When I download the recovery from my phone it downloads as a txt file. Do I rename it to recovery.img and push it that way.

EDIT nevermind I did the S Off method worked perfectly.

Glad you got it working. To answer the question about .txt on the phone, others have reported that using a different browser works for downloading the .img file correctly. I think they used Dolphin browser from the market.
I tried method 2 and method 3 above without success. Trying to go from 2.5.0.1 to 3.0.0.5. Attempts to boot into recovery and then reboots again and boots normally. Suggestions?
Try the ADB method?

No, do not use quotes.

don't flash the 3.0.0.5, you don't need it for GB. the reason I think people have been having so much trouble is that the recovery is overclocked, so some phones can't handle it. same thing goes for the GB rom, if it loops and hangs etc., just flash a capped 691 kernel after the rom and gapps, it *should* work.
OK NOW - TO ALL FUTURE POSTS - PLEASE DON'T, LOL.
AOSP MADE THIS RECOVERY AND IS CONSTANTLY UPDATING IT
3.0.0.5 CAN BE FOUND IN THE 2.3 GINGERBREAD THREAD
INSTALL METHODS CAN BE FOUND ON THE THREAD "READ ME" WIKI,
DIFFERENT VERSIONS CAN BE FOUND ON ROMREPO.INFO

ok Koush did, I know, but the version we are using is tweaked by him.
would you correct me if I said he made his rom, because technincally google MADE it, but he did in fact tweak it,build it,compile it, for the hero.
@aiwetir - 768
Method III worked fine for me. Just follow instructions carefully, and don't forget to do "su" first (lets terminal use root privileges).
I'm curious why RomManager doesn't update the version number. I know I'm using 3.0.0.5 because of the new orange text, but RomManager still shows 2.5.0.1
Anyone?

Ok, here's official clockworkmod and ROM Manager support
First, use odin or redbend_ua to flash this kernel:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//samsung/epic/zImage2
Then, open up ROM Manager and flash recovery (choose Epic!).
All done!
Note, using reboot recovery or adb reboot recovery will take you to a "stock" recovery. Simply apply the update.zip on your SD card and clockworkmod will start up. (This method is better known as fakeflash)
Starting up recovery through ROM Manager will take you directly into clockworkmod.
How this works for those that want to develop on this further and create kernels that are ALSO clockworkmod compatible:
I extracted a initramfs from a stock recovery. I modified recovery.rc and fota.rc to allow adbd (and other small fixups). I modified default.prop to enable adbd and root shell. I replaced /res/keys with a test signed version to allow applying update.zip files.
Here is my epic initramfs:
http://github.com/koush/epic_initramfs
One can build clockwork directly into the kernel if they so choose. Simply take the update.zip on your SD card and pack those files into the initramfs as well. I chose not to do this because I am lazy.
Thank YOu..
Nice to see you in the Epic thread Koush..
We now feel at home.. Thank You..
Thank you Koush. Donation sent for your hard work. Please no Drinking and Driving unless you have autopilot! lol
If you happen to use
Quick Boot that will also bring you to stock recovery. You can use the same steps to get to clockwork recovery
Using the volume down key press and navigate to the
apply sdcard:update.zip and push the home button this will But it will bring you to clockwork recovery. AFTER it installs the UPDATE.ZIP that is located on your SDCARD. DO NOT DELETE THE UPDATE.ZIP After its finished you will now be presented with clockwork recovery
You can use the volume adjust keys to navigate the options and press the CAMERA BUTTON to select an option
note: pressing any of the bottom row keys seemsto shut off the screen and turn it back on. so do not push
Thanks for your awesome work as well as everyone else who worked on this with you.
So what happens if update.zip get overwritten? You can't get into the clockworkmod after that right?
What do I about the n00bNL version 32 clockwork mod that's currently on the phone?
Thanks!

Good question I am not sure of. I would imagine all you would have to do is boot into the phone normal and re-install recovery thru rom manager? or even power off and do the camera power down and power button? Ill check that one
as for getting this installed
Flash that kernel thats posted as directed and follow the instructions
Yes you can delete the update.zip and just power down the phone and use the three key method
interesting though is that you have to use the old KEY MAP METHOD of power H key and smilie etc etc
lol

Well what I did was remove the update zip off my sd card, flash the mixup kernel and restarted my phone. I then turned it off, pressed the 3 buttons and it took me back into cockwork recovery build 32 version
Afterwords, I reflashed the clockwork kernel, and installed clockwork via rom manager
Just push it back over again. Adb still works in stock recovery too now.
Is anyone having market issues? I am trying to click downloads and I get a server error? Any suggestions?

Just to make sure because I didn't see it stated anywhere, is this based on the kernel from DI07?
This kernal works great. i was having issues with the 1.2 overclock kernal with clockwork but now its all better. Lets the ROM's begin.
I get an error after I chooose samsung epic from rom manager...says error dloading the recovery??

I've never used Odin before, but according to the instructions. All I would need to load is the PIT file and the zImage from the first post then update it, correct? is the zImage a stock boot image since the clockwork update.zip isn't installed yet. Is this boot method different from n00bNL's version? I'm just trying to understand the boot process. Thanks.
To make my own "oneclick installer" could I just take noobnl's clockwork installer (version 32) and replace the zimage with the one posted here?
I don't think that website is working... tried this mrn.ing and just now tried again... >.
I also get the error downloading message
The kernel isnt even under the .tar format thus odin doesnt even recognize it...whats a guy to do?
Okay so I went and got the latest working updates from everything and put it in a convenient package for you.
One Click Root Apk: Version 0.1.0
Radio: 2.42.02.10.29
HBoot: 1.47.0000
Kernel: 2.6.29.6 (up to 768 Mhz and its stable )
ClockworkMod Recovery: 3.0.0.5
CynanogenMod: 6.2 - No longer needed
S-OFF
Step by Step Instructions below.
The instructions are only for people running CynanogenMod and ClockworkMod recovery.
Unzip everything.zip to your sdcard
Also put Kernel.zip on your sdcard
You HAVE to install these in a specific order otherwise some things won't work.
Flash CynanogenMod 6.2 if you havent already. It has the latest kernel in it already which goes up to 768 Mhz. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731659 here's the new link
Install Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod recovery 2.5.0.1. Now you MUST backup with it.
Run the ruu included in the zip. this will give you the latest HBoot.
Boot into hboot mode (volume down and power button) and look to make sure it installed HBoot 1.4.7.0000
reboot
install heroroot010.apk
run heroroot.apk and it will give you darchstar's recovery and put a file on your sdcard called rootme.zip
reboot
reboot into Darchstar's recovery
flash rootme.zip
reboot
you now should have root and should have the super user app. if you dont then something went wrong and you should try again.
if you have root, download rom manager and flash ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1
restore your backup with ClockworkMod recovery
reboot
reboot to recovery
flash radio.zip
it will tell you to reboot after it is done.
this boot will take a while so be patient
reboot again
reboot into recovery
wipe dalvik
flash kernel.zip
reboot
reboot recovery
warning: there is no hboot s-on for the cdma hero YET. they are working on it though.
flash S_OFF.zip
reboot
you now have hboot s-off
reboot into recovery
plug phone into computer
run the following code in adb:
adb shell
mount sdcard
flash_image recovery /sdcard/CWMR3.0.0.5.img
exit
adb reboot recovery
reboot
done!

You really need to credit the people who made this stuff in your op unless you want to get infracted or banned. Also this is a pointless thread as these things can be easily found by searching. And you haven't developed anything here so this should be in another forum, not development. Seems like you just keep making threads in development of other peoples work for no reason. Way to go.

Im putting on the credits now and this is just a package that has everything in it so people DONT have to search for it so it saves them a lot of time plus it has step by step instructions 4 people who dont know how.. and there is no where else to put it otherwise i would.
Q & A would be a tad more appropriate since nothing is being developed here.
kk. will do next time. and if u guys want anymore of these packages pm me da details. itll be in q and a from now on
Since when is there a CM 6.2? The last stable release is 6.1. Anything else is unstably/nightly/unofficial

All you need to do is to
1. Download and install 4EXT Recovery Updater, and launch it.
2. It will ask for root access, which you must grant.
3. After granting it root access you can use it to download and flash 4EXT Recovery. You must have an internet connection for this.
4. The recovery updater app will now download 4EXT Recovery and flash it on your device, replacing the older CWM Recovery you have currently, it's that simple.
No complicated steps... just like running an app.
As for using backups made with 4EXT, yes you will be able to use them. 4EXT is 100% backward compatible with CWM Recovery. Even the location of your backups remains unchanged (in the folder sdcard/clockworkmod/backups)
Go ahead, try the steps i outlined above. Then let us know if you hit any problem (very unlikely though!)

Hey, i have a bit of trouble...
Just followed your guide to install 4ext recovery but the **** wont work...
I have downloaded the updater apk and installed it, i granted superuser access, then i pressed (in the application) "Online install | upgrade" then chose the latest recovery package and pressed install.
After that has been done it says: "Successfully flashed new recovery. Recovery.img was saved to sdcard/..." but later when i reboot to mine recovery i still have the freakin CWM 2.5.0.3 or something installed... WHAT am i doing wrong..?

See the above posts.... this method works flawlessly. But if for some reason you're unable to update from CWM, just download the attached file, boot into CWM recovery, and flash this zip from within recovery.
Alternately, you can also download the attached Android Flasher and flash the recovery (extract the recovery.img from the zip file) using it. It's a fast and simple method to do it.
I'm feeling extra helpful today, so i'll type out another method... Use fastboot (i assume you know how to set it up, otherwise look at my signature for link) to flash the recovery using the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
DOWNLOADS:
Android Flasher
4EXTRecovery_v2.2.7_RC5_Flashable.zip
The recovery attached is not the touch version, its the most stable non-touch version. Once you are on it, you can later use the Recovery Control app to upgrade to the touch version.
Hope this will solve your problem.
If your phone has the latest HBOOT and unlocked with htcdev.com then you must use the fastboot flash method as exlained above.
But for Revolutionary the regular app method should work just fine.

Word of friendly advice : You shouldn't go around asking for help in forums for other devices as you may end up flashing something that could bugger up your phone... There is a HUGE difference between the Desire S and the Desire. Don't go by the similarity in their names... We're a very helpful bunch over here at the DS forums, but i would kindly request you to take this query to your own community which i'm sure will help you sort it out. (Or grab a Desire S and start roaming these lands!! ) - just kidding.
Better still, why not PM madmaxx82 and ask the creator himself regarding 4EXT issues.

so why do you post it right here? I think in desire forums your chance too get a satisfying answer it's really higher. Btw I don't think that there is a really big difference, but who could tell you better than a desire (without s) owner?

Enigma, yeah i know it´s not a good idea asking in the wrong forum, but you learn from your mistakes right next i will pay a little more attention to what forum i post in!!
i think i should pm madmaxx as you said, maybe he can give some lovely answers!!

First I would download a rom and put it on the sdcard (as well as gapps for cm7), then you put it in download mode, hook it up to your computer, open the mobile partition and rename the recovery something like recovery.bak, then put it CWM and make sure its named reovery make sure that it has the .img extension. After that boot into CWM volume buttons and power button and go to backup and restore and backup. Then do a wipe and flash one of the roms.

It shouldn't be a bad file... But if you are installing a custom rom then you don't even have to download and use gingerbreak, since the bootloader is unlocked and all the custom roms already have root permission.

Also when you say make sure the recovery file has the .img extension do you mean I should rename the file recovery.img or just leave it as recovery because when I go to the properties of the file it does say file type is .img Also should I unzip it? Sorry for the all the questions but rooting my epic was allot easier than this and I just wanna make sure I have everything all set right.

Yea you should just have to put CWM mod into the mobile partition by booting into download mode. And don't rename it if it already has the .img file extension. Yes you have to unzip it, or just take the recovery file out and put it in the mobile partition don't put the whole zip there. And questions are fine. And just rooting the triumph is as easy as downloading and installing gingerbreak and rooting it so it's easy to root, it's just installing a custom rom that gets a little more difficult, but is still failry easy. But like I said if your installing a custom rom there's no need to root it.

You don't even need to root if you flashing a custom rom though. Only if your gonna stay on the stock rom.

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum.
Today I successfully perm rooted my Doubleshot...
Then I tried to flash CM9 Alpha 5 using CW recovery.. downloaded the .zip...
Flashed it.. hit reboot... and it wont get past the mytouch splash screen.
I've tried flashing other roms, and other alphas.. but they all don't reboot into the rom.
I can still boot into recovery and get into ClockWork..
Any ideas on what I can flash or do to at least get any rom running on here... I'm not even picky at this point... I just wanted something like CM7 or some AOSP.
Thanks in advance.

when you say perm root you mean s-off right?
im assuming he's s on....remember to take the boot.img out of the cm9 zip and flash it using fastboot. You can find out more info on how to do it here. Also apology accepted (this should be in general)

1) This goes in General. I don't know why the mods can't just add a Q&A board to remove the n00b confusion.
2) Fastboot the ROM's boot.img before booting up.

Can someone walk me through what to do? How can I fastboot the rom's boot.img?
I'm sorry I'm new to this, that's why I'm using my secondary device to learn. I've been googling anything I can find and it got me to through the root process but now I'm stuck.

Did you not read the stickies?
You have to take the bootimage from the rom that you are using and put in a folder and name it so you can reconize it. You follow the command prompt instructions they give in this thread. You have to have some knowlege of a PC in order to be successful. I had the same problems as you did. You can get it to work... Do you know how to use the command prompt for your PC?

You can just flash back to stock to fix it. Learn to fastboot, then run CM9.

Thanks again for all your help...
Last question before I fastboot, is it necessary to have the SDK or ADB to fastboot? Can I fastboot/flash the kernel using Hasoon's all-in-one-kit (the app I used to attain root)? Or is it too late since now the device wont boot and Hasoon "can't find the device"?
I have the boot.img I want in a place where I can locate it. Can I use the command prompt without the SDK/ADB?
Interestingly enough I was able to mount using recovery, and boot a new kernal... phone won't boot but at least it's stuck at a different splash screen lol "mikroms"..
I'm calling this progress.
*UPDATE*
Ok, got it!
I mounted the phone to my computer using recovery and used the Hasoon kit to flash the CM boot image.. then I rebooted and got the mikroms splash screen. That was because the last zip i flashed wasn't CM.. it was the MikRom..
so I went back into recovery, flashed CM.. now I'm good!

Of course not. 'Fastboot' is an 'ADB' command. BUT if Hasoon's tool 'can't find device'....that's an ADB error message and you probably don't have all the drivers installed that you need but he has the necessary files included for what you need for 'Unlocked" & recovering from a mess-up. You may as well go ahead & install ADB tho....you'll eventually need it.

I believe what you did is 'Flash' a ROM from MikROMs but the kernel didn't go because you have S-On. Take that same '.zip' you just flashed, look inside it and put the file named 'boot.img' where you can find it in the windows 'path' and THEN
'fastboot flash boot boot.img' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508556
You should boot up fine then.
