Hi i have mobile wifi router installed on my phone (came with duttys rom) and i was wondering if using it my network could tell and charge me extra?
I have an unlimited data plan but i know I could pay an extra £10 and then my phone could be used as a mobile boradband device, does this mean that if i try to use the mobile wifi router program that my carrier would be able to tell and block it or charge me extra?
Also is there a way to share the phone connection with a pc without using wifi and without having to buy the networks extra mobile boradband package because I will almost never use it but its good to know i have the option if i go on holiday or whatever, maybe i want to prows the web in the garden soemthing like that
no wifi works even if you don't have a sim card in the phone
just like pda's with wifi and no phone
just like your laptop connecting with wifi to the router
just like your desktop connecting with wifi or cable to the router
no its not that, mobile wifi router converts your phone into a router so your laptop/whatever can connect to it and use its data connection to connect to the internet, I was just wondering if doing this the network can tell and then charge me extra as they usually charge for using your phone as an internet access point
the connection from the phone to the laptop or computer is free anything wifi
the cost to go onto internet will however depend on your satat rates, just to be sure id ask your operator
Hi thanks for trying to help, but thats not what I was asking. I know wifi connections are free what I was asking is if my operator will be able to tell the difference between my phone using its data connection and my laptop using my phones data connection.
The reason I ask is that I have unlimited data for my phone.
but
you can pay extra money to upgrade your account to allow your phone to be used as a mobile broadband dongle
but if they can't tell the difference between phone using its data and pc using its data then there is no need to pay the extra money.
is this the case or am i missing something
Depending on your operator, there could be a max of MB's. So it might be 500 MB/month, but also unlimited internet. With that, you are able to use it without any extra costs.
Is it possible to somewhat put up a wifi network on your phone via some program (WiFi Router is one I think) and connect to it and use it ON your phone?
aaah teething
as far as I know they should not be able to detect it
but I could be mistaken
If the usage is large 500MB/month, carrier might suspect unusual activity. teething is paid service with some carriers.
I have a G1 tethered on T-mobile USA. I have talked to customer service. They said they do not support tethering but that it is not illegal. Their solution is to allow a soft cap of 10gb of data service with their unlimited plan and once you reach the cap they throttle the internet speed down from 3g to 2g levels. Not to horrible. I play all my online games with my G1 connection, Counter Strike Source, Perfect World International, Flyff, and download quite a bit of music and usually only reach about 300mb a day which gives me a full month of service before i reach that cap. And at the start of the new month I get reset.
I´m in the same situation.
I´ve got an unlimited data plan, which covers phone/PDA use, but EXCLUDES using the device as a modem for a PC/Laptop (tethering).
I´ve tethered it ocasionally, and it worked.
My carrier didnt charge me extra, nor blocked. BUT i know the risk exists. I´ve tried to research.
What i read is that carrier COULD tell if you are tethering by traffic analysis (one way is looking the user agent of your web pages request, which identifies yor browser), but that this traffic analysys is not practical, and most carriers dont do it....by now.
So of you tether ocasionally, you are safe.....today, ....until carriers perceive there is a number significant enough to make profits,of people tethering under a data plan intented just for phone use, then they can start charging you.

ha nice, well im gonna give it a go anyway and see what happens, its just funny that they specifically advertise to upgrade your account to be able to do this as if they can somehow tell. I dunno what mobile boradband is like in the us but in the uk there advertising it all over the place as if its someting people really need instead of something that is ocasionally useful, apart from in your case its mad how much you do through your phone.

thanks for this, if the only thing they can do to check is by the web requests of your browser surely there is a way to pretend to be opera mobile for example which should receive the full web anyway. Anyway as you say I won;t be using it much if at all so if i do fancy it i think ill just take the risk and see what happens worse they can do is charge me a little extra and i may even be able to avoid that by pleeding ignorance

I don't quite understand this question, you could use the program i mentioned to make your phone into a wifi access point and use its data connection to the internet then anything you like could then connect to it e.g. another phone, psp, ps3 laptop .....
is that what you ment?
Hi all!
I've decided that instead of getting a phone contract,
I will just buy an android phone, and buy Verizon's 3GB a month for 35 dollars for their Mifi, and carry it around with my phone.
I will then use Google Voice to text, and make calls.
So I have a few questions.. Will this plan work?
Will the phone have to be unlocked?
Can I make calls with this?
If I only use GV, (I'm guessing around 1,500 texts a month, max 100 minutes of calling), and some apps which require internet on the android market.. like youtube, or other stuff, will it fit in 3GB?
Will their be any way for me to check how much data is remaining from the phone?
And are there any flaws in this plan?
Thanks for answering in advance !
Anybody know anything about this?
Or maybe if somebody is currently doing this, or something similar, they could share their experiences.
Connecting a mifi to your phone to use internet is not possible. The mifi needs to install drivers on a desktop or laptop in order to work.

I know this thread is a little old, but seriously? I just got my mifi and, with no modifications I connected to my tablet, android phone, and linux laptop. Just need to know the password
Hello all, i want to have access to wifi at work (dads bakery) there is no wifi signal there, is there other alternatives to have access to wifi? im not familiar with this things do i have to buy something portable to have it i do have 3g with t-mobile on my phone.
not sure what type of phone you have, but you can tether your "phone internet" to your transformer.
i just did it while on a road trip from my wife's old Palm treo Pro i connected via bluetooth tether
If you have an android phone, you can try to use the Bluetooth tethering option, which doesn't require rooting the phone. If you do a search on the forums, someone made a nice step by step guide for it. The bluetooth option never worked for me so I had to end up rooting my phone and then downloading wifi tether. Downside is it makes your phone really hot and can cause it to crash or turn off. I'm super ghetto so I have the back case off my phone leaned up against a fan hahahahaha....keeps it at a nice 79 degrees instead of 110 degrees.
I'm not an expert at these things either, I just looked for guides on this forum and also youtube. Took me a couple of days to get it all working. Goodluck!
You could try a wireless 'hotspot' from one of the wireless broadband providers too.

Does your dad's bakery have internet at all? If he has broadband there you could just setup a wireless router.

Depends on how much you use your TF for that purpose but 200MB is very little. Becareful about getting charged overages.
I am currently a graduate student and I go out of town a lot. The place I stay when I am out of town is where I have no cell signal. Is there any way to reverse tether my HTC EVO Shift 4G so that I can access the internet and do my schoolwork without any cell signal available? I am a noob with this phone, so I would appreciate detailed instructions that even an idiot could understand. *giggles* Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

If there's no 1x/3G/4G (data), and no WiFi signal, then you cannot use the internet on your phone.
Depending on what your location is when you are out of town...ie a parents house or something... you could maybe get Sprint to give you an airave. If they won't give you one free you could add it to your plan. This is assuming the place you are going isn't like a hotel or whatever and is a permanent residence. I am not sure on the restrictions Sprint has as to where they will install one or if you just plug it in wherever you go or how they work. All I know is it is a solution to low signal in your house.
EDIT - Well right after I wrote this I looked it up quick and it looks like you have to have an existing broadband connection for this to work which isn't what you're looking for as this device is simply to increase call signal. Sorry.
I would say it is more of an issue of finding a way to make your computer broadcast wifi. I think this can be done with most operating systems... though I don't have specific knowledge of how to do it.

Are you running Linux or FreeBSD? If so, I can help. With windows, I have no idea.
So this would really only be of value if you were somewhere that only had wired internet. In this case you would be using your laptop to create a wifi network your phone could connect to, but if you already had internet on a computer why not use that to get your work done? In all other situations any internet your laptop could get your shift could get too, am I wrong? Unless you wanted to utilize another carriers 3G/4G signal, in which case I would buy a MiFi and get a plan with them.

Hello. I want to know if there is a way to use this phone modem in the Computer?
but watch out, I'm not talking about Tethering or using a tether APP like PDANet, etc. I just want to have my Phone modem available in my pc, so I can use it in an application and connect to the internet throught this software. I need it this way because although I can use, it Internet in my PC by several ways (USB tether, Wifi hotspot, etc) I need to use an Aplication to avoid my 3G speed to downgrade after I consume my quota.
You are not gonna be able to bypass the limit. No matter what you do there is no way to use the internet and make it look like your not.
Ok. That's what I think, but a friend of mine claims he has a software that trick your carrier, and I wanna try it. Anway there are ways (with applications and settings) to use the Internet of your mobile phone for free. Those methods need to access to your phone modem.
Since no modem appear in the device manager, just a network device, it is impossible to use those methods with this phone

You can't get free internet. If your friend knows so much about this special software you would think that your friend would have told you how to conect your phone. But anyways.....install HTC Sync on your pc and it will install the drivers for the phone to be used as a modem.

I dont know what trying to steal from the network providers has to do with android/phone development. You are best off to just either pay for what you use or have your friend that is bragging about stealing internet help you with doing the same.
personally i bet hes lying to you just to make you waste time trying to find a way lol

Forget about tricking you carrier about data quota, I was exceptic about it, and I think is not posible. but I am sure there are ways of having free internet in your computer throught your GSM network without paying a cent, at least in my country (A friend of mine connects to the internet like this). The thing is that you have to have a USB 3G modem or you can use your mobile phone, but you need to have your device modem available.
Yeah, its called tethering. But you have to pay for the 3G internet connection through your mobile carrier. Nothing free. Unless you BORROW your nieghbor's wifi.

OMG. you think you are talking with a little boy. I know what Tethering is. Look my signatute, it is a speedtest result that I got doing Tethering.
ok guys lets let it go. Bottom line is there is no way to do what your asking. No matter what you do, packets will be sent over the data stream and this will be logged. You would have to make all data packet have a size of zero and not hit any towers or the server. This is not going to happen. Every single kb your phone sends out is logged. From the small 1kb used for an mms to the 4mbs used for an app download.
Also there is no way to access the hardware phone modem. To be honest I think your friend is lying to you

Ok. About the data plan quota I'm done. I doubt you can avoid that. But regarding free internet in your computer through your GSM network, that is true. But as I far as I can see, There is no way to have this device modem available.
