[Q] Is the ota only available in the states? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Going to get my grubby hands on the NS sometime next 2 weeks. I am not in the US. Would I be able to get the OTA? I guess the questions is the OTA device dependent or T-mobile dependent or location dependent?
Happy holidays guys

good question, the N1 seemed to have separate OTA packages

I have it with Mobilicity and I haven't received the update yet.

I'm in the uk. Upgraded yesterday and not received ota yet... including trying the "checkin" numerous times.
Not got the new market yet either.

I don't know for sure, but I would assume the answer would be yes.
Good news is that you can always manually update and that is a fairly straight forward process. See here for more information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884097

I'm in the UK and picked my SIM free NS up yesterday evening. I got the OTA within an hour of switching it on.

Turned my phone off for about 5-6 hours ( charging), booted and bam right there it popped up...

bought the phone in the US and I'm in Belgium (on Proximus) and I got the OTA yesterday evening.

Sweet, so I guess its device dependent, instead of country or service provider.. nice Thanks guys and happy holidays to all

I'm reconfirming it is not location or provider dependent.
I'm in Montreal on Videotron and I got the update this morning.

it's device ROM dependant not provider or location
they could, but at this stage i doubt they will enable IP filtering

Ahh, so how would google know to send the ota? Each time the rom is switched on, it sends a check update to google?

I'm on Wind in Toronto and when I did a checkin 2 days ago I had the update... didn't install it though, waited for Paul to stick it in the latest Modaco

I received it yesterday evening.

+ 1 to the auto-update. Once I had the NS linked to a WiFi connection, it asked to be updated. I'm in the southern UK.

I am extreeemely eager to get the nexus s - but I am based in Dubai.
Cud somebody please confirm if the update will be available regardless of country / location?
[or better still, if someone from the middle east has already gotten the update on their N-S?]
i am dying to get the NS and chuck my iPhone out the window...but i need a bit more confidence to jump on board and buy it esp. b/c it has not been released in this country...

I got the notification a few days back, in India.

I guess i could rename this thread to the non-us nexus S club I am in Brunei myself.. waiting on mom to arrive in 4 days from LA

[Q] Why no love for the 9020a?

So, I've been running 4.03 with the UCKF1 radio since December, but I'm really wanting a stock update from Google. Why haven't they released anything for the 9020a at all? It's just a different radio from the 9020T and now the 9020T has seen 2 ICS revisions, while if I chose to only use the official OTA process, I'd still be on GB. Is Google finally going to release something for the 9020a now?
I don't believe anyone here can answer you with 100% certainty.
I still believe however that if we didn't see a release, there's a reason. But people aren't too good at the waiting game.
I'm starting to think 9020A may not be a nexus.

Google is waiting for AT&T's approval before the i9020a release. At least that is what JBQ from Google implied today.

AT&T doesn't have anything to do with the software. They are just sent the ROMs for testing. Unless you are implying Google is adding it to Nexus devices?

At times like this I really do hate the North American carriers. I was pretty misinformed up to this point as to the nature of android updates on the nexus phones. I was always under this blissfully ignorant impression that it was fully under google's control to push updates at their sole discretion. Sort of like the advertising led me to believe.
So now that false belief has become painfully apparent to me, replaced with the knowledge that the carriers still have the ultimate say.
I doubt very much now that this update will be seen any time soon OTA in Canada if Telus has any say in the matter. Hopefully AT&T will authorize it soon so we can at least get a factory image we can flash ourselves.
Yes this wait is hella annoying especilly since i've been forced to use i9020t as base for mine but for those who are adventurous you can download the factory image for the i9020t from https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/soju-imm76d-factory-ca4ae9ee.tgz and slectively flash boot.img and system.img.
You just need to unlock bootloader (backup first it wipes device) download the archive, extract the boot.img and system.img and flash them.
The commands are:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img

Can't tell if trolling or not.....
What else is there that would require carrier approval?
Then again, perhaps the carriers selling the 9020A have been diligently testing a new radio file over the last three and a half months.

They need to test a new radio because the at&t radios are slow on 3g. I have to use the older kb3 radio just to get barely usable 3g speed

I made an XDA account just to comment on this issue.
When I bought my i9020a Nexus S from AT&T, I was under the impression that the only difference between this and the T-Mobile model was the radio/antenna. I was also under the impression that updates would be carrier-agnostic, since it is a Nexus device after all.
So why the hell does T-Mobile always get the updates instantly, seemingly not having to wait for approval? T-Mobile is a carrier just like AT&T, but it seems like T-Mobile users don't have to wait for carrier approval like we do on AT&T.
What is there to approve? Is approval from AT&T really necessary for changing the radio file?

You'll excuse carriers for not wanting to cripple their networks because some radios might be misbehaving...
Seriously, I don't get it. Why so impatient? Is anyone in a life or death situation regarding the ICS release?
Not too long ago, everyone found GB to be nice and dandy, now everyone wants to flee from it like the plague. The update will come in due time, and I for one largely prefer a polished version rather than one with issues.
So far the ICS release has seen enough bugs, some that even warranted a pull on the plug. I don't feel the rush to upgrade to something that won't work right...
My 2 cents
So all of us using a 9020a on a carrier other that AT&T are at the mercy of AT&T when it comes to updates on our Nexus phones? That wasn't what I signed up for when I chose a Google branded device on my Canadian carrier...

I don't think there would be as much outrage if ICS hadn't been released for any version of the Nexus S yet.
It's not that people are upset that they don't have ICS; they're upset because some versions of the Nexus S have gotten updates while theirs have not.
Google promoted the Nexus line of phones as getting updates "as soon as they are available," because the updates are independent of the carriers, since they're supposed to come directly from Google. People were sold on the promise that there wouldn't be several months of delays between new Android versions and Nexus phone updates because it was a "pure Google" phone.
The news that apparently the carriers need to "approve" Nexus builds before Google pushes them out flies in the face of what Google told people they were getting.
The T-Mobile Nexus S now has 4.0.4, and my AT&T Nexus S doesn't even have 2.3.6 yet. So much for always having the latest available version.
That's why people are upset.

The delay is probably not just AT&T. Canadian carriers are known for taking longer to test updates than even AT&T. Who exactly Google is waiting on right now is not exactly clear.

When will carrier locked devices get 4.2

It's been like 2 months since the update was rolling out. But i still didn't get it. I'm from the Philippines. Anyone know when the update will come internationally? Or at least when will carriers roll it out?
Sent from my HTC One SV using xda app-developers app
Update started rolling out on November, 4. So it's even not a full moth. I understand, everybody wants it, but nobody from us will know, when HTC gets the permission to start. This is not the fault of HTC, this is because of provider locked phones. Only after provider finished testing, they give their ok for release. And One SV is not in the top list of providers phone testing.
And you are not alone. Boost don't have it and a german provider also don't give it to their customers (4.1.2 where 2 months after first release).

You won't get OTA updates, I was in the same boat as you. Verizon even says you need an active Verizon sim card installed to receive the updates on their Pixel 2 web page for update info. I have the Verizon Pixel 2 with a Vodafone sim card in the EU. The only way you'll get updates is to download the OTA file yourself (you can get it from Google) and use ADB. I'm up to date now and there were no issues doing it that way.

Hi guys - currently it's not possible to get the pixel 2 in Ireland. I am going to New York and was thinking of buying the device straight from the Verizon store. From everything i've heard, it will work fine in the EU, also i'll save a little on the exchange rate (it comes in at around €700).
The updates thing is a major downside though - it's a good few months now since the last post on this - just wondering if anybody has had trouble downloading the updates directly from google?

It's working fine in Ireland with no problem and seems to be getting the updates also.

Anyone know anything about the T-Mobile / Sprint variant of the Tab S6 Android 10?!

Been trying to find something about this variant with no luck just got the April security update but no Android 10..
I have the T-Mobile variant (SM-T867U). I called T-Mobile and they could tell be nothing. I also read somewhere that the Verizon variant had the update rolling out maybe 2 weeks ago. It seems like the delay is with T-Mobile at this point. I also asked about being able to beta test and was told there's no option for customers to beta test with T-Mobile. Looks like we just have to wait and watch our toe nails grow.
Tmobile is always last to get any sort of update. We're usually last for updates on my S20U

I'm super annoyed with T-Mobile on this but saying they are always last is silly. It is such wide variance with literally every carrier. Sometimes T-Mobile seems on top of it and at other times it's ridiculously delayed. In the case of the Galaxy Tab devices, it's clear that Samsung barely keeps support going for each variant and T-Mobile has almost no focus on supporting them. That has been consistent for at least 2 years now and it has caused me to completely switch over to an iPad Pro.

This was a lie from support. They didn’t do anything whatsoever without giving you some sort of issue tracking number. They say all sorts of BS to appease customers

Yep. Kinda figured that. It was funny though. At first she was like," android 10 is the firmware on the device and was pushed out." Then when she checked again she was like, " sorry, Samsung hasn't pushed the update." Then in which I told her that wasn't true because it has been pushed and tmobile hasn't released it. Im just irritated that we pay 725 for it and its outdated. Tmobile shouldn't be doing that kind of crap.

Good evening. I’m trying to update my brand new phone I received today so I can switch away from my iPhone. I got 3 updates in and that was it. It will not detect any update past March. I cleared cache and do not have any apps installed other than what came in the phone. Does doing a full wipe help in this situation?

T-mobile has been having network issues for couple days so maybe wait little bit.
T-Mobile will always be behind, this is one of the main reasons for converting to International (Stable or Beta).
