So...I've had my Mytouch 4G rooted and running CM7 Preview for a little bit.
Last night I decided to put the Eng Boot 'cause I read is the only way to change the splash screen. All seemed fine, no error message. After I rebooted I was graced with a black screen. Now the phone won't turn on.
I am still under my remorse period, but I have no insurance. If I send this back to T-mo will they be able to figure out I messed around with it? Am I SOL?
What if I add the insurance and call saying I lost it, thus paying the premium instead of buying new?
Any advice from people who had to deal with this before?
A very similar thing happened to me, but I was not under the remorse period even. I sent my phone back rooted and unable to be turned on without problem.

Can you get back in the bootloader? Power and Volume down together. This is a likely problem where the clockwork recovery never flashed properly. I always test the recovery first before flashing any ROMS or other stuff. Sometimes the clockwork recovery does not take and you have to do it a second time.

na, I won't even turn on. The only sign of life is a solid led light when I plug the charger, nothing else.

By the way, what did you tell the company? and what company was it?
I have a dead one too, and I discovered that holding both volume buttons while connecting to USB results in 5 vibe pulses and a device being detected: "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" in Windows.
Any ideas what this can be used for?
I am gonna have to send it back soon since I finally got a good screen, but I can mess around with it until then.

Not the same as sending it back, but I returned a phone with S=OFF and they didn't look even look at the store.
I doubt that they would come back to you after the phone made it to the recertification center. It would be a good 2-3 weeks before a person even touches the phone to inspect it. It would be easier for them just to reflash over it with whatever serial connection they have.

Search the dev section threads - there is a stock recovery in one of the threads.
For those of you that cannot get into bootloader and absolutely nothing happens when you press volume down/power button (try several times and be real sure...) - TMo probably will not be able to tell what happened if the device is totally dead - so go ahead and return it

Title says it.
Doesn't matter what I'm doing, any app, any time, it will randomly vibrate and go back as if I hit the back button.
It seems to happen especially when I tap something.
Ex. On the xda android app, I tap into a thread, loads up, I feel my phone vibrate and it goes back.
Its really frustrating. I never noticed it until I started flashing roms. I always flash back to stock & wipe data bla bla bla so I know I'm not doing anything wrong there.
Anyone?

It might be a malfunctioning button. I had a similar issue with my home button where the phone would go nuts at random times with the screens switching back and forth. It's pretty rare, but when it happens it's usually hardware related.
Well that's just wonderful. Aka I'm screwed.

How are you screwed? Backup with TiBu, flash back to stock w/ ODIN and take it to a AT&T repair center and they can swap you out with another device.
I got this on upgrade through Amazon. At&t wont swap it unless I got it through them. Only way I can do it is through Amazon and my 30 days are already up so Idk how that would work...

Not true. I bought my Captivate from Radioshack and the AT&T warranty center replaced the phone for me w/o any issues. As long as you did not buy it from a guy who found it when it fell-from-the-truck, it should be fine.

what if its past the 30 days? and do i need my receipt from Amazon or anything like that?
Mine also does this, instead I've noticed it does it with the home button. Mine causes it to trigger the search button. I've noticed since I've switched to Froyo though that the problem doesn't occur as often, but it still does it probably once or twice a day.

What ROM are you running? I am having the same issues, but I have it with both the back AND the Home buttons. It seemed to not be as bad with the Stock JF6
I've went to the AT&T Warranty Center with a phone that refused to turn on/charge/etc.
All they asked of me was my phone number. They checked the phone out, etc. and gave me another one.
I think I might have figured it out. I work in a warehouse in Spokane Washington and right now its colder than tits out. Might be the phone getting to cold. Ill know after today n ill let you guys know
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Mine does it in a warm room, outside, freakin anywhere. BUT I did switch from stock JF6, off of a Vibrant ROM. It hasn't happened once today.
I also found out that as far as the repair centers go, if you get a new device you are VERY lucky. Most of the time you are going to get a referbished item. They go in range from the 1006-1010 phones.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I've got the same problem going on with my captivate. I tried a couple different ROM's to see if it had any effect. It was happening on Perception build 4, Axura RC1, and on stock. I'm guessing it's a hardware issue, but if someone's found a solution, please keep us updated!
I have the same problem but with the search button. It happens everywhere, but the other night it was freezing so i was sitting next to a space heater and it really wigged out.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You might try this.
Okay guys---first post after lurking and learning for awhile. Try not to ROFL with this suggestion. I've owned my captivate for a bit over a month. Before ever turning it on I put a high-priced screen protector in place. Immediately I was plagued with the problem of the buttons doing things without asking. Press the home button and get search, vice versa and every possible combination. Took it back to the phone shop and this 15-year old looking sales guy took one look and asked if I minded if he trimmed a quarter of an inch off the bottom of the screen protector. I said no and in five minutes I left with a captivate that no longer mis-fires with every touch. Now, I suppose you guys with this problem don't even have a screen protector in place.
FishDoc
I have a screen protector and I've considered that being the problem. Haven't used my phone much today so I haven't really noticed it but it has happened a few times...especially in the xda app. Ugh this phone is gonna be the death of me

Should not matter. I was past 30 days. I would've returned the phone and avoided the hassle if it was in 30 days. Surprisingly it took me less than 5 minutes to get a replacement phone in the warranty center.
All they asked me was the phone number of the account and name on the account and my ID to confirm that I was the owner of the phone. No receipt was asked.

I found out from the service center in my area. 0-30 days, brand new phone. 31 days-1 year, most likely a referb phone, but you could get lucky and get a new one. Over 1 year you're SOL.
I have a 1007, and was offered a 1008. The ranges run from 1006-1010, 1010 being the newest batch, and I of course was going for a 1010. I decided to skip the 1008, and wait to see if they got any new shipments in.
I'd been have tons of problems with the buttons on mine, the Home and Back were mental! I went back to stock JF6, I only had a couple random presses of the back button. Right now I'm running Assonance 2.0, it's i9000JK3 based and Modem. Not a single random pressed all day today. I had pretty heavy use today
so i did some tweaking on my phone and i think it's fixed, at least for now. i found that the stock jf6 rom had the most issues with it, so i flashed jh3. from there, i flashed up to perception7, and i haven't had the issue again yet.
hey ev1
yesterday i was using my sensation without problem. ate a dinner in the shopping center and after that i tried to call someone but when pressing the power button on the sensy nothing happened. then when i went to the car tried to charge the phone but no led light came on (orange charging led). I'm unable to power on the fone since then.
anyone experienced the same and was able to solve the problem without taking the phone to warranty?
i had android revolution hd latest rom. and my phone is from ebay, my best guess is that it's unlocked but not from the factory, and that voids the warranty in my country, so I'm not sure what to do.
tnx for helping in advance
remove battery for little while, place it back and try charging again
if it doesn't light up, just leave it there a little while ... 15mins? 30mins?
try and power up after. gd luck

did something like that, charged it for whole night but no success...
if the battery is totally dead would the charging led light up? or the phone powers up?
Try plugging the phone in via usb or ac. Then try the battery pull and power up. You may need to either buy a battery charger or another battery to power up so you can get into recovery and flash a different clockwork version.
It sounds like the clockwork charging issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198585
Once you get it started make sure you have the latest recovery. You can update using Rom Manager.
well it seems its not the battery. put an evo3d battery inside which is fully charged and it still won't turn on phone into the trash i think

I repair phones for a living and I have personally seen 4 sensations come in for this exact reason.
it seems, even mid-use, that it powers down for some reason, and just doesnt come back. It happens to rooted and non-rooted alike, and I threw my entire arsenal at these things and they dont respond again. it jsut seems to be a factory defect. One that I really hope doesnt happen to mine :[
sorry to say, but in my professional opinion, theres not a lot you can do
I seem to have the same issue.
Did a Reboot, and then no more.
Had the Charger cable in.
Now the only thing that happens when i connect to USB, is a QHSUSB_DLOAD device ( Unkown device , no driver found. )
I only had it for 1 day...
Edit: now i have to wait 2 to 5 working days for a new one. poor me.
Put a multimeter to the battery, 4,6Volt so no problem there.
I had rooted my friends Sensation and running a Android Revolution. The same thing happened to her phone I'm trying to boost the battery to see if I can get some action but, it's not looking good.
She had insurance on the phone and said she lost it, so she's getting a new one, but I'm glad to know that it might have happened anyways. I wasn't overclocking the phone, and I didn't flash a new radio (which are two things that can cause bricks right?)
Is there anything else I might try? Use it as a paperweight? lol
Edit: To clarify, the phone was working fine, and just randomly rebooted and then became completely unresponsive. My friend battery pulled as it was completely frozen, when she put the battery back in, nothing happened. No LED when charging, no booting, nothing.

I work for the bestbuy group and i can tell you that if it was bought in the uk, it should be absolutely fine to send back, so long as it hasn't got water damage it would be cool to send off.
HTC decide if it's under warranty and whether or not it has liquid damage.
An engineer won't touch it (in carphone warehouse) if they're not qualified.
If your in the UK, call this number 08719090109 it's a lot quicker than going into a carphone warehouse, you'll wait 2 weeks if you go in store, 4 - 5 days if you call that number and ship it yourself.
Some carphones have fools working for them, but believe me lad, i'm no idiot.

A bad idea, the person in the shop will do an ESN check and see that the phone wasn't even bought from them, or a return, ppl try these things all the time, they don't get away with it, unless the consultant is an absolute mushroom.
My advice, just send the thing back to HTC.

Shouldn't make any difference, are you in the UK? We're they from the UK? You will have to send it back to the place where they bought it from, it's less than a year since the sensation was released so it is certainly under warranty.
Just send it back after you've tried everything, and it seems that you have.
Did you try boosting the battery? Sometimes this has an effect, although it would seem from what you've said that something a little more difficult to fix has gone wrong.
Hope you get it sorted.
PS: Don't go into a carphone and tell them that you bought it from them, because they'll check and you'll look like a div, find out where the person on ebay bought it from and send it back to there with the advice sheet / receipt you got from ebay to HTC or at least call / email to see what's required to send it back.
Good luck m8.
Hello, I have an HTC inspire and been rooted for a few months. The volume+ has been very glitchy most of the time not working. Even tried a custom Rom and still bad issue. This noting I re locked the phone and put it back to the way it was when I got it. So far today the volume button has worked every time with no problem. My question when rooting the phone is their a chance that rooting caused the hardware issue, that it corrupted the software enlighten to make it glitchy in that way. Is their a way to confirm that. Just wondering because I hate haveing this un-rooted phone lol.
Custom ROMs would not affect your hardware buttons unless you installed an app that messed with the volume.
I really didn't think it was the Rom I was wondering more about the rooting its self. thanks for the reply.

Guys I didn't not mean physical damage. I meant software get corrupted some how, by the rooting process. Phone has been relocked for past two days. I have shut off phone twice in a row, tried everything I could think of to get the vol+ button not to work and it works every time. No matter how hard I push on it. No I didn't try to smash it bit still no matter what it works.
Well volume is messing up now again and its un-rooted. So its def a hardware issue. Sucks because now I have to send it it to be repaired but good because I can re-root it when I get it back lol.

@karose465 How old is the phone? If less than a year (doubtful), it should still be under warranty. Or you may be eligible for upgrade pricing: Fore example, "Customers with a Classic plan (two-year contract) are eligible for our lowest upgrade price on a new phone when at least 22 months have passed since their last phone upgrade. A new two-year contract is required to take advantage of best upgrade pricing. Of course, you can always upgrade a phone at any time, regardless of how many months have passed since your contract began."
For more info on Heimdall, just Google Heimdall Android.
Anyone with a sidekick contract ends earliest next march..

I think for him and myself, the biggest problem is being unable to get the phone to stay in download mode. For some reason, the battery won't charge and the phone itself continously turns off and on when plugged in. So the charge isn't holding, therefore nothing will stay on/open.

my Sidekick 4G is very old and just now went into bootloop... i googled the word and came across this forum.
As quoted above by previous poster that a power button repair was needed... I figured that I had nothing to lose, it being so old, I smashed the crap out of the Sidekick 4G on its power button. Lo and Behold, it booted into the system successfully.
SO... if no one has any qualms about smashing the crap out of their power button... give it a shot. It worked for me.

I don't know if my Sidekicks problem is related to this or not. I rooted it and flashed it over to Glorious Overdose v5 on May 22nd this year and it's been running great. At least it was until last Friday, Sep 13. I was having trouble connecting to the WiFi at my house so I rebooted the phone. When it started to come back up a female voice started saying, "VooDoo lagfix has been disabled." "Converting /data and /system partitions." "Conversion time estimated 10 minutes."
I let it do it's thing and that's all it's been doing all weekend. I can get into recovery mode, I've tried restoring the phone from my backup with no success. I've even tried running through the process of setting up GOv5 again and it says it's successful, but the phone never boots up. It just stays in the same blasted bootloop and saying the same things over and over again about VooDoo. I've checked the VooDoo logs and there is an error file for the 13th and the logs following say "conversion." Can someone point me in the right direction as to what I can do to get my phone working again? Everything I've tried to research so far hasn't worked.
v5 hold both volume button, the track button and power button. Should put you into recovery mode. If not, you will have to put phone into download mode. You do this by taking out battery, then pluging into computer. When you reinsert battery hold volume down and power, if I remember correctly, and your download screen should come up. From your cp manually unroot it. Then it should be fixed, and just reroot it. I hope this was helpful

Dead thread but this is your answer - Your power button is shot. Need to have a new one put on. I know your problem has been fixed / replaced but for others still searching for answers...you need a power button repair.

Hey, MythEdge. I'm not sure if you get notifications here or anything, but I registered to this site specifically to thank you; my phone ( Sidekick 4G, like OP ) bricked, and I smashed it against the table a few times ( you know, delicately... ) and it resurrected.
So thank you, sir; you were precisely correct. It worked on both of my phones, which had the exact same problem.
Just, wow. Thank you.

And almost a year later I log in and see this. Your most welcome. I haven't been working on phones for awhile but if I remember right, some models can be powered on by plugging the phone into a power source and when the phone vibrates or has a sign of life unplugging the unit. Some cables don't work and sometimes doing this via a computer can power up a device. Other than that, the other more dangerous way is to short out the pins on the bottom of the unit. I don't remember the pins but you can google a charge port diagram to help. I don't recommend doing this unless you have absolutely no other choice. Incidentally, this is why a phone will power itself on when a battery is put in and no other button is touched. The port is wet and corrosion has caused a link on the power pin and believe its pin 3. A simple cleaning with 90%+ rubbing alcohol solution will fix if cleaned quick enough.
hy all member, I have a problem with my phone..
firstly
I've rooted it using this method --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2101352
and then I instal this ROM --> http://www.romzj.com/resources/default.html?view=rom&id=13930
using twrp 2.3.3 recovery, it instaled successfully and then I reboot my phone.
it stuck at htc white logo, because it take too long time I try to torn it off by press power button for long time but it won't just nav button blinking..
I leave it till dead, in the morning I try to charge it but just orange led blinking for long time..
I've try to press power button for 2mnt or press power + vol down or both of vol button but no lock, the led just turn off but device wont turn on or vibrate..
anyone have a solution?? please... thanks
Charge it on laptop for a few hours, I remember there was a trick like this for the One X when I had a similar problem. Hold the power button and after 8-10 seconds the phone should vibrate. After a while when you plug it back, it should charge Then turn it on and try to get to fast-boot if possible... then do recovery from RUU if you cant get a rom installed from twrp....
By the way that is an x920e ROM are you sure your phone is not an x920d?

No, mine just shut off while I took an afternoon nap and this trick worked for a while eventually it couldn't detect even sdcard in CWM Recovery and TWRP. My phone had a fried mobo or corrupted custom firmware, not sure.... But that was just bad luck, because there was no RUU released at the time for my phone and after a few months I couldn't even boot it to confirm if it was hardware or not. I sold the One X to a friend as is, who got motherboard replaced for about a $100 and new imei but this was in India. Ironically the RUU was released around that time lol.
Anyhow others have done this trick and recovered this is a known problem with some One Xs', mostly happens when battery is too low.

Go to the International Model One X forum, there were a few people with similar problems I'm sure they can help as they have a bigger user base. Sometimes you have to hold the keys longer for it to turn on like 15-20 secs do this after charging for like a day or so.

When I was in India my friend went to a local store the guy changed the motherboard of the One X for about $120 instead of sending to HTC because if it's rooted and they find out they insist on replacing motherboard as it's their policy to have everything returned to default state before sending it back so even if you only have a battery problem they will charge to replace the motherboard.
I heard this on One X forums where a guy got charged for motherboard replacement because it was unlocked/rooted even though he sent to get screen replaced. Ask around if it is still true or if rules changed before you send it to HTC.

No, my friend didn't send to HTC as I said others had that experience, I think my friend's really had a motherboard/flash problem, but since bootloader unlocked warranty was void.
I hope you read the warning before you got the unlock token from HTCDev website, as soon as you accepted terms and got code I believe you voided your warranty.
Did you send your device? Because if you did they may have found out, otherwise they would replace it under warranty.
my HTC BUTTERFLY x920d is not getting switched on.. it was alright a min before ; and all of a sudden its not getting switched on .. the screen is showing no display n looks to be frozen(dead)..if I charge it there shows no light…please somebody help me in fixing the problem … thank you
