[Q] is paperdroid no longer supported. any chance to maintain it? - Android Apps and Games

hi, i don't know this is the right forum. i used "read it later" heavily in winmo (thanks to vizier and his latereader) and am now switching to android. it seems that the read it later client paperdroid is no longer supported by the developer in froyo. has anyone able to make it work or do you think some of our talented developers can make it work again?

Will it not install? Will it not launch? Does it run but just not work?

it installs fine but crashes right away after launching.

You should use logcat or any other log capture app to see why it crashes. It would help finding out what's going on and if its possible to fix.

FYI, paperdroid is running fine for me on 2.2 on my evo... Aren't there a few options for read it later on android? I thought I saw a few different apps for it on the read it later site.
Sent from my phone.

thanks for your responses. i will check again if it works or not (I tried several times already but if you got it working there may be hope). i will try logging the error reports also.
as for other ReadItLater clients, Paperdroid seems to be the only Android full RIL client. There seem to plugins for saving links etc.

Also, what phone do you have?

I have a HD2 and run Android off of the SD card. I don't know if that might be the problem.

I tried a different Android built and Paperdroid seems to work. So it's not a Froyo issue after all.
Thanks for all your replies.

[Q] Update not loading

Guys,
I just became the, now rather dubious, owner of a gTablet that a colleague brought for me from the States. So far I am not that impressed. Several apps that supposed to be on there, aren't (no Kindle app out of the box, and no gMarket, despite what the manual says).
SO, I try the announced update procedure: fails.
First time fails at 8%. Second time fails at 13%, third time fails at 28%, fourth time fails at 4%. Is this a joke of some sort? Also the download is rather slow, as in, they use smoke signals to get the message across!
Does anyone have the update as a file that I can run as an apk perhaps?
I also have to point out that the GUI rather sucks. The settings menu misses about 50% of the Android 2.2 options (I have a HTC desire. Waaaay more settings options...)
After my complaints, lets get to figuring this out.
1) Can someone point me to the update pack if it is available for download via my Mac and can be installed using that ES explorer program it has installed?
2) Does the update provide Google Market or the original weblink? Does it use a different gui or still the same simpleton gui?
3) if not, is there a simple ROM flash I can do that gives me a different GUI and google Market?
I have flashed my HTC Hero before, which was not a big deal. However, I want things done simple, so if there is a good ROM with a nice GUI and simple instructions for a noob (I got two left hands when it comes to this sort of stuff), and Google Market, I would gladly see a link.
Any support will be very welcome!

Forget about the stock update and read about TNT lite or the vegan beta Rom if you feel experimental. You can get market flash and pretty much all the Google goodies.

A good start would be the following guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
Understand that there are newer versions of the rom referenced, also there's VEGAn, a rom based on the Vega.
The Gtab stock needs a lot of help but it is a very good product with a little TLC and some grunt work:
Different devices/users different opinions. I am more than satisfied with the performance and feel of my Gtab without flashing a different ROM and what I did was follow these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
I used root explorer instead of AndRootFile
Then I changed my launcher to ADW.Launcher
Side load flash (Instructions/.apk on XDA-developers)
Do the market fix to get all market (Instructions/.apk on XDA-developers)
add titanium backup
add ROMManager
Note: When I applied the latest update from Viewsonic (fixed the video driver, now AngryBirds, etc working) I had to re-root the device but everything else works fine.
Even fixed the issue with Gtab not seeing Ad-hoc network from phone (Instructions can be found on internet). Now my Gtab rocks, connects to my home Wifi or if not available connects to my Phone Wifi.
I can still launch the default tapNtap if I want to and Viewsonic upgrades apply fine. I had an issue with update also....Support had me set the sleep to "off" and then it worked fine, however the update image was posted on XDA-developer:
Bobtran,
Interesting perspective. Could you run Quadrant and show us what that score is?
I have had TnT up to 2.2 then swithed to VEGAn beta3 now. Q =2411
Most everything runs very very fast...
All, Thanks for the suggestions and the useful links . I might be flashing mine this weekend.
As for which ROM to use, what are the pros and cons for one over another? E.g. if I were to take the TnT ROM (I think it's at 2.4.1 now?), how does that fare against, say, the Vegan Beta4 (I think the latest is beta4 from what I read on some posts)
Bobtran, did you have a link for the update image? seemed like you were going to post it, but got cut short...
Guys,
I am trying to install Clockwork Mod v08 as per one of the links. First issue is that the tablet won't mount the SDcard to my desktop. SHouldn't be a big issue as I can coy/paste the required files from the internal storage to the SDcard via ESexplorer (standard installed on the gTablet).
However, how do I know it installed correctly? I don't see a new app and the boot install goes very fast. There is an opened box with an arrow pointing down and a load bar that seems to have green hashed filling, as if it's preparing to install. Then suddenly the splash screen pops up. The box with arrow and progress bar are there for a second or so, maybe 2. Seems rather quick. Is this correct?
EDIT: I wanted to say the boot screen didn't come up when starting up with vol+ and pwr, but just noticed, it does... so should be ok
well, seems I have been successful in flashing the new ROM (TnT 2.4.0) using CWM-v08.
Question though, the instructions in the TnT installation guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245) seem to say that the market fix only is a partial fix (note that the comment applies to TnT2.2).
Now that I installed the TnT2.4.0 ROM, I was wondering if the market fix is also only partial for TnT2.4. If yes, can I run the patch at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
and if yes, would that give me full Market access? If not, what's involved in getting full Market access?
As a side question that may not belong here but wouldn't be answered in the appropriate forum section: I have an XT701 phone that needs a Market Fix. Would the fix at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
also provide my phone with the Market? Just a side question, if no answer, that's fine...

Unfortunately I flashed to TnT lite yesterday so can't do that anymore without starting from scratch. Just testing the waters so to speak.

For the market fix, just see the link that I have in my first post, in the TnT Lite thread. That fix could also work on other devices. It's the same fix in the link you just posted.

Ahhh another market porblem question.

Not sure whats going on but for the past day and a half now I have not been able to install apps from the droid market from the PC. Been doing market fixes since then. I have all apps showing up, but I still get the device not showing in my account.
I know this issue pops up alot just wanted to know if others where having the same issue.
I did eventually install appbrain as a work around but it is really annoying to see that google is having that many problems with this.
I went through all the net advised fixes, work around's and everything else. From what I've come across it's not just tablet owners having this issue. It's also phone owners of both rooted and non-rooted phones.
will be easier for others to help you if you give more info. What rom are you using? What have you tried? (you say you tried a few fixes) any hacks or tweeks youve done?
I am running TnT lite 4.2.4 w/ clockwork mod installed. No other tweaks to speak of. I have not had a market issue since original install 3 weeks ago. Even after running the 2.2.4 supplement I still had a functioning market.
It was the next day that market did an update and things went downhill from there. I hit the net and looked for other fixes and found 2 others involving removal and resetting of gmail account. did not work work.
As of 7:30am today my market account still does not show my device listed. The first run of the market fix 3 weeks took 4 hrs for my tab to show under market account, so letting it sit after ordering from the tablet did not correct the issue either.
I have tried the titanium backup market fix as well as the non titanium fix on multiple occasions. at least 4x each fix. My market on tab looks up to date w/ all apps, just my tab is not showing on the webpage market.
THis issue does not seem to be just a tab issue as googleing "device does not show under market account" pulls quite a few issues regarding this problem. Even various phones are having the same issue.
not sure what else to do except use a work around.
Similar issue...
ROM: Vegan Beta 5.1.1
Tab: Ztab
My issue is that all my android devices, including this one, show up. However, two of them show as "not compatible" for many applications even though they should be compatible. For instance, Xscope (being the latest I tried) won't install on either the Ztab or my nameless Shanzai tablet. It would install on my S7 or Droid.
Android Versions:
S7: 2.1
Droid: 2.2 (some ROM, don't remember which)
Shanzai: 2.1 (as it came)
Ztab: 2.2 (via Vegan as noted above)
I'm not sure what else to try and it is getting very annoying. I had thought it was just me until I started to see more and more reports of the issue.

Text-To-Speech

Apparently this feature is acting up on other devices but was wondering if anyone had this working on their G2x and if so how did you manage to get it working?

What sort of issues are you having, and what ROM are you using? I had some issues with bluetooth and tts with CM7. I've switched over to EB 2.3.3, and all is working well.
Make sure you have everything you need installed.
Go to settings/voice input & output/text-to-speech settings/
If "Install voice data" isn't grayed out, click on that...it will take you to the market to download the voice engine.
I haven't noticed any problems with my tts, running my current ROM, but I also don't use Pico. I use Svox. It cost around $2-3 for the voice download, but it's much nicer than Pico.
Good Luck.
I'm running stock GB 2.3.3
I was hoping it would read text as they came in similar to the new WP7 Mango update but apparently the framework doesn't support that yet.
It takes me to the market, i download the application but then it uninstalls itself and shows that i have never downloaded the application before. I might install Faux123 rom and see if i can get it to work.

What app are you trying to d/l? I've never really tested out text message readers. I know Handcent will read the text, but IDK if you can set it to read as they come in.
I did test out Vlingo way back, and I must say...it was pretty good. I just don't like that it requires data usage (I'm on a limited data plan). But, for reading texts, Vlingo was pretty awesome. It even understood things like LOL (rather than say L-O-L, it would read it as "laughing out loud"). It even translated WTF, which of course made me laugh like a 12yr old kid.
I'm not downloading any. I was hoping the stock messaging application would do this as i kind of like the layout but sucks as far as security is concerned but that is an android thing.
I'll give the Vlingo a try and see if it works.
Thanks for the help.

[Q] DivX web player support

Hi,
I'm looking for a way to play divx files in-browser, i.e. to stream video files from the internet and not to play downloaded .mp4s. I've tried several apps that are supposed to do that, such as moboplayer, MXPlayer etc., and none of them worked. Am I doing something wrong, or is it impossible to use this plugin in any way on android any more?
Device: US MZ604 on stock 4.1.2. I've tried the stock browser and chrome* so far
*which apparently now doesn't support any plugins anyway...
Welp, no replies eh well..
I may have solved this issue by downloading a newer version of Flash anyway. I say may have because while the plugin now works, it seems to be very slow to load anything. Frankly, I'm out of the time (and the data allowance) to test it thoroughly, but give me a few days and I may be able to call this solved. Later then...
OK, the plugin has been tested repeatedly now and, I am pleased to say, works! So the message is: if your version of flash isn't working, delete amd sideload another one. I presume everyone knows where to go for those ersatz updates by now, but if not the answer is of course a website like http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/apk or right here on this forum
So, we can call this thread SOLVED.

Trying to unlock the bootloader, please help ??

Hi Folks.
Just picked up a very nice old EVO Shift and would like to root it.
Certain problems have arisen immediately and I hope someone can direct me in how to solve them, please.
To start with - right this minute all I have is an old XP PC, so the tools for newer OSes will not work for me right now.
I have searched here and in general extensively and found many possible answers - but cannot get anything to succeed yet.
The HTC Dev site allowed me to join, but instead of getting to the bootloader unlocking area it just demands that I log in over and over - so I cannot do it that way.
(I tried maybe 5 different browsers, clearing cookies, cache & all that - same results.)
Kingo has a specific tool for this - but apparently it just uses the HTC Dev site in the background and it fails as well.
The htcsupertoolv3 opens - but it also depends upon that site and also fails.
Many sites recommend downgrading the phone from 2.3.4 to 2.2 - but their files were uploaded aeons ago and I have not been able to find a complete solution anyplace.
The phone connects fine to my PC, I have the drivers & ADB & I've been working at this most of the day today without success.
Right now seems like a good time to give myself and the phone a rest and to resume tomorrow when I get some time...
Any help will be hugely appreciated.
Thanks

Is there no hope for this very nice older phone ??
As of now I have managed to find all but the ShiftRR tool and hope someone here still has that & will help me.
Thanks.
