I've got a HTC Legend and have been looking around at guides on rooting/custom ROMS etc. I've got some questions, most are probably not device-specific.
1. From the Modaco Legend Rooting Guide:
The root process will...
flash your device with a new, generic 1.31 series based ROM that has Superuser access
Click to collapse
Is it possible to keep the ROM I currently have (stock HTC Sense), but just have it rooted? (So I can do backup before flashing new ROM) Or does rooting have to involve flashing a new 'rooted' ROM and loosing everything you had before?
2. Also from that guide:
The root process will NOT...
enable you to flash your device with a custom recovery image that can be launched easily by just holding down the volume down button when powering on
enable you to have write access to the /system partition in normal use of the device
Click to collapse
Then how do I get a custom recovery so I can do NANDROID backups? Because the Modaco custom Froyo ROM says it requires a custom recovery (Clockwork) while the Modaco rooting guide says it doesn't let you flash one..
Or how do I get write access to /system? is this necessary for some features of root?
3. With Modaco custom Foroy ROM:
Based on the 3.14.161.1 Froyo release
Click to collapse
Whereas other ROMS:
[ROM] Stock FroYo, based on WWE 3.15.405.3, rooted
Click to collapse
[ROM] B 0.1 (based on stock HTC FroYo WWE 3.15.405.3)
Click to collapse
Is there any noticeable difference between 3.14 and 3.15?
4. Modaco Custom Ingredients for Online Kitchen allows you to put stuff into /data, /system.
Can this be done later anyway? (pushing files there through ADB)
Are there any advantages to having apps installed here? (e.g. if I want to use Launcher Pro as default launcher and not stock, Handcent instead of Messages etc, does it provide any performance advantages? And how would links to market etc for updating work with this?
Thanks for any help!

Yes you can keep your rom after rooting, its not needed to change your rom

You can get rom manager from the market and flash clockwork recovery

3.15 may be a bit faster, but you may not be able to notice the difference
Thanks for the quick reply.

How do I do this? in the rooting guide it says:

so how do I root without flashing a new ROM? it also says in the guide:
Note: This process will wipe your device and there is currently no option to backup your device ROM before you start.

So maybe it is not possible for Legend?
You can get rom manager from the market and flash clockwork recovery

I found a rom for the NS, based on build GRI40, rooted, deodexed etc, downloaded the zip file and now I have a problem. I'm running stock rom at the moment and from what I've read so far, I should be able to put the zip file on the usb drive, boot into recovery and simply select the new rom.
Is this accurate? Would my phone be rooted after this, even though the bootloader wasn't unlocked prior to this operation? Thanks and sorry for being a noob

Oh I thought there was a way to get pass the root procedure. Thank you for clearing things up for me.
You don't need root to flash custom roms. Just an unlocked bootloader (and a custom recovery if you flash unsigned roms).

So here's the deal. I'm running CM9Alpha13. And while I love having my phone rooted and playing around with it, I was really only interested in getting ICS for my phone. No I know I'll miss Francisco.Franco's kernels and I'll miss Koush's awesome ROMs but I just really want a stable ICS.
So my question is how long before I can root my ICS if I do the official downgrade to GB and Upgrade to ICS?
Any guestimate would be great!
Thanks in advance.
Jon
I am sure it wont take long...just give the devs a day or so to play with things and get everything worked out.

Confirmed that this worked on Google issued phone (same as T-Mobile version). The following is the order I used to come from CM9 Alpha 11:
1. Backup using Titanium, reboot to recovery.
2. Use CWM to flash stock 2.3.6.
3. Use CWM to flash stock ICS 4.0.3.
4. Wipe all user data.
5. Install the linked superuser through CWM (I had previous tried older and newer versions, which did not work).
6. Reboot phone, go through setup, download Titanium, and restore. Phone is definitely rooted (otherwise Titanium is unusable). I did not try to update the su binaries and will avoid doing so.
any way to root with something like superoneclick?

Then fastboot boot recovery and flash the latest su zip. Even if you flashed the custom recovery it would be overwritten when you boot up the os.
This is my first attempt at rooting. The device is a Nexus S (original edition), I just wanted the warranty to expire before I dabbled in this.
So, which method is the best/most current? I've found a lot of tutorials, but I haven't been keeping up to know what the best one is right now.
I'm also still on Gingerbread. Do I need to update to ICS/JB before I root? I plan on running a custom ROM (CM10) on the phone so I'm guessing I don't need to worry about what version I have when I root?

This is basically my preference, too. Make sure you use superuser or supersu (my personal preference) for jb.

You don't need to update to JB to root but in my opinion you need to update to have a better battery life and to have all new features of JB (butter etc) anyway if you want to use CM10 consider that a lot of custom rom already have root by default.
Consider that you don't need to root to flash a rom, you need root to use root app when you already are in android, so if your purpose is just to flash a new rom, follow the seibott indications without think on how to root.
To flash a rom usually you need just to unlock bootloader and flash a costom recovery, anyway you can find a guide in every rom threads.
Anyway if you want a tool that help you to install driver, flash a partition, root, or just use a temporary custom recovery whitout flash if (for example with this toolkit you can unlock your bootloader, restart your phone in temporary cwm or twrp, flash superuser/supersu to root and come back to your custom recovery rooted and without other modifications) you can read these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984858
Consider that this is not a "one click" tool, its a toolkit with a lot of options and features (driver installation tutorial, backup, back to stock, flash a singular partition etc..).
Before learn to use ADB/fastboot commands I started with this toolkit.
Since this your first time rooting i would suggest you use one click root tools..
when i was rooting my phone the first time i tried many of the one click softwares but most of them didn't work.
and finally i got to this forum and found this toolkit ..

Hello all, I have got my hands on a HTC Sensation and wish to use this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2115520 , but I'm curious as to what I need.
The Sensation currently runs the stock HTC ICS (and thus I'm guessing has the necessary Radio roms and firmware, and such for ICS).

Hi,
I was only asking,so that I give you the necessary information for your next step...
So, can I assume that you are s-on?
Look HERE
You need to be dev unlocked, and have 4 EXT recovery installed.
Then, follow the thread to use "Smartflash" option to install custom ROMS like albinoman's.
Also, before installation, back up your stuff.
Use the "Format all partitions except sd card" in 4EXT recovery,in order to clean your phone and prepare it for a new ROM.

Ta, one last thing:
Should I do this from a vanilla, locked factory phone, or must I still go about rooting first?
And, would I still need Clockworkmod or does EXT4 replace that?

Yes , CWM gets replaced by 4 EXT (not EXT4......2 different things )

Hi,
Yes.
Once you get 4EXT recovery on your phone,go to the "Backup and Restore" option.
Make a nandroid(Backup),of your ROM.
Save that to your PC.
You can restore that if it all goes pear-shaped.
Read the thread carefully first.
It is all very well set out, and easy to follow.
You can also flash a stock ROM,but the nandroid is the best safety net.
Thanks so much

Hi,
No problem.
Just so that you know, there is a Dedicated Help Thread for the albino ROM.
In case you run into problems ,once you have the ROM installed.
Hi all,
I have searched the web, but haven't found an exact answer to my question.
I have a Nexus 5, currently on 4.4.2 (KOT49H). I am unlocked, rooted + Xposed and have TWRP. I want to update to 4.4.4 preferably OTA, officially. I would like to be able to use OTA updates from now on if possible.
Currently, if I disable Xposed, and use Suvival Mode in SuperSU and try to install the OTA update, TWRP intervenes and doesn't let me.
I would like to replace TWRP with the stock recovery so I can update OTA in the future. I don't want to wipe the phone to achieve this if possible. If this isn't possible, could someone step through how to update to 4.4.4 with TWRP installed — I'm on a mac also.

OTA is the least compatible and hardest way to update. Why do you want to use this method? It's the worst option available to you.

Because it would seem easier for me—AFAIK. Although this didn't work, this workflow sounds appealing to me every time an update comes out:
- Disable Xposed
- Enable Survival Mode in SuperSU
- Install OTA update
- Re-enable Xposed, done.
No USB, no computer, no terminal.
Is there another way to achieve this?

Running a rooting rom without a custom recovery is dangerous IMHO.
Without having to lose custom recovery
1) Download latest rooted stock ROM
2) Flash
3) Enable Xposed

Yes, whenever there is a new stock ROM, someone makes a rooted stock flashable zip of it. Also if you make any small changes to system, sometimes like adblocking, OTA will fail but flashable zip of rom will just override all that bs.
latest 4.4.4 rooted stock rom is in a thread which you can find i the resources section of the sticky-roll-up thread. You can get there via my signature.
That way, you can take a nandroid backup so if anything goes wrong after the update, you can do a full restore, where as with OTA you will not be able to with stock recovery.

Yep it's all good. For some reason, I had this little fear of the fact it's an official stock rom, that's been "toyed" with. But of course that makes no sense really, considering I'm willing to install many third party apps and processes that could easily alter/mess my phone up.
Do the rooted stock roms get released fairly rapidly after the official one is released?
