Noob Rooting Question - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first attempt at rooting. The device is a Nexus S (original edition), I just wanted the warranty to expire before I dabbled in this.
So, which method is the best/most current? I've found a lot of tutorials, but I haven't been keeping up to know what the best one is right now.
I'm also still on Gingerbread. Do I need to update to ICS/JB before I root? I plan on running a custom ROM (CM10) on the phone so I'm guessing I don't need to worry about what version I have when I root?

• Unlock bootloader
• Flash clockwork recovery
• Flash any Rom that you want.
• Flash gapps, enjoy.
That's just a crude way of saying it but you get the idea.

This is basically my preference, too. Make sure you use superuser or supersu (my personal preference) for jb.

You don't need to update to JB to root but in my opinion you need to update to have a better battery life and to have all new features of JB (butter etc) anyway if you want to use CM10 consider that a lot of custom rom already have root by default.
Consider that you don't need to root to flash a rom, you need root to use root app when you already are in android, so if your purpose is just to flash a new rom, follow the seibott indications without think on how to root.
To flash a rom usually you need just to unlock bootloader and flash a costom recovery, anyway you can find a guide in every rom threads.
Anyway if you want a tool that help you to install driver, flash a partition, root, or just use a temporary custom recovery whitout flash if (for example with this toolkit you can unlock your bootloader, restart your phone in temporary cwm or twrp, flash superuser/supersu to root and come back to your custom recovery rooted and without other modifications) you can read these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984858
Consider that this is not a "one click" tool, its a toolkit with a lot of options and features (driver installation tutorial, backup, back to stock, flash a singular partition etc..).
Before learn to use ADB/fastboot commands I started with this toolkit.

Since this your first time rooting i would suggest you use one click root tools..
when i was rooting my phone the first time i tried many of the one click softwares but most of them didn't work.
and finally i got to this forum and found this toolkit ..
here is the link... give it a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672708

How Long Will a Root for ICS OFFICIAL Take

So here's the deal. I'm running CM9Alpha13. And while I love having my phone rooted and playing around with it, I was really only interested in getting ICS for my phone. No I know I'll miss Francisco.Franco's kernels and I'll miss Koush's awesome ROMs but I just really want a stable ICS.
So my question is how long before I can root my ICS if I do the official downgrade to GB and Upgrade to ICS?
Any guestimate would be great!
Thanks in advance.
Jon
I am sure it wont take long...just give the devs a day or so to play with things and get everything worked out.

Confirmed that this worked on Google issued phone (same as T-Mobile version). The following is the order I used to come from CM9 Alpha 11:
1. Backup using Titanium, reboot to recovery.
2. Use CWM to flash stock 2.3.6.
3. Use CWM to flash stock ICS 4.0.3.
4. Wipe all user data.
5. Install the linked superuser through CWM (I had previous tried older and newer versions, which did not work).
6. Reboot phone, go through setup, download Titanium, and restore. Phone is definitely rooted (otherwise Titanium is unusable). I did not try to update the su binaries and will avoid doing so.
any way to root with something like superoneclick?
I'd like to avoid flashing custom stuff on it. just need root.

Then fastboot boot recovery and flash the latest su zip. Even if you flashed the custom recovery it would be overwritten when you boot up the os.

[Q] How to unlock bootloader?

Rooting a friend's device. Since my GS3's bootloader was unlocked... I'm a little puzzled with this one. How do I do it exactly? I tried reading about it but the guides on youtube/google didn't provide enough good feedback. I know you have to install drivers and such but could some one please link me to this stuff? Many thanks.

This guide works well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545 oldy but still great.
Just use a newer Clockworkmod http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
and super user http://androidsu.com/superuser or SuperSU http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 (my fav)
The hardest part is PART 1. Many have issues with Device Manager and getting the computer to read your phone properly.

Use this guide for the drivers if necessary also

I suggest to you to use the Nexus Root Toolkit that helps you very well with unlocking bootloader, rooting the smartphone with or without recovery and flashing new ROMs

Just do it the original way and the RIGHT way. No 1 click crap. This way is the Nexus way and the way that you will learn. Adb is important and may be needed later so learn it now. Fastboot is needed if you ever want to flash factory to update, see if it is a ROM issue or a hardware, etc.

can I install a custom rom with unlocked bootloader?[SOLVED]

hi, I just got an unlocked htc inspire and I would like to know if there is any way to install a custom rom without root access. I tried to root it with several tools including the Easy Ace Root Tool and I can't get it rooted. tried from windows with several tools and from linux too with no success. I have rooted other phones in a few minutes ; but for some unknow reason I can't root this one. the bootloader is already unlocked (is has a big pink "unlocked" at the top of the bootloader) and it has also cwm v 5.x... installed. I was thinking of wiping all data and install a custom rom from the sd card, after all I guess I don't need su privileges from the bootloader. but I have found some threads where people who has done it, get stuck on htc screen at boot. so at this point I don't know what to do. any suggestion?
When flashing a ROM on a phone with an unlocked bootloader, you need to flash it in recovery, then fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip.

should I wipe all data first?
then fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip.

would you mind to break that down in steps so I can understand it?

Yes I did. I searched for Ace Think Tank and found this good thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31211732&postcount=396&nocache=1&z=8270731476524836
but for some reason it didn't work for me. When it started the 4ext Touch Recovery flashing, it stopped with an error. I guess it was in conflict with CWM which I had installed, I am not sure. But he also explains on his post that the "recommended way" is to flash it with the Advanced Ace Hack Kit; but first you need to get the bootloader locked back. That was what I was trying to avoid but since I had no option I used Easy Ace Root Tool to lock the bootloader (Option 5). Then I downloaded AAHK(the last version I could find googling) and I finally got the phone rooted and installed a custom rom. Here are the links for the tools I used:

In Dying Need of Help

I seriously hope that someone can help me. I have been trying to root and update my HTC Inspire for four days now and have not had ANY luck. I have watched every single youtube video, read countless threads, visited numerous websites and I have not had any luck. I REALLY want to update my phone to ICS and eveything I have searched tells me I have to root it first. Obviously this is my first time rooting and I am not having any luck. I have Jailbroke countless iPhones with ease but rooting is so much more complicated to me. Does anyone have any info to help me out? Links? Step-by-step instructions? ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if I have tried the Ace Think Tank. I have managed to Unlock my Bootloader and download CWM. Through CWM I downloaded and installed this ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810461
But its NOT ICS which is what I'm wanting to do.
As for the methods I have tried they are:
Ace Advanced Hack Kit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377905
Poot
And a few more I am unable to think of.
It took me forever just to learn how to install CWM but through Ace Hack Kit I was able to by going into options.
I've also had the issue of my computer not reading my phone while it was in HBoot mode or recovery mode.
So thats where I am now and I now I am trying to upgrade to ICS.
Darn I'm rusty. Do you have whatchamacallit installed on your computer? Adb.... Phew, took me a bit to remember that

Okay, you need some clarification.
AAHK1 is retired and unsupported. It won't work for you without some fiddling. It's used to get S-Off. Since you already unlocked your bootloader, you don't need it to flash a custom ROM.
The stock firmware you tried to flash won't be ICS. DHD stock firmware ends with GB.
The custom ROM you tried to flash (as well as any other custom ROM) requires that you: 1. flash it in CWM. 2. fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip.

Okay so now I understand why AAHK1 is not working for me. I did not realize that it was unsupported. Also, the only reason I flashed the DHD stock firmware is just to get my phone rooted since I was unable to figure it out myself. Do you know of a ROM that has ICS that I can flash or do I have to install the original stock ROM without it being rooted then root it myself and install another ROM that has ICS?
I've learned how to flash a custom ROM. I have CWM downloaded thanks to youtube and the video also showed me how to flash a ROM. So I am able to do that.
You don't need root to flash a ROM, just an unlocked or S-Off bootloader. You have an unlocked one, so that works. Flash a ROM from CWM, then fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip. The Ace Think Tank thread has links for that.

Do i have to be rooted to flash a rom or just have a unlocked bootloader

do i only need to have a unlocked boot loader to flash a rom. or is root needed
Just an unlocked bootloader.
This. If it modifies boot.IMG you'll need an unlocked bootloader for any phone.
Root access has nothing to do with flashing a custom ROM
You can flash a custom ROM and not have root access
You can have root access without a custom ROM
You need an unlocked bootloader for both (unless you use Towelroot or whatever, which I don't recommend).
Read some threads in the first link of my signature.
