[Q] Lanyard for the DZ: how are we going to fit one? - G2 and Desire Z Accessories

So we don't have a lanyard hole on the Desire Z... Obviously HTC want us to drop it and buy a new one every few months ;-)
Has anyone got any ideas as to how we can do this? (or have done this???)
I reckon it needs to be 'hung' from the top right, or bottom right corner as you look at it, then it naturally hangs with the keyboard closed.
Cheers
Rich.

I simply got a hard case that had a hole in it. Both protection and a lanyard spot. Of course, that's if you want a hard case.

I never could figure out why HTC removes the lanyard hole for some phones (G1, G2), and has them for other phones (Touch Pro 2, MyTouch Slide)...
It is a mystery why it isn't included in every phone...

Search results gave me this......

Obfuscated link because the admins here like to fight crime before it happens.
And yes charms are stupid, a short 6" lanyard is totally awesome for getting your device out when you're doing other things, like say riding a bike.

Edit: I would think this idea would work much better if you had a extra back caseing (bodyglove or such case) to add support for the battery door to stay closed.

hmm, you could always use some kind of strong tape to stick the back door down

OK, found this AWESOME tear down of the Desire Z/G2
http:
//tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down
So looking at the top and bottom right corners, perhaps we could drill an in and out hole to make a bomb proof lanyard anchor.

wow brill, have you got a desire z, are you going to do this? now i know its a possibility i think i just might get one!

I have always been using lanyards/wrist straps on my smartphones and so will I on my Z.
On my previous device (HD2) I had ordered a case at Piel Frama and they had kindly accepted to add holes on my flip case for free.
Unfortunately for the Desire Z they have not released any flip case due to the physical keyboard.
The only solution I found is buying on Fortte site a flip case allowing using physical keyboard while it's in the case. You can choose your clip and among them there is the wrist strap. I have not received the case yet so cannot give you feedback for the moment.

I haven't totally investigated drilling the top/bottom right hand corner yet... But i reckon that's the go....
I want a solution without any add-on case.
It's pants that HTC don't add the holes... there's no reason other than conspiracy theories, why they shouldn't/couldn't.

Definitely a CIA conspiration
Serisously maybe HTC thinks that smartphones have become too heavy to be carried on with a lanyard? Maybe they are afraid of people who would complaint because of a lanyard (and consequently phone) breakage?
Just my feeling because I don't see any other reason why they would have decided to remove these holes

Going snowboarding tomorrow.
I guess ill use the rear door for a lanyard. Although the a few times my kid has dropped my phone and it comes hurtling off.
It should be fine. I also use something called a lighter leash that I have attached to the inside of my jacket pocket. Its similar to those things you see for id cards in hospitals. You pull on it and the string comes out.

You can use the keyboard hinge for that. It's worked great for me on the G1 and G2.
Only catch is that you can't just loop the lanyard around the hinge, there'd be too much extra string around the hinge. You have to pull the lanyard apart, wrap the string around the hinge, then put it back together. Totally worth it though.

hmm, that is a tryer, but i think there are already problems with the hinge and id really like a strap attached to the case, im dithering about where to get the torx 5 screwdriver from.

I don't think the hinge will break that easily lol

2 days boarding. no problem with the batter cover lanyard.
I just spent 2 days riding with the battery cover based lanyard.
It worked great and the conditions were pretty rugged.
I can recommend this method and I will use it again.

Any tips on which lanyard to get that can be pulled apart? As my lanyard is glued together in a plastic case where the string reaches the strap.
I've got a temporary solution of dental floss around the case hinge (!) and then that is attached to the lanyard. Dental floss is surprisingly strong. It just looks a bit DIY with some white duct tape wrapped around it...

Short Review and Photos of Mesh (Hard Case) Casing

Hello everyone! Just wanted to share this with the people here. Bought an Orange mesh case on ebay via London Magic Store and have been very happy with it. It's so nice that I am considering buying the white and possibly the blue one as well.
It doesn't provide as much protection as the gel cases, but it makes the device easier on the eye. It simply looks sleek.
Now on to the photos:

this orange one looks great!
i'll wait until my red one dies, if ever... LOL
have anyone wondered.... Why the hell the cases does not cover the bottom of the phone??????, we just need a pin size hole for the mic
all these slick great looking hybrid (soft/hard) cases are like that... why?
not like we have any connectors there
I thought the mesh cases were the ones with holes in them? Usually, on Ebay, these are just referred to as "rubberized hard back case" or something like that.

But somehow, I prefer the real mesh design (the ones with holes all over) but they don't come in orange.
As for the bottom opening, it's most probably to retain the flexibility of the case, so U can snap in and out easily. Mine came with a hairline crack at the bottom.. but it's a minor thing.. so Im not bothered.

maybe that's the reason
otherwise i can't understand why the soft gel / rubber ones are fully wrapped, but the nice stylish ones are butt naked
i already have a full gel one, it's great for protection, but sometimes it gets a bit on the edge, when the finger is too close to the end of the screen.
so i prefer the stylish models like the orange one, makes using the phone easier, the finger doesn;t get caught in the way of the gel/rubber cases when sliding close to the edge of the screen

Naiveness ;> It's to save money, simple as that. Making a case which covers the top and bottom requires more precision work in order for it to snap in/out easily enough and beside that it also require more material and design work.
Back to topic though, you tricked my expectations Not nice playing with people's mind like that, saying it's a mesh case review when it's not. Anyhow, t'is a nice case, I should be getting the black version within a day or two.
As far as protection goes... Not really expecting much, if any at all. Pretty sure I'll end up buying a case mate tough case or something similar for the scenarios when I know I'll be more likely to drop things. Too bad they're pretty expensive, in comparsion.
but the mesh case and this case is identical

But can U confirm the quality and finishing is identical?
Coz if I'm not wrong, the mesh cases are official Samsung accessory, made by Anycall. There's a shop here (set up by some China nationals) that sell cheap cases and they happened to have something similar to the one shown here, with various colours... They're S$15 and look cheap. Not sure if they are the same.
Do note the price varies alot.. U$11++ for the mesh ones and U$3++ for this with free shipping..
ihave the same case from london magic store but in purple and its great, gives the phone a lot more solid feel without making it too chunky.
also recived an orange mofi case to keep it in and even with the case on it fits in fine, very pleased
Anybody knows if this cases fit Samsung Galaxy SL (i9003)? I would love to buy one, but I don't know if it's going to fit with my phone!
Thank you mates!!
Nice looking case. Im stuck with some half metal half plastic pile of depression that scratches after the slightest graze. Seems like i got what i had for the money......

I'm awaiting reports regarding quality and how good does it fit.
I was thinking about getting her a clear acryllic case but then she saw the pink one lol
I bought BLACK HYBRID HARD CASE COVER FOR HTC DESIRE Z +FILM from the link above and it fits well. Only disadvantage is additional weight on the bottom part of the phone and if you pick up the phone using top part only, keyboard will open. Gravitation ...
I'm reasonably happy for the time being but I think I will buy leather case in future.
Can someone post side on pics please? Are they 2 separate pieces that just click on to the front and back yeah? Is it hard plastic or rubber or what?...
I was hoping for a one piece hydro gel case but none available!
EDIT... Yep two bits. Hard case with a soft touch rubberized coating.
Does it stick to the inside of your pocket?

I bought one of those hard covers for £2.90. It's a deep red. Gorgeous colour. Mine's like a matt anodised finish. I already have a screen protector fitted so didn't bother with the one that comes with the case.
Yes it's two bits. They snap on easily and haven't yet come loose. No it doesn't stick in your pocket; it's a smooth plastic. I did have a couple of ultra-thin sticky-out bits, from the mould I guess, which I easily trimmed off with a knife.
Look right, it's £2.90 to protect your Z. I'd suggest splashing out if you're at all cack-handed like me.
They call it the RED HYBRID HARD CASE COVER FOR HTC DESIRE Z +FILM and it's sold by "londonmagicstore". In case you're wondering, I'm nothing to do with them.

I managed to drop my phone on hard floor (tiles) and it survived thanks to mentioned cover. Unfortunately cover got damaged a little bit. One small part, that makes cover sticks to the phone is broken. I'm going to buy another cover since this one saved my phone.
I also will check what's available in Hong Kong. Most covers I've seen here are for iPhones, but maybe I will find something for HTC.

OK, so I recived it yesterday.
It does look really nice, I'll get some pics up when I have time.
The bottom half fits well and doesn't come off.
She complained that the top half keeps coming off. What i did was when I put it on, slide it on to the top of the phone then push it down onto the bottom half of the phone. It seems more sturdy.
Ill get her to test it out today and see how it goes.
The screen protector is quite good. We got a mirrored one which looks quite fancy. It is properly cut to fit the screen. It also has a cut out for the ear piece and a cut out for the light sensor.
All together with the case and the screen protector it has totally changed the look of the phone.
Desired effect achieved
Managed to get a few photos up. Over all its a nice looking case with an OK fit. She had some problems at first but after I fitted it properly its only happened once. The screen protector has a few scuffs on it after a couple of weeks use, its not very good. The case has a couple of scuffs where the paints scratching off it.
Guys, I'v had one of these hybrid soft touch plastic cases on mine for 2-3 weeks now,.... But because she is so beautiful I'm prone to taking the case off when I'm at home just to look at her.
Today I have noticed some little nicks/dents where the clips snap on and off!!!!!!
If you are unlike me and happy to leave it on all the time you will have no problem, I was clicking mine on and off 2, 3, 4 + times a day.
I'm gona replace mine with a gel one now. Ah well,.... I hope you guys can learn from my mistake.

Adhesive for replacing digitizer?

Hey guys, I'm attempting to replace my digitizer for the second time after my first attempt ended up with a digitizer which was a distinctly different shape than the original and therefore looks terrible! Anyhow I'm looking for a decent adhesive to keep it in place. Would pretty much anything do or does anyone have a preference?
Cheers!

Here is the stuff I used, working great so far.. Not sure where you could get it (maybe frys or something) (I grabbed some from work).. its thin, double sided, super sticky once it sets, and made by 3M.. I just cut it into very thin strips using a ruler and exacto blade.. If you have trouble finding some, I have enough leftover that I could mail you to get the job done..

also, i used a couple drops of super glue on the top portion (where there is a decent amount of plastic surface area)..

if you cant find it locally try amazon or:
http://cgi.ebay.com/2mm-3M-Adhesive...391482?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4aa6a4b2fa
another thing, something that is probably more "locally available" would be to buy the 3M digitizer tape for an iphone, and cut it up into the 4 strips you'll need
I used some of the loctite superglue gel. Very very thin layer of it and it worked great, I didn't like how the original digitizer sat flush with the frame of the phone, after using the superglue the digitizer is slightly below the frame so it the phone was dropped face down the frame would hit the ground first hopefully saving the screen

Yeah I'm going with a combo of the tape and superglue, just because I don't trust myself to be delicate with superglue down the sides
I'll have to post some pics of the before and after, just to give a sense of how crap the first replacement was. It's so poor I'm using a full body case to keep the digitizer held in! It also lacks the bottom buttons and is the incorrect size (Around 1cm in total, top and bottom) compared to the original digitizer. It's gonna be a nice day when it's back to tip top condition
Cheers buddies! very useful stuff
Anyone happen to know where I can pick up the thick foamy type adhesive? Some of it is torn around edges & want to fill in the gaps with something better than 4 layers of the thin 3m stuff. I might try tiny strips of electrical tape in those spots, but would rather proper real thing.

Doesn't it look like the Otterbox Defender?
At first looks cool, but then after a close look it kind of makes the phone look bulky
Looks exactly like what the Defender would be but Otterbox hasn't released a Defender for our Sensation. I wonder if these are from a batch of prototypes Otterbox had produced but decided not to market? I would love to hear from anyone who tries this. I might take the plunge myself as a matter of fact.

Mine arrived this morning.
I had a Defender for my iPhone, which saved it a couple of times (mainly from beer spillage) so I wanted something similar and this appears to be the only option until a more established manufacturer pulls their finger out!
So, here are my thoughts on it.....
Overall:
Build quality is very middle of the road, ergonomics need working on, but for the price it does the trick.
Inner case:
The inner plastic case is snug and feels robust enough to withstand the odd drop (not as tough as O/box plastic tho..). It clips on and off easily enough, but not so easy as to make me concerned. All the holes are there and they are where they should be.
However, there is a serious - yet workable - design flaw with the "built-in" screen protector. It comes glued to the inner case, which is great, but in order to remove the protective plastic film on either side of it, you have to prise it off and then stick it back on once you've removed the film. Luckily the glue they use is extra crappy, so it's quite easy to un-stick. To re-glue the screen protector back on, I just used tiny amounts of superglue gel, applied with a pin head. Unfortunately tho, this means that the front face of the phone is not sealed and therefore not splash or dust proof.
Outer case:
The outer silicone is not of a good quality. It's very thin and floppy and I predict it would lose it's shape and possibly tear if it were pulled about too much. This is both unfortunate and ironic as it takes a lot of pulling and poking to get it to fit around the inner case. Once you've got it on properly, it's fine - it's just a bit of a mission to get it snug and flush. However, the biggest design flaw with the outer case, is that the headphone and usb port covers do not stay shut - or rather they open very easily. There is no "wedge" mechanism on the doors to ensure they hold in place. This is particular annoying as they flap open if your fingers brush past them when you are holding the phone. In order to rectify this, I have used a tiny bit of blu-tack (don't know what the US equivalent of it is, sorry) on the inside of the cover doors so they stay shut. One other thing... my particular model has what looks like a small cigarette burn on it, but I guess that's just my bad luck there!
Conclusion:
Obviously, I realise that this is not a O/box, or any other decent case brand for that matter, so I can't be too harsh on it, especially at the price I paid ($17.95/ £11.50). At the end of the day, it's an (almost fully) encapsulating case which will give my Senny more protection than most other options available, at least until someone makes a better alternative.
No, it doesn't look like the coolest case on the block, but that's not what I have my phone for, so I'm not too concerned about aesthetics. What matters to me is that it works.... and it does (almost lol!).
Hope this was useful. If anyone has had any differing experiences with this case, I'd be very interested to hear about them.
Cheers,

Unique nexus 4 cover/bumper. Environment friendly!

Hahah good one!
Kind of reminds me of the hands-free headset that has no wires or batteries..
The case makes it look like a Nexus S!
As someone asked on reddit for a tutorial, ill copy it here. Not much you cant figure out yourself.
My case consists of 7 layers of cardboard. Depending on the thickness it may be more or less with others.
1. Take the nexus 4 box. Cut out a few rectangles as big as the box is. (7 was enough for me).
2. In the inside of the nexus 4 box, take the 'tray' out where your nexus4 used to lay in. Fold it open and trace the shape onto a few cardboard pieces. This is going to be your 'bumper' section. You need as much layers as your phone is thick (9.1mm). The shape doesn't need to be perfect, rather cut away too less than too much.
3. Glue them together. It doesn't matter if the hole doesn't match op perfectly.
4. Take a dremel, a drill or any other rotary tool and a sandpaper head. Now sand the hole of the bunper together into the perfect shape. You can use sandpaper and do it by hand if you don't have any tools available.
5. Trace out another piece of cardboard, but this time cut the hole smaller. I just kept the sides by default and took a thumb of thickness extra on the top and bottom. This is your face plate. Pierce two holes on the top where your camera is and proximity sensor.
6. Put the bumper around your phone and mark the sections you want to cut out. Vokume rocker, on-off button, micro usb and the 3.5mm jack.
7. Cut your bumper to pieces and glue it onto your faceplate. Dremel or sand where necessary.
8. Now for the back part: I took two pieces of cardboard. And traced my public transport card on the top of one. Carefully cut out only the top layer if the cardboard and remove the 'waves' or 'ripples' inside.
9. Make an opening in the center of the hole around a fingernail long. This is how you slide the card out.
10. Glue the intact back piece and the card holder piece together so you card will be sandwiched in between.
11. Now you can simply glue them together with your phone inside, or if you want to get it out and leave the box intact, you can make an interlocking mechanism. You can also pierce the corners with a large pick (twist! Don't push, as that ruins your box) or small drill and use some fishing line or hennep strand..gift ribbon even works, to close it up.
finish everything up by sanding or dremelling the sides so they are all correctly aligned and every piece is the same size. You can round your corners too if you wish.

I actually have quite a lot of faith it would work in a droptest from 1 meter high in a cornerdrop (or even flatfaced). If someone wants to sponsor me :3
Send this to MKBHD!
I notice how the layers seperate with the use D:, plastered the sides full of white wood glue now to keep it together.
Pray for me I did not accidentally put glue on my phone
So many reactions I get with my case . I currently also use this wallpaper, but I haven't found a really good one fitting the style.
Looks awesome !!

Similar to yours but live

Unfortunately, live wallpapers kill the battery very quickly.
Yesterday I was laughed at it for the first time by a girl with a white Iphone.
Btw, changed the design a bit. By removing the little connections of the openings on the buttons on the faceplate, I have a folding line , so now I can take my phone out.
Better copyright that design before Otterbox steals it

After a month of use I figured I should update how it went on in use. Got my chinese normal business leather case now, so little use for this any more.
(Really, thumbnails don't work on XDA? :/)
But ye. In terms of design, I can take my phone in and out by removing the two connections and create a folding line. In terms of sturdyness: The cardboard disintegrates into ruffles after a while, and ye, made me to just glue the entire thing. It's a semi-TPU case now. (But it made it a lot more solid). The top bit of the face plate came off. Didn't really bother putting it back on, the phone was enclosed enough and just glued over the rest.
