I read the Captivate versus Nexus threads before posting here but most are quite old.
I'm anxiously looking for my first Android device. I need to keep cost down so I am looking for a used Samsung Captivate or used Samsung Nexus S 9020A for use on AT&T/Rogers. Used Captivate is around $100 less than used Nexus S. I know about 9020 versus 9023 and "A" versus "T". I might pay the extra money if it is worth it in the long run.
I understand the basic hardware differences between the two: external memory, external flash, NFC, Google updates. I will definitely root a Captivate, and may do so on in time with the Nexus S.
What I don't have is a good grasp of is reliability comparison. I've heard many Captivates have a GPS issue, which isn't my top priority now, but may become more important over time. Captivates floating around the used market could be quite old (1st gen).
I tend to keep my phones for a long time.
Which should I get?
Thanks in advance!
I would say Nexus S. It's free at some places with contract. I know the internal memory only seems like a bad thing but it's not really (I initially thought it was). I have a Photon and it also has an internal partition. I have my SD installed but don't even have anything on it. Everything is on internal and still have lots of room to add more "stuff". The nexus is easier to play with and of course early updates. On the other hand if you'd rather have more of a challenge rooting and playing around with your phone a capacitive could be entertaining as well.
Good luck!
I know that you guys probably see dozens of these kinds of threads from confused geeks like me who just can't make up their minds, but I'm really stuck here. I've been up for hours reading about all of the handsets on the market right now and I just can't settle on one option that I like the best for my situation. I'm hoping that some of the more experienced users can help me out on this.
For context, I've been using an HTC Desire for the past two years no problem. I love the phone, but it is showing it's age and the internal memory is an issue. So I would like to get a new one, that can last me at the very least two more years. My budget is around 600 dollars.
I live in Canada, so the situation with carriers is pretty bad. I'm currently on Telus (HSPA+) and would prefer to own my phone so that I can bypass this whole contract crap and negotiate better prices for my monthly bills.
Anyways, boiled down, this is what I'm looking for:
Compatible with Telus HSPA+ Network (Rogers is a plus)
Either a MicroSD slot or 32+ onboard storage
At least 24 hours of battery life on a single charge
Decent performance, don't really play games but would like a lag free interface
Healthy hacking community
Good build quality and durability. It should be able to take a fall
Flash camera. Camera quality is a negligible factor but I use the flashlight every day.
Out of all of the devices I've seen thus far, I'm leaning most towards the OneX+. But I've also looked at the Galaxy Nexus and liked it as well. There is also the SGS3 but I think that phone is really ugly and don't really like it. Choices... choices... can I hear a voice of reason here?
What do you think about a Motorola Atrix 4G. It have a dual-core CPU (1Ghz), 16Go of internal memory + MicroSD slot up to 32Go. HSPA+ compatible, a great assembly quality with Kevlar. A high-capacity battery (more than one day of autonomy). A good healthed developers community.
I think it's the best phone for your requirements. It's not the all brand new smartphone, but you'll keep it for a longtime if you take care of it

PS: I forgot to say it have two very powerful LEDs flash (more powerful than Galaxy S2 flash)
Sorry for my bad english

I hadn't though of that one actually. From the looks of it, everything that I want is there. However, from the development pages, it looks like Motorola is being quite active in suppressing the hacking community, especially by not providing them graphics drivers which leads to numerous bugs in ICS and JB. That might be a deal breaker for me unless an Atrix4G owner can weigh in and clear my suspicions.
Note 2 if that isn't too big for u! Idk y u don't like s3 but 20million + people who bought it can't go wrong! and u oughtta sacrifice somethin to gain somethin! Just sayin. Ur wish! And BTW one x + is great. Isn't nexus4 there? Cuz nexus is already too old!
Ps - and don't ever think of buying moto. I myself own an atrix2. They r too unresponsive / ignorant about their customers. Worst OEM ever. And they have everything locked down (bootloader), so not really much of development!

The Note2 is far to big for my tiny hands, haha. The reason I don't like the S3 is because of the garish chamfered edges and the design that basically screams "no we aren't copying apple" while not offering any real inspired design. It's just too unrelentingly samsung. While Moto might be the worst OEM, I think samsung is pretty close.
Nexus 4 is out of the question because of it's pathetic amount of internal storage and no MicroSD slot. Also it is basically a glass enclosed phone so it won't have the durability of something like the one x+.
Honestly, I think I am going to go with the One X+ because it seems that it has the best internal battery, great specs, though I will probably hobble it a bit for extra battery life with a more efficient kernel. Also it seems that it could survive re-entry into the atmosphere with that fused ceramic/metal enclosure.
Then again... I might just go with the S3. I mean it is butt ugly but it has everything that I want in a phone. MicroSD, removable battery, nice screen, hacking community... damn. It's really not making it easy on my that the phone costs 150 dollars less than the OneX+. Plus the button is on the side as opposed to the top, which is nice.

man all this screams SGS3 and your better off getting it. everyone has said how much they love it. I would avoid htc though, theyve been changing for the worse...
So 18 months after i bought my note 3 it just died , doesn't Charge , doesn't power on nothing . So a INR 47000 ($750) Flagship phone doesn't even last 2 years , I'm simply amazed by this **** . Getting it fixed will obviously cost a lot around 11k INR ( $170) which I'm in no mood to spend after paying a hell lot . Why cant they make phone which can last a few years , My nokia E71 lasted 5 years without a hiccup , my htc still runs after 4 years , Never gonna suggest Samsung products again after being a big fan of them from so long , Share your sudden death syndrome experiences and how did you people deal with it?
Sounds like the port is broken and is probably the reason why it's not charging. Replacing the port shouldn't be difficult, look for Note 3 teardown on YouTube.
You find spare parts on eBay or similar.

nope its the dead mainboard tried it with different batteries and got it checked
Damn that sucks
Really sad that yours died, but ONE single case doesn't mean anything and it never will. I personally have no intention to use a phone for more than one year, but I have seen so many phones of my friends and relatives and colleagues, which are lasting for over three years now, and not only lasting, with a new battery those phones are as good as new! And yes, before you ask, those are all Samsung, Note 1, S3 mostly.
In any case, try a different brand indeed, see if that suits your luck, LG probably is a good option. Heard their devices are really really durable, and long lasting :|

Agree. It seems a case of bad luck.
During the last four years I recommended Samsung phones to family and friends and was responsible for a few dozen phones sold by Samsung (should have gotten at least one for free from them).
I personally own three Notes 3, one Note 1, one S2 and one S3, all running fine even after being handled by my young kids (2 and 4 years old) and a after few ugly drops.
What I always say about electronic equipment is "To have a failure all you need is a working device". It may happen to anyone at anytime with no apparent reason.

Actually sudden death syndrome is pretty common, but if it happens during warranty it's a no issue, the problem is once warranty has ended. This was a huge problem with note 2 surprised to see it made it to note 3 too. And I've to use phones for atleast 2-3 years since we pay a lot upfront while buying them

Hmm. The same person replied to that topic with different usernames, and that's it! If this were a known problem it would have been pointed out by the XDA people already! A few batches of phones might have the problem anyway, that still can no way generalise things.
by chance did you use a overclocked kernel?......., hey theyre great but they do raise the SOC temps quite significantly depending on usage.
I prefer to stay within reason and choose optimized kernels and roms(linaro compiled) over overheating kernels such as lean kernel.(2.7 Ghz)
arter97's for example is strict with staying at or below the official max frequencies. I dont spend my time either plugging and unplugging theusb 3.0 port especially since I own a Myde backup battery.

i never overclocked and usually used it with power saver mode which maxed out the speed at 1.4 GHZ and had also undervolted sightly , it was running perfectly well untll this moment . I never overclocked actually , exynos are notoriously unstable when overclocked at-least with this phone
I completely agree that you can't blame an entire product line for something just because it happens to you once. I know A LOT of people with Samsung devices (that including the S3, Note 2, and Note 3) and I've personally never heard of or seen this happen. I have two Note 3's right now and they have been put through the paces really hard from no telling how many ROM flashes, and I haven't had this issue. Nobody has said anything about it that's running either one of our ROM's, and there is no telling how many people are actually running DomPop on their Note 3 now.
I think you just got really unlucky and ended up with a bad seed from the bunch. That sucks and I hope you get it straightened out soon.
ATM I technically could upgrade to note 4 however visiting their threads it seem calibrating either MYDE or Zerolemon batteries is a pain in the butt. Has to do something with a battery gauge and the note 4 isnt very good at dealing with this, also the rom scene isnt as good as note 3's. They do not have the mighty "arter97" backing them up yet.
I think it's safe to say I'm gonna skip the note 4 and wait for the note 5, but I definetly will not buy any device containing the "snapdragon 810", It's a flop on epic proportions

S3 and Note 2 were plagued by SDS or Sudden Death Syndrome. I have seen a few of them, die for no reason. There was an app in the app store to check if your unit was affected.
Best way to sell phones once it's out of warranty and buy new one

Me. So far. 128gb/8g burgundy. Find it runs normally. Smooth, battery seems OK.
Famous last words
It speaks volumes about the S22 Exynos devices that there is a thread with the title, "Exynos users without problems?".
it's common , problems to be heard first ... but let's see how many users don't...
GSMArena released their review of the S22+, they said Exynos performs great but its inconsistent and they assume its software. Looking at everyone's phone they are on January patch, so I would hope there is a big one coming this week.

It will work out fine you'll see.. I'm waiting for mine on Saturday and I know I'll be facing some stuff when I starting it
Had mine 24 hours and it's brilliant, no lag, great battery life already (40% = 4 SOT) and still learning, S-Pen is very responsive, not felt any heat of the device even playing Mario Kart DS in an emulator it was chill.
I know people want Samsung to fail, it seems they spend a lot of time in Samsung forums searching for issues to highlight but XDA has become toxic. 50% of the people posting in S21U and S22U don't have the phone and just waste time hating on it and posting issues they found online about it with zero experience of it. This is not the XDA I used to spend time in talking about ROMs, modding phones or just ways to get more out of your phone. Now all I see is why that phone of this chipset is crap, how bad battery is, how manufacturers will rue the day they dropped SD Cards, and unlocking breaking the warranty is bad. I'm done with the toxicity, enjoy you trolls and I hope you all one day find your phone so that you too can be positive rather than tearing other peoples choices down.
I am going to request my account be deleted and enjoy the phone I chose.

or people constantly nagging on how the SPEN is on the "wrong" side lol. I feel this post because I remember joining this forum way back with really old devices just for the fun of rooting. it has now become a place for trolls, haters, marketing experts, etc. Would be sad to see someone from the old school leave.
To clarify this post reason is to understand what is really going on. I have been waiting for the phone day after day and I have definitely been influenced by what I read here. But I really believe that after the first upgrade everything will be adjusted...
I use it for 2 days. No problem yet. My biggest fear was recording the calls. But call recording works perfectly. Battery average, but I believe it will improve.

Having issues setting up Samsung pay+, I try to add my natwest card to it as my first card but it says its already added. I can't add natwest card to normal Samsung pay because natwest doesn't support it
Got my S22U/Exy/512gb on thursday, feels a bit sluggish in some applications, like in the early days of counterstrike, when you accidentally had software rendering activated instead of 3dfx/opengl/direct3d .... some of you might know what I mean here
some further bugs:
the screen turns completely black if I scroll up or down a website, that might not have been completely loaded or has some gifs or embededded videos in them. If you scroll fast, you might have turned the screen off so that you have to turn the device back on with a button or double-tap on the screen (even this might not work then) , if you scroll slower and the screen turns black, it might come back to normal if you stop the scrolling.
very strange behaviour, hope(and pretty sure ) samsung does update very soon.....
if not... i'm all in for a root and custom rom
Mine is laggy and my s-pen keeps jamming too!
Absolutely fine so far. I have the 512 GB one. The battery seems to be going a little bit faster than the S21 Ultra, but nothing too bad

Hi. I will get mine in a few hours What are you using for call recording? Built-in or an app?
Given that only a few users report this and the lines remind me of bad VRAM overclocks on desktop GPUs, I assume it has something to do with silicon lottery and that some RDNA chips are pushed too far. I think Samsung will release an update either bumping the voltage (probably not) or reduce its clocks slightly to fix it.
It is quite likely that it is hardware related since with software there should be more devices being affected at least in a particular use case. But nothing software wouldn't be able to fix. Please note that this only an assumption (!)
Let me preface this with, I know having only 2/3 of the max ram you could potentially have on the Ultra 22 would be noticeable in performance, but i had no idea it would be that dramatic and debilitating.
I purchased the 128 because all they had available at my stores were this one and the 512, thinking i could save a few hundred dollars and still be upgrading, this was a complete downgrade. As always i load phone with no accounts to upgrade it, then factory reset it to start fresh.
First Red Flag, even while booting up for the first time, the phone got very very hot and slowed down to a crawl. This was something i had never experienced with the years of samsung phones ive purchased.
Opening just as much as 3 applications would cause stuttering to a point where it would be 2 second before a touch is registered.
Memory allocation was so bad that even with 3 applications open, if i returned to the first application it would refresh. Even if all the apps are still running in memory the app will refresh.
Disabling all the built in facebook (meta) services and applications, helped a lot but it couldn't fix the overall issue.
If you use secure folder at all, just put the phone down because now we are talking several seconds between every thing you do in the app.
This phone runs hot, ALL THE TIME, as soon as you're in more than 1 app.
Increasing virtual ram did nothing for me.
Battery life was below my Z-Fold 3, it wouldn't last even close to a whole day with heavy use.
I say all this to say., in my opinion, Don't skimp, either wait for a 256GB to be available if nothing but the 128 is around or dont get it at all if all you want is the 128. The 512 runs like a dream, like i expect a flagship to run.
Why samsung decided to make this crap is beyond my comprehension, 8GB apparently can't even run their OS properly or with the latest updates, it wasn't optimized.
Pretty much the reason Samsung was giving "free" upgrades to the 12/ 256 version during launch here in the U.S. You couldn't even choose the 8/128 even if you wanted to almost everywhere which I guess in retrospect was a clue all by itself..
It's fairly obvious Samsung is maximizing profits over performance. The S22 Ultra is the biggest debacle since the Note 7, maybe bigger!

In case you haven't noticed 128GB of internal memory, which is actually 106GB after system memory is accounted for is ridiculous. That's all you'll have no matter how long you keep the device. The OP has made a clear case for why it's insufficient, especially on a flagship device. Another question, why did Samsung eliminate MicroSD on the S21 when almost all the rest of there mid and low price devices include it? To copy iPhone? Nope, they choose to do it for PROFITS! The cost to upgrade from 128GB to 512GB on the S21 Ultra is $400 USD, what a scam! Who will be surprised when the S23 rolls out with 64GB?

In case you hadn't noticed, I have a 512GB
In case you hadn't noticed, ALL devices have a lower usable storage than advertised. The advertised storage is the TOTAL storage. The OS and stock apps take up some space. So that's 100% normal.
You go off the rails here a bit talking about the S21. This is the S22 forum, and that's the decide we are discussing. The upgrade on the S22 from 128 to 512 wasn't $400. Matter of fact it was a $100 during preorder.
Can't argue about the microSD. THAT is all about profits. Of course the whole phone is all about profits.
All of that amounts to features/choices you don't like. It's doesn't put it on the debacle level anywhere near the Note 7. What you're saying is you'd rather have an exploding phone, since this is a BIGGER debacle.
I think more than just the RAM, the higher storage is likely improving performance. In the Note20 Ultra days, Samsung had a disclaimer that 512 GB models would have significantly faster read and write speeds than the 128 GB models.

Hi All Two years ago I bought a phone, from a slightly lower end than Samsung - that's what I thought at the time, until I started using the Samsung S22 Ultra 512GB a month ago. That phone was the Oppo Find X2 Pro 512GB. In two years I never...

Samsung Phone Lagging? Class Action Alleges the Company Misled Consumers on Speed and Performance
A proposed class action alleges Samsung Electronics America has misled both reviewers and the general public with regard to the speed, battery life and overall performance of certain Galaxy smartphones.

At least with the Note 7 Samsung knew what the problem was about and how to fix it. Refund the customers and ditch the model. Samsung is chasing their tail with the S22 Ultra, they have made multiple attempts and the device is still an absolute mess! It is what it is!

Why samsung decided to make this crap is beyond my comprehension, 8GB apparently can't even run their OS properly or with the latest updates, it wasn't optimized.

sorry to hear that. I have the SD 128Gb version and I have none of the problems you posted - luckily.

S22 Ultra Very Laggy and slow
I got my new S22 Ultra this monday and I have been having quite a lot of problems with it. The battery life is terrible, only around 2-3 hours of lite use. Snapchat is near unusable because it is terribly slow and laggy to use and the viewport...

You're hilarious, dude. My S22 is great, but yeah. I'm glad the Note 7 only exploded. At least it didn't lag sometimes. That's so much worse.
And Samsung never fixed the Note 7. They recalled it. With the S22, the issues with the 128GB model were preempted with free upgrades ro the 256 with more RAM.
I had a… similar ish experience. It lead me to believe that it isn’t actually the 8gb RAM variant that is the problem.
I have had two 256/12gb now. The first was atrocious and was getting roasting hot just starting up, as you described, and the battery life was horrendous.
The new one is a little warm sometimes, but the battery is superb. Like iPhone 13 Pro superb.
No idea what’s happening at Samsung but they can’t seem to get consistent 5nm SoC?

The Note7 battery issue was WAY overblown. I had 2, traded one for the S22U, and i still have a 2nd one. The keyboard and UI lag was HORRIBLE, and neither of mine nor any other people with Note7's i knew blew up.

Maybe your 128GB was defective?

I will only discuss the SD card part.
One of the reasons OEMs ditched it is performance, especially video cam. Flagships can record at very high framerates which needs a very fast read/write storage and counting on SD cards, even the best of them, will be highly problematic. That's also the reason why they keep offering SD cards slots in their midrange or budget phones, as it will never deteriorate their modest performance.

the SD 128GB is perfectly fine for me. I am using the camera for a decent amount and I have a DJI Mini 2 and I have not run out of space yet. Currently 60Gb still available. I have not seen RAM go above 6Gb use yet either.
Sure, I would have loved to get my pre-ordered 256Gb model, but I probably would still be waiting.
cheers

Not as overblown as the S22 problems.
Besides I think you missed the point of my post.
