I can't find this out using search so here's my question.
I bought a MyTouch 4G dirt cheap knowing the camera doesn't work. The app starts and you get a dimly lit black screen. Did the reset, different SD card etc.
HTC is willing to take the unit in under warranty repair.
While packaging it up I noticed what looked like a couple of very small dots that would not rub off on the upper corner of the display. I think now that they are on the inside of the glass which leads me to believe moisture.
I can't post the picture of the battery (due to being a newbie) but the indicator on it is kinda like red and black. Are they white like most other batteries under normal conditions?
Does anyone know where the indicators are on this phone and what they should look like?
I'm on the hook for 39.00 + shipping if they don't repair it as a "triage fee" and I'd rather not waste my time if that's the case. I don't know how much they would charge me if it was due to water/moisture issues and not so sure I want to find out.
Thanks

If you remove the battery, there is a white dot in the right lower corner of the phone; when it is ok. In case of water damage it turns into red I guess.

Looking where you said, I see the spot where the indicator used to be by the outline it left.

Ya, well lesson learned but I bought it knowing the camera didn't work I just didn't know why and took a chance.
Everything else is perfect and if HTC will repair it for under 100.00 I am still in real real good shape. It will still be cheaper than the 2yr contact price for the phone.

125.00 complete with everything all packaging etc. I could still probably get my money back.
The "if it's too good to true, it probably is" saying has proven itself once again.
Well for that price, you can't go wrong by just using it, and or selling it for parts.

Well, guess what? My MT4G is about five hours old and there is already a spec of dust under the screen. On the phone with T-Mobile right now to do a swap. Why can't HTC figure out this dust issue? How hard is it to glue a phone together?
Update: T-Mobile had no problem swapping it for a brand new device because it was so new. Even after that dust under the screen is covered under the one year warranty.
I would just return it, I doubt that many have this problem.

A new one is on the way. I'm hoping this is not like my Nexus. Either way, that's what warranties are for.

Are we talking about extended warranty here? If so, sorry to burst your bubble, but the regular one year manufacturer's warranty will cover this also -- without having to shell out that extra $6 a month
I had grey specks under my screen and I made her the exchange the phone.. the sales girl (a teen ager!) said she didnt see anything, but when I showed it to her in the sun she said "I would never notice that" (like I as being anal! LOL!)
It was the WHITE version...
I've seen other reports of this too. Best to inspect well upon receipt or in store before leaving.
Mine appears to have an issue with the FFC - it looks to be off center to the right. Works fine, but a QC issue for a phone the caliber of this and not impressive for HTC.

I had a single spec of dust under the screen, upper left corner. the girl in the store saw it as soon as I showed a white screen. exchanged it for a new one right in the store, no questions asked.
manufacturing defect? I guess. hope the screen doesn't have some gap that allows in lint because I carry the thing in my pocket all the time.
yep...got a mytouch 4g/hd today aswell. didnt get a chance to play with it until now, about 6 hours later. Smack dab in the middle was what i thought was a dead pixel. upon further inspection its a particle of dust or whatever. super super annoying. i have to exchange the phone and hope this one doesnt have this problem.
any way of removing this foreign particle w/o voiding anything?

Mine is the same, but it doesn't bother me.
I got my mt4g yesterday. First thing I did was look for dust under the screen. Had another mt4g on the way within an hour of getting my first one. The bad part is I got my phone direct from Tmobile so I have to wait for it to arrive. On the brightside they did free express this time.
Anyone got any images showing this? I dont see anything on mine but its only a few hours old and I got it late at night and I'm so tired I'm not even inspecting it that much at the moment. Will go over it tomorrow.
i use to work on LCDs. Basically the clean room wasn't that clean when they were putting on the polarized layer. There is not anything practical you can do to fix it.
Anyone know who the OEM for the LCDs are?
never had that problem with any of my htc's

I never buy the extended warranty but I do get insurance. Considering how many times I've used it, it's been worth it.

No this is a QC issue. There are gaps between the metal bezel that surrounds the glass and the rubbery material that covers up the sides of the phone. The dust/lint that got under my screen was definitely from the device being in my pocket.
I solved this by getting a nice case from T-Mo ($35 but it's sexy) to cover the exposed area. Haven't had a problem since.
I was going to get a mytouch 4g to play with until the nexus s came out. I played with one at t-mobile store and nothing really impressed me. After reading the mytouch 4g thread it sounds like HTC is still making crappy phones. Sounds like the same N1 issues all over again. We used hairdryer to heat up the glass then press the screen back down. I had to do this will all three of my N1's.

Crappy phone? It's one of the best Android phones out right now. There are a FEW people having issues. Happens with every cell. Guess the MT4G isn't for you. I'm loving it!

I have the tiniest, most annoying lint particle underneath my screen. As of now it is located far left. Seems as if it could make its way to smack dab in the center of my screen though. Kinda sucks but its so tiny you only notice it in full contrast to a white background if you really focus.
a single grey speck of dust in the top right corner, near the clock. Thought it was a dead pixel, but its there even when the phone is off. can only see it if I look really hard into that spot
I ordered the digitizer from deal extreme that was around 30 bucks, it took about 15 days from the day of purchase to when it showed up at my doorstep in oklahoma. Coming from Hong Kong thats about average I think.
The digitizer itself is indistinguishable from the original HTC one, the replacement was not easy but it only took me about an hour and a half. If this was my first phone repair ever it'd probably have taken me 4 hours or so. If you have all the proper tools and have dissasembled a phone before it should be fairly easy and quick. The worst part is that the digitizer is glued to the frame on the nexus with firm pressure I popped the stock one out and replaced it with the new one using loctite brand superglue to affix the new one.
All in all I highly recommend this digitizer and if you have the tools and the time do it yourself I couldn't bring myself to pay someone over 100 bucks to fix my phone.
Cheers for the info, I bought one from eBay which looked identical in the picture. However when I received it, it lacked the bottom buttons and top curve meaning I had gaps at both the top and bottom. Long story short I need to purchase another in the coming weeks and was looking at this one, thanks again
Forgive my extreme noobness here, but digitizer - is it the thingy that's responsible for registering touches on the screen?

Yes it is. Its top part of the screen that you touch and that part that gets scratched/ broken when people drop it.

It seems to be more responsive than the stock one but I bet when the other one got cracked it lost some response so I don't have anything good to compare it to now.

Just wanted to let you guys know
Tonight I replaced the S-LCD for my N1 with an ebay one, and the speaker with an ebay one too.
It was stressful because there was always the chance you could break it. Thankfully it was a success* and I did spend a couple hours applying new BSE and Clarivue protectors too.
Phone feels like new (its only 2 months old btw...) hehe
N1 is a great developer phone truly. In all aspects of the word. I see it now!
*did scrape my bottom "U-cover" ..the one which has the HTC logo. A little teflon peeled at the edge with the plastic pry tools (they're really not too strong though and wore quickly i might add. Recommend using a guitar pick like i saw one guy use on the online videos).
Anyways, short of buying a replacement of the $11 part, I'm really please with this phone
Is it possible to swap the AMOLED screen with an SLCD screen or are there actual hardware differences between the two models preventing that swap?

Good question. I was going to say "No, because I read it somewhere on the forums that you can't" , but then I found this thread:
http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/...ny-way-backup-wipe-before-sending-repair.html
Turns out the guy sent his AMOLED N1 to HTC to get repaired, and that they changed it with an S-LCD without changing his scratched digitizer.
I'm guessing that they are cost effective and mindful with warranties, so I doubt that they would have changed the whole Mobo for S-LCD functionality.
Again, this is just heresay and postulation.
"Got jacked.. 180 euro and all they did was replace my cracked Amoled with an SLCD... the blacks and gradients on the SLCD are awful. I was told the cover glass came together with the amoled. Mine is a little scratched so that would have been worth the extra $$. I had gone online to look around and found out after I prepaid that the front glass and the amoled are completely separate. My prepaid receipt just stated repair screen... so I could not go after them for not swapping my front glass. Anyways rant over. Very happy to have the phone back but it is not the same without the amoled."

Hey bud,
I thought about this yesterday, but short of a definitive answer coming through from other devs, i thought I'd offer to mail you my S-LCD (pre-replacement one, with some minor humidity damage, only viewable at an above 39 degree angle)...to you for free* (just paypal me the shipping. It'll probably be like $5 by weight). Let me know.
My screen looks amazing, all the colors look well saturated, etc no ghosting that i know of. but there is one issue.. whenever i press on the right bottom corner the digitizer actually presses on the LCD and makes that weird magnitized look when you would press on a new TV LCD or laptop LCD.. if you have a laptop or new tv you should know what i mean lol. This exact thing happened on my old HD7 with the same size screen. i seem to have problems with phones with 4.3" screens lol. ive had every mytouch phone from htc and the g1 and none have had this problem. even my atrix didnt have this problem and its a piece of poo.
Does anyone else have this issue? i mean its not a HUGE issue since you never really press down the right bottom corner but still. it bugs the crap out of me knowing its there. i would hate to send it back and wait weeks without a phone too =/ i bought it from ebay for $270 used with scratches lol so i wonder if they dropped it or something.
another weird thing is when i take it out of the battery case the problem is even worse because the phone case is kinda loose so the screen pushes into the case? i might buy a case mate case and see if it stops the problem..
also, where the problem is.. the screen colors are still perfect. its just when i press in that area. id be fine with it if the problem didnt get worse. it did on my HD7 though
Just the way its made unfortunately. Case isn't gonna make a difference. What worked for me (not completely. gone but significantly reduced) was put a little piece Of paper in the case is that corner and ever since I haven't seen it. You have to press pretty hard to see it. Hope that helps.

thanks for reply. glad to see im not the only one with the problem though! i will have to try it, just a small piece on the right side or what? well i thought the case would work because it has part that cover the front. i know it wouldnt make the problem go away but it would make me or other people no able to press there.

I just got it from Amazon. The first thing I thought when I got it was "wow, it's not even wrapped in plastic. someone can just open it without leaving any mark." I turned the box upside down to see what's underneath it, and there were two broken seals. They read "DO NOT ACCEPT IF SEAL IS BROKEN."
I opened the box and checked everything (without turning it on), but I was not able to find any flaw. I even saw an unboxing video on YouTube to compare, and everything seemed exactly the same.
So I have a choice to make: keep it or return it.
If I return it, I have to either wait until Monday to get it shipped or go to a store tomorrow. If I go to store, I end up spending more than $50 additionally due to tax.
If I keep it, well, I have it now.
Well I obviously wanted it as soon as possible, purchasing it on the day it became available. So I don't know what to do. Do you guys think it will be fine to just use it? I guess I can still return it any time (is it for a month for Amazon?) if it turns out to have any flaw, and because I really want to keep it, I feel like keeping it.
What do you guys think?
Well amazon do tend to break the seal to make sure everything is in there, happened to me a few times but as long as it works I don't bother with it. Zedomax had made some unboxing videos and his device also had seal broken but worked fine so if it works then I think you should be alright

VERY ODD indeed! Mine also purchased from Worst Buy had one of its two seals broken but everything was as new.
Why do you think this is?
Jumping in with a 'one of mine was broken from Amazon' as well. That's less of a problem for me than their new shipping company just leaving my tablet outside the door to my apartment. Apparently 'signing' is too much trouble for them. Never thought I'd miss UPS
My G'Note 10.1 came wrapped in the plastic. You can see in this video when I opened the tablet, but then again maybe because it's the 3G version.

I don't know, the girl working the pickup counter suggested it could've happened during shipping... I think more likely an employee started to open it and then changed his/her mind, lol
Could have been a demo....
I wouldn't worry too much about it. That happens sometimes on Amazon. I think they are checking to make sure the proper item is in the box.
As long as the tablet has all of its original protective plastic on it and functions properly it is likely unused.

Hey guys. I'm glad to be a member in the forum.
I just received my first tablet/android device; the grey 32 GB Note 10.1 from Amazon. It came in a plain cardboard box with no Amazon markings except for the text on the return label reading: "Amazon Fulfillment Services, 172 Trade St. Lexington, KY 40511" No packing slip and no padding/popcorn. The actual product box (slightly scuffed) had both product seals broken and says "16GB" on the lid's top in the lower left corner but the a white sticker on the side of the lid says 32GB.
Does any of the above sound strange? I think I'm going to return it unless you guys suggest otherwise.
I'm just curious about how I might go about changing the pebble blue housing to the white housing, if I were to purchase the parts somewhere. I've tried locating people in my area who might be interested in trading with me, but it's been futile. Obviously, I wouldn't be tearing the phone apart by myself, but does anyone know of any places that might do something like this, like Best Buy/Geek Squad?
I think it's probably impossible to change anything other than the backplate. And if it was possible it's probably a lot of expensive work that's not worth it.
Geek Squad would not have the slightest clue on how to go about that. I'm basing this off of the few times I've had them try to do anything. Their best advice was "battery pull, reboot." "What do you mean it's not fixed!?"
I'm assuming the front bezel would come off minus the screen, but turn your phone and look at the buttons, and the side bezel. All blue. It's just too much to easily replace. My .02

I think I would try to sell it on Ebay for all I could get and then use the money to get a white one. You'd probably have a lot more reliable phone in the end this way. You're looking at some major surgery to do the front cover, IMHO.
You can replace the battery cover, and they have screen covers that will change the color on the front, if you're willing to go that route. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822228
ur better off selling the blue one on ebay and turning around and buying a white one
The home button and battery cover would be cheap and simple however the front part would be expensive as I believe the colored part (under the glass) is part of the digitizer and screen which is over $100 for a replacement.
I didn't realize that the colored screen protectors were available, I may just have to give those a go! And as far as selling it on EBay goes, I most certainly would. My only problem being, that I don't have a phone I could use in the meantime!

do what I did
I got Verizon to send me an S III for free, because I had gotten 6 Nexus warranty swaps, all with the dreaded purple screens
I asked for white.
I didn't really want white, about 10 minutes after I ordered it I realized this.
I called back and they already sent me the phone. I was kinda pissed....
SO when it arrived, I called back. "You sent me the WRONG color!"
lol I'm getting my blue one later today. They already make enough money and get enough from me every month!
