Looking for other user's experiences with the 2.2 roms. I understand that the official 2.2 update is looking grim and there are some apps that I want to download that are 2.2 only.
Stability and non OC and UV would be ideal. Any suggestions?
Rom: Serendipity
Kernel: Speedmod
Modem: JK4
Only thing is if you flash serendipity you will have to flash speedmod seperately cause it comes with an oc/uv kernel bundled in. That is the combo I run and its very stable...
Stable, great data speeds, incredible GPS, lightweight stock-like froyo 2.2 setup (copied from my current signature)

Give it a shot, and make sure to post in DG's threads about what a badass he is

A little uneasy about flashing a kernel. I want to make an easy transition to the new 2.2 when it comes out.
Dorian's UGJK3 FroYo - Gingerbread Edition
Dorian's XXJPY 2.2.1
I haven't used the above ROMs but they seem pretty successful/stable from the posts in the threads I linked above.
You can always odin one-click back to stock if needed when an official (non-rogers) froyo is released. If you're thinking of flashing a rom there is really no reason to be uneasy about flashing a kernel because all roms flash a kernel and modem. Everyone likes different roms and kernels and modems and have different ones that work better, so I would suggest looking at what rom you think would give you what you are looking for, comparing kernels, and modems. Remember to read the modem thread over in development about kernel/modem combinations too.
Andromedia
flashed over darky's 8.1 (ported to captivate) and is really fast!

You could use SGS kernel flasher. That's what I used because I felt the same way.

Serendipity.
There are a lot of good choices available right now I am currently running Pheonix 3.5 and its where it should be as far as development. Any of the JPY 2.2.1 roms should be good to go as many of the bugs on all of them have been worked out. the new roms coming out as of right now are based on the Armani captivate and the bell captivate. These are still being tweaked out for maximum performance and will eventually be the best choice for our phones, but in the mean time I would choose between Pheonix 3.5, perception build 10.2 or cognition 2.3b7 a little step backwards, but very stable. These are great places to get you feet wet before you get the bug to flash the latest and greatest XDA has to offer.
If and when ATT finally decides to release an official froyo the best chioces for an operating system will still be found right here, and you'll be glad you learned to get the most out of your phone.

I'm running the same thing (version 2.0), but with the JL2 modem. I even have the circle batter mod, and there are no issues.
Good combo
storm717 is definitely on to something!
I have mod-ed three Captivates to this three part combo...(my own, then two coworker/friends) we have all had nothing but good experience with this combination. A faster, better Captivate is waiting for you too...definitely use "Rom Manager" makes it much safer and easier.

Watch out when using a Captivate ROM (such as Cognition) with i9000 kernel/modem (such as Firebird 2) as it will cause bluetooth voice to not work (so much static it will be unusable).
If you use a i9000 ROM it will not make use of the hardware noise cancellation (audience chip) in the Captivate, so people you call may have a hard time hearing you if there is background noise.

Hi,
I am about to flash my Captivate and looking for a stable roms. any recommendations?
do we have any Gingerbread based roms?
thanks
Perception P8 non-oc/uv version is very stable and works flawlessly for more then a week with very good battery life plus good GPS lock time (20 secs max), HSDPA, very snappy and no problem what so ever. After installation and reboot, Had to rename Swype keyboard app(can download from Perception Thread) to Update.zip and install using Rom manager. Hope this helps.
I suggest the newest i9000 jpx rom that came out over the weekend, its so quick it doesn't even need a lagfix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880859
The most stable ROM that I have found is Cognition 2.3b6. PM me if you cannot find a link. Running it since it came out - no issues whatsoever. If you are looking for stable, stay away from oc/uv ROMs because by definition they are not. Want something even more stable, get Cog 2.1.7 - its Eclair, but rock solid.

I beg to differ. Axura offers the ability to OC/UV but only if the user decides to. I will never preset any OC/UV prior to release. I utilize SetiroN's 1.4.7 which is able to OC to 1200Mhz. I have never had any problems and the users seem pretty happy too.

+1 on this - I didn't even realize the lagfix wasn't applied when I first loaded it With Voodoo applied, it is beautiful.

+1 on this as well - Axura is a great ROM (non biased opinion )
If you want a clean vanilla rom that's stable I'd definitely recommend Assonance. I've tried them all and assonance is by far the most stable bug free rom

Sorry, I should have made that more clear. I meant that using those features of those ROMs will add instability, not that the ROMs/kernels themselves were unstable even if the OC/UV feature was not used.
Hey, just curious what everyone's favorite ROM's are, and what the performance levels are between the ones you have tested. I used to use Darkyy's with Speedmod and Glitterballs, and now I'm on Phoenix 4.5 with Suckerpunch Kernel. There are weird UI glitches in Phoenix and issues with the Kernel as well, but the performance is awesome when it works correctly. I'm also interested in a change of flavor from the green/black of Phoenix, but I'd rather change to a new ROM than a new theme.
So I am just looking for opinions and intelligent discussion on what your favorite ROM & Kernel setup is, and why, with a focus on performance in mind.
Thanks guys.

Cognition 3.04 with SuckerPunch release 49. It's a dream phone. Overclocked and UVd with great battery life and no sleep death so far.

I've used Cog 3.04 up until yesterday when I flashed Precision 3.0 along with SuckerPunch #49 kernel. Very smooth and even faster than when I was on Cog, though I did only use the stock kernel with that ROM. I am loving the minimalistic theme as well. I haven't had any problems and the battery life even seems a bit better then what I experienced with Cog.

I'm tired of reading 60+ pages on each kernel and rom thread. What combo of rom and kernel seems to be the best? I know everyone is different but looking for the majority..
I using whats in my sig and couldn't be happier. Great performance and decent battery life.

It really depends on what kind of performance (battery life, speed, etc.) you're after, versus what user experience you're after (heavy theming capability, Samsung's default TouchWiz interface versus something more AOSP-based).
I personally use the Mesmerize port of MIUI with the FROIS 2 theme. Because that's AOSP-based, it's REALLY fast, and I don't even think I've had my Voodoo lagfix enabled for a while. It scans my SD card in seconds, whereas on a TouchWiz rom it takes close to a minute.
On the other hand, there are things broken with the AOSP ROMs. If you're the kind of phone user who can live without those things, AOSP-based ROMs can be VERY fast, and VERY pretty.
TouchWiz tend not to be as fast on the whole (YMMV), but they should pretty be rock-solid stable, and still over some fun customizations and themes.
without specific examples, does that at least give you a better idea of which ROM you should check out?
I am really looking for stability and battery life. With the company email always polling and working in a building that has a worse signal than an underground bunker my battery dies in under 8 hours. Right now I am rooted with a stock EC10 voodoo kernel. My big problem now is after being in an area that I lost signal, none of my texts went through. I could get them but not send. A reboot fixed it but dont want it to happen again.
I have been looking at the OTB kernel and JT's voodoo. For a ROM I have been looking at PnP but with the recent issues I have been waiting for the update. The H57 rom seems promising though.
Heinz is good.
For ROMs and burgers. Seriously though it is a great ROM. I couldn't go back to stock and be happy after having this.

Now the 5/7 version of H57 has the kernel included with the zip? So, wipe the phone and install zip from sd and should be good? If so, is it a voodoo kernel? I looked through all 25 pages and didnt see if it was.

Sweet.. Got it Dl'd and going to flash soon.
Well got it flashed and seems to be working awesome. Only problems i have found is that the camera will freeze up and have to reboot. Changed the scheduler to CFQ and havent tried again. The first thing I noticed that I dont like is that the silent button on the pull down is not there. It has mobile data. I use the silent alot at work and wish it was still there.
I'm not sure about other roms, but with Heinz 57, there are a handful of lockscreen styles that have the ability to silence the phone (turn on/off silence mode). For example I know the Rotary and AOSP unlock screens allow this.
It took a little getting used to, but I'm liking not having to unlock my phone to silence it.
i was using PER and moved to CM7 right now, going to check MIUI also but i got used to Samsung roms so i'm looking for a recommendation on a GB Samsung based rom

MIUI is very nice and very different. I like it, but if you are sticking to a Samsung ROM - try Continuum. It has TW4 and is very smooth.

Continuum 5.4.1 has TW4. In the latest release (5.5) he went back to TW3 for performance. I thought 5.4.1 w/ TW4 was pretty speedy - definitely liked it better than TW3.
how is the battery life in Continuum?
Im loving Phoenix Mosaic right now, been running it since the first release .. but honestly the only way to find you own personal preferance is to try a bunch of ROMS yourself.
GR-12, enough said!
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
Contiuum 5.5.... Great battery life and buttery smooth. Havent had one problem with it yet, including the ever nasty charging bug.(least not as bad as some other ROMs that Ive tried).
On average I can get 20+ hours on medium..... 15-17 hrs on heavy use. bout 50 texts, 30 minutes of phone calls and lots of air time on xda forums(not using wifi) and playing games.
i tried all the GB roms best battery life i found was on the new darkys rom. I am an power user so battery life matters, I flashed it with nothing and deleted the rest of the useless apps i got like 10 apps i use and like. but i do like to surf the web.
for looks i liked simply galaxy 2 and purple Licious both were butter.
and for the best speed it is Continuum its battery life isnt as good as a few others.
any of the JVK or JVO are very stable and good daily drivers.
JVB based roms have a few bugs nothing to stop daily use.
All are very good hard to make a stand out best it all depends on you taste and needs.
good luck I like all the samsung roms far better then CM7 battery life seems much better on the samsung roms.
Ive flashed to cm7, di11,and many others. For me serendipity takes the cake.

im pretty sure you have to flash to stock first then load GB bootloaders since MIUI and CM use different bootloaders.
EDIT: sorry for double posting link, didnt see it above from jbo12
I installed the Infused 1.5.3 ROM on my Samsung Infuse 4G.
I've been looking around at the kernels, and I was just wondering if the one that goes with Infused 1.5.3 is fine as-is or if there's a more stable one that also provides better battery life and speed.
Stay with what I've got, or go with a different one?
Most people are happy with the kernel thats included in the phone already but custom kernels provide much more options as far as battery life, over/underclocking, over/undervolting, the way the cpu treats the voltages. It is all in preference.

Thanks for the information, but I understand this much.
I'm more looking for the most stable custom Kernel for my model of phone, and if they even do much better than stock. (If it's worth even flashing.)

Mostly all custom kernels are worth flashing. The hardest part is choosing so people usually flash 1 for a couple days to test out and flash another for the next couple of days and so on.

I'll look into it, but will Kernel flashing delete my data like ROM flashing did? I know it was from choosing the delete cache and data setting before I flashed, but do I have to do that this time? (Or is Kernel flashing super different?)

Thank god. Though it's not much trouble reinstalling apps so much as it is doing the entire setup process from scratch.
Right now there isn't much difference between the kernels out there except for gtg's Community Voodoo and Infusion OC/UV - over the past few weeks, most of the kernel devs have been cross-applying each other's patches.
GTG's kernel - Minimal changes, gtg has been focusing on ROMs/Gingerbread, handing off kernel work to others
Defuse kernel - This is one of the most mature kernels out there, LinuxBozo is a kickass kernel dev. It was the first one to have reasonably working BLN.
Infusion - Infusion carries about half of the enhancements present in Defuse in its current release and adds overclocking/undervolting. The next Infusion release (which is a bit overdue - bedwa had a crazy week) will contain everything present in Defuse except possibly for BLN, plus it has overclocking/undervolting.
None of the kernels really do anything to touch power management except for the Infusion undervolting code, so you shouldn't see any significant differences in battery life unless you run Infusion and undervolt.
