[KERNEL] ClockworkMod compatible kernel and ROM Manager support - Epic 4G Android Development

Ok, here's official clockworkmod and ROM Manager support
First, use odin or redbend_ua to flash this kernel:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//samsung/epic/zImage2
Then, open up ROM Manager and flash recovery (choose Epic!).
All done!
Note, using reboot recovery or adb reboot recovery will take you to a "stock" recovery. Simply apply the update.zip on your SD card and clockworkmod will start up. (This method is better known as fakeflash)
Starting up recovery through ROM Manager will take you directly into clockworkmod.
How this works for those that want to develop on this further and create kernels that are ALSO clockworkmod compatible:
I extracted a initramfs from a stock recovery. I modified recovery.rc and fota.rc to allow adbd (and other small fixups). I modified default.prop to enable adbd and root shell. I replaced /res/keys with a test signed version to allow applying update.zip files.
Here is my epic initramfs:
http://github.com/koush/epic_initramfs
One can build clockwork directly into the kernel if they so choose. Simply take the update.zip on your SD card and pack those files into the initramfs as well. I chose not to do this because I am lazy.

Thank YOu..
Nice to see you in the Epic thread Koush..
We now feel at home.. Thank You..

Thank you Koush. Donation sent for your hard work. Please no Drinking and Driving unless you have autopilot! lol
If you happen to use
Quick Boot that will also bring you to stock recovery. You can use the same steps to get to clockwork recovery
Using the volume down key press and navigate to the
apply sdcard:update.zip and push the home button this will But it will bring you to clockwork recovery. AFTER it installs the UPDATE.ZIP that is located on your SDCARD. DO NOT DELETE THE UPDATE.ZIP After its finished you will now be presented with clockwork recovery
You can use the volume adjust keys to navigate the options and press the CAMERA BUTTON to select an option
note: pressing any of the bottom row keys seemsto shut off the screen and turn it back on. so do not push
Thanks for your awesome work as well as everyone else who worked on this with you.

So what happens if update.zip get overwritten? You can't get into the clockworkmod after that right?
What do I about the n00bNL version 32 clockwork mod that's currently on the phone?
Thanks!

Good question I am not sure of. I would imagine all you would have to do is boot into the phone normal and re-install recovery thru rom manager? or even power off and do the camera power down and power button? Ill check that one
as for getting this installed
Flash that kernel thats posted as directed and follow the instructions
Yes you can delete the update.zip and just power down the phone and use the three key method
interesting though is that you have to use the old KEY MAP METHOD of power H key and smilie etc etc
lol

Well what I did was remove the update zip off my sd card, flash the mixup kernel and restarted my phone. I then turned it off, pressed the 3 buttons and it took me back into cockwork recovery build 32 version
Afterwords, I reflashed the clockwork kernel, and installed clockwork via rom manager

Just push it back over again. Adb still works in stock recovery too now.

Is anyone having market issues? I am trying to click downloads and I get a server error? Any suggestions?
@koush I am getting the market error in downloads.. I get server error after it states I use no downloads. Can ya help? Thanks!

usually is lol

Just to make sure because I didn't see it stated anywhere, is this based on the kernel from DI07?

This kernal works great. i was having issues with the 1.2 overclock kernal with clockwork but now its all better. Lets the ROM's begin.

I get an error after I chooose samsung epic from rom manager...says error dloading the recovery??
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

I've never used Odin before, but according to the instructions. All I would need to load is the PIT file and the zImage from the first post then update it, correct? is the zImage a stock boot image since the clockwork update.zip isn't installed yet. Is this boot method different from n00bNL's version? I'm just trying to understand the boot process. Thanks.

To make my own "oneclick installer" could I just take noobnl's clockwork installer (version 32) and replace the zimage with the one posted here?

I don't think that website is working... tried this mrn.ing and just now tried again... >.

I also get the error downloading message

The kernel isnt even under the .tar format thus odin doesnt even recognize it...whats a guy to do?

Glad you got it working. To answer the question about .txt on the phone, others have reported that using a different browser works for downloading the .img file correctly. I think they used Dolphin browser from the market.
I tried method 2 and method 3 above without success. Trying to go from 2.5.0.1 to 3.0.0.5. Attempts to boot into recovery and then reboots again and boots normally. Suggestions?

don't flash the 3.0.0.5, you don't need it for GB. the reason I think people have been having so much trouble is that the recovery is overclocked, so some phones can't handle it. same thing goes for the GB rom, if it loops and hangs etc., just flash a capped 691 kernel after the rom and gapps, it *should* work.
OK NOW - TO ALL FUTURE POSTS - PLEASE DON'T, LOL.
AOSP MADE THIS RECOVERY AND IS CONSTANTLY UPDATING IT

Method III worked fine for me. Just follow instructions carefully, and don't forget to do "su" first (lets terminal use root privileges).
I'm curious why RomManager doesn't update the version number. I know I'm using 3.0.0.5 because of the new orange text, but RomManager still shows 2.5.0.1
Anyone?

[Q] Unable to go into recovery..HELP!

I am currently using cyanogen 7 and I wanted to try stock but...... I can get into bootloader but I don't know how to flash a new rom without Clockwork Recovery. And even with cwr it will try to boot into recovery and just hang on the Google screen with the padlock unlocked. I tried several things but I just don't know if I can flash thru adb? I'm brave but still a noob.
ive lost my clockwork recovery before... youll just need to reflash it(via fastboot, adb, or the terminal emulator included in cm7).
How do I go about it? Again I'm a noob at figuring this out..step by step set-ups anywhere? Thanks.

Went thru all the steps-all good. The problem again is when I reboot and try to go "into recovery" I have no success. My phone freezes or just stays in the Google start up screen. The bottom keys do not light up; i.e. home, menu, back. unlike a regular restart. Ugh.
My phone refuses to go into recovery mode...after several different attempts. Hangs on GOOGLE screen after I attempt to go into recovery from the fastboot screen. Any idea anyone?

Which clockwork mod have you flashed? When I flashed to 3.0.0.5 I would get stuck at the Google screen. To remedy this go into rom manager scroll to the bottom and select all clockwork mod recoveries and flash the 3.0.0.0 hope this helps.

This is happening to me. I get the exclamation mark screen and the button combination you mention above doesn't do anything. Version of clockwork is recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.
I don't really understand how, in this situation, i could go back to stock or flash a custom rom. Hope somebody can help.

That works and I was able to go in and have a look at what was on the sd card from there. I don't have anything I want to flash on there, but i really wanted to know how I would do it.
Is that the standard google recovery i'm seeing, or is it still clockwork? Writing was blue, and going by what I read it must be google one as apparently you need to re-flash clockwork every time you are going to use it (or something like that).
God I hate going through the noob stage. I remember doing it with computers, and now it's my turn with android.

That is standard recovery from Google.
Clockwork currently has orange text, and does not require any fancy key combos to get into it, it just boots up directly.
Android 2.3.1 and up have a new script added to the normal boot process that overwrites any custom recovery images with the current stock recovery. Some think it's a safety feature, most think it's an annoyance.
If you want clockwork permanently, and there's no reason you shouldn't, in my opinion, then rename the file /etc/install-recovery.sh by adding .bak or something to the extension. This will prevent that script from running. Then, the next time you flash clockwork (whether through fastboot or via ROM Mgr), clockwork should stick.

Nightlies are pretty much stable, don't let 'nightly' dis encourage you. But if thats not good enough, you can download CM7 RC1. Yes theres a RC now. It's been out of alpha for a long time, they just didn't officially announce a 'beta' but unofficially (off the books) nightlies #1-40 were betas.
After RC1, the nightlies reset back to #1.

That's the stock recovery - hold power and hit vol up to get the menu.
I've been doing that, but nothing happens.
I did a battery pull, and it rebooted in 2.3.4
So what am I doing wrong? Do I need to change something before trying the update again?
Hold power and slide from volume down to volume up. But that wont do u any good you need to flash a custom recovery and reflash super user.

So I goofed something up on my phone?
Is there a way to do this without losing all my app info/game saves?
I was going to run a TItanium backup.
And sorry, I'm a total noob with this.
ROM Manager, would I flash an older ROM or the ClockworkMod Recovery?
At that point could i just install the update and re root with Shabby Penguin's one click and then get all my app data back from Titanium backup?

Nothing is goofed up if you rebooted into 2.3.4.
The update did not apply. Did you receive the OTA or download it manually?
If you are unlocked just flash CWM via fastboot and apply it from there.
If you are locked then you can go back into the stock recovery, hold power down and hit vol up (in that order) to get the menu and apply the update. You may want to ensure it is in the root of the sdcard and named update.zip.
The OTA does not wipe nor is a wipe necessary, so you shouldn't be losing any data/apps.
I got the update OTA, but not it's not asking me if I want to apply it.
I'm sorry I'm such a noob here, but step wise.
If I boot up with Vol UP, I can then go to Recovery and get to ClockWork Recovery.
From there do I just hit update from SD card?

Yeah, choose apply update. Choose your zip from the SD card and apply.
It will go through a series of asserts and then apply if it passes. If you've modified any of the checked system files, boot image or kernel it's likely going to fail.
Well, I didn't alter any of them on purpose
I used Shabby Penguin's one click root so I could use Titanium Backup only. (Although now I'll probably add tethering to the list) So I don't think I changed any kernel files.
It's saying it can't find the file. Whatever downloaded must have gotten deleted somehow. I may just download the update and do it myself like everyone else.
Just to clarify. I place the update.zip in the root and select apply update on the ClockWorkMod Recovery, and that's it?
I was waiting to just get the update OTA organically hoping it would avoid these problems, lol.

In CWM use the choose zip file from SD card option, then you can pick the file regardless of it's name.
That's it - if you are stock (other than rooting) it should apply without any issues.
You may need to reflash CWM and delete /etc/install-recovery.sh to keep CWM installed. I haven't looked at the update itself to see if it is installing the script to reflash the stock recovery.
I had this problem too. I rebooted and its back to 2.3.4. I will attempt to go to 2.3.5 today once I have more time and post my findings here. If anyone has any success please keep updating this thread.
It looks like I have to reflash CWM in order to restore Super User.
My bootloader is still unlocked, but it won't let me run/install CWM. How do I do this?
Jagar, I did finally figure this out after reading through the code in the rooting .bat that Shabby Penguin put together.
basically his file has the Clockwork Recovery image that you need.
Boot up in bootloader.
then type
fastboot flash recovery ______.img whatever image you have.
Then select RECOVERY on the bootloader menu and now you can install the superuser.zip file to re-root.
you might wanna just run the new one click again, make sure its version 2.0.. it will do teh dirty work for ya
Seriously Shabby, big props to you for automating that process. I learned much more from your code than reading through all those other posts
@gnuf99 although you succeeded in getting root , please do read the guides abt adb and fastboot. This will be always handy for you, indifferent of the device you'll use later.

First I would download a rom and put it on the sdcard (as well as gapps for cm7), then you put it in download mode, hook it up to your computer, open the mobile partition and rename the recovery something like recovery.bak, then put it CWM and make sure its named reovery make sure that it has the .img extension. After that boot into CWM volume buttons and power button and go to backup and restore and backup. Then do a wipe and flash one of the roms.

It shouldn't be a bad file... But if you are installing a custom rom then you don't even have to download and use gingerbreak, since the bootloader is unlocked and all the custom roms already have root permission.

Also when you say make sure the recovery file has the .img extension do you mean I should rename the file recovery.img or just leave it as recovery because when I go to the properties of the file it does say file type is .img Also should I unzip it? Sorry for the all the questions but rooting my epic was allot easier than this and I just wanna make sure I have everything all set right.

Yea you should just have to put CWM mod into the mobile partition by booting into download mode. And don't rename it if it already has the .img file extension. Yes you have to unzip it, or just take the recovery file out and put it in the mobile partition don't put the whole zip there. And questions are fine. And just rooting the triumph is as easy as downloading and installing gingerbreak and rooting it so it's easy to root, it's just installing a custom rom that gets a little more difficult, but is still failry easy. But like I said if your installing a custom rom there's no need to root it.

You don't even need to root if you flashing a custom rom though. Only if your gonna stay on the stock rom.

Keep root with JB update?

As we wait for the JB update in US, I was wondering if there's a proven method to keep root on note 10.1?

I updated via Keis (bad mistake!) and lost my root. Even worse, I lost the ability to boot into cmd -- every time I do the Control + power routine I get booted into Android Recovery. Without the ability to get my tablet into download mode, I can't connect with Odin.
Please help --
Either........ is there another way to boot into download mode?
Or........... is there a way to install cmd on my tablet without using odin?
Please....... I am not new to rooting but I need a bit of detailed description. I'm very afraid of bricking my lovely tablet.
thanks,
Barb

Thanks for the response -- however the process you describe does not work after this Kies upgrade. Volume down + power does not get me into download mode -- instead I get stuck in the Android system recovery (3e). (Same with the volume up+power.)
My only options in this Android sytem recovery are to:
reboot
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
I am wondering -- what if I were to place the clockword mod recovery zip file on my sd card and then use "apply update from external storage", or simply reboot.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I was also told I might be able to get into download mode through adb.
Thanks again for dialogue.
Barbara
No chance... Stock recovery needs the zip files to have samsung approval, not only that but it won't allow a different region rom to be flashed either.... Looks like you screwed the pooch on this little puppy...

So just to clarify, you are saying that it doesn't matter whether I can get into download mode or not (which I was able to do, with ADB), because ANY clockwork mod recovery file that I find will be unloadable (because it won't "play" with stock recovery)? Is that correct?
Don't want to sound argumentative, but does that mean that anyone who upgrades their firmware via "official Samsung" will be unable to root in the future? That's not too cool.
But if so, I can live with it.
Again, I appreciate your time.
Barb
I know with the S3 there is a root tool that allows rooting via ADB but I don't believe this has been developed for the Note 10.1 as yet. Everything is done via ODIN... Unless you wish to try the 1st method from this thread to get root access - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152 - then install a version of CWM manually...
Stock root is very picky about what it will or wont flash.... Even if you have a stock rom, if the CSC oodes, region, doesn't match it will error out...

No........ that's the goofy part of it. I had an upgrade waiting for me (under "settings, upgrade" and so I stupidly assumed it was the official jellybean. Wrong, wrong! I was simply upgraded to 4.0.4. I can't see any noticeable changes, except for the Android Recovery system having booted out my Clockwork recovery (and the root, of course.)
I've decided to wait a week or so until I get the official jellybean and then decide what to do.
It will also have given you a new template in s-notes - landscape and the scroll bar... It will also have given you the ability to use an exFAT formatted sd card... There were a few other tweaks but not too much...
