[Q] What is this dancing character on my homescreen? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Device: Nexus 5
Android Version: 5.0.1
Just wondering if anyone has had this issue?
This morning when I unlocked my phone there was a small, white, dancing character on my homescreen. I'm not sure whether I pressed on the screen (I had just woken up, was pretty tired) but a full screen recommendation for an app then filled the screen. The recommendation was for a job hunting app called 'Indeed'.
Later on today when I unlocked my phone I'm sure I saw the dancing character again but only for a split second as it was fading away, this time no recommendation popped up.
I might sound like I'm clueless but I've been on the android scene since the days of the Nexus One, I've owned all the Nexus phones and several other Android phones and tablets. In the past I've played around with root, custom roms etc, but my Nexus 5 is stock and always has been.
Does anyone have any advice on wtf is on my phone?

Maybe it's all in your head

Try scanning your system for viruses and adware. If it still gives you a problem then turn off WiFi and use your phone for a day. If the character still comes it means their is something in your phone that is malicious. If it doesn't come then it's most likely an advertising crap intrusion. Either way find the file giving you trouble and delete it. If nothing works then format the phone

Download any free apps recently? If you've never seen it before it's likely from an app that you've recently installed.

Yup, check recently installed applications and do a malware check. After that, maybe its time to catch up on your sleep

Virtuous v0.8.1 (Vision) Troubleshoot! Help please! :)

Hello everyone, I successfully managed to Perma-Root my T-Mobile G2 as of this morning.
When I first installed this ROM (Virtuous v0.8.1) I really had high hopes for it, however when I first installed the room via clockwork reboot, I just clicked for a backup of my Stock OS - no clearing of data or cache files.
Upon the completion of the ROM my phone promptly rebooted. The whole process of rebooting took alone 5 minutes (at least) and I started to get weary seeing has how my phone stayed on the home HTC Screen (Boot-up Screen) for quite a while. And just before I was thinking of pulling the battery because it seemed as if my phone froze, it launched. However in doing so, everything appeared extremely laggy.
Everything was force-closing, constantly, even after I said to force close the program. It made it absolutely daunting, and I wondered what the hell did I do my phone! It was extremely irritating to navigate back to ROM Manager and hopefully be able to restore my phone back to normal. Eventually I ended up rebooting my phone to it's original status, and decided perhaps it was just all the previous apps and data on my phone causing all the aforementioned complications.
However I felt as if I should try again with Vision (Or what I believe to be the Desire Z Rom for my G2) and decided to clear all data on my phone when prompted - as well backing up my data for a second time.
In doing so, the restart process went smoothly as before. Then came the reboot/loading of my phone, and the screen didn't appear nearly as long. So there was a sigh* of relief there for me. My phone loaded and every thing appeared to working just fine and dandy - albeit with the expense of virtually all my phone data (Besides data that was obviously kept on my SD Card). Thus I was getting quite content with Sense and I actually kept it. Since I was extremely tired as I installed Sense/Rooted my phone very early in the morning (and since it's winter break for me, my sleep schedule has seemingly reversed) I decided to go and sleep.
Waking back up now, I decide to test some things, and ensure everything was going well. I sent a couple texts out, browsed the web, watched YouTube, and everything appeared to check out as running the way it should - except text messaging.
I was completely baffled as to why no one was replying my texts - I thought well maybe since it's New Years Eve people must be busy etc. No Harm done there right?
So I decided to pass it off, only to realize that hours later I receive several responses from the people that I've texted/new text massages from other friends. Yet they're hours behind!!!!!
Anybody know what's up with that? It's basically impossible for me to hold a conversation via text message on my phone now as messages are greatly delayed. I never had this problem with my Phone using the Stock OS of my G2, yet as soon as I install Sense this problem arises (and apparently it's Android 2.2.1) I could have sworn my G2 originally was 2.2.2? I'm sorry I'm just barely starting to get in the whole process ROMs/Rooting my phone, and getting more interested in Android.
Is there a specific Desire Z allocated ROM Designed for the G2? If so can someone please point me towards it? The description for the Virtuous Rom read to me that it was a Desire Z Port - so I thought I was downloading the correct thing.
However I'm sure if I'm having this problem, other people might have come across this problem? I mean it's no biggy for me to reflash back to Stock, and pretend everything is the same way it was - but I'm really taking a liking to Sense, and I want to see if there are at least alternatives - or perhaps I just installed the wrong ROM.
Thank you for your time!

Switched from iPhone but my S6 is SO slow it's driving me crazy

Hi everyone,
I've always used iPhone but we switched to the Galaxy S6 a few weeks ago as I wanted to try android. The phone is fine but man it gets SO slow to the point I can barely use it. I'll be just doing normal things on it, or it will be sitting unused for awhile and I'll press the app switcher button and nothing happens. Wait 3 seconds and then it appears. Pick an app same thing nothing happens, then it appears. Or you swipe and it's laggy and slow. A friend said use clean master which when I run it always says freed 600MB of memory and then the problem seems to go away for another hour or so, but I'm constantly having to do this. My iPhone's were never slow at all and you never had to close programs. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but it's driving me crazy to the point I might return it.
The other issue is lots of times when I swipe to unlock, the phone unlocks but then will be running Spotify or Amazon, neither of which are on my homescreen or were running before. Clean master always says Amazon keeps restarting over and over giving my device a fever, but not sure what I can do about that.
Is there anything I should be doing or could do differently? I'm on the Samsung launcher, was on Google's for awhile but prefer Samsung's since it shows notification count, and I have the Google keyboard as well. It's not all the time, and it's not always debilitating like where it's full on frozen, it's more it just feels really slow. I had the Nexus 5 last year for maybe 2 months before switching back to iPhone but I never had this issue with it. I feel like the S6 is even slower than the Nexus 5 was to the point I'd almost rather use that phone, but I feel like this is ridiculous since I paid $250 for the Nexus 5 and the S6 was $750 so you'd expect it would run better!
Don't know what to tell you but to try a factory reset. I've had my phone for two months now and it's been blazing fast the whole time.

My S6 is damn fast, real you should try factory reset.

Buy this app and disable all unused or unwanted things to free up memory. It should help you a lot.
Does it back up all my info when I do that or is it like starting over? Not a huge deal I guess but yeah maybe I'll try it. Like for example sometimes I'll press home to turn on the screen, but I'll I guess accidentally press it twice so it goes to the camera. That's fine, but then I'll press home again, or back, and like nothing happens it just stays on the camera, not frozen like the image is updating live, then a second or two later it will go back to the home screen. Or I'll swipe to unlock on the lock screen, it does the bubble effect and nothing happens. I wait a sec swipe again, does the bubble as well, except it unlocks before I fully finish swiping, as in it was in the process of unlocking and I was just doing it twice.
One quick thing also, do you guys use Clean Master? It seems like it's required as it clears lots of ram and then the phone immediately speeds up. Then I read somewhere that it's better to let the phone manage ram and not this app, but I feel like the phone doesn't do a good job of it, unless having the app installed is preventing the phone from doing it itself? Maybe I'll try without it when I reset it.

Well, that might be a key to solving your problem. Before Reset try first just to uninstall that "garbage" of app. It may solve your problem right away. I had some friends that also have that app installed and also problem with slow phone. Just uninstall of Clean Master solve that.
Let us know what happened.
Well that's the trade off between android and iPhone at the moment probably. iPhone may require less tweaking and trail and testing and how a phone can work.

Clean Master is real good to clean junk files or temp files but for the memory part, plz buy the Package Disabler Pro as this is the only one real works now on S6.
I believe Samsung got PC software to backup your data on Windows.
If you do factory reset and no use then it's safe to guess your phone got hardware problem and you should ask for a replacement.
Question though, where did you buy the phone? Are you 100% sure its an authentic galaxy s6? I came across a similar thing but its with the iPhone, a friend of mine was complaining about having drop calls with his iphone 6, I decided to play around with his iPhone 6 and was wondering why it was hella slow and lags a lot, I use iOS a lot(iPad, iPod Touch, and previous iPhones) and i know it should't lag especially a new version of the iphone, and also noticed somethings are off like the apple logo, screen resoluton, etc. After 2 min, I realized its a fake iPhone6 than runs an iOS skinned android, I was actually amazed how well it was made for a clone. If factory reset didn't help, then it's probably hardware defective or its fake.
Depending how long you've had it can you take it into the shop you got it from, show them the problems and get a replacement?
Mine is pretty much super quick, although I do use Nova Launcher Prime as my launcher, and Tesla Unread to show unread notifications for apps, and it is much quicker than the Samsung Launcher and a lot more customisable.
Also I have noticed some themes can slow the phone down immensely so unless you really want to customise the phone leave it on the default theme. (Nova Launcher Icons and different wallpapers don't slow anything down).
Also the Smart Manager on the phone, helps to keep the recent apps menu working nice and quick as it can slow down to the point that pressing it takes .5 of a second for the recent apps to show up.
Lastly, the S6 is notorious for faulty home buttons, so weird home button behaviour could be a slightly faulty button.

I second that. You can use the following ways to confirm by downloading Antutu Officer from Google Play.

Thanks everyone, it should be authentic I bought it from Rogers directly, not a dealer store but actual corporate one and we bought 2 at the same time. I did a factory reset last night and it's WAY faster now. I didn't put Clean Master on it yet just been using it as is but been great so far. I didn't put all my apps back on, just the ones I use, where as last time I'd just put on everything even if I seldom use it, so will try to add them slowly. CM was always saying before that Amazon was giving my phone a fever, restarting 50 times in the past 15 minutes type thing, even though I use that app constantly. Thanks!

There is something wrong with your software. I have been using my phone for about a month. No issues here.
Yep there is something wrong with your device. I always try to do speed test whenever I gets a chance to have my friend's i6 on my hand. With 250+ apps and 3gigs out of 32 free I can say that s6 opens apps a second faster than i6. There's some scroll lag on chrome but I fixed it with tweaking flags on chrome. If any app lags on this on this device then it's the result of poor coding.
Try to swap your device

+info? :good:
How is the phone so far?

How could this person be locating my devices?

I'm sure I'll get some haters, who think I am simply nuts but this is a REAL problem that I've got to solve.
For the last 6 years I've had a mysterious stalker and hacker, who renders most of my and my family's devices nonfunctional and breaks into my accounts and generally makes my life much harder. It has recently come to light that it isn't a hacker SINGULAR but at least 3 guys, hellbent on destroying me: my daughter's father, her uncle, who is a military hacker and their friend, who managed to ingratiate himself with me, until my daughter's father confessed, when I confronted him with evidence against him and his brother, saying he didn't mean for it to get this out of hand. Well, thanks for the heads up but it's a little late, because it IS this out of hand and the wheels of justice grind slowly.
Meanwhile, I am still hacked, even worse now, because his brother got out of the military and moved back to town and has a lot more time and access now. Calls and texts are being intercepted so frequently, that I now use Google Voice/Hangouts to communicate, knowing that nothing I say is ever private but at least people get my messages and I get their calls that way.
I'm looking for a job and I need a device that he won't be able to spy on, so I went to Best Buy and purchased a phone card and moderately priced android phone and took it home to resume my job hunt. I planned never to call any of my usual contacts with the phone but just use it for work stuff. Within hours, it was acting buggy and when I restarted it, it did not go to the regular black screen that says "your device is encrypted for security" but showed my regular background and said "please enter your password when starting android". On my note 8 and 9, that would often happen and when I went to security options, secure startup would be disabled. I checked and secure startup was still supposedly enabled. In ADB "adb shell getprop ro.crypto.state" returned "unencrypted".
I returned the phone and purchased a Google Pixel, hoping their physical security device MIGHT be more effective than Knox at protecting me from this guy. I purchased a brand new sim card and spent another 50 bucks on a phone card, from a different company.
Since my daughter's father has moved within a half-mile of me (despite having no contact with her and very little with me) 4 times now, I speculated that he was, perhaps, using a directional yagi antenna to scan my area for new device beacons and then (skip forward a few steps) find out what apps are installed on those devices, to determine if they are mine. With that in mind, I never even turned the Pixel on at my house.
That night, I took the phone to a random emergency room with secure wifi, to which I know the password and proceeded to set it up. I made a new google account, as usual and installed a bunch of random apps, such as black dating apps (since I am white, I figured that, if my theory was right, it might throw them off my scent) and games I would never play and apps for banks of which I am not a member. By the first time I restarted the phone, still at the emergency room, it had the exact same problem. It purported to be encrypted but (adb later verified) it was not. Apparently, the cheap phone faired slightly better than the pixel, in this department, because the first one was reencrypted upon reset, while the Pixel was not. I never activated or inserted a sim card in the pixel and while I had my regular phone and tablet along with me, they were powered off, in the car.
I was pretty sure, after the first phone was compromised, that I was onto something with my beacon frame theory but it would not explain what happened at the emergency room, unless there is a tracking device in my car, which IS likely, because I continually find my car torn up in all sorts of ways. They even broke off the panel on the driver's door with lock and window switches and the lid of my center console and I continually find the carpet pulled away from the trim. Then again, they also put something caustic in the wiper fluid tank, which destroyed both tank and windshield, so it could also have all been done simply out of malice.
Having no better ideas, I ran a bug detector over my car and found that there IS a radio signal being emitted from somewhere around the gearshift or cd player. I took apart the area around the gearshift and found nothing. In that department, the only remaining possibility is that they've actually put something inside of the cd player itself, the screen of which quit working a while back. I have the ribbon cable to fix it, so maybe I'll get lucky when I crack it open in a bit. The signal DOES appear strongest at the CD player but it could be anything, even catalytic converters can emit radio signals.
Assuming my bug theory is wrong, does anyone have any other idea of how these guys could have discovered and hacked those phones? I've got to find a way to evade these people or I'll never have anything like a normal life, until they're finally in jail.
Wow!
I have not heard of such hacks, even when it comes to national security.
What is the motive of these three people ?
I have no clue but with there skill in not sure an iphone would fare much better

Device goes nuts

Greetings. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and a Samsung Galaxy Note 9. I also have 2 Dell Windows laptops, one's an older 2017 Inspiron with Win10 Pro and the other is a 2021 Inspiron with Win 11 Pro. I use the Note 20U most of the time and I use the newer laptop more now but still use them both quite a bit.
Every so often, they will just go completely insane on me. It's usually the phone because I have that on me almost all the time, but the laptops aren't immune to the very strange behaviors that happen. It's kind of hard to explain because I don't really know where to start. With the phone, it's weird stuff like the accidental touch protection will virtually render my phone unusable for a time because there will be either a blue or red dotted circle on the screen that will go to wherever I touch the screen when I touch it but will go back to some other part of the screen when I take my finger off but it won't do anything when I touch the screen and I have to hold down the side and volume down buttons until it either powers down or gives me the power options screen. If it shuts down it's better than when it goes to the menu because when it goes to the power options menu. I get stuck there because it still won't recognize my touch or allow me to do anything so I have to hold down the buttons again until it just shuts off. Sometimes that will fix it but only for a few minutes and sometimes the circles will just still be there doing the same thing when the phone reboots. This will go on for hours to a day or 2 and then just not do it for awhile.
That's just one that sticks out to me but it will do other strange things like that to varying degrees and periods. Another one that gets my nerves stressing is it will make random phone and or video calls on either the phone's mobile system, and/or social media apps while I'm just trying to type text to send a message. Sometimes I'll lose full functionality of the touch screen and/or keyboard. Settings will get randomly changed on me... all kinds of very strange, annoying and sometimes damaging things concerning both data loss and personal issues with text messages and media being sent when it wasn't intended to and to other people than who it was intended for.
It's totally nuts and I know I sound totally nuts saying this but it actually seems like my devices are either being possessed or that somebody else is taking some kind of control of my devices. It happens at the same time to one, some, or all of them, it goes on anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days and then it just stops and they all behave for awhile. But then that dreadful day comes when it starts happening again.
I belong to a few forums that deal with device maintenance and various kinds of crapware and security issues and I visit them to keep up with things. I keep my devices updated and maintained fairly well for the common stuff. I take the advise I'm given in the forums, I run the apps they suggest, I run scans for all kinds of things that I read and find out about related to these issues and the devices all come back clean.
This has happened several times over the past 3 years or so and each time similar behaviors. It happens no matter which phone I use or which laptop I use. It even seem like the device(s) "fight" with me in real time.
I'm just a regular dude, I don't have any major stuff going on in my life that I think anyone would give a darn about. I'm not James Bond or some secret spy or witness. I'm not wealthy nor do I have any high, or even mediocre profile anything going on. I'm a construction painter with barely a pot to pee in and I have absolutely nothing highly exciting going on where I think anyone would have the slightest bit of interest in messing with my devices or my life in any other way so I don't see any reason why any entity would have a reason to either.
There are other really weird things that happen too but this is already turning into a long post and I'm tired and can't think of any off the top of my head right now. I just wanted to put this out there to see if anyone recognizes anything similar or has any input as to why this happens and has any other input on how it can be fixed, if it can or anything really. I am just now starting a log on when it happens and for how long and trying to keep better track of exactly what strange behaviors are actually happening but sometimes, and most of the time it's at the worst time because I'll be busy with work or other things going on and I forget what exactly was happening and for exactly how long it was by the time I get to a way to document it.
One last thing about it is that while I'm running scans and changing settings and trying to combat the madness, iy doesn't seem to change anything and sometimes even makes it seem to get worse, and then it just stops out of nowhere and it's like nothing had happened at all. except that I ended up sending a message to the wrong person or sent pictures or a video to someone who it wasn't meant for or I just deleted my entire music folder when I was trying to rename a file. Very very strange and unbelievable stuff, and yet it actually happens, and then just stops.
Try starting with one device and the specific issues. Devices don't go insane...

Keyboard issue on brand new and warranty replacement - long time returning user

Hi. I'm not your typical noob person, I simply haven't had an issue I couldn't find a solution for that required me to come to XDA in a very very long time.
Long story short, I got the Galaxy S8+ 5G tablet brand new from T-Mobile in less than a week.. immediately noticed issues with swiping/glide on both Samsung and Gboard keyboards(Gboard is my STRONG preference for a long time now)
This is brand new out of the box, before a screen protector was added or any apps installed. Still did all the standard trouble shooting - installed update, no dice. Force closed each keyboard, wiped cache and data on each keyboard, tried turning sensitivity off and on and.. no dice. Restarted into boot mode and wiped cache.. most of these things not really something that should apply to a brand new out of the box tablet except update and factory reset - both of which I did, neither of which, nor anything else has helped.
I even added a tempered glass screen protector thinking it's TOO sensitive, and even after that, and again trying to toggle sensitivity setting in the settings.. still just will not swipe.
I type this currently on my Samsung Galaxy S20 FE5G absolutely flawlessly. I can type without looking at the phone at all and type near perfect accuracy with just the occasional need to choose a different word in the suggestion bar.. that is using Gboard "glide". The tablet using Gboard bloating mode is almost an identical match to the size of this keyboard and would make it a nearly *perfect* way of typing just as quickly and accurately on the new tablet.. I understand that some of the accuracy comes from use of the keyboard and locally stored into but.. the tablet types gibberish half the time. If I push FAR harder than I should have to while gliding, a few words may work.
Called T-Mobile Saturday, had a warranty replacement sent(God I didn't want a refurbished device) because the only natural conclusion I could come up with is the digitizer has an issue, maybe during shipping.. etc. I don't know..
Got it last night, booted it up, this time I made them include a "invisible shield glass fusion+" screen protector which went on flawlessly and should have no effect on typing at all.. and it's got the same EXACT issue. Maybe a HAIR better, but still completely unusable in my opinion.
I want this for work, the tablet and this phone and a 4k Chromecast, with features like dex, second screen, etc.. there's just about no scenario I can think of where this WON'T be beneficial in any support scenario..
T-Mobile already wants to give me the tablet for free, I've had so many issues with them for so long they switched me to a "business select" package only certain managers can apply, and I get unlimited everything for each device at $25 per device.. forever. No matter how many.
No discounts for auto pay or mass numbers or.. just a flat number that beats the company I was going to switch to when I unlocked my phone 12 days ago.
But I've been a customer customer for 8 years and a T-MOBILE customer since before the first iPhone smartphone was released.. even a few years before that when the best phone you could get had a slide out keyboard and basic touch functions..
So they are supposed to be calling me within the hour, I expected to see numerous threads or posts about this issue, because clearly it isn't ME..
I find some other links I've tried fixes from like:
Strange Gboard bug temporarily breaks glide typing, here's how to fix it [Update]
Over the past 24 hours or so, users have started noting a strange issue with Google’s Gboard keyboard on Android,...
9to5google.com
And see this post of Galaxy phones describing exactly the same issue
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS22/comments/u8y4cz
and describing it happening with a specific update..
I've got 2 devices, the first is brand new and factory reset as of last night, has a glass screen protector, and the refurbished one in front of me with the same issue.. I've restored data so I can continue using it, but tried all the SAME fixes and nothing.. and T-Mobile is calling in 45 minutes or so.
Obviously I'd like to keep the brand new device rather than the refurbished one- but IS THERE A FIX, or anything I can do with them on the phone.. I got a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and aftermarket case.. I can type using the keyboard obviously, but I typically can type WAY faster with Gboard the way I am on my phone right now..
I tried doing searches on XDA but it seems like their search functionality has changed for the worse in the years I haven't been here.. that or I can't find the advanced search and forum search I KNOW I used to use daily.. not in the app, the mobile page, or desktop version.
And because it isn't worth it's own post I'll ask one more question -originally I had them send me a Galaxy tab 7 FE 5G becauseb the S20 I'm using still works so well and it was only $100 if I added the line.. and it's just an oversized worse version of my phone.(but don't recall it having this issue now that I think about it) Which is why I'm here now with this tablet..
The problem created by that is I can't tell the pen for that tablet and the new one apart, and here https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=11342&idPhone2=10922# it is showing the new one has less latency, Bluetooth, etc..
Part of the reason they are calling this morning is they were like "oh, just keep the Galaxy tab 7 for free, on us"
Me: "I don't want that oversized garbage, that's why I'm ordering the 8+!"
T-Mobile guy: "Oh, well then return the 7 and you can have the 8+ on us!"
Then I've been trying to get a shipping label for 11 days now, only to find out that he never put in the system that I wanted to return the device and he already voided out the equipment plan for it.. meaning I'm stuck with a tablet I don't even want- and can't tell which s-pen is supposed to be the better pen!
I mean, the chance I'll lose one is so high I won't return the pen and keep it as a backup.. but.. I'd still like to know how to tell the difference, when I attach either one it connects with no issue and I can't find anywhere that shows the pen type connected!
I'm so sorry this is so long, but like I said.. I normally do not need to come here and get my issues resolved myself, it's what I do for work.. and I haven't needed to root/rom a device in so long that I just kinda.. stopped.
(But I'm not going to lie, I got super excited when I came here and there seems to be the option to root/ROM and that it seems like a well supported device in that way! I've kind of dreaded KNOX because previously I never could.. but I'll look into that later once I fix my CURRENT issues..!)
Best I can do as far as pic of S-Pens https://photos.app.goo.gl/pfqKMiiG49L21gx7A
