Gtab wifi tether pairing... - G Tablet General

hello all, i briefly had a gtablet earlier in last month and liked what i saw before i returned it. I will be getting it again (trolling around for a good non-retail price thought) and can see myself using it when i go out of town. I have a blackberry as my main phone but was looking for a decently priced android phone i can root and slap a wifi tethering app to connect the gtab to the internet with. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.
forgot to add that, i'm on t-mobile 8)...

You can't wrong with the original Droid 1 and I'm sure they are cheap on ebay

I think your choice of carrier is probably more relevant. I'm really happy with my Droid X, and the Verizon coverage can't be beat, but it'll cost you...

I have a sprint palm pre that has been tweaked with the pre verizon hotspot app that works for me. not too fast but I can hold off on getting an evo until they get cheaper.

What would you do? Contracts, phones, cancellations, and ideologies.

Alright, need some outside opinions on this. I want a new phone.
Currently, I'm on Verizon with the Droid 1. Its an excellent phone, and its been a lot of fun modding it, etc. Sapphire and Cyanogenmod have been awesome ROMs.
I've been disgusted with Verizon's, and Motorola's, actions over the past few months. From Moto's locking the bootloads on the Droid 2 and Droid X, to the essentially forced loading of Big Red's VCAST App store to the Incredible. I fully expect Verizon to disconnect their future Android phones form the Android Market in favor of their own VCAST App Store. There's also their whole Bing deal. It wouldn't bother me if I was able to change it easily, but that's not the case without rooting. Verizon's been a control freak in the past, and unfortunately, it seems the Droid 1 is going to be the exception.
While trying to stream some Flash based episodes from the web, the Droid 1 choked bad, even when OC'd to 1Ghz. Min and Max. Shoot, even connected to a PC's USB for power, the battery still drained on the thing. I want something more powerful.
Unfortunately, I am still on contract with Verizon for another year, breaking it carries a 115 USD fee.
Here's my dilemma. I like T-Mobile's myTouch 4G. Now that its been permarooted, bloat can be removed, Genius button remapped, etc, its a very nice phone. I had wanted to pick up one under their Even More Plus plans, however, that made the price too rich for my blood at present. But, it seems TMO's phased those plans out. So, if I want the Glacier, its 199 for TMO.com or 49-79 from Wirefly/Amazon. At 80 dollars, with the free activation offered by Wirefly or Amazon, the price becomes much more attractive even with the ETF from Verizon.
TMO does have a live HSPA+ network in my area. Verizon's LTE network is supposed to go live in December. I've heard conflicting reports for the launch of their 4G phones, everything from January 2011 to 3Q 2011. While I'm sure these phones will be very powerful(Tegra?), how locked down and crippled will they be?
According to TMO's website, my current phone is portable to their network, so I wouldn't have to change my number.
What would you do? If I decide to cancel the Verizon contract, where do I begin? A call to Verizon to cancel? I haven't gone all the way to the checkout at Amazon or Wirefly, is there a form for porting the number? Whats the best way to handle this? Or just wait and continue to give Verizon money despite my conflicts with their ideologies?
Nothing? No opinions?
Bump again.
well i'll help a bit
you can call Tmobile and ask them to help you port the number to Tmobile, all you need is your account details, and then you talk to verizon to break the contract and pay ETF
2nd the droid is useless on tmobile as you know its cdma and tmobile is GSM
now the even more plus plan is there but you can only get in store or on phone its removed from the site to avoid confunsion
also amazon has a high ETF of $200 so if cancell the contract you have to pay the normal ETF + 200$
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I know the Droid is useless on Tmo, but I want something more powerful. The Moto Olympus and the LG Star look like powerful devices, but I'm sure the Moto will have the locked bootloader. No idea about the LG, blurrycam shows it running some UI overlay, not vanilla Android. Could change before release.
You bring up a good point on the Amazon ETF, double wammy. Wirefly is likely similar, and I definitely don't want to be in the same situation again in a year.
I guess my main concern is about the longevity of the Glacier? Or I could sit tight with the Droid for a while and get a Gtablet to satisfy my thirst.

That seems like a good idea. Have to look into it.

[Q] Upgrading with VZW, not sure what phone to get.

I'm currently at the end of my rope with my rooted Droid Eris... I've got Cyanogen 6 running on it, overclocked to 700mhz, but it's reeeeeeeally been getting on my nerves lately and I need a new phone.
None of VZW's choices really jump out at me, and I'm eligible to upgrade next Sunday. I was considering the Samsung Fascinate since it's A.) Free, B.) easy to root, and C.) not overkill for me. I don't need a 4g phone seeing as there's no 4g network in my area yet. I love Swype, I don't need a slide-out keyboard, so that cuts the Droid 3 BOGO offer out for me. Droid X2 looks okay, but there's no telling when Root will be available for that phone either. The Incredible 2 and Thunderbolt are insanely overpriced since they're $200 and $250 respectively, both have single cores, and barely more memory than the Fascinate, and the screens aren't as nice as the AMOLED. Only issue is VZW discontinued the Fascinate, not sure if I could get one off Amazon or not, but I doubt any Verizon store will have a new one, I don't want a refurb.
Anyone have any suggestions? My only requirements are < $200, no keyboard, rootable, and not an LG (everyone I know has had TERRIBLE luck with LG phones). I'd prefer a Samsung or HTC because Moto sucks at locking their phones down.
I have the incredible 2 and from what I hear the x2 handles dual core not well. I rooted my inc 2a soon as it came out and it came with froyo :/ there is the xtc clip method and soon htc might start unlocking bootloaders for it. It is single core but is mighty fast enough for me. I don't have 4G yet either so I didn't need it

[Resolved] [Q] Friend on Verizon needs already hackable phone ASAP

A friend who lives in Houston is going on a trip this Friday to Washington, DC. She wants to have tethering for her PowerBook and wireless-only iPad. She needs a small phone to take with her when she runs (she currently has such a phone). She is considering the "Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MiFiā„¢ 4510L". For family reasons she needs to stick with Verizon. Her husband has a Droid X, but she is slight so something smaller would be better but not required.
I told her an Android phone with Cyanogenmod 7 should let her tether and she shouldn't have to pay $20/month if she didn't abuse it. I'm on T-Mobile and get free tethering (came with phone).
As far as the small phone, since she can't just swap SIM cards, I suggested either a separate, very minimal plan for her small phone, or a pre-paid plan with either her current phone or some other small phone.
I looked at the CM7 site, Googled, searched this forum, and now I ask you (yes, you):
What would be your 2 top choices for a smart phone for her that meets her needs?
What kind of plan or arrangement would let her have a small, rarely used phone, preferably her current one?
How is Verizon about tethering? T-Mobile is generally fine if you don't abuse it.
[Edit: Friend got a T-Mobile 4G hotspot that allows ad hoc daily use.
I knew I wouldn't get answers unless I slightly personalized this for particular phones and posted it in the General forum for each of those phones, but I didn't feel like cheating ]

tablet with built in 3G vs tablet + hotspot

Hey guys.
I hate my cell phone bill and I'm doing away with voice and texting. I just don't use them. My concern is what the best way to do this is. I currently have a Nexus 7 8 gig that I like a lot. Of course there is no built in 3g. I have been using my Droid Charge as a hotspot and it works just fine for my needs.
But then I've also been looking at the Galaxy Tab 2 with built in 3g and that also looks like a good setup.
My questions are:
Which would be the less expensive way to go? I don't use much data while on the go, so 2-4 gigs a month is fine
Which would be more reliable?
Which is more hackable (I love me some customer ROMs!)
Which would you go with? I've already spent the money on the N7 but the cost of a G Tab would be roughly the same as a hotspot if I sell my N7.
Thoughts/comments/jokes about my mom are welcome.

I would expect the N7 to end up with more custom ROMs and other development, but then I've never looked in the G Tab forums. I love my N7 and so far haven't suffered for the lack of G3.
And you should be nicer about your mom!

3g Moto Xoom - how do I get 4g?

I bought the Moto Xoom from Verizon when it launched and never got around to sending it in for the upgrade. At the time our market was 3g and I was in no hurry but we were upgraded last year to 4g so I was hoping to get it done. How would I go about getting it upgraded to 4G LTE now? Done a quick search and didn't see anything.
Thanks!

Since the xoom has been discontinued for quite some time, i'ts going to be tough. Not really sure where you searched but found these two top results in google. There were many more how to's listed.
You're going to have to do it manually or pay some phone repair shop to do it for you.

It may be more cost-effective to buy a refurbished Xoom. I got one for my girlfriend last year on eBay for about $200; it had supposedly been used as an in-store display model, and it looks and works great.
You can find a very good teardown in ifixit.com. Buy the module on ebay, but i don't think that is a good idea, too much expensive for this old tablet.
