Hi,
I just found this app to manage the email and looks better than the stock one.
My only problem is the conversation threads style of gmail, it doesn't appear on k9 so I have 20 different emails for one thread, does anyone know a way to group conversations in k9 like in gmail?
I know this app from G1. It's so old... I do not think, that k9 has anything more then stock gmail app. Also I do not think, that this app is still developed. I think, that your problem with mails thread comes from incompatibilities with 2.1 system (k9 comes from 1.1 times).
k9mail
Hi
K9mail is a powerfull app download latest version from dev website at google code or use atrackdog to go there
Latest version 2510
k9mail seems to sync my emails (and delete them) via IMAP better than the nexus stock app
Yeah, I think k9 blows away stock app, I've been using it for over a year now. But to answer the initial question, no way to thread conversations.
Is K9 still better than stock if your using gmail?
What about search funtionality, I doubt k9 can beat the stock mail clients ability to server side searches back as far as you have mail, I didnt think pop or imap support this? or am I wrong?
i use stock for gmail, and k9 for all other imap accounts.

If you are using Gmail, no... K9 is probably not better than stock.
In fact, I used to (on my G1) use K9 for several of my alternate accounts, one is a straight up @gmail.com account - another is a Google Apps for Domains account. But, now that I can sync multiple Google Accounts on my Nexus, I am only using K9 for my ISP's account. The functionality that the built in Gmail app provides is superb (in my opinion), as mentioned by the OP the threading of conversations makes it very easy to navigate a larger inbox.
Does K9 have "real" push, I want to use it but I don't want it to kill battery faster than stock GMail apps and it REALLY need to start threading!
So wonderfully helpful ...
k9 is slow.. profimail on symbian is way faster.. unfort.
i tried to email them suggestions but they ignored me..
one reason it is so slow is it is not keeping track of highest message id per mailbox.. so everytime you connect it is redownloading the last 25 messages or whatever amount you have it set to.
the second reason is that it is downloading entire messages.. it really only needs to download headers, and keep a connection to server open while you are in the app and then download the body when you goto a message.
if they would implement these 2 changes it would be light years faster.

Any ideas?
Yes, it supports the IMAP "IDLE" command, which gives you what you're calling "push" (rather than polling for email). The latest K9 also supports the "COMPRESS" extension, which transfers compressed versions of the content, which means less data usage, and less transmit/receive time.
and latest version 3.312 supports "Storage location"
- regular internal storage
- external storage (sd card)

What is the best email app out there. I currently use the stock email app and have tried k9mail but I don't like the way either of these deal with folders. I would like to find an email client that can actually work with folders. Any suggestions?

I personally like the pure series thats available in the market it allows you to combine your sms, email and gmail all on one widget with options for skins and such. Also allows for manual and automatic refresh I like it alot been using it for several months. good dev support etc.

Gmail is the best by far
What I was looking for was an email program that had better nested folder access more like you have on the iPhone. I gave up my iPhone for the Hero but their email program had much better folder control.
I use Gmail. Once you understand how to use labels to mark your mail folders are no longer relevant.

Gmail won't do exchange though, will it? I have the stock mail app set to 'as items arrive', and I seem to remember the gmail app won't do that (admittedly I haven't played with that app in awhile).
Googles Labels are very similar to Folders, once you understand them. Take a look at this:
http://lifehacker.com/5513040/gmail-adds-nested-labels-sneak-peek-to-labs
Also, with Gmail on my Hero, if I have Gmail open on the browser on my laptop, I can actually see the emails come in faster on the phone, and then within 30 seconds on the laptop.
I would say, give it a try, set up an account and see what happens.

I have used Touchdown for Exchange and it does support Push email if your exchange server does. It isn't too bad, and there is a trial in the market.

Well my goal would be to be able to use one app for gmail and exchange. Right now I'm using k9 for gmail (I hate the gmail app and don't really like the stock mail app either) and stock for exchange.
I'm looking for a good email widget for CM7 RC2. I just synced my work exchange account with my phone and tried K9 but it was giving me an IO Error (no idea what that mean). I've tried looking for any type of widget, but not really finding anything good. You guys have any suggestions?
Have you tried K9 mail?

I have, but it gives me an IO Error on my work exchange account.
I'm looking for a client that's as good as the iPhone mail client. I'd like it to support multiple exchange accounts as well as render html based email properly. Also an email client that will render all emails proportionally so I don't have to scroll left and right on an email unless I zoom in. Also supporting pinch to zoom would be great. I've tried K9 but was left unsatisfied on it's implementation... what are the better clients on Android?
I'm in the same conundrum(though not for exchange accounts, mostly IMAP).
Tried k9, which fails quite bad and maildroid, which is just slow. Finalyl just settled on the Samsung Mail app that came with my Galaxy S. I'm sure you can find an APK for it around somewhere if you have a different phone.
It's as close to the iPhone mail prgram as I can find on Android

I don't understand how any could could be disappointed in K9 Mail, it works flawlessly for me. The GUI is simple yet intuitive and presents the right information at the right time, it ALWAYS works, it's fast, it uses VERY little battery, it supports a great deal of functionality.
The GUI between 2 and 3 got even better adding "Move to Archive" and such type buttons, making common actions easier to do.
One more big plus; Tasker supports it, so you can act on incoming emails, send email, etc via K9.
Only two things it's missing IMO..
Per-folder alerts (I combine all emails (forwarded) into one, and most of them go into specific folders) would be nice, but I've done this in Tasker now so no biggie here.
Second, if you move mail to a folder you don't sync, it stays local and doesn't clean up. IE: If you move Trash mail to the server Trash folder, it moves on the server and on the mail client. However it never gets purged in K9 after X days or after the server deletes it if you don't sync that folder. So what I've done is I sync a few such folders once a day.
FYI, I use Dovecot for my IMAP server, one mailbox IDLE, 4-5 sync once a day. I use Tasker to turn off Syncing at night and have K9 set to not sync when it's disabled so at night K9 doesn't receive mails, turns back on in the morning for me. And when I get certain emails in (based on subject, sender, etc) Tasker alerts me in special ways.
I don't really use the encryption/signing functionality, but it also works quite well paired with APG.
I just don't see why anyone wouldn't like it if they use IMAP. I assume POP would be a similar experience. Exchange can DIAF.
I swear by K9 Mail. Best email app I've ever used. Bonus for being open-source and updated frequently too.
If you are not satisfied with the market release version of K-9 you can always DL a newer version from the development web site.
You can view changes by clicking on the source tab and then the changes sub-tab.
I used K9 as my default email client on the Mytouch 3G. It is a really good, strong, and full of features application. I highly recommend it. Right now I'm using the default that came with the Mytouch 4G because it fits my needs.
Theres always Touchdown and this another one that I can't recall name of if you want to go paid route , K9 does everything and more for me so i've no complaints, The iphone mail app is PATHETIC! look for samsung mail (social mail app) if you want but so far the best is K9 and touchdown for exchange
The stock mail app on my Captivate can't access Yahoo!mail on WIFI and when I tried K9, it slowed my phone down to a crawl. Everything lagged so badly I had to uninstall after less than an hour. And yeah, lag disappeared right after I uninstalled K9.
SO yeah, I, too, am looking for a good mail app.

For me without doubt Maildroid

Okay, so far I've tried just about every mail app I know. I wonder if I've missed any...
In-built app:
- Basic functionality
Moxier:
- Doesn't send any emails! (useless error msg and no help from web)
- No decent widgets
- Clunky interface
RoadSync/Touchdown:
- Horrible interface
- Cannot select multiple recipients!
Surely there must be a client out there like the HTC Desire client that actually works well and gives proper functionality.
Or am I missing something??
Ferg.
code.google.com/p/k9mail/ has always worked for me with MSN, AOL and Yahoo.
Seven is the best one I have tried so far...
http://community.seven.com/main.php
Touchdown allows multiple recipients.
The interface is clunky though, especially in dual-pane mode. Still, I always end up going back to Touchdown for my corp email. It just works.
I am using K-9 mail and its running like charm.

Please define "proper functionality".
Ah, I guess by proper functionality I mean:
- Easy to access buttons for manipulating emails
- Can sync more than 1 month worth of email
- Can set periods for syncing (Push during the day, off at night)
- Doesn't show email text incredibly small (seemingly at random) and then not word-wrap properly
- Actually moves/deletes objects when you ask it to, not when it manages to contact the Exchange server again
etc.
There are a lot of shortcomings with the in-built app, I think.
I forgot to mention I'm using Activesync, not Gmail/Hotmail or POP3 etc.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone; I'll check them out.
Ferg.

Yeah, the interface is very clunky, and annoying that when you first start it it wastes most of the screen with the preview pane (which I don't think you can switch off permanently).
Multiple recipient - if I remember correctly, you can't multi-select from the address book. Am I mistaken?
If you can use IMAP with your Exchange server (and I doubt that'd be an issue at most companies), K-9 mail probably fits most of what you're looking for. I use it with Push for my Exchange account, and it's pretty much instant and doesn't waste battery polling for mail. You can enable larger buttons for multi-select and starring mail, and I find it to be pretty decent. Now I wish it would do the landscape view that the Samsung app does, but otherwise, I love it.
Is there any way to copy and paste in the standard email app?

TBH, it's unlikely IMAP will use less battery than ActiveSync. AS sends only a small amount of data every 15mins or so to keep the session open; IMAP's the one that needs to poll constantly. Unless it's IMAP Idle, which Exch doesn't do.
Not sure I can/would want to use IMAP on my hosted Exchange account but I guess it's an option. Just a bit married to AS, what with it being my job. ;-)

If you long-press in the body, it gives you a kind of select thing, but it's hit and miss. Sometimes seems to select a whole line, in which case you touch it again and it copies it; sometimes gives you the nice select tool that you can expand etc but no way I can see of copying the text!
i use k9 and i like it. except strangely on the tab when i reply to all, i also get the reply (which annoys me a bit). yet on my N1 k9 doesn't behave this way.
The IMAP is done through PUSH, not PULL, so it's not sending anything until the server tells it it has something for it (well, technically I think it's set to every 60 minutes send a small ping to keep things alive, but only if it hasn't gotten any messages for 60 minutes). AS is great when it's set up. I actually run my own Exchange server at home (actually 2000 still running on an old dual P3 box that keeps chugging away), and it's a lot easier in a small environment to configure/maintain IMAP over AS there. I love AS when IT has to maintain it for me though, and when I have a device. Maybe I'll have a big ARM tablet running Windows Next using AS

+1. I've always liked the K9 client.
Cool to see I am not the only one complaining...
I come from a TP2 and a great Exchange 2010 setup. The terrible email client of the Tab makes me regret my efficient TP with pocket outlook from WM6.5
Honestly pOutlook is an incredibly good email client. I never realized until I got my tab...
Then we need a serious calendar app and a serious contact app
Disappointing software on Android so far... (It's my first Android device)
Aye, I think all of the Android mail apps are comparatively poor except the Desire one.
But I don't regret swapping WM for Android in a million years. Battery life, rebooted to keepit going, buggy **** software...
Bugless - okay, so I guess it's IMAP idle you're using. I don't have that option, although standard IMAP would work it's not ideal.
Poo. Just have to put IP with the native client or Touchdown.

Zoinks, I can ENTER multiple recipients, but cannot SELECT multiple recipients from any address book.
Am I missing something, or is this the case? If that's the way it's meant, that makes it useless. :-(

May be, but it says it only works through OWA..! Seems a weird way to access Exchange in this day and age. Must have been to stingey to pay for the ActiveSync licence.
The installed email client (not gmail) looks decent but fails to support TLS as well as map folders such as Trash -> Deleted Items. I read the forums and noticed that Google neglected mapping issue since 2009!

I tried K-9 Mail for my IMAP email and found it to be quite decent but have a few issues:
1) Is there a widget that can display unread e-mail just like the default one? or last 3 e-mails display?
2) Can I replace the icon?
3) Is there a roadmap to include like a two-pane display like the default email client? Or another email client that is Honeycomb optimized?
4) Is there a way to disable the default e-mail client service since I will be longer be using it? Do I have to care about such services running in the background?
Thanks in advance!

Try Kaiten mail from the Market. It's based on K9, and made by the same person. Has the split pane thing. Little less polished than the stock offering, but the feature set more than makes up for it.
As for disabling stock, I guess just delete the accounts - shouldn't take up any resources that way. Or, go the whole way, and root your Transformer, then you can delete the Email.apk
+1 on Kaiten Mail. 4 updates in the past week - the developer is on top of it, and responds to emails. It's much more polished than it was 2 weeks ago.
Didn't know about Kaiten! Thanks! Hopefully it has the folder mapping. I guess I can find out by trying it for 15 minutes.
Do you know if there is a widget that would work with it?
+1 on Kaiten.
I don't think there is a widget for it. I wish there was...
There is no widget, and I've asked the dev about this - he has got some higher priority additions to make, and will hopefully have a widget done over the summer.
Well, despite rebooting working for me as mentioned above.. it appears as though a problem has crept in with the Asus email app.. basically if I have the transformer's WiFi sleep policy set to "WiFi off when screen off" then the Exchange push email config I have with my gmail stops working.. a reboot fixes it, but I know that this was working before...
The only thing I can think of trying is deleting my email setup and re-applying it - which I've done now.. will see if that cures anything but not holding my breath..
Anyone else using Exchange sync (to gmail) with the Asus email app.. and the same WiFi sleep settings?
I'm trying out Kaiten mail as well. Had some definite enhancements over K9 though some little glitches. For a dollar over the weekend in the Market it's worth playing with. Think i still prefer gmail app bc I got used to the convenience of the conversation style grouping which I find very handy for reviewing strings of messages. Hope to see Kaiten mail evolve as I'm sure it will.

I recently purchased the Moto G 4G LTE and have been having a blast with it. It was simple to unlock the bootloader, add TWRP, and root the device. It was also simple to unbloat the device since it did not have much bloatware on to begin with. Over all I am really pleased with my purchase.
I did change out the SMS app because the original was very bland. However, the email app was driving me crazy. So I spent a better part of the day looking at the available free email apps to see which one I would prefer over the stock app. I was totally disappointed when I found that all the apps I tried did not work well with GMail. Each app would fetch the test mail from GMail and then delete the mail preventing me for using Outlook to download the mail to my PC. No matter what I tried, the app would either delete or "mark as read" and my Outlook could not retrieve it.
It seems the only email app that worked in keeping the GMail intact was the stock email app on the phone. But I don't like it because it does not tell me if it is sync'ing with the server and downloading or not. So I have no way of knowing except if an email is download it will give me a notification. It won't even give me the last sync timestamp.
Anyone using an email app that works with GMail (retrieve but leave unaltered), AND, you can also download the email with Outlook?
What's wrong with using the actual Gmail app and syncing on your Outlook?
There's going to be a combination of Gmail POP3 settings and mail client settings that will determine if a message is deleted from the server or not upon retrieval.
I use the free version of Maildroid, it works great with what I use, being Outlook, MSN, and Gmail. Puts everything into one place.
I don't understand why, but the OEM email does not affect the mail on GMail. When I access the mail and download it to my phone, I can then access the same email from Outlook on my PC and download the same mail. But using other applications like K-10 and Aquamail, when I download the mail to my phone I cannot access with Outlook on my PC. So the other mail programs must be doing something that the OEM email app is not doing. Strange. I have also tried some different settings in GMail to no avail.
I cannot comment about the apps that you have mentioned, but providing the app that you choose uses IMAP then the various email clients should maintain synchronization with each other. @Darkshado mentioned POP3. I used to have problems with Hotmail using POP3, but since they implemented IMAP the problems have disappeared. I can confirm that Maildroid works correctly, you can choose in settings whether or not to delete messages off the server.
Thanks for the tip on Maildroid. That works for me. Much appreciated.
Glad to help. I just wish that is was cheaper, but I hardly notice the ad's at the bottom anymore
I am surprised the other apps that you tried have problems, I was thinking that you had made a mistake in the configuration or something. We learn..... Cheers.

I have added AdBlock and the ads are gone. The other mail programs had all the same options but did not do what I wanted. Very frustrating because I liked their aesthetics. But like you said, live and learn...
I use K9. It's open source and has pretty advanced settings to manage synchronization and server actions. It takes some to to configure, but that can be an advantage...
K-9 was another one I tested that did not work for me. Appreciate the response though. Some of these mail programs look really nice. K-9 was one of them, I just wish it would not molest the mail so I can download it later into my Outlook mail for archiving.

I have used Adblock Plus for the longest on my Firefox browser PC and Tablet. So I went with what I know best, AdbLock Plus ver 1.2.1. On my free apps I see absolutely no ads. Wonderful.
Thanks for the pointer. Apparently it's banned from the Play Store, no wonder that I didn't find it. I did try another one called Adblock which is on Play Store and it seemed to do nothing at all. Anyway, I have been using the one that you suggested for about a week now, and you are correct, no ads anywhere. No wonder Google doesn't allow it! Thank's..
