[Q] Couple of Quick Questions - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a Nexus S today (second one) and noticed a couple of things on it that were different than the first one I tried. The wallpaper on this one at start up, after setting it up was a static wallpaper that isn't selectable from the wallpaper page (it's not one of the preloaded ones under wallpaper). Kinda odd. It looks like the light blue wallpaper that the HTC EVO Shift 4G comes with. The last one I tried had the Nexus live wallpaper loaded up. Second I noticed it had Angry Birds already installed. I can't remember if the other had it or not, but I thought I'd see if any of you had it from the factory. I'm not too worried it's used or anything (all protective covering was in place...except the small strip on the lower hump, but none of them had that...I inspected a few...a couple had scratches) and all the wires and battery were sealed. Just curious if anyone else has seen this. Phone was built 12/19/10 according to Samsung registration. Thx

return it for a new one. sounds like you were sold a refurbished / used one

Return it, Angry Birds is not pre-installed.

Interestingly enough I did a factory reset/full wipe on it just to see what would happen and sure enough Angry Birds was gone...up until I checked the Market and it was automatically downloading with a few other Google apps/updates. It said something like it was reloading missing apps or something. Could this be because of my Market log in or something? Seems odd, but it looks like ANgry Birds might have downloaded itself after I first started it and I didn't notice until it was done since it downloaded on its own after the reset. Everything else is working well so far...no marks/scratches or any blems on the phone. First couple they pulled out had a scratch and some box rash so I keep looking till I found a blem free one.

you sure you didnt have angrybirds on a previous android device

I don't think the angry birds should've been on there but there we're a couple NS's I've seen with the old static live wallpaper after a 1st boot setup. When I checked to see if it was selectable, it was nowhere to be found.

YUp, that describes the wallpaper exactly...and yes I did have Angry Birds on a couple of other Android devices. One of which is still activated. So I guess thats why it downloaded then. App transfer?

On 2.2 devices and up, as soon as you login on startup of a freshly wiped phone, it will apply your LAST background you had on your previous phone and start downloading all the apps you had downloaded from the Market.
Some apps can quickly install and show up before all the others, and usually static wallpapers come across better (applies) than live wallpapers.

That would explain it. I had tried out an EVO Shift 4G for a couple of days and thats the wallpaper that showed up. I had other apps, but Angry Birds was the only one that had showed up so far. But that explains that exactly...thanks, good to know.
So far the only minor issue (if you can call it that) is the volume button has a little up and down play in it. One of 'em didn't, but there was box rash on the plastic. This one is blemish free.

Also, I did notice the posts about touch sensitivity issues when plugged in. I've seen that on this one when trying to scroll through apps on occasion. Is that pretty common on all the Nexus S' at this point?

I noticed it charging on the included Samsung one. Apps screen wouldn't scroll the first couple of swipes. Changing hand position or upplugging it cured it.

This happens to me when im charging my phone from the living room. Try another outlet source

Got my G2X replacement...

Got it in the mail today - T-Mo CS has been great so far - overnighted me a new one.
I just finished setting it up which took only 1 hour (thank you fast WiFi and Google restore).
Some things I've noticed so far.
- This one has a HUGE backlight bleed in the bottom right corner. It's really gross. The other corners and edges are fine although there is some I don't care. My original G2X seems had no blacklight bleed at all compared to this. Huge bummer with this..since if I want to keep the replacement I have to sacrifice screen quality.
- The power button is stiffer and nicer to click than my original G2X which was a bit squishy...silly but noticed it right away
- I used the Google restore so it reinstalled the same 72 apps I had installed on my original G2X at boot up. During this time the replacement G2X didn't heat up at all while I remembered my original G2X heated up considerably during the install. Not sure why this is.
- The screen feels more responsive than the original G2X. Feel this using keyboard, sliding lock screen and general use.
- Battery life (probably an anomaly) seems better on this phone doing similar tasks. Will need to test for longer period to be sure.
I'm going to now use the replacement as my phone for the next 72 hours (need to use on workdays too) and I'll report back on whether I still have any reboots or freezes that I had on my original G2X.
I'm half hoping I do and don't. If I don't, there's a chance it's a hardware issue and I have to decide to keep the new one with a worse screen. If I do, then it's software and will be fixed on my old one so I can go back to it.
We shall see...

Could you explain that process in detail? When I switched from my Nexus One to the G2x, Market listed my paid apps as "purchased," but it didn't install any apps at all, neither free nor purchased. I'd like to try the factory-reset approach people have mentioned as improving their battery performance, but I really don't want to have to search for and manually install the 70-80 apps I have on my phone currently.

Sure! Make sure in Settings-> Location & Privacy -> Backup my data/restore my data are both checked and it's tied to your primary GMaila ccount. I don't know how frequently it backs up and there's manual way to do a backup.
However, what will happen is when you factory reset and login with this GMail account it will not only restore contacts, calendar, email, etc. but all the apps you had installed (purchased and free) at the last backup. It will do this all in the background so you can use your phone for other stuff. The only indication is the SYNC icon in the notification bar. Once done it will show a notification that says "XX applications successfully restored" and you're done.
You can then go into Market and put on other ones that may have been missed, etc.
It will also restore your WiFi AP passwords and settings including other settings, It's pretty cool

this is the exact reason i'm undecided about sending mine back. mine is slight in the top right corner. i can only see it if i hide the status bar with adw. i'm just worried that i'm going to get one that's worse. or get someones refurbished bleeding to death device. have no idea what i'm going to do. just over a week to get my cash back. or live with it. or play the mail game with tmo, sending devices back and forth till i get one to my liking. i just unrooted and restored stock recovery incase i send it back. knowing me, cyan will release tonight and i'll install it and keep it. lol. my head is spinning from trying to decide. 500 bucks for an inferior screen? my g1 had no bleeding. after just saying that, i think i'm gonna play the mail game with tmo. it's friggin 2011. i demand better for my hard earned money. plus, if we all just accept it, it gives the manufacturers no reason to improve upon things. if enough people say no, they'll get the hint.
What you describe is what I expected to happen, but it didn't. It occurs to me that this probably didn't happen for me in the switch from the Nexus One to the G2x because the N1 was running Gingerbread and the G2x is still on Froyo.
Anyhow, I'm glad to know that it does work at least in some circumstances, and I've had those settings since I first configured the device, so maybe I'll be brave and try the factory reset. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I'm torn too. If this phone doesn't reboot or have any issues at all then I'll probably keep it even though the blacklight bleeds in one corner. This appears to be the current quality of most panels as nearly every ipad2 it seems has horrible blacklight bleed (including my wife's). I can live with a lower quality screen in exchange for a better overall and more stable device.
I bought my first g2x in store on the 20th and had over 20 freezes/reboots in the first 24 hours. Replaced it and now running over 24 hours with no reboots and three full charge cycles without a single hitch. I highly suggest getting a replacement if you have the reboot issue.

Well that's the end of that. My replacement rebooted in the middle of the night while charging which my current phone has never done. So I'm back to my original G2X and I'm keeping it. Its obvious this is some type of software issue and not hardware. My original is perfect hardware wise with no bleeding at all.
I guess now I just wait until either LG patches the phone or CM7

Fixed the yellow screen tint and viewing angle on my g2x

i figured this out today so check it out and let me know.
after heading home from the tmobile store with my 4th g2x after 3 returns for various issues (i have to be the unluckiest guy ever). the last time, my G2x (tmobile) was fine when i turned it on to sync but after turning it off and to let it charge after draining initial battery i pulled out my G Tablet.
the g tablet has nvidia tegra 2 as well and is almost exactly the same as the g2x in many specs. the LG G-slate was said to work with the g2x great which is why i assume they released them at the same time.
i hadnt used my gtab much since i got my phone so i reset it with vegan-gingerbread rc1. well in the new Vegan gingerbread settings i had (before reset i had same rom. just wanted clean install) changed a few things to tweak it. one in particular is said to help tablets look better or at least the G tablet. the setting is also in CM7 series i believe. its the one the flips your screen 180 Degrees then you use auto-sensor for landscape or portrait mode.
after messing around i turned on my phone and it synced again with the backup settings that i had just synced to my GMAIL which i use for 2 devices instead of 1. i hadnt thought about it before since i had a vibrant but now my screens color was yellowish tinted. it looked normal from one side (blueish) and yellow straight on or from the other side.
basically changed the setting to be sure and unchecked automatic backup and restore settings under privacy in settings menu on tablet. connected to internet to make sure it deletes googles server copy, and make sure you have background data and autosync on when you uncheck it. then turn them all off and disconnect device from wifi to make sure it doesnt autosync when it is turned on again.
i factory reset my G2x (you may have to hard reset if factory reset doesnt work) and it resynced during initial set of android for gmail. NO MORE YELLOWISH TINT
I believe this can be affected not just by the G tablet but any device also synced to you gmail in addition to your phone which would be changing your settings and causing MANY problems. if you have and CM roms or have that setting try this and post results here.
Hopefully this helps
ummm....I read your post like 3 times and I still don't get exactly what you did.
1. the home orientation settings is in many launcher applications
2. what about the people who only have 1 device synced to a gmail account and still bleed?
3. IIRC backlight bleed is hardware related. It's due to an improper seal between the edge of the lcd and the frame.
i changed the post 2 min after you posted.
there is a setting that lets you flip the screen 180 degrees when auto-switching orientations. mainly ive seen it settings for tablet but it was in my buddies CM settings for his mytouch 3g rom.
use the info for what its worth. just looking to solve these issues so we can have the badass phone we all paid for.
I was expecting a tale of badassery about opening the phone and sealing the screen. Color me disappointed. For the record, the bleed is a hardware issue. No amount of hard resets can change that.

found the fix. return the phone hahah. i am on my 5th and final g2x and there is no bleeding. finally! but if angle it to the side i can see some light from the edge but you can't see it unless your looking at the phone sideways so thats good enough for me. i recommend everyone return them until they get a good one. i made sure to open in at the store and go into a dark place to turn it on to check it before leaving with it again.

Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus running HOT - anyone else?

Love this tablet but this last few days it has started to get really warm on occasion.
On the left side, about an inch in from the SD card slot, the temperature really builds up quickly starting first on the back of the device and eventually getting so hot on the glass it becomes uncomfortable to hold and to swipe. I've seen 48 degrees!
I have noticed this happening when using Dolphin HD browser and particularly if Skype is running in the background.
I wiped the tab, didn't reinstall from market and just loaded Dolphin and it didn't make any difference.
I'm guessing faulty device since there are only a few isolated reports of this online.

Really strange, Phil. Based on your recommendation in "other" forums I turned in my Nook Tab and got a GTab7Plus and I'm just lovin it. Does everything I'd hoped it would do and more I haven't even figured out. So far, (knock on wood) I haven't gotten the Screen of Death nor has the unit gotten hot for any reason and I'm using dolphin browser exclusively. So......you may have a defective unit. Good luck.
Yeah, I think it was faulty. I took it back to Best Buy and they had not had any other returns for this issue.
Unfortunately they are also out of stock so I don't currently have a tablet at all! Seeing what is coming down the pike in the way of tablets I might just wait and see what transpires in the next 3 months. If I get antsy then I'll just pick up another GT7+ (or back to a Nook Tablet if the CM9 project advances quickly).
Also, do you see a color cast on yours at all? I noticed that when there was a white background, for instance reading a book on Kindle or Nook apps, the right lower side of the page had a warm tinge - pink/peach colored. It was quite irritating.
Having issues with Nook app opening my Nook ebooks.

I have received my 7+ and downloaded and installed the Nook and Kindle apps without a hitch. The Kindle books are fine but I seem to be having a problem opening my Nook books. Darn, I am in the midst of a great book and hate reading on my phone.
Any tips on how best to install and manage my Nook ebooks? And, I have a 32gb sd card which I haven't installed but plan to tonight. Will that make a difference? Should I "format" the card before installing on the 7+? How does that work?
Thanks a bunch!
I noticed on the nook software that I needed to open the software and then reopen it before the book would load. Second time is a charm I guess.

Mine as well, in the same location as you specified too. Gets damn hot in that location with I'm using it in the car for navigating with Google Maps and it's plugged into the charger. Also in the same scenario the charge level is still going down and not up
I' ve been using VTL Launcher and had some previous issues with my home wifi (couldn't reconnect so my tab was always trying to find it again and again). After resetting router and mainly uninstalling VTL Launcher my tab stopped to be hot and battery life increased rapidly. So I was almost decided tonreturn it due to this problems but since then everything is finally ok and start to enjoy this tab (previously had GT7 original and Note).
Regarding navigation with google maps- consider that there is also huge use of data amount so warmness is probable. I'm using Sygis Aura and has no problems with hottness and also not original car charger has enough power to charge on the roads.
So far haven't noticed the tab getting hot. Just trying to figure out how to use Kies. What a friggin nightmare! Why have they not simplified the Kies interface? It is so convoluted!

Interesting - but mine was totally stock. Yeah, I had added a ton of apps but it was running regular TouchWizz. My little Nook Color running CM7 has exactly the same apps and doesn't even get warm.
what are you using kies for? my computer (win 7) didn't recognize my tab until
i installed kies, it also installed drivers so i can now transfer files
To FloridaPhil: And how long is your battery life? Is wifi ok? Well I' ve noticed then, that our tab doesn't have still very apropriate task managing and this can be causeb exactly by this. Take a look in settings, applications and battery use...I couldn't believa my eyes but even I'm using good task manager with automatic shutndowns of slected apps, there are still huge amount of running apps that drain battery and may cause getting hot. Next thing as well was a fact, that even when wifi connection held perfectly, there was still word 'searching' each couple of seconds (take a look in wifinsettings...)- so next possible reason for getting warm...

It's only searching because your at the wifi settings screen. If you are at the screen where different wifi networks can be selected, android (logically) thinks you might want to select a different network, so scans. If you STAY on that screen, it assumes you want to keep scanning (why else would you stay on that screen?)
This is something that all wifi enabled android devices do. It's NOT scanning every few seconds if you aren't on that specific settings screen...
Gary
Thanks Gary for reasonable explanation, yes this is logical. I was just confused from this, cause not Galaxy Note, nor previous Tab or Streak was behaving like this. But is true that this is my first honeycomb machine and I may not realise this before or it had been different in settings.

My Galaxy SII (gingerbread, AT&T, SGH-I777) does this as well. Even my iPhone does it.
I'm using Kies Air to wirelessly transfer and synch my contacts, calendar, etc....... Experimented and have transferred photos and some other files. Also worked using the USB cable and my Windows 7 recognized and installed drivers. It recognized the SD card as my E drive.
Regarding the heating up issue, so far I have not experienced this. The battery use is under control when I turn off all wireless when I leave my home.
Getting used to the Touchwiz interface but I also installed Go Launcher EX and use that sometimes.
Video playback is awesome on this little tab; last night I was watching movie trailers and was surprised with the sound as well. The Nook's sound was always a bit weak.
I installed an anti-glare screen film and it is awesome for reading. Doesn't detract from the beautiful display and the fonts are crisp.
Regarding opening my Nook books I realized that it worked as soon as I installed my SD card and I downloaded my books so I wouldn't have to deal with having a wireless connection to read my books.
Playing around with the wallpapers and customizing the Samsung screens and installed a super cool "steam punk skull" live wallpaper and it is amazing! Found it free via the Amazon app store....it is fantastic! I also found other beautiful live wallpapers via the Amazon app store including snow scenes.
The tab connected flawlessly to my Samsung Galaxy 4G T-Mobile phone's access point and used that to stream Pandora and download some Kindle books. It was done in my office which doesn't have the best T-Mobile network access and it was surprisingly fast and smooth. No stuttering of the music and emails and Facebook worked great.
I ordered the 6' long usb cable for the tab via Amazon and it has shipped; hopefully it is well matched and charges up the tab just as well as the stock 3' shortie cable. I noted other comments regarding the slow charging of the tab and found that turning off the wifi or simply shutting it down speeds up the charging dramatically.
So that is my report so far and let me say I am enjoying the 7+ tab immensely.

Well i guess thats pretty normal, mine goes up to 42C sometimes.. I guess it depends on your surrounding and climate.
You sure it's a normal thing (this temperature range)? I'm here in Thailand so the ambient temperature is hot to begin with, but the thing is; with prolonged used my hands get uncomfortable.

[Q] What is this dancing character on my homescreen?

Device: Nexus 5
Android Version: 5.0.1
Just wondering if anyone has had this issue?
This morning when I unlocked my phone there was a small, white, dancing character on my homescreen. I'm not sure whether I pressed on the screen (I had just woken up, was pretty tired) but a full screen recommendation for an app then filled the screen. The recommendation was for a job hunting app called 'Indeed'.
Later on today when I unlocked my phone I'm sure I saw the dancing character again but only for a split second as it was fading away, this time no recommendation popped up.
I might sound like I'm clueless but I've been on the android scene since the days of the Nexus One, I've owned all the Nexus phones and several other Android phones and tablets. In the past I've played around with root, custom roms etc, but my Nexus 5 is stock and always has been.
Does anyone have any advice on wtf is on my phone?
Maybe it's all in your head
Try scanning your system for viruses and adware. If it still gives you a problem then turn off WiFi and use your phone for a day. If the character still comes it means their is something in your phone that is malicious. If it doesn't come then it's most likely an advertising crap intrusion. Either way find the file giving you trouble and delete it. If nothing works then format the phone
Download any free apps recently? If you've never seen it before it's likely from an app that you've recently installed.
Yup, check recently installed applications and do a malware check. After that, maybe its time to catch up on your sleep

Switched from iPhone but my S6 is SO slow it's driving me crazy

Hi everyone,
I've always used iPhone but we switched to the Galaxy S6 a few weeks ago as I wanted to try android. The phone is fine but man it gets SO slow to the point I can barely use it. I'll be just doing normal things on it, or it will be sitting unused for awhile and I'll press the app switcher button and nothing happens. Wait 3 seconds and then it appears. Pick an app same thing nothing happens, then it appears. Or you swipe and it's laggy and slow. A friend said use clean master which when I run it always says freed 600MB of memory and then the problem seems to go away for another hour or so, but I'm constantly having to do this. My iPhone's were never slow at all and you never had to close programs. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but it's driving me crazy to the point I might return it.
The other issue is lots of times when I swipe to unlock, the phone unlocks but then will be running Spotify or Amazon, neither of which are on my homescreen or were running before. Clean master always says Amazon keeps restarting over and over giving my device a fever, but not sure what I can do about that.
Is there anything I should be doing or could do differently? I'm on the Samsung launcher, was on Google's for awhile but prefer Samsung's since it shows notification count, and I have the Google keyboard as well. It's not all the time, and it's not always debilitating like where it's full on frozen, it's more it just feels really slow. I had the Nexus 5 last year for maybe 2 months before switching back to iPhone but I never had this issue with it. I feel like the S6 is even slower than the Nexus 5 was to the point I'd almost rather use that phone, but I feel like this is ridiculous since I paid $250 for the Nexus 5 and the S6 was $750 so you'd expect it would run better!
Don't know what to tell you but to try a factory reset. I've had my phone for two months now and it's been blazing fast the whole time.

My S6 is damn fast, real you should try factory reset.

Buy this app and disable all unused or unwanted things to free up memory. It should help you a lot.
Does it back up all my info when I do that or is it like starting over? Not a huge deal I guess but yeah maybe I'll try it. Like for example sometimes I'll press home to turn on the screen, but I'll I guess accidentally press it twice so it goes to the camera. That's fine, but then I'll press home again, or back, and like nothing happens it just stays on the camera, not frozen like the image is updating live, then a second or two later it will go back to the home screen. Or I'll swipe to unlock on the lock screen, it does the bubble effect and nothing happens. I wait a sec swipe again, does the bubble as well, except it unlocks before I fully finish swiping, as in it was in the process of unlocking and I was just doing it twice.
One quick thing also, do you guys use Clean Master? It seems like it's required as it clears lots of ram and then the phone immediately speeds up. Then I read somewhere that it's better to let the phone manage ram and not this app, but I feel like the phone doesn't do a good job of it, unless having the app installed is preventing the phone from doing it itself? Maybe I'll try without it when I reset it.

Well, that might be a key to solving your problem. Before Reset try first just to uninstall that "garbage" of app. It may solve your problem right away. I had some friends that also have that app installed and also problem with slow phone. Just uninstall of Clean Master solve that.
Let us know what happened.
Well that's the trade off between android and iPhone at the moment probably. iPhone may require less tweaking and trail and testing and how a phone can work.

Clean Master is real good to clean junk files or temp files but for the memory part, plz buy the Package Disabler Pro as this is the only one real works now on S6.
I believe Samsung got PC software to backup your data on Windows.
If you do factory reset and no use then it's safe to guess your phone got hardware problem and you should ask for a replacement.
Question though, where did you buy the phone? Are you 100% sure its an authentic galaxy s6? I came across a similar thing but its with the iPhone, a friend of mine was complaining about having drop calls with his iphone 6, I decided to play around with his iPhone 6 and was wondering why it was hella slow and lags a lot, I use iOS a lot(iPad, iPod Touch, and previous iPhones) and i know it should't lag especially a new version of the iphone, and also noticed somethings are off like the apple logo, screen resoluton, etc. After 2 min, I realized its a fake iPhone6 than runs an iOS skinned android, I was actually amazed how well it was made for a clone. If factory reset didn't help, then it's probably hardware defective or its fake.
Depending how long you've had it can you take it into the shop you got it from, show them the problems and get a replacement?
Mine is pretty much super quick, although I do use Nova Launcher Prime as my launcher, and Tesla Unread to show unread notifications for apps, and it is much quicker than the Samsung Launcher and a lot more customisable.
Also I have noticed some themes can slow the phone down immensely so unless you really want to customise the phone leave it on the default theme. (Nova Launcher Icons and different wallpapers don't slow anything down).
Also the Smart Manager on the phone, helps to keep the recent apps menu working nice and quick as it can slow down to the point that pressing it takes .5 of a second for the recent apps to show up.
Lastly, the S6 is notorious for faulty home buttons, so weird home button behaviour could be a slightly faulty button.

I second that. You can use the following ways to confirm by downloading Antutu Officer from Google Play.

Thanks everyone, it should be authentic I bought it from Rogers directly, not a dealer store but actual corporate one and we bought 2 at the same time. I did a factory reset last night and it's WAY faster now. I didn't put Clean Master on it yet just been using it as is but been great so far. I didn't put all my apps back on, just the ones I use, where as last time I'd just put on everything even if I seldom use it, so will try to add them slowly. CM was always saying before that Amazon was giving my phone a fever, restarting 50 times in the past 15 minutes type thing, even though I use that app constantly. Thanks!

There is something wrong with your software. I have been using my phone for about a month. No issues here.
Yep there is something wrong with your device. I always try to do speed test whenever I gets a chance to have my friend's i6 on my hand. With 250+ apps and 3gigs out of 32 free I can say that s6 opens apps a second faster than i6. There's some scroll lag on chrome but I fixed it with tweaking flags on chrome. If any app lags on this on this device then it's the result of poor coding.
Try to swap your device
