34p PST.
He advises that Staples had an in store warranty conflict and no manufacturing defect exists with the gtablet. The update scheduled for 20101219 is posted and done so in such a way that some folks see it auto-download with WIFI and some will not for approx 24 to 48 hours.
Mike also advises that the Adobe Flash update IS NOT part of the latest update however he says it is still in the works and will be updated soon.
I am still contemplating whether to return mine or not. I have had it for 27 days and it has been absolutely fabulous and beyond my expectations less the FLASH player.

What @rushless said is correct just checked searsoutlet.com and they had a G tablet for sale @ $279 but apparently it's only available for pick up and the "nearest store" was in Cupertino. But I called one of my local sears and they said they would have a good discount on open-box items. Of course that answer will vary because instore someone told me that the returns if they were like new they would just resell them with a 10% discount.
Check the searsoutlet.com between 9 and 10 am and you may find a good price for one.
Thanks. The outlet is great but the closest I've seen was a 2 1/2 hour drive. Does anyone know if they will ship it between stores? Does anyone know what viewsonic will be doing with all the returned units? They all should be in good condition and even if they update the software they still can't sell them as new? I was kind of holding out for all those returned items to show up for sale somewhere online.

I can't believe it, so i just received my gTablet from Amazon, and this is what I received. What a SOB, I wonder how many people fall for this and don't realize that its a fake.
Any advice on how to get my money back without any hassles, because the guy is probably long gone by now.

WTF! This is definitely a SCAM!
Sorry you got taken.
I have always found Amazon to be extremely helpful. Anytime I call them to complain/return something, they tell me to keep it and then refund my money anyway. I have gotten a lot of free stuff over the years.
It may take you some hunting to find the phone number for Amazon customer service, but it could be well worth it. I would give it to you but I have it at work and have only called them from there.
However, the fact that the marketplace covers independent sellers means you are taking your chances in a lot of cases. I only buy from people who are enough of a partner that Amazon does the free shipping and I have never been disappointed.
Good luck!
Ouch! That sucks. I'd recommend contacting Amazon's fraud department and their customer service department and seeing about what recourse is available to you. If they're unhelpful (though I doubt they will be as I find their customer service to generally be pretty good), there's always that friendly little thing called a chargeback which tends to inspire greatness from companies to help you.
It could just be an honest mistake. If you assume that Amazon ships 100,000 items each day, and that they have an efficiency rate of 99.999 % of items correctly delivered, then at least one person is sure to receive a wrong item in the mail.
The more items you ship, the more someone is bound to get something they didn't order even with phenomenally accurate item tracking. Amazon is generally very nice about this sort of thing. If they determine that it is their mistake, and if you live outside the US, and the return cost is excessive, they generally tell you to keep the mis-shipped item and then send the correct one along free of charge in a few weeks.
That item looks like the ZT-180 I bought off Amazon some time back. And yeah it sux huevos alright.
Was there an order slip inside the box from the seller? If so & it says Viewsonic G-Tablet then I highly doubt it was a mistake.
The main problem is that it wasn't directly from amazon, it was from a third party merchant on their site. So it makes things just a little bit more complicated and time consuming. I doubt it was a honest mistake, after checking the sellers profile I saw he had like 90% negative feedback.
After calling Amazon(good idea BTW I was starting to get scared), they assured me that if the seller didn't help me out, that I would get a full refund. So I guess that's good news. I just hate to go through the hassle, and wait even longer for my tablet, I just wanna play with it already.
I hope woot! has another deal soon...

Was it from bestwholesalegem? I ordered one too. Im sure it will not be an actual g tablet tho.
However i did read this today
"If the buyer has received an item that is materially different and have not received a response from you with return instructions, he or she may file a Guarantee claim for the purchase. Once a customer is reimbursed for an order via the A-to-z Guarantee, Amazon.com does not obligate that customer to return the item they received. However, you are welcome to contact your customer directly to arrange for a return of the item."
Quoted from the amazon sellers claim faq
If you can get around the whole moral issue i guess you might end up with a free chinese knock off tablet to make up for your lost time.
Or the seller will ask you to ship it back. In that case its up to you either just ignore him and keep it (which you legally can), or ask him to pay for return shipping (you can include price of gas/"handling") and ship it back. He probably wont be willing to pay the 30-40$ for shipping anyway.
Yea the seller was bestwholesalegem I see some of you were also tempted by the low price. I wonder how much much money he maid off with ...
Well I'm gonna file a claim now, and see if I get a response from the seller. I was so relived when I saw that the purchase was backed by the Amazon A-Z Guarantee.
Time to look for a new one I guess.

I doubt it was a honest mistake, after checking the sellers profile I saw he had like 90% negative feedback.

How does a seller with 90% negative feedback sell anything to anyone?

He was a new seller and had no feedback when he started selling. I'm a seller on Amazon as well and we all start with nothing. The price wasn't drastically better than everything else ($269.99 + shipping), and you're not taking a monetary risk buying through Amazon, only a risk of inconvenience.
i am interested to know how you claim goes
and how long it takes for it to resolve
I'm interested also as I was one of the ones that received one of those tablets. Since before I ordered from him I ask what the return policy was. He assured me I had 30 days to return the item if I was not happy with it. It came in, I opened it and immediately fired a email off to him advising him I was returning it as it was not what I ordered. He wanted to give me a credit, but I held out for the money refund. I have all the emails to back up what the conversations between us was for Amazon if I have to file a claim with them.
Good luck and hope you get your money back.
I have sold a few items on Amazon and I know thet they keep the money for a while, they don't transfer it automatically to the seller account - especially if you are new to them.
So Amazon doesn't loose nothing, you get to keep the knock-off. Just act right away, don't wait 2 weeks...

Sorry you got taken.
I only buy from people who are enough of a partner that Amazon does the free shipping and I have never been disappointed.
Good luck!

This is a good policy to go by, because these items are shipped by Amazon's warehouse team and all returns go straight to Amazon. There is no need to deal with the merchant. HOWEVER as an Amazon Merchant let me warn you that there is no special approval needed to sell like this. The program is called Fulfillment by Amazon, and any brand new merchant can sign up. Also Amazon doesn't verify that the units shipped through this program are genuine.
Just thought you should know.

This should tell you your report was nothing surprising to him.
I wouldn't bother with trying to resolve this with him, go straight to amazon and remember to leave him the appropriate feedback.

Never ordering from online T-Mo store again

I went on-line this past Friday to order the MHL/HDMI cable for my HTC Sensation from the T-Mo store. At the end of checkout I was asked 5 security questions...I flubbed the first question because I wasn't paying attention. Some of the other questions were kind of strange. i.e. They asked me if I knew a Anble S****. It was my family last name but who has "Able" as a first name??? The best I could figure was they may have meant "Angie" who was a family member.
Anyways, I flunked the security questions and was given a phone number and order# so I could call and verify the order over the phone. I had the call the next day because that office was closed.
I called and cleared up the order and then the sales rep who was helping me could not find the item I was trying to order. Trying to be helpful, I found the item on my own at the on-line T-Mo store but it had no SKU or part #. The sales rep also told me he could not access the same web site because they were restricted from doing so!!!???? I was thinking of e-mailing him the link to the video cable but he couldn't even get to it.
He had to put a note in my order stating what the item was so some other dept. could try to find it...
So predictably, 6 business days later (I paid for overnight delivery) I still had not received my order. I called 30 minutes ago and the sales rep told me the order still had NOT been placed yet AND it would take 24-72 hours (business days) before the order would be even cleared by another dept. Now what the heck does that mean?. I told the rep I was not very happy and a few other choice words.
At least I hope I get an e-mail when they finally find the cable and mail it to me...the next time I'll order from Hong Kong and probably get it faster..haha.
That sucks. You should at least get the shipping charge refunded or changed since it's taking them so long. Are these not available in store?
No MHL/HDMI cables at the local T-Mo store
Last weekend I did go to my local T-Mo store and they only had cases and screen protectors for the HTC Sensation. I was not really expecting too much since the Sensation is so new. I asked the sales girl when they might be getting anything in and she had no clue. The impression I got was she was not expecting any video cables to come in.
