[Q] Will this theory work? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If it doesn't then I'm hopeless....
So no one has internet on their phones (me and my dad)
He has a blackberry and i have the samsung memoir
I can't upgrade, but my dad can.
He upgrades to Nexus S + the required line he has to get in order to get the phone.
I activate internet on my line.
My dad gives me the nexus s
I give him my Samsung memoir....
results??? and this is the question I need answered. if it will work
(this is my last thread i will make regarding this question about getting around t-mobiles contracts and stuff)

The only part I didn't understand about your situation is this line:
"He upgrades to Nexus S + the required line he has to get in order to get the phone."
If I'm understanding correctly, yes, you can use your dad's upgrade to purchase the Nexus S for $200 with contract (which will consequently add data to his CTN), pop your SIM card into the Nexus S, pop your dad's SIM into the Memoir, call T-Mobile, have them add unlimited data to your CTN with the Nexus S, and have them drop unlimited data from your dad's CTN with the Memoir.

Difference between what? Data and internet plan? Different terms for the same concept.

When I use my 2-year contract at bestbuy to get the nexus s, will I just get the phone?
I don't have internet yet.
I need to know if they will (add internet when I get the phone)
or will I (get the phone only)
and then go to t-mobile to add internet.
please answer asap
(tried making the question really simple so no one gets confused.)
They should set up all of that in store

its like going to tmobile and getting a contract they will make you get the data plan there
If you pay $529 you can get it without internet.
If you only pay $199 then you get a 2 year contract and will have internet added to you plan.
Sorry to threadjack, though my question is certainly related.
If you're on an Even More Plus plan and you sign your contract to get the phone for $199, can you stay on the Even More Plus or will you be forced onto the more expensive Even More plan?

T-mobile won't allow you to convert an Even More Plus line into an Even More line of service.
I want the phone by upgrading, but I dont want the internet/web service/data plan/etc. (just the phone only).

Can't, cuz to upgrade you need a new 2 year contract. So you need to pony up $529 to get just the phone.

I understand what both of you are saying, but I don't understand what that means for me and my account. Is that to say that the ONLY way for me to get this phone is going to be to buy it unlocked regardless? There's got to be a different way than that.

But to do an upgrade and get it at $200, you have to get a data plan, they will force you to get the data plan, you can try later online or calling tmobile and try to get it removed, but probably won't be able to.

I think you can't, since they get the phone with the data plan, you must have it for 2 years. If you take it off in less than 2 years, thats called breaking the contract and you have to pay uhhmmm $200, i think?
I still have the G1 and cheaper $65 contract which includes data. Could I buy the unlocked Nexus S and just put the SIM from the G1 in it? The cheapest new contract I could find is $79+

you can just buy it outright
you can go on a month to month plan

This is my plan, I am on sprint right now and when I look at my bill my minutes are so low I barely break fifty a month. Data usage can go high on months, I just plan on using my gizmo account with the built in SIP for the random call I need to make when I am about town, also will be porting in my current cell number into google voice.
and well hey if tmobiles coverage is so so in an area im in I can always go to mcdonalds and make a call on free wifi

To get a Nexus S with the data only plan (webConnect plan), you must buy the Nexus S at full price. Then call up T-Mobile and request the webConnect plan, and give them the SIM card number for your Nexus S (there's an unactivated SIM card included with every Nexus S).
The only way to get the subsidized price is to start a new 2-year voice+data contract.

[Q] Where/how to upgrade Verizon phone?

So, I'm do for an upgrade, but the choices on the Verizon site stink. I'm supposed to get a "new every two" but that's a joke. Letstalk and WireFly both have a decent deal on either a Inc2 or a Thunderbolt, but...
I don't understand the upgrade process. Those sites both appear to want to change my plan. I do not want to change my plan! I have all the minutes and data I need. Both sites appear to be jacking me on my plan.
What's the best way to upgrade without changing plans?
buy a new phone out right, then use your existing plan on the new phone
else, they would try to force you to lose your current plan
I was afraid of that. I keep hearing about people getting decent phones for $0-$99, but there always seems to be a catch.
Man... hard as heck to find a decent phone...
How do I get a SIM card if I buy a used phone?
If it is say Verizon or Sprint, they don't distribute sim cards as they do not operate on gsm. If it's t-mo or att I think you just walk into a store and ask.
Probably because your on an out dated plan. Verizon used to have over 20 ? plans and slimmed it down. In most cases you wont spend more money on the plan. Just never activate a non smartphone if you already have unlimited data obviously

I think I got this figured out. The "deals" Verizon offered me to extend the contract were nuts. I found a lightly used Thunderbolt and got it at a good price. it is supposed to have a clean ESN and unused SIM card (wait and see).
I do have an older plan with unlimited data ($30) and the minute-package is $10 less than what they are now... no way I'm changing my plan.
So hopefully I'll be able to activate the 'Bolt and not change anything.

[Q] General ATT Data Plan Question

Hey Everyone,
Not sure if I should be asking here so let me know if I should go somewhere else. Here is my situation: I currently have a ATT GS2 (NOT skyrocket 4g) which I used my upgrade for about 6 months ago, but now I want the One X. I am on a family plan and I am grandfathered to unlimited data. Now, my sister is eligible for an upgrade and she wants a GS2, so I was thinking of using her upgrade to get the One X and we can just swap phones, win win right? Now the part I am confused about is would I get to keep my unlimited data since the One X is a 4G phone? Would the unlimited data be 4G speeds if I did get to keep it? Would she be able to downgrade to the cheaper non 4g data plan after the switch? It is all very confusing to me and any clarification would be appreciated.
Thanks!

People with Unlimited data are getting switched to unlimited LTE. No worries
And no difference in price for LTE, either. Just make sure they do it right, especially if done in store. If they mess it up and put you on a tiered plan, its very difficult to switch back.

Make sure they repeat back your data plan and features back to you to make sure and what I usually do is when I get home I call AT&T (dial 611) and double check with them as well.
If they do end up removing your "unlimited" data, and they try to tell you they "can't" switch it back, just request a regional manager, they should have someone local, and demand it. My local corporate store has, on two different occasions, (tried to) switch me to a tiered plan but I ended up getting it back.
Thanks for the advice everyone! One last question: would it be best for me to buy it from the ATT store to have the easiest transition, or, lets say if I got it from Amazon/Target/wherever its cheaper, would that be too much of a hassle or impossible to get the correct data plans?

if you buy onlinefrom amazon you have to choose a new plan at purchase so get it at a store.
It's a simple cross upgrade. You'll be fine. You'll be grandfathered into an LTE plan which means 5gbs of data before you get throttled. I always advise folks to go to an ATT corporate store over getting the phone cheaper at authorized retailers cos they usually mess things up. Amazon has weird contracts too. Something about they won't let you change your plan for 6 months? Idk

Another Unlimited Data Question

Broke my S3, and would like to upgrade to the Moto X. Unfortunately, I have the unlimited data upgrade. Our family plan has 5 lines. 1 unlimited smart, 1 tiered smart, and 3 dumb phones. I've searched and heard NUMEROUS stories on how to keep unlimited data, and read comments from people about how none of those work. I figured the XDA folks may be a bit more knowledgeable than some other forums, so I'm trying my hand here. I've heard a few different ways to do it:
1. Transfer my upgrade through myverizon to a dumb line and then upgrade. (Verizon alone has given me about 4 different answers on if this would void my UDP)
2. Find a retailer that would work things around and keep my UDP. (Found a guy, verizonchris, on a different site that said he could do this for me most likely, but he needs my billing password. Naturally, Im reluctant to give it out)
3. Transfer upgrade on myverizon, go to a store and get a upgrade voucher for motomaker, then upgrade through motomaker and it will keep my UDP.
I've heard of some others, as I'm sure you guys have, and am really just looking for some sort of verification for this from some smart peeps!
(Sidenote, I'm also going to claim the S3 on Asurion. Does anyone know what Asurion is giving people for broken vzw S3's? Heard a few different things, maybe an upgrade through that would be possible?)
Thanks!

Sounds like you may be overthinking this, or something has changed that I'm not aware of.
You can't do anything with the upgrade available on your unlimited line. If you do, this will most likely reset your line to tiered data.
The upgrade would need to be on the dumb phone line.
You would upgrade that dumb phone's line to the phone you want.
When the phone comes, call up Verizon and activate the new phone on your line.
Double check with Verizon that the data plan will not activate on the dumb phone's line.
Enjoy your new phone with unlimited data! Too bad the person who uses that dumb phone won't have an upgrade for another couple years.
If other lines on the account have upgrades available all you will need to do is update using one of the other updates. The line yoy used for the upgrade will now have a 2gb plan but you don't activate with that line. Just put your SIM in and you will still have your UNLIMITED DATA. Hope this helped.

The 'new every two' was discontinued 2 years ago. The reason you get a new subsidized phone price is because you're re-entering into a contract with verizon... so it's like it's a new contract/line. You don't have credits and there's nothing to transfer, but if your contract is up, you can get the 'new' price. Unless you have unlimited data... you do that and they'll move you to a 'share everything' plan.
I've been told Costco will generally eat the cost of the phone, just to sell you one at the 'new' price and get the credit for your business. You keep the unlimited data and Verizon thinks you paid full retail. I can't confirm that plan will work for you, but many here have said that's worked for them.
Personally, I'm in the EDGE program. Pay $16-30/month more for a new device, keep my unlimited data and every 12 months, get to pick a new device. Yes, you're paying $200-360 for the phone, but A- that's not much more than the 'new' price', B- you get to keep unlimited data, C- you get a new phone every 1 year, rather than 2 years with re-entering a contract and D- you were probably going to pay that much for a phone off eBay anyway if you have unlimited data. Dunno if that makes sense for someone with so many lines, but if you keep it to 1-2 lines and really need that data (like I do), then it makes perfect fiscal sense.

That's a huge flaw in Best Buy's system if it works. Because the purchase of the new phone requires a re-entry into contract and VZ specifically has blocks on subsidized phone prices on grandfathered data plans. Not even GMs in Verizon stores can override it... I've tried.
So basically, you're placing a 3rd party order and because Best Buy can't send you a live sim card (only VZ can), you swap it for your current one and VZ is never the wiser. Clever, but tread lightly and quickly.. I can't imagine this flaw will remain open for long.
