Ubuntu will boot on the Sensatin.
Do a search. There's a whole thread on it somewhere around here, complete with instructions on how to do it. From what I understand it worked pretty well.
It's been a couple months since I've seen that thread though. So sorry, I don't recall which of the Sensation forums it's in.
I'll give it a search I'll let you know the results

hello this is the thread it's closed

Sorry guys this no longer works...
Ubuntu removed alot of the files needed to run it on a phone off of their website which is why you are getting the errors on the script to try and install it.
Recapped:
Here's what I mean the website the script is going to to get the files no longer exists...
Heres an example to see for yourself: http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports....9-4_armel.deb
I will try and find a new link to plug in but for now it DOES NOT WORK!
Thank you for your patience on the thread,
StrumerJohn
this is the backtrack 5 it's one of the Linux OS version best one for hacking stuff

As of right now, what is holding us back from porting gingerbread to our sidekicks? Is it drivers? Or a 2.3 kernel that runs? I need a list of what needs to be done exactly.

See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557094
And, here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/22310-wipcm7-for-sidekick-4g/
Hope that helps!
Thank you, but I've seen both of those and followed them to the end. I'm looking for a specific list of what is needed to port gingerbread to our device. As in i may take up the task of porting it
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA
Would probably be a good idea to continue where windixxi left off since hes the closest person to get ginger working on our phone.
i think i remember Sduvick explaining that the drivers for this device are not exactly generic, so we really need an official Gingerbread kernel from Samsung. i'm pretty sure he tried porting a gb kernel from another device, but without updated drivers for the SK4G, it was basically impossible. that's how i understand it anyway.
Thank you yogi for the info and yes pintek im aware of windxixi great work but i cant figure out his github at all. Its not labeled well.. so more or less its a drivers issue?

Basically? That's what I understood as well.
So instead of trying to port drivers we would have to write new drivers in theory since we don't have a source to build from?

It's no small job. Here's sduvick's assessment of the issue:

Thanks for the reading orange. Gave me the idea that the kernel is going to have to be a makeshift mix and match type thing from kernels from multiple phones.

I agree.
As mentioned previously, maybe windixxi can provide some insight as well.
You're probably going to need some experience and knowledge of coding (i.e. C, Python, Java) and access to a Linux rig of some sort as well..
Yes im going to setup a linux enviroment soon i was thinking ubuntu but i havent setup a linux in a while are their any better alternatives?

I recommend installing a hard drive specifically for your Linux environment and using the bios to switch between your boot OS.
But, I also have Ubuntu installed inside of VirtualBox. It's a bit slow, but it works inside of Windows.
so awesome that Samsung are such *****es about this haha
Sounds like i may be in need of a better computer. Ill see what i can do with what i have and start looking into kernels with stuff we need

I think there's a kernel guide here you could look at.
A OC/UV Kernel would be fabulous.

I might try that to get me back into the groove of things, things are going slow with classes though so nobody should get their hopes up yet. But if i manage to buil an oc/uv kernel sucessfully, then my next project will be working on a gingerbread kernel. Ill keep you guys posted in the weeks to come.

If you (or other SK4G developers) are interested, I may be able to arrange a build server.
As in a place to host the kernels we build?

Hey whats going on guys? So this is my first post because usually everyone asks the same questions in the other threads. I found it weird when I would open some apps and it would have this turn dial thing and say "please wait to prepare app for use" or something similar. Decided to download Kasperky and see what it found. It found 4 threats all in my system memory. I tried deleting it but it wouldnt let me. I have my iMac with me in my apartment. The windows comp I used to root is at my parents house. Is there any way to fix this? Im hurtin' :crying:.
Thank you in advanced!
GS3 and Mac do not play nice together. I had to resort to bootcamp.
As amazing as macs are, this is a biiig downer.

I know there is Rom toolbox that can flash a new Rom on your device reverting it back to either stock or a Rom of your choice that's all through the phone you can try that if you are rooted.
Or you can use the free version of mobile Odin and flash a new Rom etc

Google it...
But Bing is better...
Psych!
Google for the win!
If you need things such as ....
Source codes,eta's,phones,girlfriend or boyfriends,batteries,roms, fixes....try Google.
Atleast you can find the answers without causing a stir.
For sure google is great I googled my way to jellybean lol

i googled "build android rom from source" and got this website that tells you step by step on how to do it. I have ubuntu installed and actually its updating now but i will have everything i need by the end of the night and im hoping just for personal gain in knowledge that i can have a successful booting rom by saturday night. grant it that its nothing special to the devs or even the community but we all have to start somewhere right?
If anyone was interested my build won't be done by Saturday. I kind of accidentally messed up my boot partition and am putting windows 8 on my laptop then I will reinstall Ubuntu and try again. I came to a stepping stone though as I was in process of making a rom from source and may require some help. I hope a couple of devs may be able to assist me if I need them.

Yes Google is your friend, Thanks and Thread Google Closed.
I've been working on rooting my phone 4 a couple of days, thought I had accomplished all I needed and then realized that I was still s-off. my ultimate goal is to downgrade to froyo and then upgrade with unrEVOked to Jellybean. The biggest problem I have is that my windows pc is flipping out on me and all I have is a mac. I also have a newborn and can't even begin to try and figure out vmware or dualbooting or anything. My wife's already having a hard time with me trying 2 finish rooting my droid. I've spent hours reading everything I can (still very much a noob, don't understand terminal, c prompt, or flashing) and have probably been just really lucky getting to where I'm at. Other posts I've read are wither windows only, s-on, or not 2.3.5. Help, I'm desperate!! I really don't want 2 have 2 pay the guy on FB either. Any help at all is greatly appreciated since I know how valuable time is 4 everyone.
Thanks in advance!

Why do you want to lose S-Off? You should probably wait for some time until you can donate some time to this, distractions can be extremely annoying on OSes like Android.
Mostly because I've been having issues with a couple of apps not being able to work because of s-on. Maybe you're right though, I need to take some time with it. Got my Windows back up but it still doesn't help since my usb connection with my phone's not working. Tried multiple cables, renamed usb slot, downloaded most recent drivers, but nada.

I just tried to load a cyanogen mod and got a bootloop... Still think I've messed something up. Yay for Titanium Backup.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
Anyone have any ideas? I'm about to factory reset and try again if there's no other way. Thinking it might be a good idea since my usb is crapped out.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
If your USB slot(on the phone) is broken, you're pretty much screwed. Try posting in the evo 4g forums, they might help. And I don't understand what you mean by loading a cyanogenmod. Do you mean from the recovery?
Finally got everything working. My usb's data connection was hosed, different one worked. Windows is back up. Successful root to 2.3.7. Now to upgrade. Is there a way to get to ICS or jellybean from here?
