I received a HD7 today and was wondering if the light theme uses more battery than the dark theme?
If it is an LCD display I would say "No". On the other had, with AMOLED, yes. Just can't tell how much more.
Agreed. With SAMOLED black pixels are "non lit" idk if they dont light up AT ALL some say this is true others argue it. either way it will def make a difference on SAMOLED but HD7 doesnt have one so it shouldnt make a difference. I have a Focus (with a AMOLED) and i use the white theme, and I cant complain about battery life.
doesn't seem to make a difference on battery power on my HD2, although it's an eye-sore so I stick with dark.
I have seen someone change this background to grey or some other colors.
Wonder how they do that?

Not with the HD7.
SAMOLED panels use up to 3 times more power when producing whites.

With my experience, they DO light up, but ever so slightly and only noticeable in pitch black (or close to it) situations. Find a black picture from the web and open it up in your SAMOLED equiped device and after your eyes have settled, you'll see it. It's very hard to notice it when theres brighter colours on the screen because your eyes tend to focus on the light parts rather than the blacks.
White. Theme uses less power on mango RTM 7720
no Way.
HD7 use the TFT-LCD, or normal LCD.
Normal LCD cannot produce the White by itself, it has to run the backlight , like "light the pixel up" to produce the wite, and claimed to use more battery. From my experience so far, the Black Theme give more battery time than white.

On TFT-LCD, I believe the backlight is always on if the screen is displaying any information. When dark theme is enabled, it is just blocking some of that light.
On an AMOLED it is able to disable the light in a region of black. That is why you get the deeper black.
So yes, on AMOLED you will save power using a darker theme, and further more power savings if you use red or some other dark accent color.
If using the dark them does take more energy (to feed enable the light blocking pixels), I can only imagine it is negligible at best.
Yep, on tft-lcd panels the backlight is always on. That is the reason for that quite grey-ish black. So it does not matter in which color the background is. It does not affect the battery life. On Amoleds a white screen uses more power. To compensate that, the processing unit of the display decreases brightness. This is also to ensure a longer lifetime of those little amoleds.
Just a heads up, if the light theme does drain more power the phone will display a message something along the lines of "Your phone's display is optimised for dark colours and the light theme may hurt the battery" when you select it.
To simply clarify this (as an ex-LCD-reviewer). TFT (all of them are TFT) LCD use constant backlight to visualize information. Backlight is often CCFL or LEDs (and actually, THIS IS CAUSING disinformation between people, they all want OLEDs at home when they buy a new Samsung LED TV, no, it´s not OLED, it LCD with LEDs as a source of backlight).
So, the screen is made out of thin film transistor grid (which we refer to as a logic pixel grid, this means that the HD7 has 480px wide, and 800px height, logic because it controls if the pixel is "lit" or "dark"), every single pixel out of this grid is consisting of three subpixels (Red, Green and Blue). So, if I have a constant backlight on, what do I have to do to stop the light coming through? Block it. But BEWARE! Because there are 3 (now more) technologies how you can do that - TN (Twisted Nematic - HD7 Screen), VA (Vertical Alignment), and IPS (In-Plane Switching).
VA/IPS panels need to apply current to the electrodes of the TFT to allow the light to pass through it! TN does not work this way! TN must apply current to shift the crystal to actually block light! Take a look at my "review" in Slovak Language (use a Google Translator or just look at the pictures or whatever) for visual representation of the technologies.
So, what does this mean? While the SAMOLED screen is not draining the battery at a black theme, the LCD (HD7) is.
Thanks for the clarification. I did notice that my HD7 battery lasts shorter on black theme than white. Its like its almost draining every minute when in use.

The twisted nematic effect is based on the precisely controlled realignment of liquid crystal molecules between different ordered molecular configurations under the action of an applied electric field. This is achieved with little power consumption and at low operating voltages.

The illustrations to the right show both the OFF and the ON-state of a single picture element (pixel) of a twisted nematic light modulator liquid crystal display operating in the "normally white" mode, i.e., a mode in which light is transmitted when no electrical field is applied to the liquid crystal.
AMOLED screens do not use any back lighting. The electroluminescent organic compounds emit light when they're exposed to an electric current.
Think my HD 7 lasts longer on white theme.
I have an LG Optimus Black with Launcher7 (makes your android looks like wp7) and I really like the light theme.
It has an IPS (In-Plane Switching) screen... What uses more battery? Dark or Light theme? Does it depend solely on brightness or the colours??

This would look fantastic on any desktop. wish I was a coder too.
it would be simple to take that image and make it into a clock but I dont think theres any way of making the calendar actually work....
it would be purely aesthetic....
theres also the issue of the person who created it...
I wouldn't really be comfortable using it without permission....
I dont think you would be able to get the digital clock inside the circle either.....
As I am a fan of conventional watch gears, I was wondering how to replicate this effect on the Sense Clock. Thus I had the idea of concentric rings. As with all ideas, I googled to see what was out and lo and behold I found something similar.
Due to limited space on our devices the clock should only consist of 3 rings
Inner Ring - Hours 24 segments. (12 in white, 12 in black for AM/PM)
Middle Ring - Minutes 60 segments
Outer Ring - Seconds 60 segments
The time would be shown @ the 3'Oclock position so we could read the time conventionally.
For increased visual appeal, the 3 rings could be programmed to move in opposite directions. E.G Hours move CCW (counter clockwise), minutes move CW and seconds move CCW.

Inner Ring (BLUE) - Hours 24 segments. (12 in white, 12 in black for AM/PM).
Middle Ring (GREEN) - Minutes 60 segments
Outer Ring (RED)- Seconds 60 segments
Time Display Box (Black)- Displays Time. Most likely in Larger Font than on the wheel to make it easier to read.

Unfortunately I dont think I can help you with this project.....
Until I came upon this thread I had no idea it would be possible to make the clock function in the way that you describe......
Something like this is far beyond me Im afraid.......
Perhaps rat_2665 might be able to help or point you in the direction of somebody who can........
If you do get a working version I'll be happy to beta test though
I could always put together some alternative skins for it as well.......
I hope you do manage to get this off the ground and If I come across anybody that I think might be able to help you I'll send them this way......
Best of luck........

Make it more like the original clock, the display in the centre and the present values marked by a line (at 12 or 3 position). For the scripts and the mode9 file the files by mncessna can be used. But I would advice against too colorful picture. Make instead a black/white version for day and a lumen version for night. You have to do three pictures (6 for day/night) for the "hands", which are really 256x256 pixel pictures with transparent background and the 24/60/60 in the start position (red line in the original clock). The centre with time and date can be transparent. For the scripts and the mode9 file I can help.
somebody give me an update on this?
i'd like to create this clock. is that ok?
i've attached a picture of a clock i made of concentric rings. it's an appealing picture to watch....for some reason, i enjoy watching the wheels turn...by the way, the cover for this clock has a rectangular opening on the right side. it has rounded corners. this is where the current time is displayed. i intended to make the cover only 10% transparent, just enough to let the wheels moving behind it show up a little....sort of add to the mystique of it. but i made it 100% transparent for now so i could debug it. i think i like it this way
i've also posted a clock of concentric circles i made. it's a neat one too. it has a weekday function, a moving second hand ball, ampm indicator, and 2 green balls surrounding the current hour. the current minute is indicated by a small blue ball.
SlimBrown asked me to help him with this clock. i told him i'd like to do that.
so, is it ok to proceed? i've sort of been working on it already but thought i'd better ask before doing to much more.

yeah, that's a "feature" of the lua script that drives all the motion and text displays.
every second, the seconds wheel is rotated and the minutes wheel is rotated.
there is a "calendar" function that gets called routinely, but not every second, that updates the time text.
i wanted the snapshot to be with the second hand at the top centered position. i should've waited until the calendar function had updated the time text.

After over a year why does microsoft refuse to give us an authorized app that can change tile colors from the basic 10? Seriously is there a good answer? The best I can come up with is because that app would have to have registry access to be able to give us custom colors. However why make it an app? Why not just build it into the OS like a hot fix in settings or something..
their reason is probably design related. They chose colors that are clearly readable in both themes, light and dark. If they allowed custom colors, people would be able to, for example, create white tiles. Match that with the light theme, white text and white pictograms and the phone would be unusable. This goes for a lot of colors where text or pictograms simply become undistiguinshable or unreadable. It's simply a way to prevent this from happening and I don't see what the big fuzz is. Surely amongst these 10 colors should be at least one color you like, I myself switch around with 4 of the accents.

Personally only the Nokia Blue color is just not god awful to look at. I have tried every combination both light and dark and the Nokia Blue is the only one that when you take the phone out to show it off just doesn't scream ugly. Some of us like other colors of the spectrum besides the primaries. Particularly the darker spectrum. On my HTC I set it to a very nice shade of dark grey and it looked so buttery smooth and sleek. As to the design concept I can see that but a simple fix would be a basic if/else If theme = light (insert spectrum here not allowed) like white on white. I can see that idea as one reason but it's such a simple fix I can't see why they couldn't think of more colors.
Personally it's the only feature I miss from my HTC Surround was Advanced Config. Change tile color to match my mood that day and set a custom SMS tone. (Still not sure why this functionality has not been implemented yet after almost 2 years...)
Agreed, the color choices are pretty lame. And there should be an official tool to add colors. I understand someone may choose a color that can't be seen properly, but then hell, just change it back At some point, the hand holding has to be pulled back just a little and allow people to learn something on their own. And some of the colors are completely unusable for a guy that is not into Magenta, Purple, etc. But Brown! Who the hell ever uses that? I haven't seen not one SS or post from someone saying that was a color they used on their phone. It should've at least been replaced by a Grey seeing as how that's a more modern color! I've never seen Brown used in a Modern setting.

regarding your first point: I think you're misinterpreting my statement wrong or that article . The article highlights that app developers should respect the accent of the user and not hardcode the accent itself into the app (meaning: it should use the color value provided in the system, not simply take the color value #FF1BA1E2 and slap it in there). My point was, that often developers use a second color in their apps, that go along nicely with the chosen accent. Some are hardcoded to look nice, others simply take the complementary color (weave comes to mind) which can result in weird/ugly color combinations.
as to your second post: I agree with the second part of that point: MS should add more accents in their system. I myself do not favour a color wheel approach of allowing users to use *any color they want*. If they'd provide 25-30 accents, surely no one could claim that their heterosexual lifestyle could be threatened by the colors of their phone :-D.

Perhaps custom colors are not allowed because they're edited at the registry level and that's currently a WP7 no-no. My device is dev unlocked and I still don't have access to create accent colors either directly or via apps. I hope that this is addressed in WP8.

number one: I see what you did there, nice one . But magenta on cyan? doesn't that look horrible? :-D
I don't think registry level is what's standing in our way. After all, adding or assigning a custom ringtone also requires access to the registry, as does changing the current theme. And surely MS would be able to allow such an app or setting not to be abused freely for our pleasure, they'd only need to allow access to the appropriate keys. I really think the main concern is design related: preventing people from using horrible color schemes that could deter first time users (for example, magenta on cyan ) and/or design issues with apps.

Definitely very intense on the black Lumia. The cyan body changes the way the display looks in its intensity. That's why can get away with it. Were I to own the black, I'd go for blue theme. I agree... More options!!!!

Not sure there's really much point to this question anymore until we know the details of WP8. If custom/customizable themes are not present there... then hell hath no fury like that of a Windows Phone user stuck with pink.

For additional idea I could suggest to make an option to make it glow only on left and right sides, where the edges are rounded on phone.

Coming this week is my release of NEONZ beta only for the Samsung Galaxy S7edge. The app is simple. It produces a frame around the edge of the screen available in many colors in portrait and landscape. The framing will be produced in any screen or app you have open.
I am currently looking for someone to make the icon for this app as I am not good at this sort of thing. I am also looking for initial feedback and additional ideas.
Thanks guys!

Will you be adding a option where you are able to pick some colours and have it switch through them or maybe even a fade option.
If you can't it doesn't matter I'm still looking forward to having this app.

It will have dual color and fading. The top and bottom bars may also be disabled so just the sides light.

That's good thanks for the reply. Can't wait for the app.

Here is a taste of what is to come.
ISSUES
- UI will be reworked. It's horrible.
- Top and bottom disable button may not stick.
LET ME KNOW ABOUT
- Does it fit your screen properly??
[emoji2]
Looks like the system keeps killing the app. I will be working on that along with the UI and more colors.
As you told system keeps killing the app... or by cleaning ram it get killed.
Set on boot it's working, just need few seconds to turn it on, but not a big deal.
I've noticed that after reboot the app "forget" the "Disable top and bottom" option. I believe the app doesn't read this option after startup, because even after it get killed and you launch it the option is disabled.
About UI maybe it would be better to have color palette to pick colors?
And an option to choose first or the second color trasparent?
And yes it fits perfectly the screen!
Thanks for your hard work, I'm looking forward for new releases! It looks awesome!
I've found another problem... if you want to grant permission (I've tried it only on storage) to any app it say that you can't do it untill you turn off the overlayed application... as I understand this one will be hard to beat...
I had to turn off overlaying permission to your application, but ofc after it stopped working...
very good app thanks

Fantastic work, installed and happy like a little child
It would be awesome if app could adapt the neon color to the apps header, just like keyboards can do.
Another good feature would be that the color which is in the middle of the edge could fade into transparent because it doesn`t look good when you open an app with white background. You see a gray/black semi transparent gradient.
When the Neons are ON I cannot click install when trying to install an app. Only Cancel button can be pressed.
i tried it its very cool but i got few questions:
can it cause burn in ?
can you stop it in full screen apps like watching a movie ?

Yes it could cause some burn in but it's such a small part of the screen that it doesn't concern me. I think it would take a considerable amount of time though.
The app won't have per app settings to disable only for certain apps you choose. Neonz is built on tasker and doesn't allow for that feature. At least not that I know of. It won't allow for choosing your own colors either, at least not that I am aware of.
I am still working on this app though in case anyone is looking for an ETA. I am setting up color screens to choose available colors and adding a feature to plug in your own color if you know the hex for that color. I'm sorry for taking so long on updates but things in life get in the way sometimes. An update will be available soon though that is far better than the first beta release. I will then update the OP including proper credit for the wonderful icon. I haven't forgotten about you.

No need to be sorry. Take your time. It is a bit buggy and it needs to be fixed first.

Has any progress been made on this app or is it a dead project? Was really looking forward to an updated version of this app.
UPDATE: New version EB_CD_1.4_BETA is now up on Google Play Store. Download now! Please leave a rating on Google Play Store if you try the App, your feedback is very valuable!
NOTE: The App is tested on Samsung Galaxy S9 so far, for the looks. If you have a Galaxy S8/S8+/S9+, please post some pictures as a feedback. Thanks!
Greetings! I made this special Curved Edition of Energy Bar for Galaxy S8/S9/+. Look forward to hear community feedback on this.

Many of you who have a Windows Mobile past like me, might have instantly recognized the thin colorful line(s) in the above image. And for the new Android generation, introducing Energy Bar - a pulsating Battery indicator!
Energy Bar puts a thin line on top of your Status Bar whose length corresponds to your device's current Battery level.
Got a full charge? The line will cover the whole width of your screen.
Battery depleting? So will the length of Energy Bar.
After several iterations (thank you for the feedback, early testers), the App is now feature packed:
Energy Bar can be configured from a width of 1 pixel to cover the entire status bar
Energy Bar puts almost 0% load on CPU, as it wakes up only to reflect any change in battery level
Energy Bar's origin can be configured as left/center/right
Energy Bar can hide on fullscreen content (apps, videos, images, games etc)
Energy Bar can be configured to change colors automatically depending on the live battery level
Energy Bar could have a mono color/multiple color segments/gradient
You can literally assign any color in the world for your favorite configuration
Energy Bar as a cool pulsating animation whenever a power source is plugged into your device
There is something about visual over numbers that keeps you and your device's battery level in sync with just a glance. You may find it intuitive/effective/stylish way to read the battery level, let me know what you think

You're welcome! If possible could you post a photo of your phone with Energy Bar active? I am yet to see Energy Bar live on a Galaxy S9+
This is now at 88%
It works so far.
Thanks for this!! I used to love having this app on my s7e, but somehow forgot about it so I had to buy the full version..
Here's some s9+action with it in play
Sry for the double post, but thought I'd add another picture but in landscape and also a link for anyone that wants to see the bounce animation option, thought it is pretty cool..
It would be nice to have this implemented on AOD.

Definitely an issue if it is an overlay like the app operates but if it was implemented such as the AOD, then it shouldn't be an issue since it's constantly moving around.. But having an overlay over the lockscreen, which I don't think you'd be able to do cause security, would definitely cause burn in with the same pixels being on at literally all times..
What's the impact this app has on the battery life?
Minimal impact

I agree, there are 2 issues:
#1 Displaying Energy Bar while using the phone is one thing, but displaying 24/7 (through AOD) definitely doesn't sound like a good idea, due to potential burn in.
#2 The latest versions of Android doesn't allow any overlay App to be displayed over the system elements like Lockscreen, Status Bar, Nav Bar. Further, Samsung's AOD doesn't seem to allow 3rd party to display, if I were to show Energy Bar on AOD, I would have to make my own AOD implementation.

It should have close to 0% impact. Please check the battery report of System after using for several hours. If it's not close to 0% then I would consider it as an issue, please report.
UPDATE: What's new?
EB_CD_1.2_BETA:
* Adjusted the curve at left corner by 1 pixel, because every pixel matters!
* Fixed issues with 'Status Bar' mode - portrait to landscape switching/auto-hides.
EB_CD_1.2.1_BETA:
* Minor Bug fixes
Hey Guys! If you try the App, please leave a review on Google Play Store, it will be really helpful, thanks!

Looks pretty, especially because of the color combination you chose.
@jagan2 Thanks for the new version. its awesome.
I do have a problem with the overlay in this app though. in some other apps, the screen doesnt register anymore when i press it. when i disable engergy bar it registers my input again. an example is gsam battery bar asking for root. im unable to press exept unless i disable the energy bar.
There were other cases with other apps in the past as well, but i forgot which exactly. I have tried another app like yours powerbar which didnt have this problem, so im hoping you might be able to resolve this problem, as i do prefer energy bar.

You're welcome!
So as far as the overlay issue is concerned, during request of permissions all Overlays should be automatically disabled (doesn't happen on S9+ ?.) Could you give me an example of another instance where the input was not accepted ?
Also, please try the standard version of Energy Bar and report me if the same issues exists? If it doesn't, with that version, pretty sure I can release an instant update.

yes i have been having the same problem with the standard version. on a S7 edge mind you. so its not exclusivly to s9+
about other apps, i think it might be lastpass but im not sure. if i run into it again ill let you know.
i hope maybe others run into this problem as well, so you might get a idea.
So far so good, pretty sweet! The only issue I had was I downloaded the wrong version and have donated twice through both apps
Hi all.
I am very glad to see asus has kept a notification LED, as some other phones have dropped this option.
Question, is it multicoloured?, i have only seen it light up RED when charging in videos.

Nice, I see a green and a red there!
Oh my, I'm so tempted by this phone. The only thing I'm wondering about is whether I'd miss not having an AMOLED screen.... The rest of the specs are of high appeal!
not having an amoled screen is not a problem for me , as you can read in my signature
Great thats another tick
Can someone who owns this phone confirm what colours the LED supports and whether its possible to assign different colours to different apps? On my Samsung S5 I have blue set for email, green for Facebook messenger and white for WhatsApp among others. I want to know if its possible to replicate this configuration on the Zenfone 6. Thanks.
If it is an RGB LED use Light manager, im using on my S8+ and its excellent.

I used Light Flow on all my phones with notification LED. You can not only assign different colors to different apps, but also different colors/pulse patterns to different notifications of the same app, based on the notification text/subject. It's great.
I'm aware of the versatility of Light Flow / Light Manager however I want to know what colours the physical LED can support. Guess I'll have to wait until more forum members buy the phone as there don't seem to be many at the moment.
I had significant problems with lightflow, it used to be ok, then started crashing and playing up constantly, hence i switched to light manager, i suggest try both.
+1 for the main OP

Red, green and yellow.
no blue , didnt get it to work when I tried very quickly .
in Zenui there is no built-in support to adjust the LED color but maybe using Light flow or whatever apps it can be done.. although for me I am not interested at all in this so havent really tinkered with it.

There's no Always On Display, though, so a customisable LED becomes more useful. (I don't think there's any AOD, anyway?)

Shame there is no blue. Makes me wonder what the cost difference would be between an RG and RGB LED. Still nice to have one and hope at least 3rd party app customisation will work. Odd they are one of the few who bothered to include it yet they didn't put any effort into making it more effective.

Yeah who knows but I think the real reason is they just kept the led they used before and found a way to include it in Zenfone 6, rather than swap it out.

Ah didn't know they had used the 2-colour previously. Makes sense if they've already got a previous deal planned out and spare stock etc.

There is another aspect: Bicolor LED could have the better visibility than tricolor one.
