Yahoo eMail on Captivate - Successful - Captivate General

Yahoo email finally worked for me (both on mobile network & Wifi)
Please feel free to move this to appropriate thread/page, if this is NOT the place for it. I apologize. Just wanted to share if someone is looking for info on this.
Note: I am running Darky's 8.1 ROM, the Email app didn't work. It force closed on me several times. As a work around, I copied/replaced the Email.apk from other ROM (Axura 2.5 that I saved) into system\app folder using RootExplorer and got it to work with the below settings :
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Open Email
2. Select 'Add Account'
a. Enter your yahoo email Username: [email protected]
b. Enter password: password
3. Click on 'Manual Setup'
4. Select 'IMAP'
5. Incoming Server Settings
a. IMAP server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
b. Port: 993
c. Security: SSL (Accept all cetrificates)
d. Optional: blank
6. Click next
7. Outgoing Server Settings
a. SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
b. Port: 465
c. Security Type: SSL (Accept all cetrificates)
8. Click Next
9. Give a name to your account
DONE.
Note: If I left the default 'port numbers and Secutiry Type : none' in both incoming and outgoing server settings...it DID NOT work. It would give me and error saying 'Username and password are inavlid'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Luck.

I use K9, works both with yahoo and gmail.

Does Yahoo push work for either of you? I was able to set up Yahoo Mail using either default or K9 without trouble except it won't push.
The Yahoo Mail client pushes but lags terribly. MailDroid is the only one that will push but not sure if it's worth the money.
Running stock 2.1 on Captivate currently. Will be curious how these work when I flash something on it.

I just use the Yahoo Mail app. I love it.

Why not just use the yahoo mail application from the market. I use that and it pushes email to the phone.
I can have my phone sitting on my desk and on my computer have the yahoo mail box open. My phone beeps notifying me of an new yahoo mail message, I look at the yahoo email inbox on my computer and it still hasnt even shown up there yet. Thats how fast the push notifications are in yahoo email application. Of course you must be on a 2.2 or higher ROM for the google cloud based notifications (basically push notifications) to work.

Like I said, I've found that it lagged terribly. The push notifications were okay, but simple operations like opening emails, deleting, etc., took 5 - 15 seconds per operation. Do you think that's because I'm still running stock 2.1?

@MobileNick
Yes, K9 pushes for me on both yahoo and gmail. It will be under settings for each account you create. There is an option to push in increments of 30min, 1hr, 2hr and so on. Hope this helps.
I like to use just one app for the email since I have multiple accounts with yahoo and gmail.

Thanks. But that's not really "push" is it? That's polling. I was talking about when the email gets sent to the device right away like Gmail does.

Unlikely that it's 2.1. I just flashed to Andromeda recently and the app still lags just as bad as it did when I was on stock 2.1 as well. The app isn't so great imo.

Oh, my bad brotha. I was "thinking" it was push. But you are correct, I usually just use the polling option and set it to an hour, since that's all I need.
Sorry if I wasn't any help

I found the yahoo app was terrible on stock 2.1 but once I updated to 2.2 and applied a lagfix it worked much better. still a little lag but very useable.
those of you using the yahoo app, how do you find your battery life?

No - you're cool! I've been using K-9 with an hourly polling and honestly it's not that bad. Push would be cool but not necessary.
cyco722, mechanical tool: So seems like 2.2 with lagfix is the best way to have the Yahoo app work smoothly. I'll have to try it out once I get there!

Yes, you are correct. There is a little bit of lag in the yahoo mail app compared to the gmail app. It did get much better once I loaded an alternate ROM with a decent lag fix. Its manageable in my opinion.
I havent noticed any hit to the battery life using the yahoo mail app. It sits in the background the entire time using no resources, the push notifications come via googles cloud notification service (I believe this is only for android 2.2 and up, when I was on 2.1 I dont recall getting instant notifications).

Thanks. It works for me.

I found yahoo to be way too laggy, not be able to select multiple emails for deletion. had to actually open the email to then delete. And it wouldn't work over wifi. That all added up to a crappy app. I haven't tried it for a few months to see if they fixed any of these. I use k-9 set on hourly poll.

[APP] k9 mail client

Hi,
I just found this app to manage the email and looks better than the stock one.
My only problem is the conversation threads style of gmail, it doesn't appear on k9 so I have 20 different emails for one thread, does anyone know a way to group conversations in k9 like in gmail?
I know this app from G1. It's so old... I do not think, that k9 has anything more then stock gmail app. Also I do not think, that this app is still developed. I think, that your problem with mails thread comes from incompatibilities with 2.1 system (k9 comes from 1.1 times).
k9mail
Hi
K9mail is a powerfull app download latest version from dev website at google code or use atrackdog to go there
Latest version 2510
k9mail seems to sync my emails (and delete them) via IMAP better than the nexus stock app
Yeah, I think k9 blows away stock app, I've been using it for over a year now. But to answer the initial question, no way to thread conversations.
Is K9 still better than stock if your using gmail?
What about search funtionality, I doubt k9 can beat the stock mail clients ability to server side searches back as far as you have mail, I didnt think pop or imap support this? or am I wrong?
i use stock for gmail, and k9 for all other imap accounts.

If you are using Gmail, no... K9 is probably not better than stock.
In fact, I used to (on my G1) use K9 for several of my alternate accounts, one is a straight up @gmail.com account - another is a Google Apps for Domains account. But, now that I can sync multiple Google Accounts on my Nexus, I am only using K9 for my ISP's account. The functionality that the built in Gmail app provides is superb (in my opinion), as mentioned by the OP the threading of conversations makes it very easy to navigate a larger inbox.
Does K9 have "real" push, I want to use it but I don't want it to kill battery faster than stock GMail apps and it REALLY need to start threading!
So wonderfully helpful ...
k9 is slow.. profimail on symbian is way faster.. unfort.
i tried to email them suggestions but they ignored me..
one reason it is so slow is it is not keeping track of highest message id per mailbox.. so everytime you connect it is redownloading the last 25 messages or whatever amount you have it set to.
the second reason is that it is downloading entire messages.. it really only needs to download headers, and keep a connection to server open while you are in the app and then download the body when you goto a message.
if they would implement these 2 changes it would be light years faster.

Any ideas?
Yes, it supports the IMAP "IDLE" command, which gives you what you're calling "push" (rather than polling for email). The latest K9 also supports the "COMPRESS" extension, which transfers compressed versions of the content, which means less data usage, and less transmit/receive time.
and latest version 3.312 supports "Storage location"
- regular internal storage
- external storage (sd card)

[Q] Please give me a decent mail app

Okay, so far I've tried just about every mail app I know. I wonder if I've missed any...
In-built app:
- Basic functionality
Moxier:
- Doesn't send any emails! (useless error msg and no help from web)
- No decent widgets
- Clunky interface
RoadSync/Touchdown:
- Horrible interface
- Cannot select multiple recipients!
Surely there must be a client out there like the HTC Desire client that actually works well and gives proper functionality.
Or am I missing something??
Ferg.
code.google.com/p/k9mail/ has always worked for me with MSN, AOL and Yahoo.
Seven is the best one I have tried so far...
http://community.seven.com/main.php
Touchdown allows multiple recipients.
The interface is clunky though, especially in dual-pane mode. Still, I always end up going back to Touchdown for my corp email. It just works.
I am using K-9 mail and its running like charm.

Please define "proper functionality".
Ah, I guess by proper functionality I mean:
- Easy to access buttons for manipulating emails
- Can sync more than 1 month worth of email
- Can set periods for syncing (Push during the day, off at night)
- Doesn't show email text incredibly small (seemingly at random) and then not word-wrap properly
- Actually moves/deletes objects when you ask it to, not when it manages to contact the Exchange server again
etc.
There are a lot of shortcomings with the in-built app, I think.
I forgot to mention I'm using Activesync, not Gmail/Hotmail or POP3 etc.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone; I'll check them out.
Ferg.

Yeah, the interface is very clunky, and annoying that when you first start it it wastes most of the screen with the preview pane (which I don't think you can switch off permanently).
Multiple recipient - if I remember correctly, you can't multi-select from the address book. Am I mistaken?
If you can use IMAP with your Exchange server (and I doubt that'd be an issue at most companies), K-9 mail probably fits most of what you're looking for. I use it with Push for my Exchange account, and it's pretty much instant and doesn't waste battery polling for mail. You can enable larger buttons for multi-select and starring mail, and I find it to be pretty decent. Now I wish it would do the landscape view that the Samsung app does, but otherwise, I love it.
Is there any way to copy and paste in the standard email app?

TBH, it's unlikely IMAP will use less battery than ActiveSync. AS sends only a small amount of data every 15mins or so to keep the session open; IMAP's the one that needs to poll constantly. Unless it's IMAP Idle, which Exch doesn't do.
Not sure I can/would want to use IMAP on my hosted Exchange account but I guess it's an option. Just a bit married to AS, what with it being my job. ;-)

If you long-press in the body, it gives you a kind of select thing, but it's hit and miss. Sometimes seems to select a whole line, in which case you touch it again and it copies it; sometimes gives you the nice select tool that you can expand etc but no way I can see of copying the text!
i use k9 and i like it. except strangely on the tab when i reply to all, i also get the reply (which annoys me a bit). yet on my N1 k9 doesn't behave this way.
The IMAP is done through PUSH, not PULL, so it's not sending anything until the server tells it it has something for it (well, technically I think it's set to every 60 minutes send a small ping to keep things alive, but only if it hasn't gotten any messages for 60 minutes). AS is great when it's set up. I actually run my own Exchange server at home (actually 2000 still running on an old dual P3 box that keeps chugging away), and it's a lot easier in a small environment to configure/maintain IMAP over AS there. I love AS when IT has to maintain it for me though, and when I have a device. Maybe I'll have a big ARM tablet running Windows Next using AS

+1. I've always liked the K9 client.
Cool to see I am not the only one complaining...
I come from a TP2 and a great Exchange 2010 setup. The terrible email client of the Tab makes me regret my efficient TP with pocket outlook from WM6.5
Honestly pOutlook is an incredibly good email client. I never realized until I got my tab...
Then we need a serious calendar app and a serious contact app
Disappointing software on Android so far... (It's my first Android device)
Aye, I think all of the Android mail apps are comparatively poor except the Desire one.
But I don't regret swapping WM for Android in a million years. Battery life, rebooted to keepit going, buggy **** software...
Bugless - okay, so I guess it's IMAP idle you're using. I don't have that option, although standard IMAP would work it's not ideal.
Poo. Just have to put IP with the native client or Touchdown.

Zoinks, I can ENTER multiple recipients, but cannot SELECT multiple recipients from any address book.
Am I missing something, or is this the case? If that's the way it's meant, that makes it useless. :-(
Try "Seven". Only available as a beta at the moment I think, but you can get it from:

Seems like a good app. Will sync contacts & calendar to the local device too, also works as an IM app for GTalk and MSN.

May be, but it says it only works through OWA..! Seems a weird way to access Exchange in this day and age. Must have been to stingey to pay for the ActiveSync licence.

Nope, but I'd really like to use the seperate apps since I have a gmail for my personal use and I have my business email which I use for my freelance work, and I'd rather keep them strictly seperate.
I misread you before, sorry. You still need to set up any other email accounts you are using to enable pop or imap access, so if its not enabled already you will get the type of error you describe, or it will just time out.
Well, it works fine on my phone with the same settings. It's set up for POP3.
I actually like the asus email- i used to be a K9 fanboy until i tried the Asus stock yesterday- have 4 diff emails going to it with no probs. The email widget got stuck on 8 unread emails for a while so i just deleted it and than brought it back and it works great.
Still use k9 on my phone and Archos 101.
I had to set each acct to pop or imap like SD said above for the asus to work correctly...

That should be fixed by running the first firmware update.
Have to say, the stock email app almost good enough to tempt me away from K9.
Is there any way to get the app to download more emails though? I have about 300 emails in my IMAP account. Everytime you tap on "Load more messages", it downloads 25 messages. Have sat there downloading 25 at at time until all 300 are displayed. However, when I quit the app, then reload it later in the day, it automatically syncs and removes all my downloaded emails, until there are only 25 left in the Inbox again.
Bit annoying...
Alternatively, is there an app that combines the features of K9, with the split pane appearance of the stock app?

[Q] Email Client?

The installed email client (not gmail) looks decent but fails to support TLS as well as map folders such as Trash -> Deleted Items. I read the forums and noticed that Google neglected mapping issue since 2009!

1) Is there a widget that can display unread e-mail just like the default one? or last 3 e-mails display?
2) Can I replace the icon?
3) Is there a roadmap to include like a two-pane display like the default email client? Or another email client that is Honeycomb optimized?
4) Is there a way to disable the default e-mail client service since I will be longer be using it? Do I have to care about such services running in the background?
Thanks in advance!

Try Kaiten mail from the Market. It's based on K9, and made by the same person. Has the split pane thing. Little less polished than the stock offering, but the feature set more than makes up for it.
As for disabling stock, I guess just delete the accounts - shouldn't take up any resources that way. Or, go the whole way, and root your Transformer, then you can delete the Email.apk
+1 on Kaiten Mail. 4 updates in the past week - the developer is on top of it, and responds to emails. It's much more polished than it was 2 weeks ago.
Didn't know about Kaiten! Thanks! Hopefully it has the folder mapping. I guess I can find out by trying it for 15 minutes.
Do you know if there is a widget that would work with it?
+1 on Kaiten.
I don't think there is a widget for it. I wish there was...
There is no widget, and I've asked the dev about this - he has got some higher priority additions to make, and will hopefully have a widget done over the summer.
Well, despite rebooting working for me as mentioned above.. it appears as though a problem has crept in with the Asus email app.. basically if I have the transformer's WiFi sleep policy set to "WiFi off when screen off" then the Exchange push email config I have with my gmail stops working.. a reboot fixes it, but I know that this was working before...
The only thing I can think of trying is deleting my email setup and re-applying it - which I've done now.. will see if that cures anything but not holding my breath..
Anyone else using Exchange sync (to gmail) with the Asus email app.. and the same WiFi sleep settings?
I'm trying out Kaiten mail as well. Had some definite enhancements over K9 though some little glitches. For a dollar over the weekend in the Market it's worth playing with. Think i still prefer gmail app bc I got used to the convenience of the conversation style grouping which I find very handy for reviewing strings of messages. Hope to see Kaiten mail evolve as I'm sure it will.

Yeah, I usually check my mail on my phone every morning (stock ROM, stock Mail app). This morning it wasn't showing any new emails (despite the fact that I get emails from Newegg every day). I thought it might be an LTE thing, but it wasn't working on wifi, either. I cleared all my data, deleted the account on the Mail app. Tried again, and it was telling me how many messages were on the server, but it wouldn't download any of them.
Later, I force quit Mail and cleared it's data. Now instead of presenting a variety of account options, I have just Microsoft Exchange and Other listed. I picked other, put in my credentials, and it keeps coming back with an Authentication failed message.
It could be a problem on Yahoo's end

I'm having trouble synching on my TB and my wife's Incredible. Is this a fluke or is yahoo blocking IMAP on purpose?
So this will only apply for Yahoo mail. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
[1] Turn off SSL and use port 110
or
[2] Set incoming server to pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk port with SSL on 995
Yahoo has apparently a bad or expired certificate which is why people are seeing all types of errors like "Invalid Login" or when adding account "Unauthorized User please try your user name and password again" ect ect.
Again use at your own risk this was information from Yahoo support.

That solution is for POP email, not IMAP. Big difference.
With that being said, I have no solution for IMAP. Using POP you'll be able to get your mail, it just won't be "pushed" to your phone.
well it works with cm7

Seems like this is a universal problem amongst carriers and devices. I'm surprised there hasn't been any press about this.
