[Q] Trouble with Samsung OEM Spare Battery System for Galaxy S - Epic 4G Accessories

Received my Samsung OEM Spare Battery System for Galaxy S which I intended to use with my Epic 4G. (A charger plus spare battery for those unfamiliar.)
Samsung EBH973UVBA
The charger refuses to charge my original battery (led flashes red, green, orange, then stays off), and my phone refuses to charge the battery that came with the charging system (Battery not connected).
The phone will run off of the new battery.
I am returning the "system". Should I request a replacement or is this expected behavior? Anyone else have this item?

If you bought it from sprint then definitely demand a replacement as this is not normal. If not, i'd just get my money back. As far as I know some people have had the battery not connected issue when using other galaxy s batteries
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Definitely not normal. I have two of those things (for 3 batteries total) and can charge any of the batteries from either of the chargers or my phone. It usually cycles through the colors then settles on red while it charges.

Exchange it. I have the same kit and it chahrges just fine either battery as well as the phone when plugged in.

Exchange it. Mine works great.

I am having the EXACT same issue with this charger system and my Samsung Vibrant.
Will not charge the battery that came with my phone. And if I plug a charger in to the phone while the new battery is installed, the phone shuts off. This is not acceptable.

how does it go orange we have a blue and red led?

i assume he is talking about the led on the charging station.

Definitely not right as I have used that charger since roll out day. Occasionally it blinks orange and I just pull the battery and reseat it. Since I have three extra batteries it almost is always being used. How I got three extra batteries and one charger is another story.

Mine works perfectly with no issues. It charges both of my batteries.

I am having the same problem with this charger as others. I believe I bought it new on Amazon, and my girlfriend was never able to get it working. Just checked it myself and confirmed the same symptoms as above. I am going to try another battery but I doubt it works and it's probably not worth the effort to return it.

Check the documentation to make certain it's meant for your phone model. I accidentally bought the wrong OEM Samsung Galaxy S battery/charger package and had the same symptoms (charger wouldn't charge original Epic battery, Epic wouldn't charge new battery). It turned out that there was a different model for the Epic 4G, even though the batteries are physically almost identical (the new one had a blue label, whereas the original had a black label) and the new battery would power the phone, just not charge in it. I ended up ordering the correct kit, and it works correctly.

Thanks for the info! I have a feeling you are probably right, because I recall my girlfriend saying there was a problem with the battery too. She broke her USB plug so I have her on an Inspire right now, and I'll check the charger after her phone is fixed.

my first charger broke, but sometimes when using my functional charger. Treat the battery like a nes cartridge slide in to edge and slowly push in and down. Also when it acts up sometimes remove battery try again. cheaply made, expensively sold

My Universal just died

*sob*
My Universal just died, without a warning, 1 years 6 months 5 days (bought 26 December 05 to today 1 July 07).
It just cannot power up anymore.
All my data is inside, last backup is few weeks ago, how to get my data?
Anyone had this experience with it just died without doing anything?
@Midget
How did your died?
battery? ;(
How it's possible?
Mine suddenly died after 2 years, no way to power it on even with the charger. But i just replaced the battery and it came back to life!
Nothing helps.
I have 3 batteries,
1. 1 half dead battery (half dead after 6 months of use)
2. 1 used for long time battery (the current regular used with care for about more than 1 year and Universal died with)
3. 1 new battery which bought and tested working not too long before this incident and a hardly used spare battery.
Before my 1st post above, tried everything.

When putting in the charger, do you see a permanent RED Led instead of regular Orange charging status Led?
the screeen co-axial cable has gone in both of mine (im a heavy user when it comes to that )

That happened to me. I just got a new battery, and even it sais it is 100% charged in WM, when I plug it in to the charger (PDA on standby) I get a permanent red light where the charging status is for a while, and then the device boots up and the orange light is back. I suppose I should let it charge till the orange light changes to green and then use it?
As I say I have 3 batteries.
The regular battery (the 1 year old one) which I am using is like the situation you describe at battery Low situation, trying to charge but fail.
But is there an explaination why my new battery does not work too. Measured across voltage is 4.2V
I have also measured from the USB to battery point, the 4.2V voltages are there.
The RED Led is always RED when charger is inserted. Without charger, no Led.
Is the RED colour LED software or hardware controlled?
How is the battary voltage connector connect from battery to the board.
Between, if it is free, which will you choose,
1. Dopod U1000
2. Dopod 838 Pro
3. Dopod D810
4. O2 Atom Life
5. O2 Flame
Actually I would like to have Karser or Omni, but not here yet.
Still no phone yet, using my old Nokia 6170 which I grab from my angry son. Hee Hee
you should go to a specialized service.
probably there is something to do and to rescue your device.
it shouldn't die just like that. that's why i think that a replaceble component died. but a replaceble one.
also, i read something about batteries on the internet.
for PDAs it is adviceble to charhe them whenever possible.
so if you have 90% of battery left, you should charge it.
this is the oposite for regular phones where is adviceble to
drain the battery and only then to charge it (for maximum life).
but you should never let your device over night with the charger plugged in,
or for a longer time that it is necesary to reach 100%.
XDA Repairs
Hi CWKJ,
You could try xda repairs, they may even send you the parts for DIY.

Ok, here is the full story.
My Universal is still cover with special paid warranty which I have a choice for repair or change a new device. In case of my choice is to repair, I will not have any choice of new device for future failure of Universal.
I am lazy to do it myself and Universal is going to be end of product life and service part here.
The repair agent said that both my LCD and Mother Board needed to change, any combination of new and old does not workl
The choices of newI have is Dopod U1000 (need some $ topup), Dopod 838Pro, Dopod D810 (I like this very much), O2 Atom Life and O2 Flame (the obvious choice). But my interest is in Omni or Kaiser.
Before sending for Agent to check what is the problem. I make some analysis myself.
The problem is it never power up with neither of my 3 batteries. Measured Voltages coming from USB to battery contacts, 4.2V is there. So that means this voltage going into the Mother Board has problem. So I tried to charge one of my power low battery as suggested throughout the night. Interestingly the Universal Alarm went off in the middle of the night and my whole family was up. At this time, the LED was green and the Universal was up and it is warm from the charging. So I thought it is alive. But the next morning when I woke up, charging is completed and Universal is no longer warm, it is RED LED again and it never wakes up. The voltage across the batteries are all 4.2V.
Why don't try borrowing a teseted functional battery from a friend to do a test? I get the red LED light problem when the battery isn't inserted properly or if the battery is faulty.
What I do is to remove the battery, and reinstall it and everything works again. I don't think it is the motherboard problem, otherwise the red LED illuminate.
I think what CWKJ is experiencing with his Universal is quite similar to my Xda II a couple of one and a half years back. Service center claimed that I should replace the mainboard, but I think they were just looking for the easiest way out - when it could just be one or two component that does not pass the electricity through.
So, somehow I still hope someone could revive my Xda II which is now sitting inside the drawer as paper weight - I now am using Universal.

Battery Charging Issue

I know there is a bug in which after an overnight charge, the unit is unresponsive unitl you soft reset it. I've read the thread. My TP exhibits this problem as well. However, mine seems to have an additional problem not mentioned in that thread. After charging overnight, my TP IS NOT CHARGED! After an overnight charge, the battery is nearly dead and a soft reset does not fix that. It has happened several times now. After plugging it into the charger before bed, I confirm that the charge light is on and that it shows charging on the status screen, however, THE BATTERY IS NOT CHARGING. Has anyone else experienced this quirk? It doesn't always do this, however, so I'm very confused about what is happening.
Dumb question - but are you using the factory charger? I had a problem when I purchased my Touch Pro in the fact that I used another charger which also was USB for another phone, but for some reason had that problem. Using the charger supplied with the phone fixed it.

Yup. Factory charger and cable. Not a dumb question, BTW. That could have very well been the problem although any USB charger should work.
What about if you turn the phone off and charge?
On a related issue, I used TomTom the other day for a 1 hour trip with the phone on a USB lighter socket charger. Started with 48% full battery, when I finished the battery was down to 30%!!! Basically the phone uses more power than the USB can provide when the screen+GPS is on!! I also find plugging the phone into the charger with the screen on & WiFi on will mean the phone charges at a speed of 1% every 8 minutes - taking all day to charge from empty!
To ease the problems I purchased a separate phone+battery cradle off eBay and a spare battery. I swap to the charged battery every morning and put the other one in to charge. The used battery is usually at 25% after a good days use. Before I did this and charged using the USB plug I used to get 6 hours use before needing to re-charge.
Disconnect the cable from the factory charger and plug in in your PC, see if it charges there. If it does, then you can return your charger, if it doesn't then i'd return my TP.
I have had the Touch Pro for eleven days(got in October 31,2008) and I have issues with the phone. First, I love this phone, however, the battery will not hold a charge. I started with a fully charged battery, used sprint navigation to direct me on a 2 hour trip. My phone was dead by the time I got to my destination. The phone was extremely hot, I mean extremely hot during the entire trip. The next day I took the phone into the sprint store and they switched the battery and told me that the phone check out okay. for the next several days, i used the phone sparingly to see if the battery was okay. I made about 7 calls and 12 text messages, my battery was down 3 bars after being fully charged. I tried the navigation within the city limits and the phone again stared to get hot. My sprint picturemail would not work, it takes hours to send a picturemail. I call customer care and talked with technical support, who did not have a clue about the phone, they had me on hold, researchec, told me to do a few things and then had me to perform a hard reset. The picturemail worked for a few messages and then it started to take hours to send a picturemail. i then went into a sprint store for ready now service to see if there was something I was doing that was causing the battery loss, etc. The CSR in the store did not have a clue about the phone. He went through the computer told me a few things to do and that was it. My battery continued to perform poorly, so I again called customer care and was told afte a serious of conversations and procedures that i need to have the phone replace and that my phone could be defective. They told me to go in to a store and have them make the switch. Well, there are no phones in any of the stores in my area. I call customer care again and asked them to look at the notes on my account and send me a replacement phone, because there are none available in the stores. That was a horror story and i currently have an expensive phone that i have to keep on the charger. i actually purchased a universal charger from sprint that can be used in your car and/or in a wall socket to make certain I don't lose my charge. I think the phone is over priced for how it is operating for me. Sprint should provide an additional battery for the touch pro like they do for the Instinct. The should also include the universal charger in the box. The phone cost to much to not operate better. The sprint picture mail sucks, The sprint TV sucks, but the phone is really nice, if sprint can correct the issues mentioned.
I don't charge it at night cuz i don't like to "overcharge", so i usually charge it when i get home b4 I sleep. I have been considering getting an additional battery with a dedicated battery charger from HTC though. ever gave that a thought?
I seem to be having this same issue with my Fuze that I just got yesterday. After a full night on charger it's at 82%. I'm going to try it over usb on pc to see if it gets any higher otherwise I'll be taking it back to the store today.
The HTC touch pro (with factory ROM) is protected from overloading. Which means that overnight it will load for about 3 hours from an empty battery and then it is full (white light will go from sliding to full circle). After that the charging stops. Which means that if you sleep for 8 hours, the remaining 5 hours your phone will be using the battery.
Now the question remains, what is drianing your battery in 5 hours? The initial suspects are GPS (any GPS software should be cleared from memory, press the most right corner icon to see what's running), the wifi or the HSPA / 3G connection. Use comm manager to put those off.
Of course, the second option is that the charging is not happening because of a defect, in that case return it to the shop.
Pretty sure this is a common problem, I don't think returning the phone will solve a thing.
My phone does the same. Though if you charge it with the phone turned off, it charges fine. I purchased a separate charger and spare battery and just swap them over when I need to (1.5 days with moderate usage).
Pretty sure this is all down to the phone using more power than it should be, hopefully future rom updates will fix this. Even when using Tomtom in the car with the phone charging on a USB cigarette charge cable can't charge it - it actually has less charge at the end of a long journey.
Oh and I can also mention that I have the original HTC battery and two spare batteries (which look like copies with, the HTC sticker is there but not quite the same). The spare batteries act just the same as the original HTC battery.

[Q] Seidio 3200 mAh battery; Phone will not boot

I recently bought and finally received my brand new seidio battery for my nexus one. As soon as i tried to charge it however, I had issues. At first, the charge LED flashed orange and then green as if there was no battery in it at all. then after a while it finally started "charging" as indicated by the orange light. I left it overnight and most of today, more than 12 hours, and it still says it is charging. Even WORSE is that my phone won't even boot at this point, even though it has been "charging" for more than 12 hours. I have tried both a usb and wall charger, but the wall charger for 99.9% of the charge. Anyone heard of anything like this happening? I have searched for a while and found bubcus. Not even an FAQ from seidio or something.
That sounds like a shorted battery, probably blew a fuse in the Nexus motherboard.
That sucks and Seido does not cover damages caused by their products to the phones.
Bummer.
Well my phone still works just fine with the standard battery. It just won't boot with the extended one. guess I just have a lemon. Just wanted to confirm before I sent it back
Tell them they sent a faulty product and try to get a refund. Good luck

Chargins issue on NEW EVO SHIFT

My wife had a problem with the screen on her EVO SHIFT so she went to a sprint store and they ordered her a replacement phone. it came in on Friday. I have it rooted and running a custom rom and kernel. that part is OK. HOWEVER, it doesnt seem to charge. I have tried 5-6 different cables (AC Charger). It seems like it is charging and you can see the charge % go up SOME but it seems to never get past 50%. I also tried different batteries (I have 4 spare batteries). The Amber charger light is on and the phone says it is charging and connected to AC.
Any ideas what would be causing this? I thought about it being a bad charging port but it is showing connected and charging... Any help would be appreciated....

What ROM/Kernel are you running?
You might want to let the battery drain completely, then plug it in and see if a battery charges. If it does go to 100% (which it should), then thereafter, reset the Battery Stats.

Running Supreme Sense X with dodge kernel 1.6.. his evening I got it to charge to 100% and the green light came on.. took it upstairs and plugged it in after a few minutes... the light came on amber and it said it was charging but after about 2 minutes went off and was no longer charging.. I then pulled the charger out and pushed it back in and it started charging again. I giggled the cord and the light didnt go off.
HOWEVER... just went in and the light is green again.. picked up the phone and giggled the cord.. light when off.. then I unplugged the charger and plugged it back in.. now its amber again.. I wonder if it is the port.. this is a replacement phone we got from a service center that we had to wait over a week for. I would hate to have to un-root and take this back for a second time.. its a pain to unroot and then get a phone and have to downgrade and re-root.
Im reading that the EVO SHIFT has a LOT of bad charging ports.. is this true?

The EVO Shift does not have a history of Bad Charging ports. Because it's a Refurb, there may be a possibility of it. But it might also be that when you jiggle the USB Cord your momentarily interrupting the connection enough to make it think it's been Unplugged. Then the device detects that it's plugged in, it starts the charging process all over. Also as a built in safety most devices do not charge the Battery to 100%. What happens is the Battery is charged to a preset level. Usually between 95-98% , but it will register as 100% . This is to prevent overcharging of the Battery. That is why when you first unplug a device the battery appears to drop the first 1-5% very quickly. Then drain slower after that.

Thanks. I know all of this as I have a regular evo. The shift is my wife's. I don't believe what you are describing is the issue. Hmm

Do you have any other odd issues occurring? Did you do a Full Wipe before Flashing?
If you have another shift, check the battery in it. I've said before, and I'll say it again....some of these shifts end up with a bad sensor somewhere for the battery. GF has the same problem with hers, but when I use her battery, it's charged 100%. Phone needs to be replaced, or needs to be checked in hardware. It's not a rom isse, charging port issue, or anything else.
There are several chargers available at Amazon. Maybe this would be a good option for you. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_s...prefix=battery+charger+for+evo+shift,aps,1622

...pretty sure it's not the charger. The charger doesn't decide when the battery stops filling. Something isn't reading correctly. Maybe it's a system issue, something software but not the rom (like a faulty BIOS as opposed to the OS)
Sent from my PG06100 using xda premium
The charger can sometimes be an issue if it's not the Factory Charger, or a suitable replacement. I've seen several people run into issues by not using the correct charger. It is quite possible to damage the device, and the battery by not using the correct charger. Also some of the cheaper car chargers do not have an over-charge protector built in. While saying "over-charge protector" is a misnomer, what your actually trying to avoid is the battery continually trying to be charged when it's already charged. With some of the cheaper chargers it will cause the battery, and or the device to overheat.

[Q] slow charge, fast drain, hot batt, jb update

 Hi guys
I have a galaxy s relay 4g
It took 2 hours of constant usage, to kill the battery from 50 to 0%
Figuring this was normal, I was configuring everytthing while downloading 50apps over wifi
Note phone was on airplane mode, but wifi was on.
Next day I updated from stock ics to stock jb
Turned it on, it was at 91% and after 5 min of usage the phone said it was too hot to charge the bat.
Phone went from 91% charge down to dead with one hour of moderate usage and 2 hour siting idle on airplane mode, wifi on..
It was 46c on batt temp whole time
Charged for 3 hours from pc usb and it gained 3%.
Charged another 3 on wall socket that came with nokia lumia, rated at 1400mA.
Charged 15%
The battery info showed that even though the phone was off, it woke up many times during the night -- IT WAS OFF as in the battery with the 4 white circles on the bottom were showing!
Turned off, removed sdcard, factory reset (left sd out, its still out) i
Came back ok, it syned to google and reinstalled all my apps, then died again
I've tried 2 batteries, and 3 different chargers,
I factory reset the phone too.
Wake lock says the android system used 18% of the battery... other than that I can't see anything obviously wrong
Stock on any device is also resource hungry.... What are the specs of the chargers you are using...certain chargers will not put out the needed amount of ma or volts...which also messes with a Samsung battery overcharge feature
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Charger 1 is my pc usb port, which charged my other two phones (mytouch q by lg and sammy captivate glide) about 70% as fast as charger 2.
Charger 2 is what came with phone but doesn't appear oem. 5.7v at 600mA
Charger 3 is the oem charger which came with wifes lumia 925 which rates at 5v at 1400mA
Its "charging" in my car now, no sim card, wifi on and connected to a medium strength signal, 0% charged and I wached the voltage steadily decline as I hit refresh in the gsam battery monitor. Started at 3.3v and in a minute was at 3.18v. Still 0%
Car charger is a no name brand (which kept my captivate charged pretty well despite using gps at the end of my 6 hour drive the phone was still at 75%.)
The battery is samsung oem.
The first battery I tried is also samsung oem.
I also have a 5v 1amp charger that will fill both phones between 1 and 2 hours if memory serves, the 1.4 doesn't seem to go any faster as I guess the won draw much if any more than 1 amp.
Given all of the above I'm inclined to think its software or other hardware issue.... phone was sold as "seller refurbished" on ebay, but the description says its just an open box sale of a phone that came back within the first 7 days....and yes I bought a square trade warranty in case some BS like this happened.... but want to try and fix before going that route.
Is there no way to factory reset to the original ics firmware?
I see you also have a relay, once I get this all figured out id love to root and rom mine like you have yours!
I know the newer android roms have more features but are they more or less responsive in general?
Main reason I got a relay instead of another captivate glide is the relay has much more rom development.
And now the red charging led isn't even turning on..... I wonder if its defective.
Shame I can't return it now, the screen has light scratches (was in my pocket while I was working under my carL
And it was sold in like new condition
Grabbed a brand new USB cable plugged the phone into a 5th charger, oem HTC radar, 5v at 1amp
swapped the battery for the 1st one I had.
Appeared to charge fine. Pulled out the charge cord at 50%, plugged it right back in.... the battery charging screen went from about 50% down to 20% in 1 second.
Confused, I left it plugged in and went to bed.
Got up this morning and it was dead again.... while plugged in, while off, not even the charging led was on. switched to the 1.4A charger, still nothing... hit the home button a couple times and the thing woke up into the battery charging screen (it ignored the power button the whole time)
The gsam screen was even more interesting:
it doesn't show much but the line graph showed a rapid decline from 20% down to almost 0 from some short time before 3 am, then
3 hours from 3am to 6am, the charge went from near 0 to 50%, and then in half the time back down to near 0.
The temp graph wasn't a line, but fragments of one
does Gsam show the amperage of the draw or charge on yours? its only ever given my the voltage of the battery and shows 1mA on the bottom of the battery,
ebay seller says clean the charge port with alcohol.... not sure why someone should need to do that on a "like new" phone but I'll have to try and find something tiny to shove a paper towel in there with..... that would account for the not charging but not for the high drain.... could thins thing have a short someplace?
sounds to me like a defective device. the fact that you did a factory reset and it's still not charging even with it turned off is probably the biggest sign there. it can't be any apps you've installed because you wiped them all off. i think you've gone way above what should be normally expected of a customer in terms of troubleshooting your device. hairline scratches on the phone are fine. you should still be able to return/exchange it IMHO. especially with the squaretrade thing.
yes, it's possible to flash back to stock ICS but if it's not working with the factory rom (whether ics or jb) the phone obviously has issues.
i just bought mine a couple weeks ago too, though not over ebay. i found a local tmobile "authorized" store (advertising on craigslist) that was selling stuff with similar description - open item or customer purchased and returned within a week. i have used mine on all sorts of chargers without issue: a motorola dual-usb rated at 750ma in the car, a monoprice 2.1a charger built into the 10-outlet power strip at my desk, 2 different laptop usb ports, and a samsung wall charger rated at i think 1.8a which came with my wife's galaxy tab 2. i never ran stock rom for more than about a day or so, just to verify proper operation of the phone, and now i run cyanogenmod11. i can go all day on a charge with what i consider medium to semi-heavy usage, which i think is great.
for example, yesterday i unplugged at about 9am after an overnight charge (with the phone on - i almost never turn it off because i have to be able to receive on-call alert emails from work). i got the day started in the attic installing radiant barrier (so it was rather hot). i had the phone in my pocket streaming a shoutcast station over wifi for probably about 4 hours. later, i watched a 30 minute show on netflix (also wifi), played some wordfeud, surfed the net a bit, watched some youtube videos on fixing my weed eater, did a few emails for work, probably 20-30 texts and maybe 10 minutes worth of phone calls. by 11pm i was still around 30% charge remaining. at no time did i plug in my phone during the day.
i have an extended battery on its way from china, so i expect to be able to go 2 full days on a charge with similar usage. and the thicker back plate will make it easier to hold, since i have such long fingers.
tl;dr - you got a bad phone. exchange it.
