Anyone get a text from ATT? - Captivate General

I recieved two duplicate texts at 1427 and 1342 Central time today stating "AT&T FREE MSG: AT&T is providing a free update for your phone. When asked to install the update, please select OK. Thank You." Just wondering if this is a fluke or if anyone else has experienced this today?

They happen all the time. It's the JH7 update. NOT Froyo. When Froyo drops we'll hear it here first. #whennewsbreakswefixit

O ok thanks for the info. This was just the first time I have ever seen this sort of text from ATT.

GPS OTA Fix Coming

I took the liberty of calling directly to Samsung this afternoon and spoke with a gentleman in their tech dept. They know all about the GPS issues and regret them deeply. They are in the process of releasing OTA fixes (he let this slip) beginning this coming Monday or earlier. It will come directly to the phone (OTA) with the option of installing now or later. He said within three weeks this will be fixed worldwide. It will not be a long running problem as they want everyone to get what they paid for (his words). He made me well aware that they have the difficulty recognized and under control. I hung up well assured.
Glad to hear this, but I'll believe it when I see it.
thanks, but until I see it, I dont believe reps unless it comes in a press release
Very happy to hear this. I emailed samsung support earlier over the weekend, if I get an answer I'll be sure to post it here.

No way... an AT&T tech manager told me they have received no fix from Samsung yet. They would have to test the fix them selves before it was allowed as an OTA update. No way it will be here by Monday...
just wondering does rooting your phone stop OTA fixes, or will I still receive the message?

Here is the email response I received yesterday from Samsung after writing them about the GPS issue -- certainly no indication that they are on top of the problem:
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand your distress concerning the GPS feature of your Samsung Captivate (SGH-I897). We recommend obtaining the initial lock while outdoors in clear view of the sky.
You can also try this steps:
You must select Settings > Location and security > Use wireless networks or Use GPS satellites.
We will forward your report of this behavior along to the appropriate parties for additional review and consideration. Please bear in mind that network features, to include the GPS functionality, are best supported by your service provider. We recommend contacting an at&t Customer Service Representative to confirm that there are no service issues that may be affecting your handset.
Phone: 1-888-333-6651
We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Should you also desire additional assistance resolving this, we invite you to call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357 between the hours 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Time.

I've gotten the same response.
Need to make up their minds.
GPS is a "network issue"?
Did the email really say that GPS was a network issue to be handled by our service provider? It's not a phone hardware issue? Well crap, I guess I'll have to call my GPS service provider.
Now where did I leave that main number for the US Air Force?
Me: "Hello Air Force, please fix my phone. Apparently there's a problem with your multi-billion dollar GPS constellation that's causing my consumer electronics device to malfunction."
AF: "Who is this?"
Me: "I have a Samsung Galaxy S phone and I demand you make it work!"
AF: "<inaudible> never should have turned off selective availability."
<click>
Another bogus "I talked to Samsung and the fix is on the way post"
From my Samsung Captivate
I received the exact canned GPS e-mail that the others received in this thread.
I wrote them back this:
Wow, thanks for taking almost a week to provide an entirely useless reply. And thanks for not actually reading what I wrote, because you told me to use 'use wireless networks' and in my original question I actually said I've used both options. Good job Samsung. That gives me a ton of confidence.
And I, nearly immediately, received this response:
Dear Brandon,
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand your distress concerning the behavior being experienced with your Captivate. Since you've already tried troubleshooting the device but still did not work, we recommend you to call us about this issue so that our technical support agents can attend to your concern. We are committed to your satisfaction and would like to assist you in finding a resolution to this issue.
Please contact us anytime, as we would be happy to provide additional information. Useless!
Everyone should call whenever they can get a couple minutes and complain about the lack of communication regarding this and when to expect the 2.2 update and the GPS issue.
My GF received an OTA update today on her Captivate and her GPS locks fast and holds the lock now. It was worse than mine by a long shot before. I haven't seen anything on mine as I was using my N1 all day today. Just lit it up now so I'll wait to see if I get one as well.

doubt it. i just checked for a software update and received none.
Anyone else getting an OTA update?
I literally just walked in the door from returning it after getting an absolutely disgraceful chat session with their tech support asking me if I tried things like turning the phone on and off.
I really liked the phone, but I didn't want to get stuck without workable GPS, especially since their acknowledgement of the problem is the semi-acknowledgement of, "that under certain conditions, the GPS on our U.S. Galaxy S devices may not be meeting performance expectations," as seen in places like on the Others tab of the SamsungGalaxyS Facebook page.
If OTA updates are rolling out, I'll go re-buy it. I figured they would just roll it into the Froyo update rather than take resources away from that effort for a one-off patch.
For those wondering, the AT&T rep I spoke to was aware of the GPS issue but tried to downplay it saying it doesn't matter to most people and tried to charge me the restocking fee, saying they charge it every time unless a phone is DOA but she'd be happy to exchange the unit for me. I calmly explained that GPS is a key feature for me (I travel a lot for work), and that feature is DOA and known to be so. Rather than cycle me through exchanges that would use up store stock of good phones that other customers may be perfectly happy with, it would be better for both of us just to not charge me the re-stocking fee and call it done. She got the manager's approval, and that was that, so kudos to them for being reasonable.
I do still like the phone though. If there's more confirmed reports of a fix and folks saying it works, I'll be back there the next morning to get it back.

I havent received an update yet. But I'm rooted, so I dont know if that would stop me from receiving the update or not.
Samsung did post on their twitter account the other day that they are aware and are currently working on a GPS fix. So, however long that takes remains to be seen. They have zero credibility when it comes to putting out software fixes and updates. I'm going to stick it out for the full 30 days and if nothing then return it for an iphone4. Between the GPS being absolutely useless to the 12 hour battery life, I'll have to say that this phone is less than spectacular.
May have been a false alarm unfortunately. I think it might have ben a gps test app update. Hers locks almost as fast as my nexus one now though so I'm confused. Sorry if it turns out to be bogus everyone.

That's what I want to know. I don't know how this can be a software problem, when multiple apps can't use it correctly
Guys it may have been bogus and just a gps app update. If that's the case then I apologize. Its locking about as fast as my nexus one all of a sudden so I thought it was legit. If that's the case I don't want to get anyones hopes up cause ill feel like a tool.

Worth a shot but getting a text bounce back doesn't really mean much. Either they will extend it to all customers who send the "yes" text or they will filter out anyone not on a iPhone plan before they batch apply the non-recurring credit to their billing system.
Go figure, a 1000 minute freebie and no update to Froyo.

Cellular South Questions

Hey everyone,
I am one of the device specialists for Cellular South. I don't do any kind of development work, but I will be happy to contribute in any way I can. If anybody has any Cellular South specific questions I'll be glad offer any answers I can. Also, any inside info I get on release dates or anything that may be of interest I'll share that as well.
We are in desperate need of a factory odin flash for the showcase.

Welcome to XDA, and ditto to what he said above...
You can see my thread where I'm trying to make one (or as close as one as possible) but it would really BE GREAT to have one like every other Carrier has
I will send an email up to see what I can get. Nobody will be in until Monday so I'll keep you posted. I am not here to represent cellular south in anyway and I doubt they would recommend any modifications at all to the showcase. I am just letting you guys know my position and may have access to things that could help advancement and would like to contribute if possible.

2nd. do you have the ability to activate unlocked CDMA phones , not purchased @ cell south. (thunderbolt looks tasty!!)

They have not released a date for the 2.2 nor have they shared any other information with employees. From what I understand most of the wait comes from Samsung's end. Unfortunately since we are so small compared to others we tend to be the last carrier the suppliers worry about. We had the same issues with the HTC Hero. Also, with the Hero they went through several versions of 2.1 before they got to one that worked even semi stable and it was released and then a better 2.1 was released a couple months later so if they have a version that they are even testing yet then it honestly probably sucks. 2nd, I do not have the ability to activate unlocked CDMA phones. Cellular South's system uses a method to activate phones that also searches their full inventory. So... If the ESN or MEID hasn't been in Cellular South's inventory at some point in time, the system will reject it and you can't program it. Does it suck? Yes. However, they are supposed to be putting in a new POS system in the next few months. I doubt the conditions change but if for any reason they do I'll let everyone know.

Regarding the LGP999DWP and 2.3.3

So, as any of us DWP owners know, the LG update tool doesn't seem to work.
Once T-Mobile officially announced 2.3.3 for the G2x though, I decided to check out there page for it. In the page they link to a LG page which then tells you how to manually update your phone to the official update. So I tried opening the update tool and yet again, I cannot update my device.
I had decided to talk to LG about this, they said it would be best for me to wait for the OTA or talk to T-Mobile, the reasoning is that since the tool seems to have issues with the DWP's, it would make more sense to get it from the carrier. In other words, they want to avoid liability if anything went wrong. No problem, though I wish I would've kept a transcript of that conversation too.
So I contacted T-Mobile's online chat next. Here is that conversation:
You have been connected to _Kimberly H.
ME: I'm having trouble updating my G2x to gingerbread, saw T-Mobile's tweet and followed the link to LG's site to update manually. HOwever, it says my model is a LGP999DW-P and the update is only for the LGP999DW. Is this going to be a problem for me to receive the over the air update as well? I've already tried running *#*#checkin#*#* and checking through the system for an update and haven't found anything.
_Kimberly H: Hi David , welcome to T-Mobile live Chat. I’m _Kimberly and I will be happy to assist you. Please give me a moment to review your question.
ME: No problem
_Kimberly H: I definetely know how important it is to get this issue resolved. Please allow me 2-3 minutes to pull up your account.I definetely will look into getting this fixed for you.
_Kimberly H: Can you give me that link?
ME: To LG's site?
ME: Here's T-Mobile's posting about the update
ME: http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/2462?tstart=0
_Kimberly H: Thanks.
ME: which leads here about the update
ME: http://wwwstg.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/G2X-Driver/index.jsp
_Kimberly H: One moment please.
_Kimberly H: The releases are staggered they are going to be an over the air update that will come to your phone.
_Kimberly H: They began sending them July 25th.
ME: Yes, I saw that in the posting, but that doesn't seem to answer if the update will be compatible with my model. It's the same update that T-Mobile linked to to get manually through LG, and my phone doesn't seem to be compatible, that's my worry
ME: I had talked to LG's support earlier, seeing as how they're the manufacturer and develop the updates. They in turn told me to talk to you guys.
_Kimberly H: Yes our enginers work with Lg to get the software updates taken care of.
_Kimberly H: engineers..sorry typo e sticks...
_Kimberly H: That is all the information that we have at the moment.

very useful, thanks bro!
No problem, just trying to help, and from the looks of it, neither LG or T-Mobile can confirm that the DWP will be receiving the update.
Hey man, I'm pretty sure DWPs will get the OTA update, its just lgs update tool sucks. I spoke with a rep from lg and they said they're engineers on working on fixing the tool. So were gonna get the update.
I just got off the phone with a rep. He said he thinks the dwp will also get the update, saying 't mobile wouldn't do that to their customers' but he also sounded pretty clueless.

It will get updated to gingerbread at some point, but nobody knows when.
Most of us guessed towards the end of September(about a month after the EP1W GB leak was released publicly)
Here's a fact: Nobody knows exactly when it is coming out. Even the support people at Verizon don't know. They are notified that something is on the way, but they don't tell them until it actually hits the streets.
My opinion, based on info i've gained reading various sources: It should be soon, probably in the next couple weeks. And it won't be EP1W.
I had a brief twitter conversation with p3 a couple days back, asking him if he had heard anything since the leak was released. He didn't offer any info on ETA, but DID say that he knows EP1W is no longer official...in his words, they "blew past" EP1W
This could be good, as personally I consider EP1W rather unstable (in my personal experience) and would love it if the final, official GB release is being developed further to deal with those kinds of issues. But... this could also add significant time to the release cycle as well.

On two different occasions with two different people at the Verizon store i was told with authority to expect an update this month (sept). We will see. I tried checking for software updates on the verizon site but it wouldn't let me enter my model, which was strange. I know only the owner's manual was on there but maybe they're getting ready to add something.
I meant the Samsung page- sorry!
When is gingerbread coming to the charge? Not happy with buggy froyo.

This is a standard, canned response and means absolutely nothing. Believe me, there is NOTHING to be gleaned by reading this.
Guy at Costco Verizon booth yesterday also told me this month. Also checked out the Bionic...ugly.

While not exactly "official", you have some awesome update options available right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259858, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1270987
yeah my understanding is there are at least 2 newer versions out beside EP1W. Guess they are still tweaking it a ton. I would have thought we would have it by now, but patience is a virtue I guess.
I would rather wait and get it right, then get it an have it suck.

Well, I for one can say that the Humble ROMs from danalo have been faster and more battery efficient than the stock ROMs from Samsung. So, I would be willing to bet that the Humble ROMs available now are going to be better than whatever Samsung has for the next "official" release.
That is, until Cyanogen starts his development job at Samsung, and gets some really awesome CM-like stuff incorporated into the stock Sammy ROMs.
Should be by the end of the month like the thunderbolt update.can't wait!

The guys at the Costco booth don't work for Verizon for once. The one's at my Costco are incompetent and seem to give two ****s about their job or helping the customer. I would HIGHLY recommend taking anything they tell you with a grain of salt. I find it very hard to believe they would have any true insider information on this.
Anything the guys at the booth are telling you is hogwash. They are just repeating something a co-worker or customer told them. Verizon does not provide those details to salespeople. Even the tech support people only have vague info like "coming soon", or maaaaaaybe a "this month". You can't miss target dates that you never announce in the first place.
VZ's own techs don't know when the update is coming.
I am friends with a tech at one of the local VZ stores & he has no more idea when it's coming than we do.

Exactly right. Verizon does not tell them. Truth be told, most of these guys find out about the software updates when a customer brings in their phone because of a problem the update caused.
Well. I have been using humblecomb and i so far love the rom.
