ah nothing like a bit of satorical sarcasm. lol
wonder how long it will take the first 2.2 ROM to come out? a week maybe?
or do we need it on a phone before it can be cooked into a rom?

g1 already has roms, running the sdk 2.2
but we need to wait till the asop comes out before they get stable

The browser is the only thing thats really faster in day to day use. Yes the cpu is tons faster but I dont think 2.1 even maxed the cpu on the n1. I thought getting froyo would keep me from getting the evo 4g but i just pre ordered my evo 4g.

Free memory

I got a Captivate yesterday. I thought it was supposed to have 512MB of RAM. I installed Advanced Task Killer and its telling me I only have 100MB of free memory after I kill everything. Whats that all about? Shouldnt there be a lot more than 100MB free? I tried a Droid out last November and it only had 256MB of RAM and it would have 100MB free after doing a task kill on it. Where is the extra 256MB of RAM gone to?
I heard it was an operating system limitation in 2.1, which was increased in 2.2 to 512MB or higher.
Which basically means, they better freaking get on the ball with 2.2.

I hope you're right. Can anyone else confirm this?
I cant wait for someone to release a stock 2.2 ROM for this phone. I bet with the JIT compiler in 2.2 and the Hummingbird CPU in this phone it will absolutely fly!

Between full flash 10.1 and JIT in 2.2, I really hope that either the official update or a stock ROM makes it to the Captivate before the end of August.
Though really, I want stock. About the only think I like about TouchWiz is the contacts app.
I totally agree. Im excited for that. Are we just waiting for Google to release or something? Or a Dev team?
I thought the 2.2 source code was released so that everyone. Can use it.
And didt Samsung pretty much open the phone.

Waiting for Samsung to release the source code for the US version of these phones. They released the source code for the international version, but others have said its different enough so that it wont properly work.
I believe the 256MB issue is a kernel limitation. We shouldn't have to wait until Froyo as soon as someone compiles a kernel with HIGHMEM support we should have access to the full 512MB...hopefully something based on mainline 2.6.35.

no app2sd yet or stock android rom?

i may be getting an epic tomorrow but im debating it atm. i don't see alot of roms for this device, not even stock android ones. the biggest drawback for me is no apps2sd. i cannot live without it. as far as roms go i can develop some for us, ive made several hero roms before. but is there any development on apps2sd or do we have to wait for the froyo update?

Is apps2sd really a big deal for u? The epic has more internal mem than the hero so u won't run. Out as quick. I switched from hero with cm6 and I had to use apps2sd on hero, but I haven't been able to use all of the epics internal mem. Idk how many apps u got so if u got even enuff to use up the epic mem then I understand ur concern, but I really doubt anyone needs that much.

Thats true but the overall experience is better on Epic. If Epic 2.1 stock feels faster then EVO 2.2 stock then you have to wonder how fast this sucker is going to be in 2.2. Plus everybody is just waiting for 2.2 since whats the point putting some much effort of a software version thats hardly going to be used when 2.2 comes out. Is there still 2.1 development for Android phones that received 2.2, i seriously doubt it.

Epic screen is sooooo much better than evo and it really is way faster. Plus. I think a lot of development is overrated...all I'm looking for is that one good rom to stick with..I get tired of switching all the time. Just my opinion.

i dunno what ill do yet, my upgrade is due tomorrow. knowing my luck ill buy the evo and the development will cease.

Yeah bro you need froyo..but just be patient the word is froyo for epic sometime in nov. I'm coming from an evo and yes I'm dissapointed about the dev community or lack there of for the epic but even with that and the epic running 2.1 I'm still glad I switched from the evo..so pick it up its a great phone

Lol, I dont think so. Even if it ceases, there plenty to go around.
There is no incentive to develop for the Epic 4g at this point. The instant the phone was released it was made public knowledge that 2.2 was coming to it, and the closer that date comes the less people want to invest in tweaking 2.1.
App2sd is a cool feature and all, but I don't see a need at this point. I have a ridiculous number of apps installed and I still have a hundred MB free on the internal storage. I use maybe about 40% of the apps I have installed regularly and about 30% of what I have installed I never use. Maybe when Android starts getting better games ported over from iOS or developed natively on the platform, the need will arise.
And get whatever phone you want frankly. The epic is better than the Evo, and I am not saying that because I own one. If you are willing to make roms and help develop, I am not too sure why you are concerned about the lack of development on the phone. Isn't that something that regular users should be worried about?
I honestly wouldn't recommend the EVO to anyone... it was the worst phone I've ever used.

+1 same thing happened with me. I was with the evo for a week it just felt like a bigger hero honestly... epic is amazing.. go for epic you won't be disappointed.. you always have that 30 day return guarantee..

There is really no point for Apps2sd at all. What are you saving all that internal mem for? And just because there are more roms out doesnt mean thats a good thing. Coming from a G1 I hated that there were so many damn roms to choose from, and they all had the same basic ish cept maybe a few of them were themed up differently.
The Evo is basically turning into a iPhone IMO, and im sick of the users swearing up and down that THAT phone is basically the best in the biz...FALSE. The epic suits me more for what I need which is basically gaming, movies, and partial business. All the Evo has to go on is .3" of screen and a processor that not nearly as powerful as the epics and for that matter SENSE UI IS ****ING UGLY *shudders*
/rant
LMAO, I just love our small community. We dont need 50 differrent roms and become a clusterfuck like the other sub forums. We need to support each other
:EDIT:
Why does everyone want a stock android rom, I thought the point of these different phones was to be different

I wouldn't go that far. The Evo has a few advantages over the Epic and the epic has a few advantages over the evo. For one, the evo has a larger screen, and even though its only .3 inches, its VERY noticeable. Also, somehow even though they have a larger screen, the screen uses less battery than our epic's. Also, they have a kickstand which is pretty damn sweet.
I chose the Epic because of the Super AMOLED, which I THOUGHT was super battery efficient and also a brilliant display (1/2 aint bad), the amazing processor and the dedicated GPU. HTC makes amazing phones, and the EVO's build quality is higher than the Epic's, but they ALWAYS shortchange their phones by ignoring the graphics department. Every smartphone I have purchased has been an HTC device, and on EVERY SINGLE one they have had no hardware accelerated graphics, which has always become an issue.

Had an evo for nearly 90 days. Had froyo. Had every cm6 nightly. Had cm6 rc1.
Miss cm6. Miss froyo. But am loving the epic so much more than the evo.
Better battery life, better screen, physical keyboard, better stability.

Android 2.4 leaks on an XPERIA Arc prototype, is still Gingerbread

Well...we fight to see 2.2, hope 2.3 maybe in the next 5 years, 2.4 in the next life maybe.......
http://www.gsmarena.com/android_24_..._prototype_is_still_gingerbread-news-2202.php
Interesting...we are behind lol. Still getting some dev love though so if they can figure it out to get 2.3 I am not to worried about it coming from Samsung.
Saw this in the i9000 Gingerbread port thread too.
But notice the kernel version... it's identical to Froyo's...

Wasn't Eclair the same way?

How important are updates?

I want to get myself a Motorola XT720 because I like a lot of stuff about it. One thing I don't like though, is that Motorola has ditched this and it's stuck at 2.1. Currently, development is in progress for 2.2 (porting from the motoroi) in the XT720 forum here and it looks hopeful. Whatever the case though, it will likely never go beyond 2.2.
Now 2.2. adds a lot over 2.1 so having that would be great. 2.3 I don't see a need for as much as 2.2. The question is, if I'm getting a device that I want to keep around for a while, how bad is it if it's stuck at 2.2? Is it recommended that I avoid that phone (it's combination of price+features are why I want it) at all costs, or is being stuck at 2.2. not that bad?
What do you think?
2.1 wasn't bad itself and 2.2 brings some noticable improvements but not a paradigm shift. 2.3 seems to be mostly graphical changes more than anything else so you wouldn't be missing out on much here. Being 'stuck' on 2.2 is in no way a bad thing as it's still the best platform experience that i've had yet in a smartphone.
Personally, one thing i look for when choosing a smartphone is the level of community support and popularity of the device so that official updates are less of a concern down the line.
for me upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 was a big leap forward especially concerning my batterylifetime and 2.3 look is awesome.
but if you are happy with your current version don't change it.
Yes, for me it was speed. 2.2 really was amazing the difference in speed improvement/

Cyanogen works with the Milestone XT720 or are you talking about different milestone?
It seems some apps wont work in the 2.3 Rom, so just wait and see
I am not sure what to think about the improtance of updates.... In my limited experience with Android, so far I really cannot tell any difference before or after an update.
(I am speaking of official updates, not app updates from the market).........

Android 2.2 update?

I was wondering if I can update from froyo 2.2 too 2.3 or higher on the sidkick 4g... will switching roms do that or is there a update that I need to flash. Cuz I have apps that have featuers that require 2.3 or higher.

Nope. We only have 2.2.
sucks
so there is not even a way to trick the apps into thinking it is 2.3 in order to use all the feathers. like on skype you cant use the front camera without 2.3 or higher

And I think it shall always be stuck on 2.2. Samsung is just making too much profit with the Galaxy S phones to even bother with this Frankenstein of a mediocre phone. I have a Sidekick and I'm using the Clean Fusion v3 rom, which is nice, but it is depressing to know that the company just brushed this phone under the rug.
The specs are not that bbad at all. It comes very close to the features found on the Nexus S. Gingerbread would open up so many possibilities with CyanogenMod and MIUI. I'm tired of theming Froyo... but that's all we got.
