Android 2.4 leaks on an XPERIA Arc prototype, is still Gingerbread - Captivate General

Well...we fight to see 2.2, hope 2.3 maybe in the next 5 years, 2.4 in the next life maybe.......
http://www.gsmarena.com/android_24_..._prototype_is_still_gingerbread-news-2202.php

Interesting...we are behind lol. Still getting some dev love though so if they can figure it out to get 2.3 I am not to worried about it coming from Samsung.

Saw this in the i9000 Gingerbread port thread too.
But notice the kernel version... it's identical to Froyo's...

ah nothing like a bit of satorical sarcasm. lol
wonder how long it will take the first 2.2 ROM to come out? a week maybe?
or do we need it on a phone before it can be cooked into a rom?
g1 already has roms, running the sdk 2.2
but we need to wait till the asop comes out before they get stable

JIt enabled in 2.2
new V8 javascript engine 3x faster.
Android 4.5x faster.
waiting for asop source code to get a 2.2 ROM !!

The browser is the only thing thats really faster in day to day use. Yes the cpu is tons faster but I dont think 2.1 even maxed the cpu on the n1. I thought getting froyo would keep me from getting the evo 4g but i just pre ordered my evo 4g.

How important are updates?

I want to get myself a Motorola XT720 because I like a lot of stuff about it. One thing I don't like though, is that Motorola has ditched this and it's stuck at 2.1. Currently, development is in progress for 2.2 (porting from the motoroi) in the XT720 forum here and it looks hopeful. Whatever the case though, it will likely never go beyond 2.2.
Now 2.2. adds a lot over 2.1 so having that would be great. 2.3 I don't see a need for as much as 2.2. The question is, if I'm getting a device that I want to keep around for a while, how bad is it if it's stuck at 2.2? Is it recommended that I avoid that phone (it's combination of price+features are why I want it) at all costs, or is being stuck at 2.2. not that bad?
What do you think?
2.1 wasn't bad itself and 2.2 brings some noticable improvements but not a paradigm shift. 2.3 seems to be mostly graphical changes more than anything else so you wouldn't be missing out on much here. Being 'stuck' on 2.2 is in no way a bad thing as it's still the best platform experience that i've had yet in a smartphone.
Personally, one thing i look for when choosing a smartphone is the level of community support and popularity of the device so that official updates are less of a concern down the line.
for me upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 was a big leap forward especially concerning my batterylifetime and 2.3 look is awesome.
but if you are happy with your current version don't change it.
Yes, for me it was speed. 2.2 really was amazing the difference in speed improvement/

Cyanogen works with the Milestone XT720 or are you talking about different milestone?
It seems some apps wont work in the 2.3 Rom, so just wait and see
I am not sure what to think about the improtance of updates.... In my limited experience with Android, so far I really cannot tell any difference before or after an update.
(I am speaking of official updates, not app updates from the market).........

Hi All,
I am using my Galaxy 3 on Froyo for sometime now and now I would like to upgrade to Gingerbread. I am not allowed to post under Development threads. Hence I have this post here.
Please let me know if there is any Gingerbread ROM available.

No, there's not such ROM... developpers still work on Froyo... the others wander whether G3 supports or not Gingerbread and whether Samsung will support or not Gingerbread on G3...
Samsung won't release gingerbread for our phones, I can guarantee you that. We're lucky if we get froyo.
First, is the hardware limitation
Second, there's no point for samsung to officially release it to our phone. We're not paying them anything anymore, It's much more profitable to release a new phone with gingerbread in it. That's how biz-nes works.
@thom47 there is NO hardware limits... if phone runs froyo it can also run gingerbread
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
I know it can run it technically and people can cope with it, but can Samsung agree to the performance of it is a different thing. But well, we're not getting it anyways so let's not get our hopes up

well if we would have good devs they could port it to sg3 from sgs, i mean how hard could it be?? (YES, i know VERY hard)...
There are not many significant features/improvements in Gingerbread over Froyo..I would be happy to get official Froyo soon..and maybe Cyanogen Mod later

I agree,
a stable Froyo + some usable custom ROM is much more important then still a newest version.
There are not significant advantages - and our hardware (no 3d acceleration, no JIT) has its limits

Why should JIT be a matter of hardware?
MAD-Team has enabled JIT for the G5 too...
Anyway it's very cool to have gingerbread because of the lock animation

for that attitude Samsung will ruin their business very soon just because of no customer support.
Supporting customer is the best way increase brand name and free fund marketing.
Like Apple. They are supporting their customer like GOD see their fame and they dont any kind of marketing
then why LG company is saying that lg optimus one will get 2.3 i think there hardware is same as our

[Q] Any reason NOT to upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread?

Is there any good reason to keep the Froyo 2.2.2 on the G2x instead of upgrading to the GB 2.3?
Any advantages or disadvantages of keeping Froyo. Do you lose out on anything?
I would upgrade to gb just to get the latest baseband, because it did help much with certain wifi and rebooting issues, then downgrade back to froyo simply because of lg camera app, and stability. I've previously owned the nexus s, which had gingerbread and right off I noticed this g2x version of gb needed much improvement in comparison to the NS version.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Update your device. The camera issue is not worth not updating. The phone works much better on Gingerbread. Froyo doesn't support dual core cpus well. Gingerbread was designed with the new dual core chips in mind.
But that browser bug in gb is a pain in the a$$ tho.

I only want Android 2.2 for its style so if anyone can make a ROM with Android 2.2 style but Android 2.3 Specs and updates, that would be nice

Ice Cream Sandwich looks like this??

Someone, probably from Samsung, shows SGSII with ICS in this video: http://youtu.be/SsV0OOmwvS0
From the video we can see Touchwhiz is overlayed on top of ICS, and this to me seems to be a wrong move from Samsung. It looks just the same as gingerbread, only some part of the OS is using ICS features.
Is this what Galaxy Note going to look like after the ICS update? What's your opinion?
It mite... it does not look like gingerbread.. that's touchwiz with ics.
I bet all phones are gona have their own interface with ics on it...

This is old news. First thread posted a few days ago in the SGS2 forum.
It is indeed TW on top of ICS.
Old news/repost = dead thread.
In answer to your question, yes probably. Sammy will probably lay their UI over ICS for all of their official rollouts...why wouldn't they, when they paid teams of dev's good money to program it?

And if this is really what going to happen, I'd rather flash an ICS ROM.

There's also a CM9 build for the SGS2.
Sadly, though everything's in either Alpha or Beta at the moment.
