[Q] gingerbread - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

As of right now, what is holding us back from porting gingerbread to our sidekicks? Is it drivers? Or a 2.3 kernel that runs? I need a list of what needs to be done exactly.
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA

See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557094
And, here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/22310-wipcm7-for-sidekick-4g/
Hope that helps!

Thank you, but I've seen both of those and followed them to the end. I'm looking for a specific list of what is needed to port gingerbread to our device. As in i may take up the task of porting it
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA

Would probably be a good idea to continue where windixxi left off since hes the closest person to get ginger working on our phone.

i think i remember Sduvick explaining that the drivers for this device are not exactly generic, so we really need an official Gingerbread kernel from Samsung. i'm pretty sure he tried porting a gb kernel from another device, but without updated drivers for the SK4G, it was basically impossible. that's how i understand it anyway.

Thank you yogi for the info and yes pintek im aware of windxixi great work but i cant figure out his github at all. Its not labeled well.. so more or less its a drivers issue?

Basically? That's what I understood as well.

So instead of trying to port drivers we would have to write new drivers in theory since we don't have a source to build from?

It's no small job. Here's sduvick's assessment of the issue:

Thanks for the reading orange. Gave me the idea that the kernel is going to have to be a makeshift mix and match type thing from kernels from multiple phones.

I agree.
As mentioned previously, maybe windixxi can provide some insight as well.
You're probably going to need some experience and knowledge of coding (i.e. C, Python, Java) and access to a Linux rig of some sort as well..

Yes im going to setup a linux enviroment soon i was thinking ubuntu but i havent setup a linux in a while are their any better alternatives?

I recommend installing a hard drive specifically for your Linux environment and using the bios to switch between your boot OS.
But, I also have Ubuntu installed inside of VirtualBox. It's a bit slow, but it works inside of Windows.

so awesome that Samsung are such *****es about this haha

Sounds like i may be in need of a better computer. Ill see what i can do with what i have and start looking into kernels with stuff we need

I think there's a kernel guide here you could look at.
A OC/UV Kernel would be fabulous.

I might try that to get me back into the groove of things, things are going slow with classes though so nobody should get their hopes up yet. But if i manage to buil an oc/uv kernel sucessfully, then my next project will be working on a gingerbread kernel. Ill keep you guys posted in the weeks to come.

If you (or other SK4G developers) are interested, I may be able to arrange a build server.

As in a place to host the kernels we build?

[Q] MT4GS Custom ROMS? Overclocking kernel? Over clocking Kernel Module?

Now that the MT4GS is rooted, when are the custom ROMS coming out?
When is an overclocking kernel coming out? Are we waiting for HTC to release the source? For the time being, can we at least get a kernel module that will allow us to overclock?
That's the $1 million question. Shouldn't be long now...
I hope that when cm7 gets ported that they can do something to make the default camera app better.
I'll just be happy if they allow us to use the original camera app it comes with. I've kinda gotten use to sweep shot

He posted a beta ROM if anyone wants to try it. I'm downloading it right now and will post results. Make sure to do a NANdroid backup first!
Are we waiting on HTC to release the source code? Can someone compile a kernel module instead to allow overclocking?

Yeah, Ace tried his best but it seems like there was an incompatibility with the installer script he was using and our new version of CWM recovery. I hate waiting but I'm sure it won't be too long before there are custom ROMs or at least overclocked kernels for us to dink around with!

"Different hardware" is not the whole story. Look at LinuxBozo's Galaxy ROM Hellraiser Beta9. A user managed to flash Samsung based Captivate/Vibrant ROMs (obviously, you've got to "make sure it's Samsung Gingerbread based" {-LinxBozo}).

Much of the ui can be ported. But I don't know if using the whole rom while adding infuse libs has been tried or is likely to work. I think there are just too many differences. But if you feel motivated then try it. Start pulling in libs and bins from infuse roms and make sure you have the unbrick package ready. But remember to use an infuse kernel and modem.

I actually want to try it someday. The only problem is that I'm still not too savvy on this, so I don't know anything about pushing libs and bins and everything else. Flashing the kernel and modem, I have no problem with. It's the other files I have to get together... Oh well.

That's because the Infuse hardware is much closer to the I9000/Captivate than to the GS2.

Hmm... Interesting. I tried SensatioN with Hellraiser yesterday, and I had some info on the "about phone" section (don't remember if I had it all), and that modem and tweak setup, I'm gonna have to give it a try. I'm currently in stock because, yesterday, I was feeling defiant and tried to flash a JVS ROM from the i9000 forum with Hellraiser, as opposed to a JVQ, and ended up in an eternal bootloop. I was a bit tired so I just returned to stock and went to sleep. I'm gonna see if I give it a second try today in the afternoon. And also, I don't know why, my SensatioN was lagging a bit. I should've rebooted my phone a couple of times (instead of immediately making a call after rebooting the first time) to create some stability. I might give it a second try later today. I'll let you know how it goes. (I'm feeling sooo defiant this week. I WANT to make a JVS/JVR ROM work. All the JVQ ROMs I found, weren't very appealing, or were left in the dust by the devs.) lol
I had the same problem so went to the i9000 sensation and no problems worked beautifully very nice rom
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I give up. I tried to flash a JVS ROM by flashing a stock JVS i9000 ROM, and flashing two other .zip files, then Hellraiser, but, one of them, CWM would abort every time I tried to flash it, so it got stuck in bootloop also. I'm gonna try SensatioN one more time. If I fail to make it work again, I'm going to stick to Infused. I hope someone manages to port SGSII ROMs for Infuse I really want to get my hands on one.
U and me both. Have u tried the ported dlev rom? I flashed hellraiser beta 9 on top of it. Probably my favorite rom out right now fast responsive awesome battery life. Give it a shot if u haven't already.

Alright im looking into it im just not very good with android sdk.
You don't need the sdk... All you need is 7zip and adb setup for logcat if it doesn't boot. Use the version from the evo 4G, as it will already have the cdma sstuff you will need. This is a decent guide here.

I was Realy wondering about. My GNex runs 3.0 Kernel since a year and newer Linux Kernels have so much useful and performance optimizing things on it.

Okay so my phone's USB port doesn't work anymore and I'm hesistant on flashing a ics Tom right now in fear that I woblnt be able to flash any other rom or back to gb. What should I do? I can't decide whether to go with the codename Tom or aokp. Anyone wanna help me out?

I hate to say this, but flashing anything without a working USB port for recovery/download is sketchy at best.
Seeing all of Team Acid's source code gives me more confidence than someone that cobbles things together from unknown bits and pieces. I'm not familiar with "Tom" so I can't comment on that one.
Yep. Super risky to do it without the usb functioning. Just look at how many times you see "flash stock and start over". If you really know what you're doing you should be OK but if not your taking a risk.
Thank you guys. I wish it wouldn't be risky cause right now I'm using barebone and I need a faster rom, and a more updated one too. :/

Yeah that repair is very quick and I think the most inexpensive option available. I used them when my port messed up and while I thought about ordering the part and installing it myself, found it easier to just send it off and get it fixed. Good luck
