How's battery life? - G Tablet General

How's everyone's battery life with real world usage? I've been looking into this tablet because of the low price and nice hardware specs.

I can usually get 1 full day of normal constant use out of mine.

Yeah. Usually you wont need a charge till next day.

Min of 10-12 hours, probably more, on my stock unit

Battery Life Decent
I've been getting a full day plus although at work I turn off the wifi (can't connect to corporate network) but have it on most of the evening. Mainly playing "Angry Birds" and surfing the net while working on other things. Much better than the Maylong M-150 and Sylvania MID7 that I tried out before paying more for a more powerful tablet and battery. I bought the wife a NookColor and I am hoping the battery there will be as good (Christmas gift that hasn't been opened yet; screen view angle is definitely better).

the battery is ridiculous... you know how you are when you get a new toy? The first day I was on and off ALL day only to have 45% after it being unplugged 12 hours. I also took a 3 hour flight, watched a movie and still had 87% left.
I truly believe that the 8-10 hours advertises is legitimate which is hard to come by now a days. I am extremely impressed.

We are getting about a days worth of heavy use, mostly on wifi. Can get 2 days worth of moderate use.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
My friend can only use it for less than a day..
heavy user
I only manage a day at best - no better than my legend was actually!
I got this yesterday, was playing on it several hours.. and battery life is about 18-20hrs for heavy usage. Wall charging is quick, about 2hrs max charge.
It gets warm easily when accessing web. Is this normal on HTC Android smartphones?
Yes its very normal :=)
Just got mine for almost a week. The battery lifetime is 2-3 days (normal use). I hope though that after a few complete charges it will rise to 3-4 days...
Can testify to the same experience of warming up (especially when using wi-fi).
At first, the battery life of the HTC ChaCha was really crap! It couldn't even last 1 day (heavy use). But now I have this feeling that it is getting a little bit better after a few full charges. And it also recharges very quickly.
And what do you mean by "full charge"?
2hrs or more?
I'm not sure how ya'll are getting more than 12 hours of battery from this phone. See my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171136
Well, it lasts for me longer than 12hrs
I expected to have around 48hrs with it.
If awake time is how much is it up after charging, it say: 18hr 57min. Battery left: 44%.
So those of you getting a FEW days out of this, do you ever turn it off (say at night) or is the handset always on/idle?

I ditched the Captivate a while ago. Just sick of typing on a screen.
Switched to the Blackberry 9700 and now this phone.
I think the Blackberry 9900 will be a sexier device but I definitely prefer the Android over over Blackberry OS6.
During high usage battery life about 12 hours...
My father played angry bird for 1 hour and the batt drop to less than 50% (after full charge)
Update: Battery life of this device is ridiculous. Seriously.
Switching back to my BB 9700 soon.
I can get up to 3 days of batter life when the phone is completely idle. This doesn't happen too often so with regular use, I can get up to 2 days of battery life.
Heavy usage gives me around 6-8 hours of battery life, which is still much better than Blackberry phones. My old Blackberry was at 60% and it literally died within an hour of using GPS and turn by turn navigation.
Overall, it's a pretty decent battery life, but it does get pretty hot at times like others have pointed out!

Massive battery drain with heavy use!

Before I start, I'm actually fairly happy with the battery life on the sensation. Today it's been off the charger for about 4 hours and I'm still at 97% with little use and some light browsing. So for general such as idle and browsing, it isn't bad.
I have noticed, however, that the battery life sucks when doing intensive things, such as gaming. I lose easily over 30% an hour when watching videos or playing games. The other day I was sitting through a boring meeting, so I played a tower defense game I had. I had about 60% battery life when I started and my phone died in about an hour and a half. My screen brightness was a bit higher than it should have been, but it wasn't full.
I understand it will drain a ton with heavy use, but 60% in less than 2 hours is insane. I took a 25 minute car drive with navigation and my battery dropped over 20%. That's just crazy.
Has anybody else experienced this? What percent/hour do you lose when gaming? It basically means I can't do much gaming or I'm at risk of my phone dying before the day is done.
Bro, what u think gone happen gaming for an hr, with its big screen on that long? Nothing u said I find abnormal from my experience with this phone, are my last 4 phones. Heavy use = drain
Yeah, I realize that it's gonna drain a lot with gaming. At the same time, I don't think 40% an hour is something to be expected. I'm hoping it was just a weird battery cycle.
yeah, i played plants vs zombies and the battery died real fast. However cut the rope doesnt drain the battery that bad. Depends on game but most phones have poor battery life when you do intense stuff.
the nintendo 3ds has a much bigger battery and also has a poor battery life. Battery technology is crap.
...batteries drain faster under heavier loads bro.
Duh!

My stock battery its wank, easily lose 30% an hour on angry birds but I bought an anker 1900mA from Amazon and after taking it off charge this morning at half 7 I've still got 26% left as I write this, nearly 16 hours later.

Have you tried one of the Aftermarket batteries? I have the Anker and it's safe to say that it does last longer than the stock HTC battery for me.

Haha, joke all you want, but coming from the G2X I couldn't kill 60% of the battery in 1.5 hours if I tried.
Go ahead and defend the device all you want, but something about this device destroys the battery more than normal when the screen is burning and the processors are burning.
I agree. This phone has much better standby and general battery life compared to my vibrant, but I have noticed that the gps really burns through battery, moreso than the vibrant.

I actually am really liking the battery life on my sensation, just was in a joking mood. Coming from the EVO 4g i get twice as long with my S4G. Think about it though, you have a 1.2,3,4,5,6,7,or 1.8ghz cpu, depending on Overclock or not, Massive screen resolution, awesome game graphics that take every bit of the CPU/GPU to run them. And it's All running from a tiny ass battery. Look at laptops... If you play a system taxing game for an hour your battery will be toast, and that battery is a lot bigger. I think for what it is, It does a good job.

An extended battery not requiring a bigger back cover that actually works?

Hey guys,
Spent some time searching and reading the relevant threads on G2x, and the final consensus seems to me that there is no widespread agreement with respect to the question I've posed in the thread title. It seems to me that the only extended batteries that are guaranteed to give more than just a 30-60min boost are the 3000mah+ batteries that require using a much larger back cover that turns the G2x into a G2XL.
Hoping there's someone who can prove me wrong. I'm about to buy the G2x for its fantastic specs and low price for use on T-Mobile's prepaid monthly plan. Andida extended battery gets mixed reviews. Same for Prodicell batteries. The one battery for which I'd like to see some results is the "Seidio Innocell 1750mAh Slim Extended Battery for use with LG Thrill 4G, Optimus 3D, LG G2X and Optimus 2X" listed on Amazon.com. (Couldn't post link due to my low post number).
Any thoughts thus far? Will I need to turn my G2x smartphone into a giantphone to get noticeable increases in battery life?

As they say in the automotive world, "There's no replacement for displacement"..
Basically, yeah, if you want a noticeable increase in battery life, then you will need to accept a noticeable increase in battery size. No way around it.
I have seen people spend $50 or more on 'name brand' extended batteries that are the same size as stock, and they rarely give any more battery life than a brand new stock battery.
Think about it - with the phone market as competitive as it is, if there were a battery that offered significant increases in battery life without an increase in size, do you think the major manufacturers would ignore that and allow some Chinese knock-off company to capitalize on it? Not a chance.

You're probably right.
Back in the day (remember when cellphones were, well, just cellphones?) it was just Sanyo and Panasonic and a few other Japanese companies dominating the lithium-ion battery market. Now even Samsung's caught up to them in terms of market share and they've been working overtime to get as much battery life as possible out of their phones. And they have to--check out the competition lately!
Bah. I guess I'm pretty much left to working on every single possible software fix to up my battery life. I'll be reading up on the ROM guides. I hear CM7 is a good rom.
I know you said you didn't want to buy a bigger battery, but assuming you cave in, I can tell you first hand that these batteries actually do last MUCH longer. I can go a full 12 - 16 hours HEAVY usage with "4G". The door itself feels kinda cheap but it's lasted me a good 10 months so far.

i know that a case would make it even thicker... but do they have tpu cases or some type of cover that protects the corners?
I have been looking for something similar, a case for my extended 3500 mAh battery. The back IS larger, of course, the battery appears to be slightly more that double the depth of the stock battery. However, that being said, the design could be worse. I saw another extended battery that was the same size with a god awful protruding rectangle that made the phone look completely off balance. The battery I purchased here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-3500mAh...ccessories&hash=item2a18e3208c#ht_1358wt_1041 looks, eh, alright
But anyways, I figure the only hope is for me to make a mould of the phone, and perhaps build one.

I'm personally hesitant to commit to that battery. I went ahead and got a 3500mah battery. So far, the performance is quite good. It's allowed me to experiment with other rom/kernel packages that aren't as battery-friendly as tsugi, but offer tons of tweaks.

With stock battery and medium-heavy usage I can get 18 hours on EB and Trinity.... I would think I could easily get into the range of 12-16 with Heavy, but you probably mean EXTREMELY heavy usage.
Also, many people said the Andida battery gave them a few hours extra, thought of trying it but when I look at the ebay page for it the packaging looks extremely cheap... Which leads me to believe the battery is probably also very cheaply made and could easily fry your phone.

I've also had good luck with this battery, definitely better than stock. I haven't tested it scientifically, this is purely an anecdotal opinion based on using both for a long time.
i've been using the 3500 mah battery for around 6 months, no problem.
the original 1500 mah battery is bull****, it only supports your phone for like 12 hours max, you have to keep looking at the battery level if you dont want your phone endup dead.
with the extended battery i can go all day long, in heavy 3g mode. yes its bulky, but you will get what you're looking for. luckily i got it with a pair of desktop charger that i put in my office and home desk, so i never miss any recharge.
i dont think 1980 battery will improve a lot, on paper it suppose to add another 2-3 hours of battery time. but compare it with the 3500, and you will have 150% plus on your battery life.
i got it for $9 in spider-foot dot com

1700 mAh -- not hugely better in terms of mAh.. but it makes a big difference for me. the stock battery will not last a whole day (12 hrs) - but I easily get 17-18 hrs from the chichitec.. just saying. .
I have easily gotten >24 hrs in low usage.. i think best was 22hrs to 40%.. but that was wifi and a couple phone calls only on Morfic's XLP-GB kernel.. a bit on the pokey side.. but okay for wifi calling ..

I can confirm that on the stock, my phone lasts 12h on average. I'm using EB with ELP Trinity.
Keep in mind that how much a phone lasts you is a very subjective statistic. You can use a phone much less/more than someone else, and thus the battery life would be longer/shorter. The appearance of the extended 3500mAh batteries is also subjective.
If we're going to be objective here:
The stock battery lasts about 4-6h of active usage (having the screen on, with a data connection, and running applications that actually make use of the CPU). How many hours of light usage/stand-by someone might have in between those 4-6h of usage varies from person to person. (i.e. someone might use their phone heavily for an hour, then have 5h of really light usage/stand-by, then another hour of heavy usage, and so on until a cumulative 4-6h of active usage has been accumulated)
The extended 3500mAh battery, while doubling the thickness of your phone also increases your battery life 150%-200%.
The reviews for extended batteries that are the same size as stock aren't at all consistent. They vary from people saying they perform worse, to people saying they give a much longer battery life. The only battery that has mostly positive reviews is the Anker 1550mAh, which has been told to run cooler and last a bit longer. Of course having only a 50mAh advantage over the stock, the increase in life shouldn't be expected to be too substantial.

That's gotta be the ELP voltages being too low for you and thus causing higher battery drain, try the T15 and undervolt till you find your voltage sweet spot, you will get way better battery than that.
I use my phone pretty heavily through the day, Music, Games, text, web, calls, etc... and I'm getting much higher than 12 hours.

How much of your phones battery is the gear s3 using?

Hi guys! Iam tempted on buying the gear S3 here but its ridiculously expensive where i live and therefore it needs to be near perfect for me to justify the purchase! My main concern is battery life (more so the actual phone then the watch) I understand the theory that your inclined to check your phone less and therefore your phones battery goes further but iam interested in how much actual screen on time your losing!! For example.... If you charge your phone to 100% and you connect your gear s3 to it and leave it for 24hours and in that time you don't use your phone at all! How much would your battery have dropped after 24 hours?
Iam a massive battery junkie and i love how good my phones battery is and for me personally i would rather not use the gear s3 if its gonna kill my phones battery! Even a 1% drop an hour to me would bordering on too much as that would equate to a 24% drop on your phone in 24hours without using ur phone at all!
I normally get 4 days use out of my battery, however I recharge after about 3 days.

Literally no difference? So it virtually uses no battery??

Not literally none obviously, but it is so little that I don't notice it. Less than 1% per hour.
I did a six hour hike the other day, logging the hike on the watch and S-health did take a more noticeable hit on the battery. Like more than 10% but I don't recall that happening on other hikes.
I think the S3 is the best smartwatch currently available. I've had mine for six months and am still very happy with it. But you said a couple of things in your post that give me pause. While I'm OK with spending $350 USD on what is essentially a phone accessory, the S3 is far from the "near perfect" that you may be expecting. Furthermore, your obsession with battery efficiency is a trait that you may find very irritating with smartwatches. Obviously you can do what you want, but I would be remiss if I didn't suggest caution regarding your expectations.

Babying the battery

For the first time ever on my phone, I'm babying the battery on the Pixel 3. I'm only allowing the battery to be in the 50-80% range. Occasionally it will get out of that range but I try not to let that go on for too long. Will this have a noticeable impact on the longevity of my battery? Has anyone ever tried it on a Pixel or Android phone?
I do this on my devices religiously... And while my wife does not, after 18 months with our previous Pixel 2's... Mine carries a noticeable advantage in battery over hers.
On occasion, I will let it fully charge, but not for very long, and never plugged in overnight.
Use your phone and enjoy it. I don't think any efforts like this are worth it, personally.

You are not wrong.
I have been on both sides of this fence over the many years I have been running Android phones. Phones that I ran for 3+ years and swollen/poorly performing batteries if they weren't babied have both went the way of the dodo bird so to speak. My wife and I ran the OG Pixel and Pixel XL pretty much from the beginning until the 3s were released. They basically lived on a charger when not in use, and neither had any depreciation in performance. My only real strict battery usage rule for the past close to 3 years (including some other devices that belong to me, my wife and my sons) is to NEVER use the device while it is charging. The batteries are better as are the chargers and OS battery implementation, and the odds of me using a device long beyond 2 years is pretty slim. Some things like using the right charger and not messing with charging settings are pretty obvious to me. I will admit that I have my own OCD device things like daily reboots and cleanup, but as far as the battery goes I agree with fury that the device is to be used. If I am losing my time and device performance trying to milk a better SoT that doesn't really mean $hit, I am using the device wrong.

Yes, that works, but to what end? Are you planning on keeping your phone for 3 years or so you upgrade every year? It's a good technique for those who want to keep their phone for years.

I just find it to be disappointing and a loss of value that I notice clear degradation every six months or so. When your phone is new and you're away from an outlet for 24 hours, no problem! Fast forward 18 months and that same scenario is a major problem. After 24-30, months I feel I HAVE to upgrade because the battery performance is so mediocre (if not outright poor). That's why I want to know if babying the battery pays noticeable gains in the future.

Why not just spend the $80 and replace the battery after a year or so? If I liked the device that much or I couldn't afford a new one for almost a grand then I'd certainly give that a shot. I think the Pixel 3 replacement is pretty easy and you can do it yourself. I'd drive myself crazy watching the battery level all day long. I think the apps on the device are more important anyway. After a year, a factory reset will probably get more life than a year of what you are doing.

I think that's a hard correlation to make. Usage changes over time. Your battery might last 24 hours no problem on day one, but then you add in a new app that uses more data, or you start playing a game more that uses more battery and you feel like it doesn't last as long. A lot of people say "no, I use all the same apps" and that might be true for 95% of the apps, but all it takes is one to change the battery life.
As others said, if you intend to keep the phone for 2-3+ years, the battery life may be a concern, but if you're planning to upgrade once a year or every other year, I don't think you will see any noticeable gains from worrying about the battery.
When my battery is low, I charge it. I have a Pixel Stand on my desk at work and it sits there most of the day. When I get home I use the phone and plop it on a Choetech wireless pad at night so it's 100% in the morning. It's also on power (albeit low/slow) with Android Auto in my car during my commute both ways. I also have days where I'm away from battery for hours and lose about 1% per hour (fairly standard with Always on Display). I've been doing more or less this same routine with all three of my Pixel XL devices (OG, 2 and now 3) with no issues. The only change with the 3 is that it has wireless charging which makes charging much more seamless.
Hope you enjoy your new phone, however you decide to use it! :good:

The problem with this is alot of manufacturers will stop producing batteries around the same time they stop producing the phones. With my experience I've had a hard time finding batteries that were oem quality, and even if you do, who knows how long that thing has sat on the shelf?
If you're all curious how your battery is degrading over time, download an app called Battery Health. It's a very simple app that tells you what % of the total battery capacity is still available for use. It only took about 2 months for mine to drop into the 90's.
