I can´t find any reason why man should backup a device just AFTER a hard reset. After a HR there aren´t any individual file to be backuped. So the only way to make sense would be to backup your personal data in order to hardreset your device and restore it afterwards.

Sorry...misunderstanding, i mean, i have a backupfile wich i want to restore, till now i always just run the backup restore without hardreset first. My question: is it better to hardreset first and then run the backup restore file?

they way i look at it is it doesn't matter.
run the backup. if things are weird, then hard reset and run it again. if things are goo, well you are done.

Restore Programs after ROM Upgrade

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone is familiar with a tool for backup of the installed programs before update and restore them on the new ROM? I tried with Sprite Backup, but than I had to hard reset because the device hang after Splash screen. Such a tool would save a lot of time. Greetings!
No No No No No No
The reason you should NOT restore after a flash is that any backup program (Sprite, SPB included) must by its nature backup things like registry and datbase files.
If you restore then you will overwrite the information that the very clever cookers have spent all of their time fixing to make the ROM stable.
Equally backing up PIM data (contacts, calendar, tasks etc) using this type of program and then restoring can cause problems. If you can - sync with PC first and resync after the update. Then you are guarenteed compatibiliy.
If you must backup on the PPC then use programs like SMSBackup and ContactsBackup. These export and import the data rather than taking a copy.
I know it is a pain and takes a long while but I strongly recommend reinstalling after an update.
If anybody knows of a tool that can automate the installation of a number of CABs please please let me know.

(stupid) question about backup and upgrading rom

heya,
i never tried yet but .... it would work if i first backup my phone with spritebackup (or anything else), then upgrade rom, then restore the backup ?
that's to avoid reinstalling all of my stuff (contacts,tomtom,etc..) every time .....
theoretically, it shouldnt work .... but anyone tried ?
thanks!

When you use SpriteBackup, it backs up your registry and many other core files also. New ROM upgrade could include fixes or newer drivers that may get overwritten when you restore your backup. So, for stability reasons, it's not recommended.
Best thing you can do is get PIM Backup and it will backup most of your messages/contacts and other stuff. There isnt a very good way to avoid having to reinstall applications though.

You can do it...
If you use sprite, you can safely restore if you use upgrade mode in the advanced options. It will restore your contacts, programs, etc. but will not overwrite any system or rom registry settings.

yea .. well, that is not really an "easy" way to backup and restore roms
Easiest way (that I have found), is to simply use a Backup tool like SPB Backup. I keep a backup of each ROM I might go back to (and keep the downloaded ROM as well). Of course I name the backup file appropriately so that I know which ROM it is from (e.g. Backup060108_Sleuth3.exe). That way if I need to restore, I can simply Flash back to that ROM, and then run my restore. This has worked in almost every case.

Unable to install any .cab files??

hi all,
i am having trouble installing any application (.cab) file on my device. have an imate ultimate 8502 wm6.0. basically, in the start i installed googlemaps and it worked fine. then i did another couple of apps, and then i dont know how, but all applications stopped working. i get the error about security certs. when i try to run them. so i uninstalled most of them , and now I cant install anything
everytime i try to run a cab file, if first confirms that its not from a certified publisher, but when i confirm to install, it always gives me the error message "Installation of " ***.cab " was unsuccessful". Would really appreciate your help here.

If you Have made any backup, try to restore that. I think that should solve the problem. Otherwise may be the system files may have become corrupted. Its a good idea to have hard reset infrequently, to have clean installs.
backup of what? device recovery you mean? would it be appropriate for the current scenario if i do a Master Clear and restore to factory defaults? plus, does it clean/ repair system files that may have been corrupted?
Thanks,

Backup of system and pim files. It is usually done by e,g spb backup or others. Yes if you do hard reset, it will bring the system to original factory level. Of coarse you will loose all data in ROM. So please backup your data to PC or memory card before hard reset.

[Q] Full wipe and full restore

Is there any way to make a full wipe amd next restore everything (widgets and others)?

Probably, but every time I tried it (with titanium backup) it made my device unusable. Only restore Apps (and their data) but not system. Unless someone can provide valid instructions... it's not a good idea to restore all system stuff. I never got my widgets back or anything, always had to redo that manually too.

Hmmm ok I forgot about system but it this is not important for me.
I would like to restore user apps and widgets (but I know that Titanium Backup can't do that)
So this is better idea?
I have hubs layout and this is a most important thing for me and I don't have enough time to make this again.
