One of the things which allows humans to perceive objects in 3D is depth of field. When you focus on a close-up object, objects in the background become out of focus. This lets your mind know the object up close is up close. You also cannot focus near and far at the same time.
So, when you put a clearly focused wallpaper behind clearly focused icons, the mind perceives the surface as flat. However, if you were to soften the focus of the wallpaper, the mind would perceive that the icons are actually closer to you or seem to "float" above the background.
EASY WAY TO TRY IT:
Just download Photoshop Express (it's free) to your phone and open your favorite wallpaper in it. (Note: you must go to settings and tell it to look in areas other than just your photo folder if you keep your wallpapers stored elsewhere).
Ok, once your wallpaper is open, go to Menu > Edit Photo. You will then see some icons appear at the top. Tap on the 3rd one from the left and then click on "Soft Focus". To soften the focus, you simply drag your finger left to right over the image. The max you can do at any one time is 20. However, just click the green checkmark at the bottom right and then drag again until you reach the desired soft focus. I find that 2 x 20 works well.
Once you have the image you want, click the green arrow again, then click the button on the bottom right that has an arrow going into a hard drive. This will save your new image. Don't worry, it doesn't write over your original image but creates a brand new image.
Now go and attempt to add the wallpaper. It will be the last image in the folder since you have just created it. It will not be next to the original image.
Now look at your icons and you should notice they look more 3D than before. Enjoy!

Ok, you got me, what the hell does that mean?
Yep. I also make lots of backgrounds by taking photos or just drawing blobs of color and applying a gaussian blur to make it look more muted and subtle.

Probably wants a Screenshot.
Also dropping a shadow on your icons would produce this depth perception
And how do you add a drop shadow to your icon??

Hey there guys,
I need a Photoshop genius to do a massive favour for me. So that I can make some HTC sized icons, I need a mask made, like a template.
It needs a vector mask, that will make any perfectly square icon have rounded edges like the HTC icons have. See icon below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I need the vector mask template to allow me to make any picture into an icon like the one above.
I hope someone can help. Not very good with masks. Once I have a template, making any icons should be easy.
Thanks ^^
This would be nice to have, count me in.
If someone can make me a template, with the exact outline, and the glare, I might be able to work on some icons. But they will have to wait until early January (have exams before then).
See if this will do the job for you guys. It was a quick job. I have attatched a sample logo using the template.

Going to give it a try now.
Update: Looks good. However, to add another image to it, we need a vector mask to cut off the corners. Can't insert another image into that and use it as an icon sadly, as the corners don't cut off.
Having said that, I'm not amazing at using Photoshop, so maybe I can't see the layer mask. I'm assuming it's there and cropping the edges of the blue background yes?
Just checked again. Can't see the vector mask anywhere =(
Other than that, the glare and shadow are EXCELLENT! Really. Very good. All we need is a vector mask to cut off the corners, so we can add any image and keep the same shape.
197 views and 4 replies is depressing for this topic =(

Silly me I didnt think people will be using images as background. Anyhow I have uploaded a new file. This one has a layer mask over all the layers. All you need to do is whatever you add is under the masked layer (ps folder).

You see how the background is only as far as the keys are and you get the white (or whatever color the bg is of the app your on) sidebar and bottom stripe?
You can't see that on the original LatinIME.apk.
See, this is the original.
Its that dark gray background on the LatinIME.apk that I want fixed on the Voice Keyboard.
Come on, is no one gonna help me? I was told it was easy! I have no idea how to fix it, but I was hoping someone would!
I'm playing around with the APK a bit, its called "VoiceSearchWithKeyboard.apk", formery "VoiceSearch.apk" and "LatinIME.apk". I was hoping to find a transparent "Such_and_such_Image.png" in the new one, and the same image, only not transparent, in the old one. So far, I'm not seeing it. Perhaps its something deeper, something in the XMLs?
I can see you don't like the way it is now, but I think most people do, and I believe its working as intended.
Perhaps someone more experienced can help shed some light?
***Attached are the files in question***
In this post Konipub has a flashable zip for his rom with voice keyboard that doesn't have transparent background(atleast not in HIS pictures)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6182240&postcount=2
So I removed all the key layout files from my phone because some of them had different names and I know the zip wouldn't over ride them; and I flashed it. It looks just like the one from darches google ****s. I don't know if konipubs picture is inaccurate, or perhaps the background file is actually a file from the framework-res? I almost feel like it must be. Will do some heavy digging tonight!
: Disregard:
Its probably in an .xml within the layout folder. That keyboard bugs me when its like that as well...I'd dig through the .xml's, but ive been too tired to even focus on it...Try the Droid X keyboard, its nicer.

Thanks. I actually do have Froyo with CM6 Test Build 0 right now, but I think the VoiceSearchWithKeyboard.apk was removed.

I take it back, I think the problem is because the. .apk is for high resolution phones. I'm willing to bet there s an hdpi folder instead of mdpi. Yup, I was right this is for high Res phones. Its an easy fix.

I have an idea for Icons, quick links, notifications, slider, and bottom soft key bar that I would like to see come to life.
The problem is, I'm not a dev, I do not have Photo shop, and if I ran out and bought it, I would'nt know how to use it.
SOOOO, My idea with your talents, and this would be one rockin package. I might even learn a few things along the way
I was looking at a pic of a etched glass globe, and said WOW that would look so nice as icons/theme on my phone. I wonder how hard it would be to do.
Here is the pic of my insperation. If your interested in taking this on, please contact me, and lets get the ball rolling.
Cheers

Hey, you dont need to create a whole theme for this i guess, you already have all the tools in this forum to do so. E.g Just use Hello00's glossy theme and a glass icon set, then use the above globe image as your background.
See my screenshot, the clock is hel00s gloss clock and the icons are Dinik's Anastasia set if i remember correctly. It will look sweet with the globe.
Try and out and let us know how u get on.
thanks for the tip, looks nice.
But, I was thinking of making the images for the glass icons in an etched look, and doing the rest of the elements IE, soft bar, slider, clock, ect etched as well. The flip clock is probibly already out there (or something close to it) and shouldnt take to much to do.
The rest how ever would take a lot of PS time.
Ah, i see what you mean.
Im sure somebody will be able to help you with this.
It will look good when done.
Ill be watching this thread, good luck with it.
Very nice concept, far beyond my abilty, but I will look forward to a capable designer to create these.
its not so easy...you have to know 3d editing...like 3d max...there is a 3d ball and a texture placed on it. it looks only good...because the globe texture need to be round...but if you place something not round...like home...it gonna look horrible.
honestly, I was not seeing a 3D image in my mind. more like taking your Anastasia template and putting a etched image in the layers representing the app.
The idea of a 3D image would look nice, but be a lot of work.
I recently went on a search for getting some good wallpapers for my Droid X. I downloaded various 960x864 pictures, but whenever I try to set them as wallpaper it forces me to crop them into a 864x864 square it seems. Is this normal?
Excellent question I just got my droid yestyerday and I want to use some images I have as wallpaper but it tries to crop them to small and into a square how can I get my images to work as backgrounds?
Have you tried sliding the cropping box out to encompass the entire image?
It slides to the side but will not slide down to get whole image.
By slide to the side do you mean than the cropping box moves, but does not grow?
The box will grow if you "grab" it from the edge of the box.

it seems to only grow at a fixed 1:1 ratio, I may take a video later to show it because I understand it's hard to grasp what we're saying without seeing what's happening. I can enlarge the orange square to "maximum" but from there I can't stretch it wider. Here's an image of it, kinda blurry but you can still see the issue.
Can't post it as an image but here's the link
www dot photoshop dot com/accounts/9957f134d6344f1d91f6bfe43b91f4d3/px-assets/8e8de8366a2a4c72882d1dea1ec55865
It will always grow at a 1:1 ratio. The bounding box is fixed at a ratio of 960x854. You won't be able to stretch it wider once the box hits the top and bottom of the image you are applying.
I downloaded some wallpapaers that were supposedly that resolution and they still seem overly large and I have to crop them?
You will ALWAYS have to set the crop if you want the entire image to be included. Regardless of the original size - be it the precise size (960x854) or another size - the cropping box will start out smaller than the image. You will always need to drag the edge of the box to its largest size in order to encompass the entire image.
The image I posted the link to is 960x854, but as you can see the box is maxed yet there is still some of the image that needs to be added to complete it. I understand that it will always ask to crop the image, but why won't it fit to the proper image size?
Any chance you have your dimensions reversed? Are you sure the image isn't 854x960? In your image it looks like it is off center. If the cropping box was fully expanded to the WIDTH, it wouldn't be possible to be off center.
I am guessing that it is hitting the HEIGHT restriction first, leaving a gap on the side, as indicated in the image below.
If you want to upload your background picture I can check it. Or you can email it to me if that is easier. My XDA username @ the most likely email domain for an Android user.

Just wrapping up 30 day trial with mt4gs and leaning towards keeping it. Biggest missing feature...digital zoom.
The Nexus 1 had a measly 2x digital zoom, which I wouldn't think I would miss all that much, but I do. When I saw the specs and marketing I figured it would replicate that, but alas, no digital zoom.
A - is this a standard Gingerbread item that is missing/eliminated?
B - with root is this a feature we could expect in the future to go along with the other photo tools?
Click on the screen to make it focus (with the little green circle), and you'll see a slider bar on which you can adjust the zoom!!!
there's zoom, whiling holding the phone in landscape, by the bottom left screen, slide your finger to the right, and you should zoom.
Thanks so much!
That was not easy to figure out nor find. Once of course you showed it off, it was easy.
Any idea if it is 2x or more?
You can also use volume up and down for zoom...
Some Examples of zoom..
I need a few more posts before I can showcase the photo test I did. (no outside links)

I tried this a few different ways in landscape mode. When in 'Auto' moode as the original answer stated there is a green circle, clicking it anywhere will bring up the onscreen zoom controls, which is a slider left to right.
I didn't see a "slide to show zoom" option with all the methods I tried.

That is VERY slick. Thanks. Fine grain control is a nice to have and works in HD Video shooting to, where a slow zoom can be achieved. Great tip.
