[Q] Windows Phone 7 updates query - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am from India and planning to buy Windows Phone 7 on my birthday which is very soon . But I had some update related queries which the seller could not answer.
The updates which are released by Microsoft will be also available in India, right? Will the updated be free like Android provides or will they come for a price. Can someone clarify and provide information regarding this topic.
Regards.

Microsoft will push updates to all phones either via the zune software on your pc or via the carriers, carriers are allowed to skip 1 update cycle but only one ( unlike android where carriers are under no obligation to send out updates). As far as I know updates will be free.

Thank you adesonic for the reply . Was unaware of the fact that MS has imposed such rule which for end users is great unlike Android which I entirely agree with you. As for update using zune does that mean that I can connect to WiFi and download and install updates as and when available?
Need to know about the updates are free or not.

Another Thread?

There are several other threads dealing with "guesses" about future updates. Do we really need to start another thread on this subject? I realize the other threads are getting lengthy but it would be best to post your questions there, IMO.

Hi James, I have searched the forum and found several threads related to updates but all of them focused on what features are going to be released to the user and their probable date but none seems to answer my query.
That's why started the thread. Can you please direct me to a thread which is discussing me the same content. Would appreciate that.
Btw any input on the update part ?

I am not trying to be an obstructionsit at all, just trying to give you some advice. The other "update" threads have many more posters and viewers. You stand a much better chance at getting an educated guess from one of the other threads in that there are more people involved who can advise you.

I think there is a misunderstanding between us I am 101% sure that you are not an obstructionist . Just want to help out. I am also keeping a close eye on the other threads and educate myself before I put my savings to buy my WP7.

does anyone visit this site anymore?

There doesnt seem much interest in this site anymore than there was.
I used to visit this site daily but lately there only seems to be rehashing of old posts.
Am I visiting the wrong site?? Because this doesnt seem like much of a community.
the big empty news area in the centre of the screen sorta makes it look like it.

Just you, I am here everyday. Got a couple of things I'm waiting for.
mmm, there are quite some posts very day.
Maybe the holiday-season had effects on traffic.
It must be the busiest dead site on the web, there are numerous new posts every day, there are bound to be repeat questions as new people come on line and post questions without searching the forum. Probably the reason there is no news in the box is because there is no news with regard to the device we discuss in this forum.
I'm still a frequent visitor too Not sure about admin but there are still plenty of users contributing which is what a forum is all about.
we are basically waiting for the xda3 to arrive, not much news to tell on old devices like the xda-1 and xda-2.
I am busy with other phones, unfortunately that is work done under NDA.
It's just that we don't really like you guys, so we put in a new feature to hide posts from you so you won't reply to them.
this forum is always the greatest site on the world!
Hi. I really love this site. I know that many new people try t o ask the old questions that already posted in this site, but It's okay. Some old questions up to now we haven't have a solution for it. For example, how to fix the radio stack? how to flash it in sd card to save our xda phone?
I noticed that some of us have problem with radio stack upgrade and we have been waitin for the solution.
If someone don't like this site, feel free to not login this site.
I LOVE THIS SITE!!! THANKS THE XDA DEVELOPERS TO CONTRIBUTE YOUR GREAT WORK.

[Mod Request] "New" user posting restrictions

I've been a member of xda-dev since 2006 but have made only a few posts.
I'm interested in becoming more active and contributing as a developer, but I have some pretty strict posting restrictions because I'm a "new" user. (Post timing, edit timing, no links, etc)
Would it be possible to have these restrictions removed based on that fact that I've been a member for 6 years without incident?
Thanks,
tekkdrone
i don't think time on this board has to do with anything. you've been a member for 6 years yet only have 4 counted posts, which means you probably havent contributed much[not dissing you] to have the initial restrictions lifted

I caught that too. But I'm the noob, so maybe I'm counting posts wrong. But if I have to post over 300 posts to lift my "10 post" restriction, I'll never be able to post in the non-general forums.
Yeah, I also find the restrictions a little annoying. I've been working with Android for a few years, but I never joined up here. Now that I have, I can't be seen as a developer until I've made a certain amount of posts. Not the end of the world, but still not a very good idea considering that anyone can easily get around this.
Agreed.
Yesterday, I was forced to PM a ROM developer regarding a serious issue since I wasn't able to post in the thread.

Not that I fall into this category or anything, but what is the post count to post as a developer?
This is the first forum I've been on with these kinds of restrictions. I find it odd.
The post count restriction is for those users that only join to spam the development threads with "MY CAMERA DOESN'T WORK. WHY DOESN'T IT WORK?!!?!!!!!1"
If you want the restrictions lifted, just follow a thread and join the conversation.

I can understand the frustration this might bringt to some of you - but as said in the thread above, there's no better alternative.
If you have one, bring it out.

restrictions do not make sense because I tasted such a Rom and see problems in it and I can tell the developer, who might not have noticed, but good forums are rules and should be respected

I know that feeling. Every time I got a real problem, then I found that I'm under the posts count restriction. But can't deny this is effective to prevent thread form spamming.

The restrictions make sense precisely because of that reason. The two posts you have made prior to this one are;-

Neither of those comments will be remotely useful to a developer or to a development thread.
If you were posting something along the lines of
I have recently installed your ROM v3.1 and have encountered a problem with synchronizing my calendar if I am running application 'Z'. I have rolled back to v3.0 and this problem didn't exist. I have also tried various other ICS ROMs and don't get the same problem.

and so on - problems that are well known to exist in every ICS-based ROM on our platform.
These sort of questions just cause anger and waste time - both for the devs who are trying to do a fantastic job for free and the people who actually want to join in and have the capability to help the devs with testing and troubleshooting.
I hope that you understand a bit clearer now. I, personally, don't think the 10 post limit is enough. I don't believe any XDA member should be able to post into the dev threads unless they have been approved by at least one dev - based on previous posts, helping other users and general attitude.

[Q] Is a new root method being worked on?

I've only had my S6 for a couple weeks so mine was already updated to the latest OTA version by the time I got it, and so I can't use pingpong. I don't mean to be redundant and post this question if it has already been asked but I can't find any other info at the moment in this forum, but does anybody know if anything is in the works for the current version that it would be worth holding off on the upcoming 5.1 OTA? Or is the root that you first wave guys got to use probably a one-time thing for this phone? Coming from an HTC one where I was able to unlock my bootloader I am starting to miss having root...
If a new Root is available, you will SEE it all over the forums... no need to ask.

Yeah don't bother reading the question before posting a dumb pretentious answer to it. I asked if one was being WORKED ON that was worth holding off on the OTA for, not if one was available now.
I agree.. Lots of jerks in these forums.. I check regularly to see if a root method is available BUT ALSO to see the progress if any.. Simple yes or no or say nothing .. No need to be an ass.

I'm not sure if a root method is being worked on for the current update but I can tell you that the exploit for pingpong has been patched so that is a one time thing. I think our best bet for the next method will be when 5.1 comes out.

No, everyone has given up all hope and quit.
Seriously, what kind of answer to you think you would get?
The people working on it are rarely going to talk about it until they actually have a solution unless they are working with other developers trying out possible solutions. None of it is going to be public until they have a solution to prevent the MFG or vendors from plugging up a new hole they found before they can use it.
Asking if it is being worked on is just plain dumb. This is the same cycle of every new device that has ever been released with the same questions asked all over again.
What really is the point in asking? IF and when it becomes available it will be big news splashed all over the forums not just here but other places.
Constant asking about it is actually a violation of the forum.

Asking once like I did isn't against any forum rules, trolling everything thread you participate in like you do is: it doesn't take a hard look through your posts to see that. I'm surprised your mommy and daddy let you talk like this on the internet. You don't actually contribute any knowledge or development to this site, you just act like a moron to make yourself feel better about how fat and useless you are. Stop even posting in my thread you scum

Any downsides to upgrading to nougat?

I live in Norway so it's obviously not available here yet. As the title says, are there any downsides? will i recieve updates as a uk citizen once i'm on 7.0? is it guaranteed that all my phones features will work as it should on 7.0? and lastly and most importantly, can there be a problem with mobile services?
Fairly random questions that no-one could possibly know the answer to half of them
1. Downsides to an unfinished beta? Yea, there are bugs, obviously.
2. What has being a UK citizen got to do with anything? Updates come to your phone depending on which region / ROM you have installed, not what citizenship you hold
3. How could anyone guarantee that everything will work, especially since it is not even final yet?
4. How could anyone know if there would be a problem with mobile services? We are not your provider, and it is not even released / completed / final yet
What's with the crazy questions lately?
This is what happens when you go through a dry spell.

We don't spoon feed on XDA, all info is freely available for anyone to find if they take the time to read some threads
Otherwise all we do all day is waste our time answering the same questions over and over again

TWRP for Tilapia Nexus 7 3G

Hi, Anybody on XDA.
I Have started this thread, because I cannot find an answer to my Question, posted in Nexus 7 ROM Development.
"TWRP enquiries are Not Permitted in ROM Forums or Threads".
So my simple Question is as follows.
Whom is "Original TWRP Developer" for this device.
Asus Nexus 7 (2012) Tilapia (3G) 32GB 7" Tablet, same for Grouper (WiFi) .
Limited information is available on XDA, as many Developers have lost interest or abandoned, further updates for these devices, only @AndDiSa is updating lately, in 2021, & for last 4 years, as per OP.
Latest TWRP versions 3.4.0-0 (2020) and 3.5.0-9.0 (2021) releases on TWRP.ME are Robot generated, within "Team Win Jenkins" Server with Developer, being listed as "Jenkins". Some pseudo name, that the Server created.
Original TWRP Versions from 2012-2013 being 2.8** are obsolete, next was v3.3.0-0 that works for LOS 14 ROMs, being based on Android 7.1.2 released in 2017. So ALL versions, work successfully on @AndDiSa ROMs.
So after lots of research, I cannot locate whom, was the ,"Original Human Developer", that "Team Win" had moved into "TWRP Development and Support" for later updated versions.
Now available, when released, with latest security patches, every few months, via http://TWRP.me Repositories for Multiple Devices.
There are no changes in Format, in Partitions, that can be Backed up and Restored.
So being able to communicate with a Human, instead of a Machine.
Users can ask questions, directly as PM, within XDA.
Just want to know, whom is that person, ?????
Please Reply, if anyone can answer, my Simple Question.
Thanks & Cheers BeeJ1109
HI ALL,
4 days Nothing Surely someone can answer, or acknowledge that this thread has been read.
Please respond with something, anything.
I got told to start a new thread for TWRP by some official in XDA.
Having a go at me, told to leave the OP or Dev alone, He only answers questions about ROM, Not allowed to ask questions about TWRP.
So I did as requested.
NO Responses at this Time.
Cheers

As stated in my PM: No one has any obligations to you or anyone else on this forum. You can ask a question but if no one can or even wants to answer it, that's just tough luck. You could try a different approach by proactively working out the answer on your own or rephrase the question. I personally don't believe knowing whom developed TWRP is going to help you. Finding the contributor(s) of your device here has more value. If there are none or they have discontinued support, well, that's just tough luck too I guess.

Thank you for more useless info.
For your interest, there issues with this TWRP, discussing the issues, will at least be communicating with a human.
Simple, but I suspect you are on a different page.
Contributors for this device are no help, so far. The device may have unique restraints, but I doult that. It is 32GB Device, Samsung devices with 8GB have a larger System partition. Nexus 7 has 639 MB allocated, which severely limits, loading Gapps for starters, naming a partition to unique name being staging. Therefore certain apps are looking for persist partition.
Not supporting /system/add-on.d functions limits backup and restore, requiring Magisk root and Gapps to be reinstalled everytime a new ROM is updated. Another unique feature to this device.
Maybe I am being too Technical for you to understand.
Possibly the only person that understands my concerns is @AndDiSa the ROM Dev. Whom refuses to discuss TWRP.
So maybe, I will just put the device away in the drawer, like it was for last 7 years.
No big deal, I have lots of other devices, to play with.
Telling me to rephase my question or try to investigate it myself and people are not obligated to reply, are not helpful.
You are so full of your self importance, as so-called the appointed Forum moderator, that I feel you are missing the point, I am just asking a question, and adding some info, that is relevant to the questions.
So lighten up, as it is not life or death. Relax I really don't care.
I did as you asked, got no replies, apart from your thoughts.
In my opinion, Some on XDA are helpful, others are not.
Goodbye

Hi again BeeJ1109
I will not engage in any open emotional discussion. If you wish to do so, you are free to contact me via PM. The standards that you are holding me by can just as well be reflected upon yourself. I have made great efforts in assisting you and I never made any promises. XDA is not a customer service; though it is often mistaken as one. It's about contributing and mutual respect. I was not trying to be helpful, I'm merely asking for some respect towards the community and its members.
And you are absolutely correct: some are helpful, others are not. That is not limited to XDA.
