Hi there,
its maybe a stupid question, but what the hell...
..when you update your sofware. from 1.6 to 2.1 or 2.1 to 2.2
do you have to root your device again? or does it stay rootted?
and do you also have to reinstall all your files again or not?
thanks
I was wondering something similar. I was wondering that if I root my Vibrant now, will I have problems when t-mobile pushes the 2.2 update?
If I wont ill root my phone, if i will ill leave it alone until the 2.2 push

If you are already rooted and updating the ROM version, you will NOT loose root. As long as you keep with the custom built ROMs, you'll stay rooted.
If the ROM requires a wipe, then you will loose all your files. There are ROMs that are no-wipe, which allow you to upgrade to the newer version without having to reset your phone.

Do NOT download the T-Mobile 2.2 update if you receive it on your phone. You'll more than likely loose root.
Either download the custom built ROM (not sure if the Vibrant has) or stick with your current version.
thanks for clearing this up...

im not rooted now so its no big deal. however once it pushed ill just root it then and call it done.
I'm not 100% but I think everyone who did the OTA update to 2.2 are now finding that all the rooting tutorials are for 2.1 and cannot root until updated tutorials make their way out. With that said, I would root now while you're still on 2.1 and completely avoid your stock OTA 2.2 update. You'll be able to still update to 2.2 but it will be on a custom rom... win-win.

A little off the op's post, but....
I have a motorola droid, just updated to the froyo 2.2 OTA. Rooted it easily with UniversalAndroot.apk.
i had rooted my galaxy S
and my device can't go into the download mode
because of the software/ hardware problem ( 3button can't use)
can i fresh a new rom without download mode?'
my rom is Eclair.dtjg4 now
Hey everyone... I'm sorta new to rooting. I have a samung epic 4g for sprint. Right now I'm running 2.2 froyo eb13 I just upgraded it. I don't have a computer now cuz it needs to get fixed but I do use my friends mac and occasionally his slow windows xp computer. I know there are apps for rooting your fone without using a pc. Apps such as z4 root ad visionary+ [r14] and universal androot... but I'm having issues with those too.
Z4root- it won't get past a certain screen then it randomly vibrates and slows down my phone drastically. My friend has 2.1 for his vibrant... we both have galaxy s phones. Z4root worked for him within seconds. It won't work for me. Maybe if I downgrade to 2.1 first? Then up to froyo?
VISIONary- it stays on tthe loading screen I can't even temp root it. I tried rebooting the phone nothing works... it slows it down and randomly vibrates like z4root.
Universal androot this is a joke. No matter what I do... "sorry I cannot root your phone "
My questions are:
1. Is there an easier way to root it, maybe another app I don know about? Or if I can download the root and save it like an update.zip?
2. If not... how can I down grade the rom to 2.1? Can I just download the apk and rename it update.zip and go from there when I put it int recovery mode?
3. If I have no luck with rooting it from my phone how can I root it from a mac without using wndows parallel?
I'm so frustrated.... please help me someone... I've been playing this this stupid fone for days. I seem to have no luckkk
I am having the exact same issue. I have had Z4 root on my Samsung Epic 4G (sprint) for about 5 months, and it worked wonderfully. Never had any problems. Just yesterday, the long anticipated Froyo (android 2.2) upgrade was pushed out to my phone. Now, the Z4 root will no longer work. In fact, it does exactly what diamondprincessxoo explains that her phone does in the post above. Any suggestions???
What I am trying to do now is download odin and flash my phone to 2.1 to re download eclair. I don't know if once I download it to 2.1 if when I upgrade it back to 2.2 if z4root will still kep my phone rooted. Hopefully it will. I will do more indepth research later. If I am successfuli wat o eventually upgrade it to 2.3 gingerbread.. but my pc is acting up so idk its a challenge fixing that first
Same problem omg someone help us
Hey all. New user so I wasnt able to post on the development thread I saw. So I saw that Motorola has the official update to 2.3, and from what Ive read if you have unlocked your phone, updating will most likely brick your phone. What about on simply a rooted atrix? Will i be fine updating to 2.3? Will my phone still be rooted?
Actually, as being newbie too.. I understood that only DOWNGRADE from Gingerbread backward to any previous version will brick the phone.
Now, about updating already rooted phone.. i tried OTA but failed (got that yellow exclamation mark screen). So, what is necessary to successfully update rooted 1.83 to GB and to have root access again after? If possible not to loose any data, partitions etc.. Or simply how to apply OTA update on rooted phone then to root it again?
Rooted Atrix
First time posting here, hopefully I am on the right thread.
I am currently using Android V 2.2.2 on a rooted AT&T Atrix. I tried downloading the new Motorola released Gingerbread over-the-air, which downloaded fine. However when I try to install I keep getting "exclamation" mark with the android logo. I hard to hard reset the phone and got the message "software upgrade failed" message.
Is there something I am supposed to do prior to the installation? Since my phone has already been rooted (that's about all I did).
Thanks for any help. And glad to be here. better late than never.
I have heard that in order to upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 OTA from Rooted 2.2.2 of Atrix 4G, We need to UNROOT first. if not OTA upgrade will soft brick the phone.
As i heard, there is another solution which is to OFFLINE upgrade via USB cable by computer. first is to download the Gingerbread ROM for ATRIX 4G from Motorola website.
For exact How-To guide I am not sure and can't find yet. if any one know How to Unroot and Offline upgrade, Please help to clarify.
Please let me know if Unroot the "gingerbreak" on 2.2.2 will cause any trouble? as i have experienced rooting Atrix 4G Froyo 2.2.2 by Gingerbreak has vanished all my internal memory contents :'( . now time for unroot and upgrade.. feel very risky!!!
Please HELP!
theres a forum for all of your questions
you'll get more attention from other atrix users

You will have to have to follow these steps to get NVflash a recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 Then you can flash this from recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048274 to go back to froyo. If you only want to go to froyo to get root you can follow the first link and NVflash recovery then flash one of the pre rooted roms in the development thread. If you want the pure stock vanilla then you can flash the stock recovery by following the same quide as the first link I posted.
I cant make it work :/
i did everything it says on the thread you send me, and it doesnt work i cant go back to froyo. :S
I think i just broke the phone =( it stays in blank rebooting it self F!(#(&!$#&($13 the screen is black with the light blinkin =( what can i do????
OK Ill try to shorten this post as much as I can.
Basically I was running 2.2 Froyo on my rogers (canadian) captivate today. I tried to upgrade to 2.3 using Samsung keis (officially released 2.3 in Canada/rogers). The update did not work at all and I was forced to recover with ODIN one click and it brought my phone to 2.1 (it was never at ANY point 2.1) and AT&T. I need to know how to bring it back to atleast 2.2 so I can try to upgrade to 2.3 again (I think I know what went wrong, I was rooted, probably screwed it somehow). Ive attempted alot of things to try and bring it back including factory reset but I dont want to screw with it any more myself. If anybody could post step by step instructions with links on how to get back to 2.2 short of sending it in (absolute LAST resort) then you have no idea how grateful I would be. I just want to be done with this phone modding nonsense.
