I have gotten a response from Storm8 about the account issues regarding their games not working with 2.2
Storm8 Support said:
Hi John,
It's the specific implementation of 2.2 on the phone. Instead of generating a unique ANDROID_ID when the device is first run or factory reset (the intended behavior), it uses a predefined ANDROID_ID for every phone with the same implementation. Addressing this ought to allow for normal gameplay.
Yours,

I read in another post from an Verizon user that the issue was with the leaked version, but the OTA update to 2.2 fixed the issue. Since I am a T-mobile user I don't expect to see the OTA for my Vibrant too soon.
I don't know if this information is helpful to the developers working on 2.2 builds, but I thought I would put it out there. Certainly the change to the ANDROID_ID might affect more than just how Storm8 keeps track of your account.
I had this issue when I switched to the JI6 Leak for my captivate, it fixed my GPS problems but S8 games would not work anymore. I changed my Android ID manually to something completely random and everything works fine once again. there are plenty of guides in the captivate section on doing this.

CHEFS: Disregard what I said below. I'm not convinced this is an issue in the ROMs after all. At least not yet. Mods, feel free to move this to the regular Raph forum or wherever's appropriate. Still investigating ...

Hey Chefs -- Looks like at least some ROMs floating around are missing the latest Daylight Savings information. I discovered it using Proven, but since you guys build on one another's work, I'd be surprised if it's not in some of the other ROMs too.
Fix is here:

WM6.1 roms have this build in. That fix was from wm 5 and 6.
This is the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6 (Pocket PC and Smartphone) update to address DST related issues in 2008 due to revised Daylight Saving Time laws in many countries.

That's what I thought, but the issue I described with my scheduling problem was indeed fixed by installing it.
Maybe something in my setup is an anomoly -- can any one else check on their post-March 8 events and see if they have a similar problem? And then see if this fixes it? It likely only comes up if you create an event in a system that knows the correct DST, then sync it to your phone.
It's possible that my DST information was overwritten somehow by some other software I've installed, but I can't think of what. I'll experiment after a hard reset and see if I get the same problem.

It is possible the fix was accidently removed from you rom. Or an older file was used for compatibility.
Stranger and stranger. The issue came back. Reinstalled the cab, it was fixed. Then it came back again (not sure if a soft reset triggered it, or possibly a sync with nuevasync). So probably not a ROM issue after all. I'd invite any mod to move this thread somewhere more appropriate. Still investigating ...
yupp i just looked at mine and it seems to have the same issue. I'm running RRE V4.4
edited
could have happened through outlook sync
I appear to have solved, or at least worked around, this issue by turnign off the option to change time zones and clocks in settings-personal-phone-time zones.
I imagine this is either: Something screwy with AT&T, or an unanticipated issue with AT&T's US settings and the ROM, since the ROM wasn't built specifically for the US (but certainly works on US devices).
I'd also guess that these events might correct themselves once we're actually in the DST period, but appear wrong until then. Probably because AT&T would compensate for the DST on its official clocks, as not all phones are smart enough to just work with the GMT behind the scenes and adjust appropriately.
However, just like before when I "fixed" it with the cab -- timed events have been corrected to their right times. Existing all-day events remain on the wrong day. New all-day events show up on the correct day.
If you believe something is missing from a rom, please post it in the thread for that rom so the chef would actually see it.
I -think- I finally found more on this:
It seems to come up if the phone is both:
1) Set to get Time Zones and clocks from the carrier
AND 2) If the registry setting to automatically change over for DST is turned off (this can be found in the misc. section of Advanced Config).
At least, this combo seems to cause it on AT&T.
If I'm not mistaken, these are both the default settings in the ROM I've been using.
It would come up if you create a time after the DST switchover (March 8) in something that syncs with the phone (in my case, my google calendar). You'd see the entry on the phone be one hour too early after it syncs.
Just a note: I'm still testing to make sure this is really the issue, but it seems to be bearing out so far.
I am constantly seeing blogs about fragmentation and how it is poisoning the well for developers. I personal think it is a load of crap, but i thought i would ask the developers.
What do you guys think?
Is fragmentation an issue?
YES, it could be an issue if Google did nothing to fix it, but they are:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/29/exclusive-android-froyo-to-take-a-serious-shot-at-stemming-plat/
Not pretending to be an expert, or even a developer, but plenty of apps didn't cross well from various WinMo builds, or devices. WinMo fragmentation hasn't been trending. It's a rhetorical buzzword sustained by iPhanbois, imo.

Yea I saw that too
It's just today we are suppose to be in fragmentation hell... It's just i don't see it.
Once in a while i will tell my friend with a Samsung Moment about an app, and for some reason he does not see it in the market, but this is few and far between.
I chose yes but I doubt it will kill android. It is annoying though to have a phone that is way behind because the maker of the custom UI is too lazy to do anything.
It did not kill the pc, or Windows for that matter. It will probably be gaming benefiting the most of future power increases.
Yeah, iFanboys are the most common people to critizise android for fragmentation - but they are not safe either.
Now with 2g, 3g, 3gs and ipad - and all having diffrent hardware in one way or another - they will also experience fragmentation. Esp. now that OS4 wont be feature-complete on 3g vs 3gs - and ipad wont get it until later.
Just because android got 3 res (320, 480 and 800) doesnt mean that it will be problems since 1.6 came out. Sure they need to fix/force vendors to upgrade handsets to latest android, so that people wont be left out - but since 1.6 that problem is much smaller, and there aint many handsets left out there with builds earlier then 1.6.
It's a problem.
Why do you think there are so many apps that are rated lowly on the market because of incompatibilities.
If there was only 1 phone and 1 version of android to code for, then bugs and compatibility would nearly be a thing of the past.
I think it's an issue, but a minor one. I'd rather them improve the OS rapidly and deal with not being able to use some apps, than sit with a stagnate OS but have more apps.
Like the other poster said though, they are going to try to fix it after 2.2 and work on making apps more compatible with all OS versions.
Hell, at least they realize it's a problem. Microsoft sure didn't give a ****, and doesn't now with 7 series.
Because of the "vendor delay" and the frequent Android releases, Android phones seem to have a 5-month lifecycle (my 1.5 Magic is 6 months old now, and I still can't use Donut/Eclair apps like Goggles, Maps w/ Buzz and many new apps that require 1.6+).
Access to applications is what makes most people buy smartphones. Remove or limit this, and people will switch to other vendors or platforms.
For people that root and switch custom roms, this doesn't seem like a big issue. But the majority of the users won't have access to all the new 1.6/2.1 apps being released on the market.

@Clam*, you're right about them realizing it's a problem and working on it.
I believe they plan to have every phone running the same version of android, but with many add-ons available from the market.
This is surely a desirable route. Might it never happen? I haven't the slightest.
Alternatively a big pack of goodies you can get from online or preferrably the market that has all the addons depending on the sufficiency of phone hardware.
Hell, better yet! It could be part of the "first use tutorial" we all know and love
The first time the user turns on the phone after entering google info etc. they can check all the options they want and it will automatically download them from googles servers and set them up on the phone.
Very reminiscent of certain linux installations with addons from repositories.
OpenSuSE comes to mind.
Or to speed that process up, the phone retailer can install the addons specific for that phone.
Though it would still be nice to have the option to checkmark features at our own whim, allowing the system to discard the rest for example.
Of course if the addons were discarded or never installed by phone retailers in the first place they could still be downloaded from googles servers automatically.
**To Google Gods: It would be nice to have such options in the settings where we could enable and disable features and have them download or be discarded in the background**
There are so many methods out there to make fragmentation nothing more than a bygone.
I hope Google can turn this OS into what I've dreamed (figuratively) that it could be..
Ahh how I concieve ideas that will likely never occur..
Sorry.. i could write volumes about my futile ideas for the world, though I'm too hopeful and eager.
I'm sad to say..

hi, i don't know this is the right forum. i used "read it later" heavily in winmo (thanks to vizier and his latereader) and am now switching to android. it seems that the read it later client paperdroid is no longer supported by the developer in froyo. has anyone able to make it work or do you think some of our talented developers can make it work again?
Will it not install? Will it not launch? Does it run but just not work?
it installs fine but crashes right away after launching.
You should use logcat or any other log capture app to see why it crashes. It would help finding out what's going on and if its possible to fix.
FYI, paperdroid is running fine for me on 2.2 on my evo... Aren't there a few options for read it later on android? I thought I saw a few different apps for it on the read it later site.
Sent from my phone.
thanks for your responses. i will check again if it works or not (I tried several times already but if you got it working there may be hope). i will try logging the error reports also.
as for other ReadItLater clients, Paperdroid seems to be the only Android full RIL client. There seem to plugins for saving links etc.
Also, what phone do you have?
I have a HD2 and run Android off of the SD card. I don't know if that might be the problem.
I tried a different Android built and Paperdroid seems to work. So it's not a Froyo issue after all.
Thanks for all your replies.
Does the T-Mobile G2x come with the Carrier IQ rootkit installed? If so, I'd like to block it. I'm running a rooted Android 2.2.2 (I like the camera) and don't want to do anything that would prevent me from possibly upgrading to ICS should it become available. So where do the stock rom users stand?
-roadtrip72-
I would also like some more information on this. I'm running CM7, but what of the other stockish ROMs? Is this something that is removed by the devs?
Well they did have LogMeIn apps installed in the stock roms, but didn't have actual launcher icons for them... kinda scary.
CM7 based roms won't have anything like this installed as they are built from the ground up. Stock-based roms, which I don't think so, still could. Would be nice to get a real answer.
Ok so I have been researching this for the G2x and not really found much positive test results. I'm currently running 2.3.3 stock everything and I downloaded the apk from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110
From my results the main apk for ciq was not found and nothing ran nor was logged. So I guess no, the g2x stock doesnt have ciq installed. Anyone else confirm this?
Well you can always check and or get rid of the Carrier IQ thing that tracks your information.
You need a rooted phone to do so and then go here to download the app because it is not on the android market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=110
*Note: do a backup of your phone before you do this just incase. I haven't checked if its on our phones just yet but more than likely it probably is
**Update: Having trouble with the app on my g2x with stock rom/faux froyo kernel.05. It keeps giving an "Error copying Busybox" so the App won't update to the pro version that you need. Waiting for Dev response
Does not look to me like CiQ is on the 2.3.4 Rom, but it is possible it may be on the 2.3.3 Rom... Most concerned about LMIRescue.apk and LMIRescueSecurity.apk ... both of those are troubleshooting apps for T-Mobile which in the past has been suggested stands for "LogMeIn"... sounds a lot like ciq or similar. These files were not included in the 2.3.4 Tracfone leak. I have not, however, actually checked a running 2.3.3 with the tools TrevE offered. I did check my copy of the 2.3.4 and it did not find the CiQ service or binary. That is not to say it may not be obfuscated in such a way that TrevE's tool isn't aware of yet though.
However, one thing to note is that a couple of the app usage logs it pulls up I am pretty sure are NOT related to CiQ, and have been around in almost every build of Android since the beginning - specifically the log that tells how much time you've spent in each app. What is IMPORTANT is, is there an app on the phone that's sending the data. That, I can't say for sure.
I saw that article on CNN and was like effing great. After I rooted my phone and saw that logmein crap I froze that right away, lol. Somehow didn't sit with me. Android is great, but let me tell you do NOT trust Google and what they do. I am convinced there's something underlying and sinister about them.
Google=Android
Cell phone=giving up your privacy
I'm going to freeze that lmi crap thing now as well.
I garuantee the g2x has the ciq but its probably hidden or it IS somehow related to logmein. 1984 wasnt a story it was a prophecy. Scary indeed.
And I'm on stock froyo and rooted.
meh...
No CIQ in 2.3.4 but it collects usage stats and periodically sends them to Google. Not sure how to stop that behavior. Also, many of the apps in the Android market use Google's SDK to collect their own usage stats and the apps send them to the devs. They say it is to improve their apps. That is why most apps have permission for network data, even though the app doesn't require network data to work.

Its A work around. But I install Lbe and droidwall or prdroid. With pdroid and Droidwall you can lock down pretty much all services (need root). Lbe is OK but not nearly as good as pdroid. This of course would be ideal for your random Apps that abuse internet use or private data
I tried doing a search and couldn't find a relevant thread, but I have a few questions...
OK first, the issue that brings me here is the only web browser that I like (Boat) has long been dead and out of development, it's long not been on the play store but I've had the APK for a long time and just transfered it to every new phone I got so I could keep using it. I have tried finding a different browser, but I hate them all, none of them have any of the features I want. My last phone was running Android 9.0 and Boat was still working on it. Well, I got a new phone now (Pixel 4a 5g) that has Android 11 and boat still mostly works... except it crashes if I click the bar at the top to type in a URL and a few other bugs... but otherwise still works flawlessly.
1. So, I'm wondering first is it even OK for someone to look to hire a developer to basically update a dead app? Any website and contact information for the original developer no longer exists, but I don't know if it's OK for someone to take over a dead app like that, if it would be considered stealing or something.
2. Second, well if it's OK... I have the last APKs of the browser and I had used a guide to deconstruct the APK into a project thinking maybe I can figure it out and how to update it so that it still works but... yeah that's not happening. So I have the APK files and the already deconstructed into a project and was wondering where I can ask about hiring a developer just to basically update the app so that it still works (bug fixes only, not really making any changes to the look/feel/etc, just fix any bugs or code that's old and deprecated and doesn't work anymore)? And when I say hire, I mean like actually hire, with real money.

First topic is about licence agreement and legal stuff. It is owned by "Boatmob, Inc." / "Digital Life International Limited" / "Crunchbase Inc.". Although the app was for free, it does not seem to be a free licences. But I am not an expert in this area.
About the browser app itself, I have seen that you were already active here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/boat-browser.3821682/
You either need a permission of the owning company and then maintain the app yourself (or via a hired dev), or you have to switch to another and still actively supported browser app.
