Has anyone been able to get keyboard replacements to work?
I installed 'iphone keyboard' and 'slide IT keyboard Demo', and both show up in Settings -> Language & Keyboard -> but when you try to enable them, you get the warning about keystroke sniffing and if you click OK they still are not enabled.
I mostly want this for Voice input on all fields and something similar to Swype.
While I am at it, I would love it if, from Home Screen I could hit Menu, Settings, to get to the settings screen.
I do like the way the Settings screens work, layering what are separate activity screens next to each other on the tablet. Something Google should keep in mind for Honeycomb, it is a great way to make use of the extra real estate of the Tablet and should be an easy conditional for programmers, or even the OS to take into account depending on device type (user agent?)
I ramble, time for bed
Day 2 of my GTablet changed me from a returner to a keeper.
Thanks xda.
Johnny

to be clear, the only way to replace the keyboard apk in TnT lite 2.2 is to use a pay app (root explorer)?
With slideit keyboard are the a an return buttons hard to press? I seem to have trouble with all the non stock keyboards

If you're comfortable with command line, you can do it w/o root explorer:
Root using z4root
Use a terminal to
Mount /system R/W
Copy the apk from /data/app to /system/app
Change apk perms
Reboot
There's an app in market called system r/w that can do the remount, and many terms under market.

I had a very similar problem with the a and l (L) keys. There is a weird fix that worked for me. Search the g tablet developers forum for "configuration.ini".

Yes you do, you have to have root to be able to replace system files.
Root is not yet possible on the Mytouch.
it is being worked on but for now you must stick to Googles keyboard
and or buy "better keyboard" from the market
Actually you dont have to have root I was able to install it on my Mytouch without any problems. Check out my post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=539818

So I flashed Flipz Rom, and fell in love with the HTC_ime keyboard mod that doesnt include the arrows that the stock HTC keyboard does... I flashed Damagecontrol and it didn't include it, so I went hunting for it and found it in the N1 forums.
-No arrows to get in your way like the stock keyboard
-Very customizable

Its not a mod. Its a whole different keyboard. You have to activate it in the settings and then long press on any text field and change it from Touch Input to this.

So does it make the other buttons grow a lil or they are the same size, but the directional buttons are just gone.
If I rename the file and keep the same extension will it load up ok? It should right?
tried this but don't like it.. eventhough it removed the arrow keys, but it's missing the "hide keyboard" key. I use that often when typing in username password on websites that are zoomed in..
^ Hitting back removes the keyboard if it's up. Just saying, so no need for the keyboard drop down button.
I simply assigned swipe-down gesture to hide the keyboard. Convenient.
Different colors at the bottom, delete the color from the file name when placing on sdcard. i.e. blueupdate.zip > update.zip
MUST BE DEODEXED
All Swypes have matching tracers
All these are for 2.2, there is no reason you shouldnt be on 2.2
Original images from bilbobrian, just some extra days on my part getting it to you
As always do a back up
If on 2.2 and have boot strapper installed to use this update .zip, throw it on sd card, open droid x bootstraper reboot to recovery, apply update.zip, reboot done!
........ without bootstrapper method...........
if you want just the apk for a different color just extract it from the update.zip file
use root explorer or other app to make a copy of your original app ( its in system/app)
First you must remove swype.apk from system/app
any way of your choosing, terminal or adb, then reboot.
follow the following directions
Put the .apk on your sdcard, navigate to it with astro or your fav file browser, open the apk and choose install. If it still says only gives you the option to uninstall, you didnt uninstall correctly.
if you can get it to show up after install go into settings and keyboard and make sure swype is checked
DONE
................ If you somehow botched it...............
restore your back up.
If you were careless enough to not do a back up and your on 2.2 get a clean download here.. MY droid world 2.2 follow those instructions.
then download file again, your last one might of been bad. When in recovery go to mounts and mount system, then install the zip

Finally got the Black Droid Does themed swype working. This is for the X only, landscape mode is different than other versions out there.
Want it?
First you must take full responsibility for the actions you are about to take.
Download the attached link. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QVWKWYK8 Put the .apk on your sdcard.
*optional (using astro or root explorer) Navigate to your system/app folder, find the existing swype.apk and rename to .bak
Open terminal emulator on your X
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/Swype.apk /system/app
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
Open a text box and verify. Its that easy
This cannot be done by copy and paste in root explorer.
Credit goes to
teenfaces (xdaforum) for the code used to make this work
bilbobrian (xdaforums) I think he themed this for other phones (please correct me if it wasnt originally him)

No, idea. Why would you have a different swype than me? Might want to try to delete your original swype (by root explorer) then just install mine.
Edit: forgot to mention, you sir RAWK, I requested this in a couple diff forums with no response... Do you have a buy me a 6 button? can't see it from tapatalk but I'll gladly click when opportunity comes... I have the same issue... I can upload the apk straight from my settings, but need to know how to do out straight from my phone.... I'm on the road
op updated, praise the android gods for wireless tether.
New apk straight from my settings and one that i just removed the mic pngs from.
The stats for download said 28 downloads, so is this a hit or miss with peoples phones?
If your removing the swype before pushing this one try leaving it there then push the new one. That is how I did it. Strange thing is if you open up the apk and look at the images there is no button for the mic....
Im not going to be able to tether tomorrow, will have spotty service at best. I will try and get on here when I can though, keep me posted.

I downloaded both of the links on the OP. the "NEW UPLOAD" file still showed the Voice Mic. The one labeled without mic (Duhh ) did indeed take the mic off my keyboard.
Seems to be working great. Thanks for your work.

You are correct. I never really use it, and it looks just like the Voice search box, so I just assumed it was the same.
Zaphod-- (for the geeks out there)
Ok, so i unstalled the themed swype, reinstalled the stock swype. It gave me the space for the mic button but did nothing when pressed. If anyone has the original still there does the mic appear on your and does it do anything?
Anyways, with the stock swype on my phone, recompiled a different themed swype and placed it on my phone. Still no mic button (was never in this build to begin with) and no voice search opens when tapping in that area.
Follow new link for v0.3 and new instructions.

Then i move it on my sdcard an copy&paste to system/app/ check the permissions "gbkb-2.1.apk" must have the same permission like the other files in the folder.

So a complete "How to" for the newbees:

Install it like a normal app.
Check the "Gingerbread Keyboard" box in settings "Keyboard and Language"
Open for instance SMS and when you are on the text input field long press on it.

hmm, there must be a way to keep this working when you reboot besides let LCD Sensity run over and over again. For me it's no problem, I hardly reboot the phone and the keyboard is worth waiting the extra 2 minutes .... Nevertheless, there must be some way... nice challenge
Hackers Keyboard is the only soft keyboard I found that has arrow keys and needs no permissions but is ugly as sin.
Swype keyboard doesn't work and needs internet access. People must be very trusting to install a keyboard that needs internet access.
So any recommends for a soft keyboard?
Most of the keyboards are for phones so they don't take full advantage of the larger screened tablets like the nexus.
I am trying out keyboards.

I used to use Thumb Keyboard on all my Tablets but it crashes on the Nexus 9.

Any keyboard that supports themes will need Internet permission. The keyboard doesn't need an active connection in order to function.
It would be really nice if Thumb Keyboard could have a few material themes put together next, been using it on all of my tablets since my Xoom.
