Not hardly. The Captivate is still a beast to be contended with - and we can overclock our Captivates past 1.2GHz as well. The screen size is something we can't contend with but honestly I had the 4.3 inch Evo and switched to the Captivate and much prefer the 4 inch screen to the 4.3 inch one. I have big hands and still had difficulty typing on the Evo. I have no such problems with the Captivate and I can only imagine how much worse it is on a 4.5 inch screen. In terms of software updates though, it is possible we won't see Gingerbread now and most likely have 0% chance of Honeycomb without a community port.
I really doubt it, considering there is no such thing as TRUE 4g yet.
4g!? I would kill for 3g! They dont have 3g wide spread enough. Good luck finding 4g. Maybe if you are in New York or LA. Dont count on it in flyover country.

That doesn't mean it is true 4G...they just include HSPA+ in the mix now. At&T is still working on a 4G network while having HSPA+ capability. And since we own the Captivate, the T-mobile network doesn't really matter.

Well that is news to me, i guess i stand corrected. Thanks for the article.
In early december LifeHhacker posted an article saying the ITU was not including HSPA+ in 4G, which is what I was basing my statement on. That being said, HSPA+ speeds are not what the ITU outlined as 4G speeds. ITU claimed that 4G was anything above 100Mbps on a mobile data network and 1Gbps on wifi, which HSPA+ has not reached or even come close AFAIK.

That's why I like living in DFW. Dallas is home to at&t. Good 3g everywhere. And cause it's their home, probably the best 4g area.

Which one makes the Captivate obsolete? It's obsolete only if 4G is something you want to use daily and is available to you. 3G is plenty fast enough for whatever my uses are without destroying my battery life.
Samsung Infuse serves the 4.5 inch crowd. I would never want a phone that big and there are plenty people with my same attitude.
HTC Inspire is a rebranded HTC Desire HD. Pretty much a 2010 phone which is at most equivalent but universally seen as lower on the Android chart.
Motorola Atrix is the only one I would give it to that would make the Captivate obsolete on AT&T. Very good specs all around.
It would seem like only the Motorola phone is making the Captivate obsolete so it isn't as doom and gloom as it seems. Nothing wrong getting beat by a single better phone after 6 months.

We get great 3G in Denver too usually but some towers went out in my neighborhood in the past few weeks and its really sucked. Like 100Kbps down and 1.7Mbps up because of the tower overload on the downstream. I don't care though, they waived my entire bill for the month because of it. We have 8 towers in a 5 mile radius and 4 of them have been down since late November and another one went down yesterday. In my place in Aurora, where Sprint barely had a signal, at&t was getting 5Mbps down and 1.8Mbps up. Ironically now that I canceled Sprint and moved, I get 3 bars of 4G in my new house. :/

no idea if this renders the captivate obsolete or not but this is off www.yahoo.com page http://news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20110105/bs_nf/76777 they make mention of Motorola's Atrix 4 from AT&T
For those grandfathered in for the 3g unlimited data, will you actually dismiss the 3g unlimited to pay extra on the 4g?
Will we be forced to go 4g if you get a 4g phone? Can we still stay with the 3g unlimited plan if opted?
I don't really think a lot of ppl really need 4g, yet... And I tether a lot on my laptop.

@boborone
ok....but you see my point. Are you going to give up your unlimited data for capped data on 4g?
With that much usage, do you have any complaints about the 3g bandwith? I'm sure for the average user, 3g is fine.
BTW 3day usage? Really? ..and I thought I was a porn freak... j/k
no way.
still a beast hardware wise and have a beautiful screen.
Nice size....good combination of being really thin but still having nice heft and not feeling cheap. Some people have to have the shiniest newest toys but for most this phone should have no problem staying relevant into 2012 for those who have it on 2 year contract.
of the phones mentioned in the line up the atrix was the only one that turns my head with its dual core processor. Camera is secondary for me on a phone so no biggie but was disappointed to see it was 5mp and not 8mp (i believe the atrix is/was the olympus which was originally rumored to pack the 8mp). The other interesting thing with the Atrix is they seem to be on the ball with marketing and some very interesting accessories (particular docking stations).
The only hitch i see right now with the Atrix is that its listed to come with 2.2 installed. I could be wrong but my understanding is that Froyo can't fully utilize the dual core processor so it may not provide any substantial benefit until updated to gingerbread and we all know how updates can go so who knows what beastly competitors may be out there by the time it can fully utilize its dual processor potential.
The other two phones mentioned were pretty uninspiring.
As sterile as IOS has been i am definitely interested to see what they do in 2011. I think they will be more agressive in the face of some of the monsters being pitted against the iphone. At the least i think we see some nice storage options 64gb or possibly larger which even with the sterile ios would be enticing for those who have a lot of media they want to pack on their device. While i don't think it will have widgets.....I do think they will finally give in and have a better notification system and customizable lock screen.
There will be a flurry of great phones hit in 2011 and while they may make the captivate less inspiring or impressive to users it certainly won't be obsolete. (i am off contract with my captivate so it will take something pretty special to make my lock in a new 2 year). At the speed things are going no device is likely to be at the top of the list for very long before the next best thing arrives.
I'd pay an extra ten bucks like sprint does. My wife who doesn't tether has done 1200 mb so far this month. Lots of down time at our jobs.

I tried the vibrant (first time i left htc android phones) and i was extreamly disapointed just because of that i wouldnt :/ but thats just me
I think the difference here would be the updates would be coming from google not samsung, hardware on my old vibrant was awesome, well except the plastic feel, its software that held it back.
Btw love the look and feel of my mt4g better
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I am. I am a Vibrant owner transitioning to MT4G. Transition has not been smooth: Both handsets I have been sent so far have dust under the screen. Plus I really don't like the MT4G screen...
Only thing is the plastic build, why Samsung?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Hell no! Why would I want to leave what I have now for a plastic feeling phone? Plus, if you ask me its a downgrade. No 4G, really? This is where they lost me. Why build what most will look at as a super phone, but leave out the new speeds in 4G? I rather have 4G over gingerbread any day.
biggest deal breaker for me is no HSPA+
Nobody ever said it didn't come with HSPA+. I doubt that it wouldn't if it is to be such a big hit for them. I also came from a Vibrant and like everyone said, the hardware was great but the software and Samsung support wasn't.
I like the mt4G and I'll stick with it until something more revolutionary comes out. The Nexus S just looks like an iphone wannabe to me (in terms of looks). No thanks.
Yeah...don't jump with "No HSPA+ love"
I have to say, this looks promising, and if it has at least the specs of Galaxy S + HSPA+LED Flash+ FF Camera/Video Chat... Aaaand Gingerbread!!! THAT's the killer folks....
SUX PART for me...... my MT4G is coming in mail in the next few days.
I would never give up my MT4G for a Samsung phone even though updates will come from Google I've been burned way to many times by different Samsung phones I've had in the past not gonna take the chance. If it was a HTC that would be a whole different ball game.
If I had know it was coming out soon I would've waited to check it out.

I'm interested, but I really enjoy this myTouch 4G.
I had the Vibrant, and absolutely loved it save for two things: the GPS/Compass problem (which was never fixed), and the lag in the OS. Besides that, I loved the screen and the media playback.
The Nexus S would have to pull some **** to woo me. I'm talking: first-party docks, physical camera button, HSPA+.
Depending on how nice Android 2.3 'Gingerbread' is, I might buy one just to play around with it, before I decide if I'm going to hold onto the myTouch 4G for a while. If T-Mo doesn't plan on updating the firmware, then that may weigh in on my decision. Otherwise, the myTouch 4G is kind of everything I was waiting for, with a little bit of stupid carrier bloat.
I read somewhere that T-Mo stated something along the lines of: '...we're not going to update the firmware unless there's a real reason to', in regards to the myTouch 4G. If that's the case, I may return it.
For now, I just want to enjoy this awesome phone. This is hard, of course, when 4-5 of the nicest phones you've ever seen leaked today. What a crazy day!
If the Nexus S was made by HTC I'd either be be crying my eyes out right now or be racing to the nearest t-mobile store with my MT4G all nicely packed up and ready to go (today is last day of my remorse period). I was a bit reluctant to buy the MT4G because I was really wanting a Nexus 2. Ended up liking the MT4G so much that I was quite content giving up on the Nexus 2, especially since we have perm-root. Now that I know the Nexus S is made by Samsung I couldn't be happier with my decision not to wait around.
Oh and according to the leaked BestBuy documents the Nexus S supports EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900MHz, HSUPA 5.76/7.2 900/1700/2100MHz, HSUPA 5.76/7.2 900/1700/2100. Anything missing?
If this has a non-RFS based filesystem and a working GPS, it could be a nice phone.
However, the new Samsung phone coming in February looks nicer with a larger, s-amoled 2 screen and HSDPA+ but it doesn't seem to have a FFC.
The first thing I noticed was the absence of a track ball/pad. That made cursor navigation VERY frustrating on the Vibrant. Plus, they kept that ity-bity volume rocker. I’ll bet that wee power button is positioned the same too. That made me want to pull my teeth out. I don’t see any REAL evidence of a notification LED, as the proxy/light sensors can be mistaken for just that. I shudder to think it has the same GPS and compass hardware as the Galaxy S line. The leaked spec sheet shows NO HSPA+. Same Vibrant all-plastic body too.
Without more evidence I will assume that the Nexus S is just a Vibrant with a bigger screen, FFC & LED flash. Pretty much what the Vibrant SHOULD have been on release.
Gingerbread? We’ll all have that in time. Especially on current rooted phones. Faster CPU? Doubtful. Who cares, if my above assumptions are even half correct.
Absolutely not what I would expect from something branded as a Nexus. SAMOLED is nice though. MT4G wins in my book.
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/11/nexus-s-specs-leaked/ Nexus S may not has HSPA+
I must say I'm definitely intrigued. I own the MT4G and I'm definitely happy with it but I am curious about the Nexus S mostly because Nexus One was considered such a good phone and I figure follow up to it has to be just as good if not better.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Let's not forget that G2 and MT4G is T-Mo's own branding and marketing so "T-Mobile phone = HSPA+ love"
Why are you guys liking the MT4G when it has dust under the screen? Should just go for the Nexus S

That would only hold true if both phones were made by the same manufacturer. Since the N1 was made by HTC and the Nexus S by Samsung all bets are off. For what it's worth this phone could be called anything. Just because it's called Nexus doesn't mean it'll follow up where the N1 left off.
So the CES 2011 in Las Vegas just introduced a new array of phones..we see some cool features such as the dual core processors/slimmer design/brilliant display/8MP cameras/1080p..
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, Moto Atrix 4G, LG Optimus 2X & Black, HTC EVO Shift, Samsung Infuse..which is tickling your fancy? Having just used the Mytouch 4g for a little over 3 weeks, I'd like to know what you guys think of the new phones compared to the Mytouch..Discuss..
Since we have the second gen snapdragon and more ram i think we will be better off than most of the other 2010 phones, i'm glad i used my dad upgrade for it though because i will be eligible in July.
May I say it might be nice to have a link of this information so we might look.

I've mentioned a while back that the physical aesthetics are extremely similar to iPhone 3Gs, but that's actually not a bad thing, albeit not very original. I will be watching this handset closely and may just have to trade in my MT4G as well. Definitely seems like a very appealing option.

super phones....hmmmm.....impressive hardware but I want to see how they behave in real world scenarios regarding battery life, picture quality, overall quality...why do I need a dual core for running gingerbread....not really sure....hardware impresses first and then you realize if the software on the beast sucks it doesn't help. I have the MT4G and the front facing camera is almost useless because Tango and Qik are lousy programs. The wifi calling is a nice idea but only when the software is great. I don't game on my phone so I am happy for now with my MT4G and wait until there are reall innovations in hardware and software. Faster is no selling point for me....

it can have 40 cores it wont make a difference if its no better than the 20 hours i get out of my mytouch. Agree vid chat is a joke on android right now (granted how often would we really use it if it worked fantastic)
Im sure a year from now ill want a new device but now and until prob the middle of this year the mytouch will be okay. We have moto releasing some devices (we all know their history with rooting) and samsung (lol software updates)
the optimus is cool but its LGs first go into smartphones (let alone cutting edge ones) the jury is still out. See how they handle this device then make a decision

Well initially my plan was to upgrade from my HD2 next end of this year when dual core cell based proc came out on phones. But since I lost it I had no choice to buy MT4G. Guess ill wait once dual core is more mainstream then I mean I been using MT4G for one day now and man o man its super stable and the boot is fast as hell.
If you are trying to be head in the tech world you better have alot of money as you will need it to keep up. Mostly everything gets old in 5-6months. Thats why I picked HD2 still beating down Evo fanboys.

^ enough said lol. This is why most Evo fans IRL came up to me and was like OMG how do I get it to look like that.
So I been hearing about LTE and how fast it is and I couldn't believe it, so got me a thunderbolt, I came from iPhone 4 on Verizon and the speeds of data is ridiculous , I feel like I don't have to connected on WiFi anymore if 4G works, I also have a nexus s 4G and I wish the phone would come to Verizon with LTE or at least the nexus s, 2 things I saw that I don't like about the TB are the screen (resolution could be better and putting ambled right next to it make it look wash out ) and camera (I can't believe the iPhone 4 still kick ass in the department ) , other then that really like the pho.e

A couple of things if you wanted an AMOLED display, why not go with the droid charge? You still can for a modest restocking fee. And I will have to disagree with you on the camera. My fiance has an iphone 4 and its deceiving. The higher pixel density on iphone make photos look like they are clearer than the TB. But when you put them on a TV or a computer monitor you will find that the TB photos are sharper and more saturated. Not hating just suggesting.

I like the OLED screens on samsung, but no way is it a deal breaker between having the thunderbolt and the charge. Better screen or not, it doesnt make up for the other shortcomings of the charge. If you want a samsung phone, I would try to wait it out until probably the end of the year for the Galaxy S2.

Samsung for at least the near future, seems to be hoarding their OLED screens for only their phones, which sucks. I've heard rumors of an LTE Nexus S phone in the works (since there's already a CDMA one on sprint), but I have no idea which carrier will get it (since att and sprint are rolling out LTE very soon). Just noticed your signature says sent from a Nexus S. You probably knew it was built by samsung I assume, though obviously it followed standards set by google so it wasnt the typical samsung phone.

I've had it hit somewhere around 30mbps if I'm near a tower and conditions are right, but on average, it's somewhere between 15-20mbps for me.

I am excited to receive my Thunderbolt, hopefully tomorrow (Wed).
I was waiting for LTE to be delivered. But, I was also waiting to compare the HTC Sensation on TMobile before making a choice.
Overall costs and VZW's unlimited 4G were the deciding factor.
I had a Samsung Captivate on AT&T and was severely underwhelmed. the screen was nice, and I liked the carbon-look aliminum body. But the GPS issues, AT&T craptastic voice quality and data network dropouts in my area made me hand it back in only three weeks.
MY GF has an iPhone 4, and had 3 and 3GS before that. The camera on my old Nokia 5800 is only 3.2MP and takes much clearer pictures than her iPhone 4. She asks me to take pix with my non-data phone just because hers is pixellated beyond belief. And it is slow to acquire lock and take the picture.
I really hope to love the TBolt.

Ok so here is my story first we were with att they sucked balls so we payed cancellation fee and moved to verizon and we got three lg revolutions we returned all three because the screen colors are nasty the screen looks like its made of yellow pixels and the battery and camera were just way to ****y. So next we got droid charges this is **** like the screen is nice but it scratches in a day ,the phone overheates after 5 minutes of use ( not overclocked) and would lose gps fast ,and it felt like a toy no kidding. So next we got thunderbolts had it for a week and love it No problems the screen is not as good but at least it dont scratch as fast and i like the thunderbolt because it has so much roms not like the lg where they have no roms or the charge where they have only debloated roms **** that ,Thunderbolt is king .

Yup, nice having a faster connection on my phone than I do at home!
Please every one bare with me here, the time has come for me to upgrade to a new phone, although i currently own a Dell Streak and its not bad for what i do, i need a smaller phone but that continues to carry a large screen, therefore i have narrowed it down to the inspire and infuse.
i checked youtube for video comparisons, didnt find any, so im posting a thread here hoping to get good answers. I highly doubt someone has both for any reason, but you never know.
should i jump with either of these two or pass and wait a bit longer for something better?
Cheers
Fox
I can only comment on the inspire.
That said this phone is just awesome, I've tried a captivate for a little bit and that wasn't too bad, but no HTC sense. For me sense is where it is at. Also this phone is going to be heavier than the infuse, its metal. It has a very solid feel to it and at this point I wouldn't trade it for any other phone out there.
Also if you like playing with roms there are prolly, not for sure, but most likely more roms for this phone as it has the desire hd in Europe as an almost exact match.
Of course you could wait for the holiday, but that is going to bee several months away.
HTC is better than Samsung when it comes to cell phones in my opinion.

yes i figured i would get more answers leaning towards the HTC since this is a HTC forum, but I would post this on the Infuse forum as well to see... if thats ok with the mods.
I like that you mentioned about the ROMS, ive been looking at both the infuse and HTC inspire, and the HTC has sooo many devs and ROMS, i love it.
coming from a dell streak.. if you go to the Dell Streak forum you will only see one developer, he can only do so much with what he has, and the roms are just too simple for my taste.

You're also going to receive input from people biased against Samsung. There are a lot of former Captivate owners here who have a real problem with Samsung and the way they handled the Captivate issues. I happen to be one of them.
I will never buy another Samsung phone.
A pretty screen does not a reliable phone make.
HTC is a better phone. If the HTC Holiday comes out around December, that's the one to get, assuming they make good on their new bootloader policy and it comes unlocked,if you want to wait that long.
Otherwise, an inspire will keep you happy for a long time, and the dev section here is quite robust, as you can tell.
The screen on the Infuse is BARELY bigger than the Inspire but the phone is MUCH larger. Samsung gave it a lot of useless area at the top.
In the 1, or 2 side by side speed NON-SCIENTIFIC tests that I did, the Infuse had faster data transfer speeds.
If i were you i would wait for the galaxy s2 to come to att or somethin better then that. The inspire is really fast but its kinda getting outdated and the gs2 will last you longer.

Inspire
I would go for Inspire as it has lot of roms. the only downside to it is battery life, but it depends on how u use, there are roms that can improve battery life.
Inspire hands down.. I hate samsung. but thats not the reason..
the infuse is nice. solid body construction.. nice screen.. very thin.. feels nice in hand.. and for me its fast.. and does what i need it to do..
the infuse. not much exp with it outside of messing with a co-workers infuse.. I felt like i could go on a killing spree with that thing. so huge... and felt cheap compared to my inspire..
I have had both and am going back to the inspire with the new Red inspire, the infuse is a ok phone but the big problem was the rooting, the actual rooting was easy but then you had to install a second recovery or e3 recovery in the phone with root explorer and then if you wanted to install a rom you had to use the red recovery instead of the green recovery or you would mess up the phone. Just to many thing to mess with and remember for a simple process. The choice of roms is also worthless and they are not all that great. I would say forget the infuse and get a inspire.
Take it from a former Captivate user. Inspire all the way. I just am not happy with the way Samsung handles issues with phones. Releasing os updates and such. GPS issues on there phones. Froyo took almost a yr to drop to the Captivate. HTC phones on other carriers were getting it much faster.
There is a 50 dollar difference in the price and that 50 bucks is not worth it for just a smidgen better screen. Sense is so much better then touchwiz.
Both communities have good development. I don't think i will be looking at another samsung phone. I'll stay with them for computer lcd's but going to be with htc from here on out.
Got an Infuse the day they came out, Used it for three weeks then traded it in for an Inspire. The 4.5 inch screen was great, since I was used to the big screen of a Streak. downside was weak radios, GSM,Wifi, and 3G. I had no problems with build quality or size. The screen colors were over saturated and sort of cartoonish. My$.02

Yes I did. Edited the post. Had a migraine all day.
i was holding both in my hands, comparing them.
ended up with the inspire.
there was also the $80 difference to consider.
infuse $149 vs. inspire $79 + 15% military discount.
the infuse was jsut too big for my hands,
it felt like a glock double stack 9millimeter made of plastic as comapred the inspire which seems like a 1911 with slim grips all metal feel.

With an upgrade available, the Inspire on AmazonWireless is $0.01 with no (most states) tax. Considering the Infuse is at least $100 everywhere, it became an easy choice for me.

If you've already seen the Xiaomi M1 announcement about a month ago, well, forget it, because Xiaomi has already made some significant changes since then. What we've just learned from today's Beijing launch event is that the M1 -- now officially "Xiaomi Phone" -- no longer packs a 1.2GHz dual-core chip; instead, it's been given a bump to a Qualcomm MSM8260 SoC, thus becoming the first Chinese phone to sport a 1.5GHz dual-core chip. As part of the Snapdragon package, the phone is also powered by a powerful Adreno 220 graphics processor, which will no doubt make good use of the phone's 1GB RAM and a staggering 4GB ROM. Oh, and that ¥2,600 (about US$410) price tag? It's now ¥1,999 ($310), and will be available for pre-order on August 29th for October delivery. Read on for more surprises!
Update: We've just been informed that there will also be a 1.2GHz version available for an even cheaper price!
Update 2: Our hands-on post is up!
Xiaomi Phone with MIUI OS: a $310 phone with 1.5GHz dual-core SoC and other surprises
Unlike most phones with a 1400mAh or 1500mAh battery these days, the Xiaomi Phone gets a ginormous 1930mAh cell instead, and we're promised to get two days worth of real-life usage out of it -- CEO Lei Jun emphasised the "real-life" part, so we shall see. Another surprise -- albeit an odd one -- is that this phone supports both GPS (with A-GPS) and Russia's GLONASS, meaning President Medvedev can navigate around his country just fine while updating his Weibo Twitter.
As for the rest, you get a 4-inch 480 x 854 LCD courtesy of Sharp (LCD for better outdoor performance, and 4 inches for Asian ergonomics), three touch buttons below the screen, a customisable "Mi key" (camera shutter or Weibo; long press for home screen), an eight megapixel camera with an F2.4 lens, and a dual antenna design that plays well with any kind of grip (obviously a little wink at Apple). Dimension-wise we're looking at 125mm x 63mm x 11.9mm, weighing 149g or 5.3 ounces -- just a tad heavier than the iPhone 4. As for accessories, we're told that there will cases in at least seven bright colors, along with spare batteries of the same set of colors (that's how awesome Xiaomi is).
Of course, let's not forget the real star here: the MIUI (pronounced "mee-you-eye") OS, which is a low-level custom UI based on Android 2.3.5. There's no question about MIUI's rapidly increasing popularity in recent years (Xiaomi quoted a user base of about 500,000), but if you insist on trying other Android flavors on Xiaomi's hardware, then you'll be pleased to know that this phone lets you flash whatever firmware you like.
If you're starting to doubt the Xiaomi Phone's reliability, you shouldn't -- we've been told that this phone's been thoroughly torture-tested in the lab, simulating two years worth of usage. "This is why we take much longer than shanzhai factories to make a phone," said the CEO. We'll see about that in two months time, really looking forward to it.

This thing is pretty awesome. Look at the price for the hardware people...$300...1.5Ghz dual core. Good camera, decent screen. Big battery, customizable....hell if it supports US 3G bands, that's make it an instant sell.

i'm assuming that means unlocked bootloader and superuser capabilities. and given the awesomeness of this phone it will be a /very/ short wait for cm7 to support this phone. i'm guessing the dev community will be huge if this phone delivers on it's promised awesomeness
I am extremely interested in this phone.
I find it interesting that the price point that this phone comes in at is just a little more then most of our new phones in the US with a 2 year contract!
Talk about getting ripped off!
