AT&T / T-Mobile question about Bands?? - General Questions and Answers

I have some interest in the new Samsung Nexus S. It will be launching on T-Mobile. I'm wondering how can I tell if it will work on AT&T? I'm trying to figure out how to tell which bands I need.
http://www.google.com/nexus/#!/tech-specs tells me that it runs on these bands.
Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900
Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700
HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps)
Does any of that equal full 2g / 3g support for AT&T? Also, how do you know?

Someone in another thread posted that you won't get 3G support. Not worth it IMO.
On a side note, I wish google hadn't selected Samsung for the manufacturer of the new Nexus device. I hope the Motorola Olympus doesn't disappoint.

Isn't 2100mhz T-Mobile's AWS band?
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
Yes, the Infuse 4G supports the 2100 MHz band. It is the band for international use.
On the other hand, the T-Mobile AWS band uses 1700 and 2100 MHz together, which does not apply to this phone.
yes, I have has mine run on 850, 1900, and 2100. dialpad *#0011# shows current freq

[Q] aonly working in 2G mode in Mexico

Hi All,
I recently bought a HTC-Sensation 4G from T-Mobile Store in US.
I also purchased an unlock code in the internet.
Getting to Mexico I started the phone and the voice portion worked great...
BUt Data only hooks up at 2G speed, I have a 3G with unlimited data plan...
I have a friend who has an HTC-INSPIRE and his does hookup at HSPA/HSPA+ (3G).
I was told buy a compnay in Mexico that sell a version of the sensation 3G, which they say does have 850 MHZ radio, that T-Mobile Sensations does not have the 850MHZ Band required...
But in various sights I have seen the spec and it says I qoute "Bands 850, 900, 1800, 1900, 2100, 1700"
I have checd the settings menu etc.. and have not found anywhere to change the setting... can someone help?
Thanks,

Sorry, but the US T-Mobile Sensation does not have the 3G 850 frequency. You can't change it. It does support 2G 850, which may be part of the confusion in the frequency listings you've seen. About your only option is to sell it and get the Mexico compatible model.
Your only way arround it is to sell it and get the sensation from bell canada.

Buyer beware.
Lesson one: Every modern phone out there now has quad-band GSM, and will list "850, 900, 1800, 1900" in its frequency list. You know they're talking about GSM (2G) when you see that string of four numbers, because 1800 is a 2G-only band which has never been used for 3G.
Lesson two: If a phone has 850 MHz 3G, you will see the number 850 repeated twice in its band list.
For example:
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS 850/1900 <--- Yes, buy this phone, because you can see 850 repeated twice.
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS 900/2100 <--- No, do not buy this phone, because 850 is listed only once and it's under GSM.
Lesson three: If the only band info you can find is 850/900/1800/1900, then the seller is a lazy douchebag who can't even bother to give you the 3G information you need to know.

Chinese phones on T-Mobile?

Hi guys,
I'm hoping someone can give me a for sure answer on this. I have a company we met at CES offering me some chinese cell phones. Basically they are an S4 knock off. I have definitely decided against selling these, but since I have a really old phone... I'm thinking about buying one for myself to play with.
I am currently on the t-Mobile network. Here is what their website says about "bands"
T-Mobile's UMTS network operates in Band IV, which uses 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz frequencies. Specifically, T-Mobile uses the 1700 MHz frequency to send information to cell sites and then uses the 2100 MHz frequency to receive information. A device must be able to use both frequencies to use T-Mobile's domestic UMTS network.
Most international UMTS networks operate in Band I, which uses the 2100 MHz frequency.

and here is the information about the phone:
MS mode: WCDMA/GSM
Frquency band: WCDMA 2100/850 (HSDPA) and GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Wireless transmission: 3G, WIFI 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.0, EDGE, HSDPA, HSUPA,

Everything sounds like it should work, but the concern is the 850/2100 on WCDMA. T-Mobile claims it uses 1700/2100.
For comparison, here is the t-Mobile Nexus 4
GSM:850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
UMTS: 850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz
Data:HSDPA+ (4G) 42.2 Mbit/s, HSUPA 5.76 Mbit/s, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS

I do understand that the chinese phone is only 3G, and the Nexus I compare to is 4G.
According to what I just read on another tmousa page (which agrees with your quote) their data (3g, 4g, and lte) all work on 1700/2100 as of this date of posting.
From your quote about your phone, it operates on gsm 1800/1900. That does not match with tmo.
I know you probably already figured this out, but I am searching on same subject, so others will follow.
Blessings!

[Q] Will the xt1032 work in Japan?

My gf has the Moto G 2013 (1st Edition) Global GSM xt1032. Will it work in Japan?
Here are the specs from Motorola's website:
Global GSM Model:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
Requires a microSIM card (not included)
GSMareana.com claims Japan supports the following frequencies:
JAPAN
2G capabilities
3G capabilities : UMTS 800, UMTS 900, UMTS 1500, UMTS 1700, UMTS 2100
4G capabilities : LTE 850, LTE 1500, LTE 1800, LTE 2100, LTE 2500
It would appear Japan supports UMTS 900 and 2100 which the xt1032 supports so 3g should work, but I don't know if I am doing this right so I would like confirmation.
Thank you!
I've used mine with no issues for around 5months! I believe Japan uses UMTS 2100.
However, you will probably not be able to use the special mobile email that Japanese networks use.

Can the MetroPCS version of this phone be used on Verizon

Hi there,
I have a MetroPCS Moto E6 and I no longer need it. I would like to give it to my friend who is on the Verizon network and I was wondering if it would work on the Verizon network. I spoke with a customer service rep at MetroPCS and they said they could carrier unlock the phone but that they were not sure if it would work on the Verizon network. Verizon does allow this phone on their network, but they have the Verizon version (XT2005-1) and this is the MetroPCS version (XT2005-3). I looked up the specs (links posted below and found the following...
Verizon Version (XT2005-1)
GSM 1800, 1900, 850, 900
UMTS 900, 850, 2100, 1900, 1700/2100

Can anyone help me out? If I carrier unlocked this phone would I be able to give it to my friend, who would just put his sim card in it and use on the Verizon network?

Sorry for the late reply. The simple answer is no. The MetroPCS variant is locked to T-Mobile's MetroPCS network. While unlocking the device is certainly feasible, this would only enable compatibility for other GSM networks such as AT&T, Net10, H2O, etc. Activating a device on a CDMA network such as Verizon delves off into activation whitelisting, meaning that activation could only occur if your device's IMEI/MEID was included on Verizon's whitelist. Even by unlocking your MetroPCS Moto E6, its identifiers would remain omitted from Verizon's whitelist. Verizon typically only permits its own branded devices and many factory unlocked devices onto its whitelist for activation. I hope this info helps and I wish my info was more favorable to your cause. By the way, you done a great job taking the time to compare the two devices with regard to network frequencies and bands. Ironically, if your question was vice versa, with regard to using a MetroPCS SIM in a Verizon Moto E6, the answer would be yes -- most certainly. Due to the whitelisting nature of activating Verizon service on a device, it just isn't possible with your scenario.
