[REQ] Working AOSP Keyboard for Sense ROMs - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

Searched around here and found a few posted, but none of them seemed to work. Tired installing through Astro and ADB on Frost ROM. Both times, when changing to Android Keyboard input method and going to type into a text box, I get an immediate FC on the keyboard.
Anyone have a good APK?

In an effort to quickly get you something that is useable, I would point you in the direction of the Droid Multi Touch Keyboards. They are rather similiar in look and feel to the AOSP keyboards.
EDIT: I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for, but it satisfied my need for an AOSP keyboard for the longest time so I figured I would at least share. Hope this helps at least somewhat.

Thanks alot, I was going to give that a shot, but I had the DroidX and I hated that keyboard. But I guess it can't be worse than the HTC keyboard... or can it?
I will give it a try, thanks! Anyone else know of any that work?

Hero Keyboard

What are the odds that we can just pull the keyboard from the current hero rom and implement it into the cupcake... because at this point that is really the only reason i want the hero rom... at least a main reason
I know alot of people would agree with me
let me know!

The Keyboard? You mean the htc keyboard (HTC_IME.apk)? because thats been ported to other builds already.
Oh dear
this thread needs to be locked..........Dude , do the search and ye shall find the keyboard.
think its called the htc ime or something of the sort.
theres already a thread about this

to do it from the terminal
way to jump on his case without doing a little research yourself. i believe he is talking about the multi-touch keyboard support on the htc hero device. and now to actually help you answer your question....
i really do not know why....
i haven't taken any time to search through the build.
but im gonna take a wild guess and think it has something to do with the multi touch...
i hope that helped...
question.
Since the Hero sence UI has multi-touch support. Does this mean the Hero Keyboard has multi-touch as well?
lol not that i've seen from anything about the actual phone, much less the builds
Multitouch keyboard? What would be the point in that? You could hold shift while typing on a screen that small it would be too fiddly to be useful, no reason for it anyway (unless I'm missing something obvious). Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the multitouch was have at the moment emulated anyway? So it couldn't detect two different points just the distance between two points.. again I could be wrong, that was my understanding.
hero keyboard sucks!
actually hero's keyboard is very different from the normal htc keyboard. the pop-up keys pop up faster (way faster, so it's useful like android keyboard), the layout of the alt-pages are different, and the period is always present in all the screens. i would love to have hero's keyboard in cupcake.
I delete htc ime from the hero builds.. it gets on my tits popping up all the time and suggesting words when i'm using the hardware keyboard.
Waste of time on a phone with a proper keyboard imo.

amen!, I removed all IME from the build I use. Nothing like the actual feel of keys, btw, did you say tits?
nothing like being able to text with one hand though
I wish someone would mod the HTC_IME to allow swipe gestures (up=shift, down=close, left=delete, right=alternate)
Who wants a challenge??

I'm not sure and correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Better Keyboard use the same word library as the android keyboard? I much prefer the HTC library! Although I may still give Better Keyboard a shot.

Stock keyboard

Hey guys, I was wondering if there's a way to get the normal android stock keyboard on my HTC hero (Sprint). Thanks!
Jason
i was wondering this as well?
is the stock keyboard more responsive or quicker then htc's? ido love htc keyboard but if stock is any quicker and faster i might try that
Using the search function of the site pulled up this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5223276
Once again, using the SEARCH function I was able to find that in no time at all. Try it sometime.
Not trying to be a **** about it but yeah... Anyway try swype. It is pretty awesome once you get used to it. I wasn't convinced that I was typing faster using swype but when I flashed a rom that put me back on the HTC keyboard I realized just how slow and weird it felt to tap the keys instead of drawing on the keyboard. Not that I suggest it, but it makes it much easier to text and drive as well. But don't do that. Focus on the xda-forum search for now. Its up at the top.
already tried swype, liked it just wanna try stock, and on that post noone can get it to work

AOSP Keyboard

The XDA keyboard is great an all, but I've really loved the AOSP Keyboard on the older DarchLegend roms. I don't see it on any of his new roms, and i can't find an .apk for it.
I've searched for awhile, no luck. Anyone know where it's at?
are you talking about the OEM android keyboard? if so then i second that. i'd love to find out how to get the keyboard back. i hate the htc keyboard with a passion
Yeah. The HTC keyboard, and our version of it, arent great. I also find them very laggy at times; I have to type very slowly and deliberately, which isn't cool.
This should work, just flash from recovery.
http://www.mediafire.com/?qjymjydmw0m
EDIT: Works with latest Sprint Leak, but also works with old Legend leak.
So try it on the new
Perfect, thanks!
So I flashed this keyboard and it shows up under my Keyboard settings but the HTC Keyboard still shows up when I want to type. Is there something I'm missing? I'm using a flashed version of the Sprint 2.1 leak.

Awesome, thanks a bunch. I've only had the phone for a week. Learn something new every day hehe
I tried out this keyboard, and it's no faster than the HTC keyboard. Swype seems like the only input method that isn't ridiculously laggy on this phone.

Not in my experience. With the sound and vibration off, it's just as fast as the sense keyboard with sound and vibration off, same goes for them both on. Also, it keeps giving me nonsensical autocorrections. It tries to correct common words like "an" to "Android".

to each it's own i guess.
this keyboard makes my life a lot easier
what i'm really interested in is how to do it for future apps?
It seems that alot of cooks are cooking in the XDA Sense keyboard and I have found it extremely laggy. Glad I found this to install. Thanks.
When I installed the AOSP keyboard, the a and l both have gaps on the side of them and are transparent, is there any way to fix this?
Using the keyboard in Darchdroid has made me like my phone again. The HTC keyboard is so painfully laggy its mindnumbing. The stock Android keyboard is instant and accurate, love it.

Same here. I have been using it for awhile and I like it alot more. The keys are smaller which as I get more accurate I have found I can type faster than on the htc keyboard.

change keyboard color

I am sorry if this has been asked already, the search feature isn't working and keeps telling me to try again in 10 minutes which I waited I think 15 minutes and it still didn't work and gave me the same message.
Anyways, I was wondering if there is a way to change the keyboard colors yourself? I know there is a way to use a site that's been passed around. However, I am curious if there is a way to do it yourself if that makes sense?
If so, where do I find the keyboard stuff so I can edit it? Or how do you go about editing it? I just would like to try and design my own theme if that is possible.
Thanks for any help, I'd appreciate it.
Anyone know of a tutorial or anything? I'm really interested in trying this. I would highly appreciate any information or helpful pointers. Thanks!
Still interested in learning if anyone is willing to point me to some information that I could use to learn how to make my own theme from scratch.
What type of keyboard?

Just wanted to make a theme or whatever for the android keyboard I have on my phone now, the latest gingerbread keyboard.
Since you arent getting much help I would recommend you using the smart keyboard... that is much better than the gingerbread.... and you can use skins with that one too... if you need help getting it just PM me...
Does it run pretty much the same as the gingerbread keyboard? The reason I'm asking is because I am so used to using the standard gingerbread keyboard that I am scared to try a different one, lol
Okay, I am currently running Smart Keyboard, and I have a skin that I have edited, however I am unable to figure out how to get it to show up in the list of skins. I have created a folder named skins on both the internal phone storage and the sd card but I am unable to get it to show up in the list of skins. I am not entirely sure what I am doing wrong. I did leave it as a *.zip file when I placed it into the skins folder on my phone not sure if that is the problem I am doing wrong or if I'm missing a step. I don't know.
Any helpful information with that would be appreciated. Thanks!
I'd you download the gingerbread keyboard from the market one of the available and free ones has skins.

I tried that already and wanted to try something else, doesn't seem like anything is working for me. Oh well.
Thanks for your help guys.

[KEYBOARD] Stock Gingerbread Keyboard without smiley key

That damn smiley key was driving me insane, so I got the Gingerbread keyboard source from AOSP, got it to compile, and got rid of the smiley face button, replacing it with a return key. Other than that, it's identical to the stock Android gingerbread keyboard, so requires 2.3+. Eventually I may figure out how to make it able to be turned on and off, but that would rather defeat the point. Enjoy!
(Note: you have to enable it in the Keyboard settings before you can use it, just like any other keyboard.)
The Eclipse project (source) is available here.
hate to break it to you but people did that months ago lol. I've been using this exact keyboard since before Christmas I think, right down to the removed smiley key haha
Still, at least you got some practice....

Really? Cause I have never found such a keyboard. I found one that the smily key works as a space and then doesn't work after that, and I found a modified smiley key one where the "-" is removed.
Wish this worked with Android 2.2. Is it safe to try?
I won't use this this I use Smart Keyboard Pro, but props for taking matters into your own hands..

I guess it's safe in that it won't damage anything, but it also won't install I may be able to recompile it in a way that makes it play nice with froyo, but I haven't tried yet. Maybe I will today.
Also, I did find the same thing somewhere else, but if I'm not mistaken it had a theme I didn't like and the method to get rid of it wasn't worth the time for me. If nothing else, I got to practice compiling individual apps from the AOSP
EDIT: I had no luck getting it to work with 2.2. I updated the OP with the Eclipse project source if anyone wants to give it a shot.

I own Smart Keyboard Pro, but my only complaint is that it's laggy and slow. Compared to the stock Gingerbread Keyboard or the one in the market by Steven Lin, those fly and pump out rapid letters when you are typing fast, but with Smart Keyboard Pro, it lags behind, and it frustrates me.
