Screen capture w/o app? - Captivate General

Today, I was messing around with my phone and accidentally took 2 screen shots of my home screen. That's even without the app. I tried to duplicate what I did but couldn't. I heard that it's something like you hold the back button then the home button...

I also did it once.....
pressed something then "home".....

Are you running Android 2.1 or 2.2? Because in 2.2 you can do it but in 2.1 I only know how to do it using the Android SDK.

Then how ?
in i9000 with Android 2.2, just simply press [back]+[home] to do screenshot.
But in Captivate, Vibrant, there is no hard [back] key...
I think there is some "wrong" so that you can make a screenshot this way.
Since the heat sensitive keys are not multi-touch, you can't press more than one key at a time, but somehow the back key is "hold" then when you press [home], you take a screenshot.

Single press device Lock

Folks, any idea how to switch off the screen / lock the keyboard without the need of double press the red power button?
This is kind of bothering cause when you're in a application and need quickly to put your Treo into your pocket, you need to press 1st to get to the home-screen and 2nd to switch off.
Yeah, seems to be something new with the 750 (no other treo before did this). Palm set this up purposely, so I wouldn't assume there's a workaround for it. You'll get used to double clicking
Not that I know
I have used it for ages and found many shortcuts but no "quick lock".
Sorry
How about getting an application that device locks your phone upon return from standby? I use BatteryStatus Today Plugin by Chi Tai Dang.. This plugin has the option to lock device on wakeup and set cpu speed(I use this a lot)..
But mine's a wizard, what do I know about Treo.. but what I do now is, press the power button to get the phone to go into standby and when I want to use it again, I press the power button and it will device lock upon wake up.
I don't have a Treo. How do you initiate said keyboard lock normally?

"Device lock" that you may know of isn't used on Treo's. Palm uses their own "keyguard," which uses the red END button as a power button when not on the phone. If you are on the today screen, one click will shut the device off. However, if you are in another program, the first tap brings you to the today screen, and the second click turns the screen off (and the keyguard on if you have selected it to be that way). On all other treo's, WM or POS, one click of the end button would shut the screen off (unless you were on the phone obviously, it would be the END function), regardless of what program you were in. Palm changed this, I assume, to be like most cell phones, where when you press the END key it returns to the home screen, regardless of what you were doing. Like a RAZR would do.
Thats the best way I can explain it. You would be surprised Vijay on how many customizations Palm made to the OS.
Yes, I've heard that they did - thank Goodness one of the OEMs finally saw fit to do something original.
Hmm.. from what you describe, clicking twice doesn't seem like a very big chore... I did something similar in VJOkButt. Is it really necessary to convert the 2 clicks to 1 click? Investigating it barely seems worth the effort
V
I agree, hence my original post.
When you are on the today screen, it works normally. And you can double-click quite rapidly and it will work. Not a big deal for me.
yes guys, its not that dramatical, but still, it would be an improvement also considering that I want to stay in that one application (a note which I'm editing) and want to get there after waking up the device again without the need of again starting application, look for the last note, opening etc...
with HTC hermes and others the power button works exactly like this and its even better.
Hi all,
If you're using it two handed hold option (the white key, left hand end of row 3) and press the red button once - closes the app and powers off.
But you need an odd-shaped hand to do that one handed!
It is not that the double click isn't easy to do, it's waht fire00 said; if you are in an app, it closes it and then powers off. Case in point, this weekend while driving to a friend's house, I had directions in my email and would have liked to have turned off the phone, but then I would have to find the email again and open it up. On my Wizard, i would just turn it off and then back on and the email would be there for me.
Gotta be a reg hack for someone to find.

On my device, that method doesn't close the app. It just locks the keyboard and then powers off. When I power on again, the app is still running and on screen. I think that's what fire00 was looking for.

Sorry PJC ACE, my mis-type - using option + red button powers the device off WITHOUT closing the app - just like the power button on the Wizard ;-)
My apologies!

thanks a lot, going to dance with the Treo cause I'm so haaapyyy !! )))

Option (hold)+Red Phone button is a nice alternative, but I'd really like to find a way to prevent the Red Phone from reverting to the Today screen, so I can power off directly with it with one press...Vodafone's excuse for specifically asking for it this way (every other phone's "End" button brings you back to the "home" screen) is ridiculous, these aren't like every other phone.
I installed HTC home plugin and now my red button wont let me go into standby. I uninstalled and still not working. Any ideas?
Side Button + Suspend
There is a thread at TreoCentral that explaines how to activate the side button and make it available for button assignment in the settings screen.
Second there is a small program called suspend.
I have mapped the 1 press of the side button to suspend and away we go.
1 - Click keyguards/screen off.
Also it resume in the place or program you left when you unlock it.

Slide2Unlock Replacement

I am in love with the functionality of Slide2Unlock but it seems to eat memory like crazy and cause weird issues on every ROM I have used (WizardG3).
Does anyone have a locking application that requires pressing the power button to activate the screen and then hold the d-pad for a second to unlock?
I can't always be tapping the screen with my finger or taking the time to get the stylus out.
Hi Xoom, sorry I want to ask you a question instead answering your question.
You asked, "Does anyone have a locking application that requires pressing the power button to activate the screen and then hold the d-pad for a second to unlock?"
Does it mean using Slide2Unlock, I could wake the phone from standby only by tapping the screen, without pressing any button?
Thanks.
Hi
Which version of S2U you are referring to? Version 1 or 2? V.2 now only occupy 1MB of RAM.

Currently with slide2unlock (v2) Using the D-Pad you can unlock the phone or you can use the slider on the touch screen, both to bring the phone into an unlocked state (displaying the today screen)
I notice it runs with 1mb of memory. Maybe it's just a scapegoat along with Voicecommand running at 1mb but something is killing the performance on my phone and having it lock up all the time.
I think I just need a new/custom version of wm6.

No, Sorry for the confusion, I have to push the power button then use the d-pad or touch screen to unlock. If it were possible, I don't think I would like that solution, I figure the phone would be getting "touched" in my pocket all the time.

I was thinking maybe only parts of the screen that is "touchable", so it's not always getting "touched" and would save some batt. And even if it's being "touched", it's still locked and it won't do any unwanted action... at least.
I guess, I'm getting paranoid with the button. But someone's confirming it:
"Naturally I set it to the power button, but after a while, that button got worn down and stopped "working" so I naturally set it to recognize any other button.
This experience has taught me the hard way, that its a good choice to have (or maybe even a necessity in some cases) that other buttons to wake the unit up in case of situations like this."
Taken from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315329
I know we could remap the button, however, it is still pushing the button. Eventually, it could wear the button off.
Su2u has a sweet config app translated to most languages, and has a lots of config options, look into that..

are you running the stock rom or one based on the stock build? i remember it working this way too, but i haven't been running stock for awhile and i just checked that it doesn't work on the new PROven rom... honestly, i would never use it that way anyway, since ive had this phone, ive had to get used to touching everything (compared to my kaiser)... usually you touch a menu item to select it, so touching the start button is part of the process
STOCK ROM
Im running stock rom from alltel
its strange idk why it doesnt work now... hopefully someone will find the fix im not big on the home key but i do use it all the time to launch my start menu then touch from there
Nowadays the only way is to use AEBPlus(Alexander is very popular in these forums with Raphael/Diamond/HD). I have it mapped for long press home key.

Power Key problems

Recently my power button has gone haywire when i press it, it registers as a long press and brings up the power menu. my screen will cut off and come up randomly sometimes it brings up the power menu. im currently running the latest version of MOAR but couldn't find anything to remap/disable the hardware keys. Does anyone know of an rom that will let me remap/disable the hardware keys or an app that would let me do the same. any help is appreciated thanks in advance.

You can always try "button savior" from google play but if you want a rom that has navigation keys then there are tons such as illusions rom and most of those other 4.2.2 roms
Solved my problem partially with button savior but don't is there a way to disable the hardware key?

The power button failure is a known issue with the S3. They usually replace the phone. FYI. It's commonly known as 'sudden death syndrome'

I looked up the SDS and some aspects of this lead me to believe this isint my issue what I'm having my power button ( I'm guessing due to using over time ) has become sensitive is the best way to put it the slightest touch will bring up as I did a long press to bring up the power menu so having it in my pocket will randomly bring it on and bring the power menu up. I'm still trying to figure out how to disable the key its self. If anyone had any input on how to disable it that would be a good temp fix till I can get an replacement
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Well I disabled mine, just pulled the damn thing off and made a shortcut to shut the screen off....works for now until I get it replaced.
To follow up on this, a month and a half later I put my button back in. Guess what, works perfectly.
.....and time to sell lmao

home button not working??

hey guys, i noticed today that sometimes when i press the home button to wake the phone it doesnt react...when i press it again it works normally....this happened to me two times....did anyone see this?
That sounds like a hardware issue. The home button synthesize sensor must not be recognizing the pressure you are applying to the button. Did this happen after a software update?
I'm having the same issue with the home button being super spotty and straight not registering when I push the home button. This is super irritating. I constantly have to press the button and sit like an idiot while it does nothing, then press again.

i tried now to see if this is happening when i am pressing the sides of the home button...and yes...it looks like sometimes i press the sides thats why it doesnt work....but the thing is my home button is a bit loose...so its easy to hit the sides...
I had the S4 and the Note 3. Never had a problem. If I press the button and it clicks it should work.

Hmm that could be a number of things. It could be the hardware. It could be the update that you've installed that is causing wake lock on the device. Since your phone is covered by the one year limited warranty, I think you should contact Samsung and request an exchange/replacement. You can, however, try a factory reset to see if the wake lock problem goes away.
Ok I've been able to replicate the problem 100% if I choose. It is most definitely a hardware problem. If the home button is pressed on the left corner of the button it fully depresses and even clicks. But it doesn't register as so.
Definitely a hardware issue.
My phone had this issue as well where it wouldnt register soft clicks or off center taps and I would regularly get missed presses when using the phone (unless I pressed the button hard). I had verizon send me a replacement. The new phone just showed up, and the home button works almost perfectly. I can still get it to not register if I try really hard to push extremely lightly, on the very edge of the button with my finger nail, but its easily 100x better than the previous one.
The new button is also almost silent while the old one made kind of a cheap plastic click sound like it rattled slightly. It also feels like it requires a tad less force to press than the old button. The old button I could easily recreate the issue 100% of the time by just pressing lightly or pressing off center and it would regularly bother me while using the phone.
Buttons don't work

Here is a "solution" that has worked for me. My S6 is the Verizon variant, but I think these steps will work on any Service Provider.
Settings > Accessibility > Dexterity and interaction > Assistant menu
From here, toggle the switch to "ON". This will create a hovering circle with a window with four panes inside it. If you interactive with the hovering circle it will open a new window in which you have access to the back and recent apps buttons via an onscreen button.
Not sure what has disabled the hardware buttons, but this should give you access via onscreen software.
I know it's not a true fix, but a work around.
If someone finds a true fix, please post it! But in the meantime ...
I hope this helps!
Hello,
I had a S6 and after 4 days I noticed loose home button: it made noise the tap on it (not press). And also didn't registered clicks on the left side.
I exchange it for another and this one is almost perfect. I notice the left side of the butto to be a bit pressed. Anyway, I suspect a harware issue.
Lollipop 5.1.1

My home button stopped working all together right after an update. How can I remove this issue? Every thing else works perfectly. Please help!
I have issues with my home button as well, it's "loose" and rattling. It has always been a bit loose but the last few months it has gotten worse and worse, it started to require more and more pressure to register the press (way beyond the pressure needed for it to *click*). As of now it does not even work at all, no matter how hard I try pressing it.
I've tried the assistant menu that's mentioned here in the thread but I just find the menu annoying. Instead I have learned to live with it for the time being, I just multitask to instagram or facebook and then spam the back button until I'm back at home.
100% hardware issue.
Apparently it's possible to replace the home button, and there are replacement home button to buy from ebay, but the replacement procedure is ridiculuos. The home button is basically the last thing you will demount from the phone when disassembling it.
I found a temporary fix by dabbing the home button with Isopropyl, this made it like new again. But two days later it's back to as it was before, or maybe even worse.
Annoying as hell, especially since this is a result of poor quality control from Samsung.
Update: Found a nice little app on play store called "button remapper" which lets me rebind the default system buttons without requiring root, i have rebinded the "recent apps" button to act as a home button instead, and a long press opens the regular "recent apps". Seems to be an alright workaround.
Just go to samsung shop, let them see,if no exchange or replace or fix, take their demo phones like s8 (2017) throw on to the floor and then take any phone u want, leave the s6 phone alone (make sure it is factory reseted).Ran away and shout #ALLAHUAKBAR!
