Question: Movies on cappy?

i got some 700mb avi movies and dropped it on my phone. it said it could not play. do i need to resize it or is it an encoder issue? maybe the file size is too big? idk!

What player are you trying to use?

use rockplayer or vplayer, I had played 2.7gb mkv 720p movie with no issue.

Try the program "handbrake" with high profile settings

Are you using a custom rom? Because I have been watching 700 mb .avi and great big hd .mkv with no problem, on both stock and newest cognition. Only format I HAVE had a problem with is m2ts.

I use PavTube Ultimate Blu-Ray Converter to make Xvid MP4 files out of my discs. They work great on the Captivate. I played around with different settings and there really isn't much visual difference between using the native 800x480 resolution compared to HD rez, but the difference in file size is significant.

I get the same issues with some AVI's in both Rockplayer and the stock player on the stock rom. Haven't tried movies since flashing to Cognition 2.3b7. MKV's don't typically play in rockplayer, the few that have skipped a ton, or they would play with no audio. Not sure what you guys are doing to your movies to make them play. All of my videos are encoded properly, and play on my WD TV Live just fine. The WD is a good test of media quality for rips.

The WD TV Live also can play pretty much any audio and video codec you throw at it.

There have been mkv's that have not played correctly on it, so if it's not encoded properly, the WD is a good test, from my experience.

I have some 700mb xvid movies on my phone and they play fine on stock rom w/stock player. But I highly recommend vplayer for video and rtsp watching.

Requirements:
Installed copy of Handbrake software
Video files and or DVD of your choice
Samsung Captivate with microUSB cable
Step I: Launch the Handbrake application on your computer and select the video source
In the menu on the right-hand side, select the iPod Legacy preset (figure 1)
Select your video source by clicking on the Source dropdown menu (we used a DVD for our testing purposes)
Select the destination and name for the file once it has been converted (both the .mp4 and .m4v extension work for the Captivate)
Confirm that the container is set to MP4 File and that Large file size, Web optimized, and iPod 5G support are unchecked
Step II: Adjust Handbrake's Video Settings
Picture Tab:
Uncheck Keep Aspect Ratio
Set the Captivated Width and Height (the Captivate supports a maximum of 800 x 480 pixels)
Video Tab:
Confirm the Video Codec is set as H.264 (x264)
Framerate (FPS) should be set to Same as source
Under Quality, select the Avg Bitrate (kbps) and change it to 1500
Step III: Adjust audio settings
Confirm the Audio Codec is AAC (faac)
Mixdown should be set to Stereo
Change the Samplerate to 48
Change the Bitrate to 160
Step IV: Save as a preset for future use
Click on the Presets menu and select New Preset
Enter Captivate in the dialog box and click Add
"Captivate" will now be saved as a preset and listed on the right hand side in Handbrake to be used in the future
Step V: Convert the video and copy to your Captivate
Click on the Start button in Handbrake
A command line/DOS window will open and start to process the video conversion
Once the conversion is done, mount your Captivate on to your computer via USB
Once mounted, create a folder named Video in the root folder on the Captivate
Copy converted file into the Video folder
That's it! The converted video can now be played on your Captivate using the Gallery app. It should look fantastic on the Captivate's screen as long as the original source was of good quality.
A few things to keep in mind when converting video:
The Captivate does not like video file sizes over 2GB (the settings in Step II should help insure that the file size is kept under 2GB)
Your converted video will only be as good as the source video
If your source is over 800 x 480, you must be sure to set the width and height to a maximum of 800 x 480 as noted in Step II

ditto. no problems with xvid or mkv files of that size.
i hate converting! all i want is drag, drop and play.. easy as that.

I don't know what went wrong, I can just say I'm running same cog rom you are and so far .mkv, .avi and .mp4 work just fine for me on the stock vid player :-/

Tried Handbrake using the settings above and the video was garbage. I'll stick with Pavtube as it converts anything I throw at it in any format without issue and it does Blu-Ray, as well. Looks like 1500 bit rate is the sweet spot for good video quality and manageable file size.

I believe all you have to click is High profile on the right side , that is it

I don't think u would need to convert any vids for the captivate. Captivate by itself plays a variety of formats

Actually, since I'm ripping mostly Blu-Ray discs, they DO need to be converted. And I did a check ripping standard DVD to both mpg2 and mp4. A 50mb mpg2 rip was about 3:40 (min:seconds) whereas the same settings ripped to mp4 was closer to 4:20. Over the span of a complete movie, the mp4 conversion will yield a smaller file size.

Trouble ripping movies to my TBolt...

I have been using an older version of DVDFab v8.0.7.3 to convert dvd's to m4v files to watch on my phones. All of my older movies play fine. Anything I convert now with this newer version will not play. They will play fine on my computer but not my TBolt. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyone familiar with DVDFab v8.0.8.5 feel like giving me a little heads up?

What are you using to play the video. Try a different player.

I have the stock video player and the 3d gallery one. But that still doesn't explain why my older videos work and the newer one don't unless there is a problem with the new program I'm ripping from vs the older version.

I've used Badaboom, Xilisoft Video and AVS to convert videos. If you're really nuts like me, first you use SlySoft to remove the DRM from the DVD in your computer's optical drive. Then I use 1ClickDVDCopyPro to rip the DVD into a folder on my hard drive.
From that hard drive folder I use AVS Video Converter (v7) to create a video from the profile for Android devices with some slight modifications. I change the frame size to 800x480 or 720x480. I also change the audio down to 128kbps (just to save space). The bitrate for the video I go between 800 and 1500, depending. For documentaries and dramas, 800 to save space and 1500 for action movies to give a cleaner video playback.
Then use RockPlayer (download the ARM v7 - don't use the universal player) to playback the MP4 video. That's the best success I've had with converting my own video.
Usually anything that I download from the Internet, I use the Xilisoft Video Converter (v6.5.3) to create pretty much the same thing as the DVD rips. The reason I don't use Xilisoft for DVD rips is the way it reads the IFO files from DVD's. The AVS software is pretty intuitive for the files based on the IFO. I also try to download the highest quality I can find so I don't lose much in re-encoding the video to a lower bitrate.

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention. I've used Badaboom, but found it slow and didn't seem to make my video conversions better or equal to the AVS or Xilisoft converters. Hard to tell on the TB because of the small screen, but when viewed on the computer it looks worse by comparison.
Plus, the Xilisoft CUDA seems to work faster (I have a new Intel Sandy Bridge with a GTX 460 for processing) than the Badaboom. Xilisoft converts 4 videos at a time on my computer, each hour long video taking about 15-20 minutes to complete (simultaneously). Very nice.

Well... I tried that Rock Player and it works okay. I still can't figure out for the life of me why my other videos play when they were created the same way as the newer ones. Rock player seems to play them fine and the stock player plays the avi files I created I just don't think they look as good as the m4v ones I made previously. I guess I'm just going to have to fool around with it alot more to get things figured out.

For newer movies, DVDFAB to remove the protection then Handbrake to convert. DVDFAB is free for just ripping DVDs but they don't make that really known on their website. This is possibly the most fool-proof way to do it but it also gives you plenty of options if you're into that.

[Q] Subtitles in video files

So the stock browser doesn't play M4V embedded subtitles. Booo. I'm thinking either I have to re-encode all my videos and hard sub them or switch to another player that will software decode. No other player seems to support embedded subs though. I have to put SRTs in the same directory.
mVideoPlayer has so far been the best option in order to actually change the size so the subs don't come out tiny.
So:
1. Are there any other players that so far support hardware decoding and also support subtitles? - Don't want to waste battery.
2. Are there any players that support embedded subtitles in an m4v? (not hardsubs)
3. What is the best program for hardsubbing an SRT? I usually use handbrake but it doesn't want to burn in the subs. I want control over the font and shadow too to get decent quality.

Sorry, the "delete" was for my post, since before my edit, I wrote about mVideoPlayer without realizing you've already tried it...

1. Vplayer
2. I tried a lot, and as far as I remember, none of them was able to find a subtitle track on a mp4 video file.
3. Handbrake. You have first to convert your srt into an ssa file, then merge with mkvmerge the ssa file to the original mkv,
and handbrake will then be able to handburn your srt file. You probably have to apply a patch (I wrote the patch, look for
decssasub.c), because handbrake was not able to handburn srt2ssa converted files.
Hope this help, it's really a pain to watch subtitles movie on a transformer, it does not play straightforward mkv files, you
have to convert them and so one.
Another solution would be to use plex media server, which is able to transcode movie, and which is avoiding the pain to
convert movie files, but unfortunately the plex android client does not support subtitles at this moment.
We're stuck to poor solutions.

Vplayer does not hardware decode. It does seem like a good player though. Managed to get handbrake to burn in using ssa instead of srt subs and bubbled to convert them. Still not great though.

Does anoyone have an answer for my problem? i have .srt files downloaded and they play like they should with mvideoplayer. But when i connect to my tv with hdmi, i see the subtitle on my tablet and not on the tv.
This really is pretty stupid. is there any player or app which can output my subtitles on my tv without me having to "burn them in"?

MX VideoPlayer uses hardware decoding. There're options to choose between that and software decoding. It also has subtitle options (font, size, alignment, etc.).
I used DVDFab to get subtitles to show in a m4v flick. Had to click around with some of the subpicture options and then check it out in the preview screen to see if the subs would show; after a few tries, got the subs to only show up to translate and not during the entire film. Subs also show up in the stock player.

i found that the only way of displaying this subtitles to hdmi is to burn them in with handbrake. But handbrake does not support burn in of .srt files.
Anyone know an alternative which is simple?

mobo player, plus install codec corresponding to your CPU (ARM V6) all from the market.
Then place the .srt with strictly the same file name as you video file, play it with Mobo and subs should just show up.

I'm now re-encoding everything using XviD4PSP which is free and allows you to burn in the subtitiles. Seeing as I'm transcoding most stuff to h264 mainline anyway, I might as well add subs. The main problem is that this software is slower than handbrake. It does accept SRTs though. Jubbler is good for converting and editing subtitile files.
I play using moboplayer and mVideoPlayer. mVideoPlayer plays with hardware decoding and allows you to change the size of SRT subs if you are using SRT. The other players show text too small.
Life would be so much better if stock played embedded subtitles in an m4v though!

[Q] Fixing avi files for Android/moboplayer

Bought a Xoom recently and one of the major things I'm using it for is to watch movies and TV while I'm at my desk. I'm playing the files straight over the network, but I'm finding a lot of my files won't play (using MoboPlayer) They'll open, play for a half second, then close. Going into Mobo and forcing the software decoder for the file works about half the time. Seems like most of the time it's just a minor error in the AVI that's throwing the player off. I can open the it in avidemux, just save it to a new file, and the new file will play fine. I've got several hundred movies and tv episodes on my file server at this point, so it'd be difficult to fix those one at a time with avidemux. Can any one suggest something else to use?

You could try transcoding one to a mobile friendly format like MP4 using Handbrake. If it works without a hitch you can batch transcode all of them if necessary.

As a common sense, AVI(DivX, XviD) is not a friendly format for Android. To play AVI movies on Android is to change AVI to Android compatible formats like MP4. To achieve it, you can use an AVI converter to encode AVI to Android friendly MP4 and then transfer the file to your Android. Handbrake is a good suggestion and Brorsoft Video Converter is also a good one.

Can't agree more, I think you'd better encode AVI to Android format before playing the videos.

[Q] DVD / Bluray ripping?

I have some mkv files on my desktop of the kids blu rays, but I'm looking for something to put it onto the tablet for a plane ride we have to take without having to lug the portable dvd player around. I was thinking about putting some of the files onto my old 7" SGT for my daughter and wondered what might be a decent way to do so. I read about handbrake a little, but wasn't successful in the past when I was trying it out (decryption problems). That was a while back, but wondered if anyone is using anything more current that might help me out.
In addition... is MKV workable on the tf700? It's going to gobble up a ton of SD space but might be fun...

first, try this:
drag the videos to your device, and then download DicePlayer or MX Player (diceplayer if my fav when it comes to mkv). Try playing the videos with either app.
if you experience issues, you can convert using handbrake (i havent used this app in a while), or you can go with DVDCatalayst, my preferred method. It has tons of preset for all devices and is easy to use. I convert 4gb blu ray movies all the time. Shrinks them down to about 1 to 2gb, depending on which preset you use. You have the option to go smaller or bigger.

Another good player is BSPlayer (incase you want to try). Like timrock says, most files play just fine. I'm also using Wondershare player to play DVD's (like VIDEO_TS files), but Dice/BS can both play vob files too.

Are you ripping out to VIDEO_TS folders or can you make a single MKV file to make it easier to transport? I only used MKV's for blu rays but I assume it would compact the DVD's down a little from their full size a little?

I just put a 20gb bluray rip on my 64gb microsd, movie plays great with bsplayer. Keep in mind only h.264 videos will work. Blurays with vc1 video will fail.

One of the main advantages of a droid tablet is you don't have to convert the vast majority of titles out there. I spent so much time ripping stuff to my ipods and psp before. With tegra 3 and mxplayer, I can play basically everything.

Personally, when I have MKVs, I use XMedia Recode to recode them to MP4 -- it lets me copy the video without re-encoding, which takes only about 5 minutes to re-encode a 2 hr 1080p video. I do this for both my phone, tablet, and PS3 media server.

This method will not work with mkvs that come from vc1 based blurays. Mp4 can't contain vc1 video and so far nothing can play vc1 on infinity with HW accel.

I must be doing something wrong - it takes at least a 1/2 hour to recode a mkv rip of a full length movie.

You sure it's actually re-encoding it and not just transcoding it? E.g. is the size about the same as before?
MKV and MP4 are just container formats, you're just wrapping the actual video and audio streams into different container formats, really. Transcoding is pretty much just copying the streams which is fast (usually limited by disk speed), while re-encoding is a heavy CPU/GPU task. Even with Quick Sync it'd take quite a bit longer for a 90+ min movie.

Correct all that tool is doing is repackaging the video and probably transcoding the audio into stereo, into MP4. If you use BS player there is no real reason to do this.

Fifth Element mkv is 27gb so I have to transcode it... guess I am doing it right after all...

I tried this method and was pretty smooth, but I find the brightness of the converted movie 'hunts' up and down a bit during playback. Not quite sure how the various options work, but is there something to check?

Handbrake Preset for the TF700
I have been doing this with Handbrake for a while now - But not for the Infinity! I want to take advantage of this new fangled Full HD Screen.
QUESTION:
Does anyone have a 1080p Preset that they have created and verified as working for the Infinity? I did a few google searches but they either use a different piece of SW or are focused on 720P!

i downloaded a 1080p copy of Hunger Games, i think it was about 12gbs. It played fine with BS Player. No conversion required.

Just FYI, torrenting movies is illegal, _even if you own the movie_. Why? B/c you are still giving away the movie to others (peers) while you are downloading it. Just sayin'

BS Player will play your MKV movies without you having to re-encode them.
