Calculator problem - Captivate General

Every so often I need to use the calculator on my on my phone. Never noticed it til today but is it just me or can the phone not handle percentage calculations. Just try something simple like 200-10%. When I do that it gives an answer of 199.9. Anyone else have this issue?

your 4th grade math teacher would have a **** fit if she saw this thread

Calculators treat 10% as 0.10 because that produces the correct answer when you multiply it by a number. Someone could correct me if I am wrong but I think all calculators work that way. You would have to do 200*90% to get what you are after. That would be 90% of 200 (200 minus 10% of 200). Or you could do 200-(200*10%). Maybe that answers your question.

lol @storm717.
I hope that it didn't come across that a math problem like the one I listed would be something I'm trying to calculate. I was just trying to show how such an easy problem is miscalculated.
In response to fooldog01. I could definitely get the right answer from other methods, but it just strikes me as odd that it won't calculate a percentage problem the same way a $1 calculator would.

I just checked it on the Windows calculator and it handles it the way you expected it to. I guess I was wrong. I know I have seen calculators handle it the way our phones do, though.

I never would have noticed that...it certainly is weird. I wonder what Samsung coded to make it do that?

It's a scientific calculator, need to use propr syntax

This is how a calculator works:
Step 1: 200
Step 2: -
Step 3: 10
Step 4: %
Step 5: 20 (generated value @ 10% of 200)
Step 6: =
Step 7: 180 (generated value @ 200 - (10% of 200) = 200 - 10 = 180)
You got to press the "=" to show the final ans. Right after u press %, it display the percentage amount, not the final answer. It works this way on literally every calculator, even on ur computer based calculator.
Edit: Changed the 3rd screen shot since my previous screenshot showed only 1, instead of 10 for calculating percentage.

[APP] Tomorrow's Gas Price Today (Toronto-GTA Only)

Hi all,
For those familiar with TGPT (http://tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com/), I have written a small app that will check the site for updates and notify you of new prices. It also stores the prices in a DB so you can view the history.
At the moment it only works for Toronto-GTA because I live here and wrote this for me.
This is nothing fancy, it just works.
You can download it here.
Thanks.
cool, a small widget would make this even better

Originally I planned on making a widget. But then after I got the notification going I didn't think there was much point to a widget. Since I don't need it taking real estate on my screen when I already know the price from the notification. And once there is a new price, another notification will be generated.
I will try this out! Thanks!!
good stuffs! thanks!
Great start, just installed. Thanks!

This site you list is different than the one for Toronto. The Toronto site shows only a single price since almost all stations in the area are the same price. But your site shows prices for each location.
What exactly would you want to be notified of?
Damn, this kicks butt. This will serve me well when I forget to check the site before leaving work and shut down my computer. THANKS!

I think an extension for the Navigation app that show's the gas prices based on your location. It's rare, but sometimes you can find cheaper gas in different parts of a city

Might be a problem with lock 2.0? Can you try uninstall lock 2.0 and see if the screen still wakes?
Also, TGPT doesn't do anything every couple minutes. Unless you have the debug to always notify and force update every 5 seconds. Even then I don't purposely wake the screen other than creating a notification and toast.
Yeah if go to origional lock it doesnot wakeup but see tgpt running in task manager which should not the case. I check price, kill the app, it starts again in a min also i get error when restart phone for force close tgpt app
I'm using version.1 is there new version which i can download?

crimsondr, I gotta say that I've been using this app close to since you released it, and it has been working great for me being a fellow Ontarian. I did come across one MINOR issue/bug that I never have before, only because the stars (and time) aligned it as such.
I had my Desire connected to my PC in Disk Drive mode, thereby disabling access to the SD card. TGPT tried to fire a scheduled update (once every 12 hours, which is great btw), but couldn't read it's DB from the SDcard, and threw up a Force Close error.
While it's not a huge issue because you have to have your phone in Disk Drive mode when TGPT performs an update, I just think it might be better to have the .db file on the Internal Memory of the device, especially as seeing how mine is currently 4kb in size. This should get around the exception when the SD card cannot be accessed, thereby keeping TGPT from throwing FCs.
Just thought you'd like to know since it's something that doesn't happen very often, but still does cause an issue!
Thanks again for your work and effort in dev'ing this quick, informative app!

I'm not even sure I like this new version... Bits are better. The "wheel" at the top should function as one (spin to change from apps to games for example), and it would do well to be smaller.
It's not all good news though..... Not only are Google bringing in this revised App but they are also changing the returns policy on 'Paid Apps'.
At the moment it is 24hrs but very soon this will automatically change to 15mins..... Yes, FIFTEEN MINUTES!

I can understand that for many it will not be an issue but for me it does suffer an impact.
A lot of my paid software has to be tested with other Apps and other people.
There is no way I can achieve this within 15 minutes nor would I wish to challenge one of my medical team to stop what he/she is doing just so as I can ensure the new App is tested within the new time lines.
Run of the mill games and non business applications should be fine but larger business orientated applications will I feel suffer.
They may end up having to take other measures to ensure sales targets are met.

I'm not totally convinced of that - most apps are pretty cheap (even the business ones) and I think a business can afford to drop £20 or so on a copy of an app for testing purposes, whereas perhaps a "casual" user might not.
For example, if I'm looking at rolling out Android phones to lots of users, and I want to check out 3rd party exchange integration solutions, it's going to cost me less than £20 to get full copies of both Touchdown and RoadSync.
YMMV of course!
I suspect we'll start seeing more free trial/time limited versions of software popping up.

Dave

They will suffer if they don't introduce what you are saying (which I totally agree upon).
Under this new time limit there's effectively four problems:-
1. Large Content Application Downloads
Apps that have significant amounts of downloadable data i.e. Maps, Game data files etc can depending on your speed take ages to download. As such there is no realistic way you can download all the data and test it within 15mins.
2. Time & Location Apps
Some Apps rely upon a time of day or location (alarm clocks, location based sound profiles etc). 15mins isn't enough time to evaluate these Apps.
3. Utility Apps
Apps such as over-clocking, battery resource monitors, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth location-based togglers etc. How do you manage to test these within 15mins.
4. Buyers Confidence
If you have an entire day to download and try an app, you're less likely to feel rushed to test, or pressured into keeping the app. By offering an entire day to "try-before-you-commit-to-buy" Google and the developer community are conveying a sense of confidence that the apps found in the Android Market are of such high quality that you'll like them -- after all, if you don't like them they'll give you your money back! That's a pretty confident sentiment, and it sets potential buyers at ease.
By rolling that back to just a quarter-hour, Google is essentially reversing that sentiment, making users less likely to make the purchase in the first place. Do the math: 15 minutes is a reduction in time of 98.9583%.
As a short-term measure I would like to see Google change the time-limit to say 2 to 4hrs.
Long term I agree I hope we now get to see more Apps being offered with a trial bases, i.e. you can test an App for seven uses, after this time if you wish to keep and use you pay for it.

1. yup, games with large downloads after installing will be an issue. An hout would be better. 24 hours effectively allowed you to complete a game so that was too much.
2. yeah but they generally have lite versions.
3. agreed.
4. Yeah, but 24 hours was way too much. 15 probably too little (although like GANJDROID I *generally* refund within 5 mins)
15 mins is better than nothing right? If the market started with 15 mins we would be happy. Fact is we were probably a bit spoilt by having a whole day.
On a positive note, I think that google wouldn't have done with without significant pressure, and I'd assume from large game companies. So, we might expect an influx of mega-high quality games as a result, something I'm (just about) willing to give up 23 hours and 45 minutes for!

Yeah even the touch button doesn't work. I can't install it (no sideloading with ATT, and I haven't done anything to fix that) So I just copied it in with root explorer.

Compass always out of whack, just my phone?

I always have to wave my phone around with at least every boot like an idiot to calibrate the compass. My G2x I only had to calibrate once ever and it remained calibrated. With my Sensation it just seems the compass is always not calibrated properly and waving my phone around in figure 8s all the time is embarrassing.

I also have to re-calibrate. I find the 3-axis rotation method works well, and is maybe slightly less foolish looking in public than a big figure-8.

You rotate the phone smoothly around each of the 3 axes. Just found this video. The first part shows the 3 rotation orientations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECaINlTMNk0
I do it somewhat faster than he does, and without the Canadian accent.
Some documentation I read said 3 rotations along each axis, but based on that video it may not require that many. Trial and error should determine what works best on your phone.
Edit: Just found this video as well. Can't vouch for how well his technique works, but it's quite a bit simpler and quicker. I'll give it a shot next time I need to calibrate:

I had the same issue; googling around brought me to: http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/79713-compass-calibration-problem.html#post997382.
Did "temp" root, and followed the instructions - the name of the calibration data file on our phones is "AK8975Prms.ini".
The compass seems to be working properly now, for about a week, at least; but I readily admit: it is uncertain if deleting the mentioned file had anything to do with it, or it was just coincidental.

Is this still working for you or has anybody come up with another fix? It's extremely irritating to be using navigation and have it tell you to turn left, then as you're waiting at the light it says continue straight, make a u-turn, turn right, etc, all while not even moving...

My Spen "Reset" App

I hope this is the right place to post this. I have owned and really loved my N7000 for several months now. As an ex-Palm user, the SPen stylus was a huge draw. I began to note, however, that over time the accuracy and the location of the floating pointer of my SPen began to drift. I searched and found many people complaining about this and saw multiple posts of "fixes" to try. I even found a paid app in the marketplace that claims to deal with this. I recalled that on my various Palm devices I occasionally had to re-run the touchscreen calibration routine and began to look for one of these thinking it should be built-in. But I could not find one that actually seemed to help.
After more digging I discovered a technique that seemed to work. Simply changing the SPen's dominant hand setting back and forth from my setting of Left to Right and back to Left again made a big difference. But doing so was inconvenient and really had to be done with some regularity to keep things really perfect. After more searching, I discovered how changing the SPen device's dominant hand (not the actual preference setting but seemingly communicating directly with the device) could be triggered by a script. However, this requires ROOT and some way to launch the script. I tired this and found it worked well.
So I decided to wrap this technique up in a little app - my first real Android app. It also requires ROOT and uses much the same technique as the script. You simply tap the app's icon and the quick change is performed - there is no UI. The app determines your current dominant hand setting from the preference file and then tells the device to switch to the opposite hand and back again. Nothing too big here but it seems to work for me (as well as some others who posted this "fix" idea).
I would think it good for this to be scheduled to run regularly (maybe once every .5 - 1 hour) so one never has to be bothered. But for now I haven't figured out how to do this and my guess is there are free apps available that can run this on a schedule. I was able to find such a program to run the script in this manner.
But I have not tested this on any but my own N7000. Will it work for others? Will it work on US carrier's versions of the Note? Will it work on the Note II or the new tablet that has an SPen? I am not sure and am hoping others out there will try this and let me know their findings and suggestions.
Thanks
EDIT: Please note that I have moved the APK file to the Google Play Store. Here is the link.

For those that have it, Tasker should allow one to schedule this activity as needed. For those that don't, I recommend looking into it.

Also, I can no report that I have this running on a schedule using the Scheduling function of the excellent SManager app from the marketplace. I have been using that to run the onandroid script automatically to perform nightly backups. It can run executable programs as well as scripts. To run the .apk you use the android activity manager program (/system/bin/am) using the following command line:
/system/bin/am start -n com.whitedavidp.reset.spen/.MainActivity
Cool!

Thanks, I will look into that. I am so new to this I kept things as simple as possible. A service would seem the right way to handle built-in scheduling. But I would also want to retain the tapping of the app icon so it can be run on command in case the user has set the interval too large and wants to reset things right now.
thats a nice one

Feedback on GB or Jelly Bean?
I should have mentioned in my original post that I have tested this only on Stock Touchwiz ICS 4.0.4 using Hydracore 4.3 kernel. It would be helpful to know if this works and does its job well on other platforms. Lacking adequate hardware, I can think of no way to ascertain this except asking others to try and give me feedback. Other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Thank you for this app! I'm using an SGH-T889 Note II and the app worked perfectly. It could just be my imagination, but it really seems like my stylus is way more accurate, so I'm assuming it worked! Ok that's cool I'm glad I could help (even though it's miniscule lol). I can also say now that it's not just my imagination, because it actually does work. This morning I had some time to kill before a meeting so I was doodling it up. After a while I noticed the S Pen accuracy was really starting to slip, so I ran your app again and the difference was amazing! I'm really surprised that Samsung didn't intergrate an app like this, because you'd figure they'd recognize the precision drops over time by now. Anyway I'm definitely glad I found this man and once again I really appreciate your hard work!

Thanks again for the feedback. I guess I will post this thing on the Play store so others may find it more easily. Maybe I will follow-up with a "Pro" version that permits periodic, scheduled running of the app and allows for the notifications to be turned off. Cheers!

hi
this app is a great idea! please update it with schechule... but i still have problems with landscape mode... there it's always off...
a fix for this would be soooo nice!
thx for youre work!
App runs on paranoid Android.
Not sure about tw roms but on cm/pa and aokp roms pointer icon is always slightly towards top left of screen. If phone is rotated, rather than point to the 'new' top left it is still pointing at the volume up button.
To fix landscape we need someone to work out how to convince the input that the screen is 1280 x 800 instead of 800 x 1280, this (I think) means the spen input would need to recalibrate every time your screen rotates eating batteries for breakfast.
Right handed use landscape where bottom of phone moves right (anticlockwise) you can still see it its just off. If you swing bottom of phone left pointer hides behind spen

Thanks for the info and response. Can you please describe: (a) does my app help when in portrait mode? and (b) can you describe how the pointer is off when you are in landscape (which direction and by how much)? and (c) when you return to portrait mode does the pointer seem right?
I have a more complete version offering scheduling and other convenience features coming and will put both on the marketplace once I figure out how to do that.
PS - I think I read somewhere that toggling auto-rotate on/off may help "fix" the S-Pen and I wonder if this will work for you?
Cheers!

Thanks for your info. Good to know that the app doesn't crash on Paranoid. My phone is TW ICS 4.0.4 with Hydracore 4.3 kernel. On my phone I do not see the issue with landscape mode that you and phasA describe. I can say that I really wasn't liking the way auto-rotate was working on my phone (sometimes just too sensitive). So I have installed this app which basically makes me confirm that I want to rotate. Perhaps this has something to do with my I am not seeing this issue?
I still didnt get the use of this app, sorry i am not at all rude but how can changing dominant hands reset the pointer settings. I mean what does it has to do with resetting the pen settings???

DroidBTC Miner - Bitcoin miner for Android

This is a Bitcoin miner for Android, based on Simran Singh's AndLTC Miner and pooler's CPUMiner.
Mod edit: Links removed.
I've tried it on my gNex and on the nexus 7 and gets around 550k hashes per second per core, it's a nice number.
But... I find the phone / tablet gets too hot in a short time and I stopped as thought it's not a good idea to use this kind of devices for massive calculations.
Anyway, I think you did a great job, regards

nice work man. it's nice to see that people are still working on this.
384kh/s per core on SGS3
Is a smartphone powerful enough to mine bitcoins? You can't contribute much with ~600khps.
LTCMiner for android on Github and GPL

Still kind of new to this, how do i configure this to run on my pool? Since obviously you have done this a few times can you suggest a good pool to get into that would be supported by this app? My tablet seems to be getting around 700kh/s per core with 4 cores, seems respectable (transformer prime) and most of the time my tablet is sitting there unused anyways, might as well put it to work.

Could try keeping it on a cooling pad while you run this.
700 khash/s = 0.01 USD lol
So 4 cents a day. At current market value. On an android device thats just sitting there collecting dust anyways. And chances are, over time, the value of the currency will continue to rise. Why not try?
my problem is getting it to connect to my account on bitminter...

im actually a really noob app developer, so i'll figure it out. until then, it will have to remain this way.
Hey so I am pretty noob to the BTC scene and want to turn an old phone I have lying around into a mini miner rig. I downloaded the app and made a wallet but have no idea how to get it to connect to a pooling service that deposits those coins into my actual wallet. There is no field to enter miner passwords and such within the app it appears.

Okay nvrmind I figured out you need to add the usr and pass for the worker that you set up on the pool website. I have done that. Next question, I keep getting messages that say "long pooling activated on url: Port" (8305 for example) Do I need to consistently change that URL in the app to get the bitcoin?

Despite the fact that this is a unprofitable app, it works very well
600khash/s with a tf101
Running 2 threads at 600 khash/s each, so I take it thats actually 1.2Mhash/s?

getting about 1.3m/hash on my at&t htc one x and double that on my tf300t using neon minert and all cores. i just wish i could throttle the process a bit so i dont melt a hole through my desk. also to be able to save my username and password would be swell.

maybe try mining with less than all your cores, or scale your CPU freq down
new build up.
Added persistent credential storage and fixed multitasking.
