The XDA keyboard is great an all, but I've really loved the AOSP Keyboard on the older DarchLegend roms. I don't see it on any of his new roms, and i can't find an .apk for it.
I've searched for awhile, no luck. Anyone know where it's at?
are you talking about the OEM android keyboard? if so then i second that. i'd love to find out how to get the keyboard back. i hate the htc keyboard with a passion
Yeah. The HTC keyboard, and our version of it, arent great. I also find them very laggy at times; I have to type very slowly and deliberately, which isn't cool.
This should work, just flash from recovery.

EDIT: Works with latest Sprint Leak, but also works with old Legend leak.
So try it on the new
Perfect, thanks!
So I flashed this keyboard and it shows up under my Keyboard settings but the HTC Keyboard still shows up when I want to type. Is there something I'm missing? I'm using a flashed version of the Sprint 2.1 leak.

Awesome, thanks a bunch. I've only had the phone for a week. Learn something new every day hehe
I tried out this keyboard, and it's no faster than the HTC keyboard. Swype seems like the only input method that isn't ridiculously laggy on this phone.

Not in my experience. With the sound and vibration off, it's just as fast as the sense keyboard with sound and vibration off, same goes for them both on. Also, it keeps giving me nonsensical autocorrections. It tries to correct common words like "an" to "Android".

this keyboard makes my life a lot easier
what i'm really interested in is how to do it for future apps?
It seems that alot of cooks are cooking in the XDA Sense keyboard and I have found it extremely laggy. Glad I found this to install. Thanks.
When I installed the AOSP keyboard, the a and l both have gaps on the side of them and are transparent, is there any way to fix this?
Using the keyboard in Darchdroid has made me like my phone again. The HTC keyboard is so painfully laggy its mindnumbing. The stock Android keyboard is instant and accurate, love it.

Same here. I have been using it for awhile and I like it alot more. The keys are smaller which as I get more accurate I have found I can type faster than on the htc keyboard.

Hey guys, I was wondering if there's a way to get the normal android stock keyboard on my HTC hero (Sprint). Thanks!
Jason
i was wondering this as well?
is the stock keyboard more responsive or quicker then htc's? ido love htc keyboard but if stock is any quicker and faster i might try that
Using the search function of the site pulled up this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5223276
Once again, using the SEARCH function I was able to find that in no time at all. Try it sometime.
Not trying to be a **** about it but yeah... Anyway try swype. It is pretty awesome once you get used to it. I wasn't convinced that I was typing faster using swype but when I flashed a rom that put me back on the HTC keyboard I realized just how slow and weird it felt to tap the keys instead of drawing on the keyboard. Not that I suggest it, but it makes it much easier to text and drive as well. But don't do that. Focus on the xda-forum search for now. Its up at the top.
already tried swype, liked it just wanna try stock, and on that post noone can get it to work

I dont know how many of you all knw about this i did a search and no thread came up so im sharing info. Im running the latest damage, and i found this keyboard app in the market called ThickButtons, its easily the best keyboard out there that ive ever used in my opinion. What it does is when youre typing it makes the keys that it assumes you want to click big, like it enlarges the letters so that it makes it easier to type. Also it never lags dudes. I encourage you guys to give thickbuttons a try i fell in love with it. I looked for it in 1.5 but it seems to only be in the newest market. enjoy this info if you care. When you guys try it come let me know if you agree with me.

I tried this and I had more lag and I'm use to the buttons where they are and when this app makes keys bigger I hit the wrong button. My stock keyboard runs with almost no lag.

Holy crap. The lag on this keyboard is horrendous.
I just went into sms and typed "This is a test for the new thick buttons keyboard". I then set the phone down, and 45 seconds later it finished typing it out, and it said "This id w trdt of thw nee tjivk nuttins keubiatd".
I'll try rebooting, maybe that will fix it.

wow!! we have a few different thoughts on this kb. But &roid rage is a reliable source so ill have to pass. swype, android and htc kb are all built into my rom so this is no great loss. Personally i dont really use any kb on a phone since i hate them, but if i MUST be tortured, for me its a tie between the swype swype, and the android kb responsiveness

Hmm, not sure you are right about this. This keyboard is for sure great,.but gingerbread keyboard has all important base base features, like multi touch key combos. It also looks attracting. And best, we will have full sources for it, which makes it much more easy to expand.
It might attract an active developer, time will show....

I really hope this is possbile on the nexus s. The HTC IME keyboard is absolutely indispensible to me. It in my experience has by far the best spell correction out of any keyboard I've tried. No other keyboard can I mess a word up so bad, add in a few extra letters than the word has, or not have enough, and it will still figure out what I'm trying to say.

Big thanks, gimpsta. I've been playing around with the keyboard generator since last night and it's an awesome service :]
I also have a wild, nubby question:
Probably the only thing I love about the stock Froyo keyboard is the upward-swipe gesture that extends the number and punctuation rows above the qwerty layout. The long-press method on HTC IME is alright, but not quite as fast (for me) as the upward-swipe.
Is that something that's even possible to incorporate into this mod? Or is it sort of an apples to oranges kind of thing?
Thanks for keeping everything up to date. If I know myself well enough, I'll be back to your generator in about two days to whip up another layout
You can set long press delay to 250 ms which is much faster to me than swype up on stock kb.
Love the keyboard!
Mainly using Swype now but HTC_IME mod still rocks

Thanks buddy! Thits what I get for not digging deep enough in the settings. I got too dazzled by the swipe features and missed out in that option-- it's totally what I wanted. What stock Froyo keyboard? :]
is it possible to get some features like multitouch etc from the Gingerbread keyboard? or maybe use the Gingerbread keyboard but modify it so the interface looks exactly like this one?
I really love the HTC_IME, but I can't make it work with HD2One with "lcd_density=200".
Could you help me ?
I think the keybord doesn't feat the resolution
I have this on my G2 and has there been an update to fix the bug that automatically capatalize the 2nd letter when using the physical keyboard?

The first part, no. As far as making the gingerbread keyboard look like this, it could probably be skinned to look like this and maybe some features added, but if you really want THIS (htc_ime mod) keyboard/feature set with multitouch I highly recommend smart keyboard pro. You can skin it to look just like htc_ime (or anything you want) and it has literally every feature htc_ime mod has and then some.

It's really not possible (or at least very easy) to modify the resolution of these keyboards without source. If there isn't one that works for your resolution then there isn't much anyone can do at this moment, sorry.

I was unaware of this bug, not sure how I'll test it without physical keyboard, but I know Jonasl has left behind some code for debugging physical keyboard problems. I'll look into it tonight.

I'm also very happy with the stock GingerBread keyboard, and ease of language change
it's not as smooth as SWYPE, for fast typing, but i could get used to it
SWYPE is much more natural, but changing language is not so easy as the GB stock keyboard
Im using the Swiftkey one more and more now. Used Swype but it didnt really do it for me. The stock gingerbread keyboard is quite nice but the keys are too tiny ( I dont even have big fingers)
Using Swype here, as I had gotten used to it on the Epic (when I had it), and love it!

just flip the phone horizontally (that's what i do)
yes i find it tiny as well, that is why it's a bit tricky to type fast
but with SWYPE, i don't need to flip the phone, i was able to type real fast even when the phone is in vertical portrait mode
I have to say, the keyboard and typing is one of the few sore spots I have for the Android experience. While the new stock keyboard is much improved over previous iterations, it can still be a bit slow and unresponsive, often missing certain presses; and its auto-correction just isn't as clever as it should be. Another issue I have, particularly with the Nexus S, is that other times, the screen is too sensitive, it seems. Has anyone tried this yet: you can hover your finger slightly off the screen, and it'll register as a press. This might be contributing to hitting wrong keys and spelling errors when my thumbs glaze over the keyboard while typing fast. It's very frustrating. The biggest culprit of this problem seems to occur when I'm trying to type "I'm"... it almost always results in "km" instead. Other examples are when letters get registered twice, like tthis or like thiss. However, it's prone to missing space bar presses, resulting too often in words likethis.
Unfortunately, Google decided to not provide any customizable dictionary or custom auto-correct features. This is baffling to me and where Google's attempt to copy the Apple keyboard goes too far. Speaking of Apple, I say this without any intention of starting immature flame wars, but the iPhone - and even the iPod touch - keyboards are far more smooth, responsive, and reliable. Anyone who has typed extensively on both platforms will know what I mean. I can type with utmost confidence on an iPhone (that's not to say it's perfect). I cannot say I type confidently with my Nexus. And forget about including sound or haptic feedback; these things seem to slow the typing experience down, where it'll miss even more key presses.
Everyone's typing methods and speeds are different, so everyone will have different typing experiences, but for me, it continues to be a sore spot. Which leads me to my next question: when is Blindtype going to be implemented? Anyone heard any new news on it?
Anyway, to answer the OP's question: I am currently trialing Swiftkey. It can be impressive at times, and it's often very intuitive, but I find it's actually slower than typing out on a regular keyboard because I'm too busy making sure it chooses the right words. Then again, it might still be "learning." We'll see when the 31-day trial is over.
Prior to this, I was using Smart Keyboard Pro, which isn't as responsive and quick as stock Android, but it has tons of customizable features which make up for it (for example, I can custom the auto-correction to always change "km" to "I'm"). This is what I'll go back to if I pass on purchasing Swiftkey.
PS. I have Swype as well, and it's fun, but not practical in my opinion.
The best keyboard for me is NO KEYBOARD. For short stuff, like text or emails or a short forum message, you really should give voice input a go for a few days and see how much easier it is than anything else.
Swiftkey my favorite keyboard at the moment, but another fine one and my primary keyboard before I heard of SwiftKey is Better Keyboard (not sure there's a free trial on it), but there's a free public beta going on right now.
So I've been trying some of the many new ROMs we've seen lately. I've read through the bug reports and searched around cannot find anyone else having this issue. I install Swype Beta on every ROM and usually it works fine. However on some of the new ones it randomly won't want to swipe anymore. It starts acting like a normal keyboard. It worked just fine on the CM rom port Alpha 6. But it messes up on the recent Miui and the new Mik Sense v0.4 or something along those lines. Is this swypes fault or the ROM? should I reinstall one or the other?
I've had the same issues with Mik Sense v0.4. It might be a multi-touch thing because I was having similar issues with other apps.
I have the same issue intermittantly on CM9 and JB using FlexT9. The added dimension is that voice to text won't work either when the swype typing is jacked. When the swype typing is OK so is voice to text.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
I vaguely recall having issues with getting the default keyboard to work when removing swype from bulletproof - doubt that info helps, but it did cause a headache on a modified stock gingerbread build.

I think you're dead on with the multi-touch issue. It only happens if I've been pecking the keyboard instead of swiping. For instance, if I type half a text by just pressing letters then try to swipe, it wont work. But then after the screen is inactive awhile it goes back to working. So now I'm guessing it's the rom itself?
On Sense ROMS there is a really cook function called trace. It uses the Stock KB but allows you to swype around to text.
My opinion is Swype sucks, it always has and always will*Please don't flame for my opinions. Anyways trace won't help on AOSP but it will sure fix the Sense issue.
I'm not thinking its due to multitouch at all, we always had issues on the HTC EVO Shift not wanting to swype for us after a few so once we all learned about what HTC provided in the keyboard settings we all loved it.
