What are the boot loader files? (boot.bin and sbl.bin)
What do they actually do?
Are there any positives of having boot loader files?

In simple terms, a bootloader is the code that runs on a device before the os
starts up. Every time you start your phone the bootloader is telling your device what to do in order to get you to the home screen.
This process is vitally important

On our device, no
All roms use the same bootloader although there are updated bootloaders in some roms, but it wont be much of a difference
Flashing the isn't recommended because even a small interrupt in the process(powercut, windows/Odin crashing) will leave your device bricked
are there any good roms that are fully functional? i dont need experimental jellybean a nick slim optimized ics rom would be great.
There were good ROMs before boot loader was unlocked....

I am sorry I am new to samsung/odin devices. am i correct thinking that there is a kexec-CWR for the locked bootloader and a regular CWR for the unlocked bootloader? also does the fact that the bootloader is locked or unlocked matter which roms you can flash ie some roms can only be flashed with a locked bootloader and some can only be flashed with an unlocked bootloader. or can any rom can be flashed with any bootloader locked or unlocked.
I hope i am making sense.

most were made for the kexec route. if you have unlocked your bootloader.... you need to try and get a rom with the kexec part removed. like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788443

This is how I understand it:
Basically, when you start the phone it loads software.
If you cannot unlock the bootloader (the part that tells the phone what software to load) then you must find a different way to load a rom like CM9/10 which uses different kernels.
So kexec forces a load into the phones memory upon boot, which loads a kernel, which allows you to load something like CM9/10
Now we can just load the proper kernel and not use kexec.
CWR is just a recovery environment that allows for you to flash things to the phone. Kexec needs to run it each time the phone boots so as to load the required kernel but upon a reboot this data is dumped, and you must load it again when the phone restarts.
im sure there were good roms before. My point is that i am running a rooted unlocked bootloader phone, what are the good roms for my device.

i posted a link above to one.
yeah i checked that one out. im not ready to jump on that bandwagon just yet.its not polished enough. im just looking for an optimized stock rom
Any rom that was out before it was unlocked can still be used now. You could still use CM9/10 before last night.
Alright, so here's the issue. I tried to flash a version of CW onto my HDMaxx (XT926) and it failed, saying the file size was incorrect. Now, whenever I boot, it goes to the same recovery screen and says that the flash failed, even when I don't boot into recovery. After many failed attempts, I still cannot reflash the recovery. It still boots if I manually go into the bootloader and just select normal bootup, but as you can imagine, it gets pretty old having to do that. I just installed OTA JB yesterday, and it worked fine (after manually installing the zip myself) but the same problem still occurs on boot. Any help? Thanks in advance.

Reflash stock firmware. Check the stock firmware thread for your device in development subforum.
Its usually a good idea to flash to stock before upgrading os anyway.

you said HDMaxx? do you have a retail verizon razr hd? because clockwork is only for developer devices unlocked. and im pretty sure they dont have a developer Maxx HD
You need to successfully flash any of your partitions with a signed image in fast boot. Pick a small and relatively minor one like device tree.
The bootup error you are seeing means that an unsigned image was attempted to be flashed on a locked boot loader device and should go away once any properly signed image is flashed again afterwards. You could just flash the stock recovery image from the full XML fast boot file too.
The device should boot normally again thereafter.

No, It is an HDMaxx. It has the version XT926, but it is stock Verizon. Does anyone have any knowledge of a thread with an instructional for unlocking my bootloader and a clockwork/Amon Ra/etc. flash? I'm just struggling to find anything. Almost seems like very few people are working with my device as of this moment.

Verizon branded XT926 are bootloader locked, period. Verizon insisted it be that way. Since the HD Maxx doesn't have a developer's edition (which you can unlock the bootloader on), you are limited to hacks/workarounds that use a signed kernel to load a custom one. Check the Developers forum for hack posts.

Google safe strap for this device. We don't have clockwork on the consumer version but we do have safestrap which uses TWRP recovery. I use that to flash stuff. It's actually better because you leave your stock rom on the safe side and flash on the other partition and don't have to worry about bricking anything.

I did read up on TWRP a while ago. It kinda looked like a pain to me. I don't know, but I just want to be able to boot straight into my ROM of choice immediately without having to go through a bootloader (for someone other than myself, not in the knowing of what they're doing ICE). I used to have an N1 running CM7 and it was just what I wanted. Are there any downfalls of using this method that you have seen?
I have to sent in my A700 to Acer for repair because it won't charge anymore.
I flashed back to a full Stock ROM 4.1.1 (RV16RC01_EMEA_DE) but the problem is that I cannot re-lock the bootloader with fastboot oem lock (boot.img is not an official image)
I have NOT rooted or modified the ROM in any way.
So is there still a way to lock the bootloader??
I need to quickly find a solution because I only have 17% battery left.
No there is no way at this moment to relock the bootlader.
any experience that it will void the warrenty?
I'm not willing to pay over 100euros for repair just because there is an hardware failure that is not related to software.
Maybe you can flash an ICS stock FULL Rom, it will relock the bootloader (ics's one) and do not upgrade to JB( or your bootloader will be unlocked).
And then send your tab (with ICS) to repair
will do that.

yes I flashed an older ICS ROM.
Apperently its a beta but it worked.
nice
good tot know, thanks!
Warranty has nothing to uploading your own software or open bootloader unless acer proves that it was the cause of damage to the equipment.
I had a problem with the a210, and although it was open bootloader and uploaded custom ROM for the duration of the warranty.
ACER exchanged motherboard under warranty.
Any chance you could give a step by step for flashing the ICS full rom back?
I tried this but got stuck on the Iconia boot animation.

So i have a Droid Razr Maxx HD xt926
it is on the latest 4.2.1 ota
It was starting to run slow, so i figured it was time to root and get a custom rom. but what i didn't realize is you cant unlock boot-loader.
So i rooted the phone, no issues. i tried to flash TWRP and CWM and both failed.
So when i go to recovery all i get is a black screen with white writiing that says
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (s)
10.9B(#) (sha-1e9f, 2013-05-25 01:04:26)
eMMC info: Size 32GB
Divice is LOCKED, Status Code: 0
Battery OK
Connect USB
Data Cable
Failed to hab check for recovery: 0x56
Fastboot Reason: Boot Failure
I can exit out and get back to android.
Since i can get the bootloader unlocked (at least i dont think there is a way) i want to flash everything back to factory, it can be unrooted as well. just want a clean start on it.
any help would be great thanks.

If the bootloader is locked, it's highly unlikely that attempting to flash a recovery would've touched the stock recovery. With that being said, you can use one of the utilities to flash back to completely stock or use RSD and flash the most up-to-date XML from here:

I've never had to modify the XMLs to work in RSD, but you might have to for some of them. You can swap files in the utilities and put the newest update in there. Also, flashing your zip or any other zip should clear the flash fail.

boot the phone up (just power on), after on plug it into your pc, use the tool i posted in #5 (just going off what RikRong said, any successful flash should clear the failure) flash "stock recovery", let it reboot and see if its fixed.
if its not fixed, im still under the impression you will have to do one of 2 things to fix it from what i read others post previously,
-replace the files in matts utility with the latest ones from the stock files, or
-modify the xml file in the latest sbf to get rsd to work without failing

Already installed various recoveries only my device so enter the stock recovery, bootloader unlocked with this, I want to install cm10.1.3 4.2.2 and I can not, can someone help me?
My Droid Razr HD is doing the same thing
My screen says all of that also.
its says its locked and the battery is ok and all of that
I was trying to root my phone which was unsuccessful.
Now I cannot start and run my phone properly.
when it comes on it has me choose a language and press start and then acts like its loading and says it may take a few minutes. It will do that for hours and never move on to the next step.
How did you fix yours and recover it?
None of the other options on the reboot screen work...
I had tried:
normal start up
AP fast Boot
Recovery
BP Tools
They all lead to the same thing with the language selection and so on.
What can I do?

assuming you have a 926, re-flash it with this.
if you have a 925 do NOT use ^^ that. you will have to use rsd instead.
I am having a similar issue but my bootloader is unlocked and no matter what I flash to recovery recovery won't work anymore whether it being a factory reset or trying to just plain boot in to it.

on the bootloader screen it says "status code 3" correct?
you cant flash cwm or twrp with fastboot?
what exactly is it doing or not doing and does the flash dialog indicate it flashing ok?
you imply, you cant boot into recovery, then say a factory reset wont work. what happens exactly in either of those attempts?
after you flash a custom recovery, you have to power off the phone and boot right into it and flash the su zip (do not boot the system in between), you know that correct?
any other info you can provide that i may have left out could be helpfull in getting this working for you.
Hello everyone,
I know this tread is old but, I have a problem and I hope someone here can help me. I have a mot razr 926 with these specs:
android version 4.1.2;
System version 9.30.1.XT926.Verizon
Kernel 3.0.31 ( I believe is stock)
Build number 9.8.1Q-94-1
My phone was rooted before with stock rom; I had to do a factory reset; so I reset, rooted again and my mistake it was trying to unlock the bootloader ( I know, I know, it's 9.30....)
Now my problem is that I don't have "recovery" or I don't have access to it. Things that I have tried:
Moto utility 1.34
Moto utility 1.3 gpt fix
Razr HD Recovery flasher V7 (tried to install cwm and stock)
I'm just trying to get any recovery working.... any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Have you tried the stock recovery??, it can be tricky to get into stock recovery by pressing the correct combination of buttons
EDIT: You can use RSD Lite to update your phone to 182.46.10 and use Towelroot to re-root the phone. Once rooted, you can use Motoapocalypse to unlock bootloader.
