Does the T-Mobile G2x come with the Carrier IQ rootkit installed? If so, I'd like to block it. I'm running a rooted Android 2.2.2 (I like the camera) and don't want to do anything that would prevent me from possibly upgrading to ICS should it become available. So where do the stock rom users stand?
-roadtrip72-
I would also like some more information on this. I'm running CM7, but what of the other stockish ROMs? Is this something that is removed by the devs?
Well they did have LogMeIn apps installed in the stock roms, but didn't have actual launcher icons for them... kinda scary.
CM7 based roms won't have anything like this installed as they are built from the ground up. Stock-based roms, which I don't think so, still could. Would be nice to get a real answer.
Ok so I have been researching this for the G2x and not really found much positive test results. I'm currently running 2.3.3 stock everything and I downloaded the apk from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110
From my results the main apk for ciq was not found and nothing ran nor was logged. So I guess no, the g2x stock doesnt have ciq installed. Anyone else confirm this?
Well you can always check and or get rid of the Carrier IQ thing that tracks your information.
You need a rooted phone to do so and then go here to download the app because it is not on the android market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=110
*Note: do a backup of your phone before you do this just incase. I haven't checked if its on our phones just yet but more than likely it probably is
**Update: Having trouble with the app on my g2x with stock rom/faux froyo kernel.05. It keeps giving an "Error copying Busybox" so the App won't update to the pro version that you need. Waiting for Dev response
Does not look to me like CiQ is on the 2.3.4 Rom, but it is possible it may be on the 2.3.3 Rom... Most concerned about LMIRescue.apk and LMIRescueSecurity.apk ... both of those are troubleshooting apps for T-Mobile which in the past has been suggested stands for "LogMeIn"... sounds a lot like ciq or similar. These files were not included in the 2.3.4 Tracfone leak. I have not, however, actually checked a running 2.3.3 with the tools TrevE offered. I did check my copy of the 2.3.4 and it did not find the CiQ service or binary. That is not to say it may not be obfuscated in such a way that TrevE's tool isn't aware of yet though.
However, one thing to note is that a couple of the app usage logs it pulls up I am pretty sure are NOT related to CiQ, and have been around in almost every build of Android since the beginning - specifically the log that tells how much time you've spent in each app. What is IMPORTANT is, is there an app on the phone that's sending the data. That, I can't say for sure.
I saw that article on CNN and was like effing great. After I rooted my phone and saw that logmein crap I froze that right away, lol. Somehow didn't sit with me. Android is great, but let me tell you do NOT trust Google and what they do. I am convinced there's something underlying and sinister about them.
Google=Android
Cell phone=giving up your privacy
I'm going to freeze that lmi crap thing now as well.
I garuantee the g2x has the ciq but its probably hidden or it IS somehow related to logmein. 1984 wasnt a story it was a prophecy. Scary indeed.
And I'm on stock froyo and rooted.
meh...
No CIQ in 2.3.4 but it collects usage stats and periodically sends them to Google. Not sure how to stop that behavior. Also, many of the apps in the Android market use Google's SDK to collect their own usage stats and the apps send them to the devs. They say it is to improve their apps. That is why most apps have permission for network data, even though the app doesn't require network data to work.

Isn't there an opt out for Google analytics during the setup wizard that everyone skips when you first set up the phone after a wipe?

just
Its A work around. But I install Lbe and droidwall or prdroid. With pdroid and Droidwall you can lock down pretty much all services (need root). Lbe is OK but not nearly as good as pdroid. This of course would be ideal for your random Apps that abuse internet use or private data

Can you delete the stock browser after root and not have any problems
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
It should be perfectly safe to remove the stock browser. Unlike IE on Windows for example, nothing in Android actually relies on the native browser code. All applications wishing to transfer to your browser go where you tell them to.
I imagine you may have some funky issues later down the line.
The truth is

Well I don't wanna be mean, but I am gonna say this is false. I have had G1, N1, and now G2x i have removed alot of things from my phones and even my latest the G2x. And even though you shouldn't have any problems with removing system apps remember now that your root you should make sure to back-up your phone, because you could mess with some setting or god knows what and be stuck in a bootloop. Also, instead of actually uninstalling apps you could always freeze them to make receiving ota updates easier(Cause gingerbread is right around the corner)
P.S. didn't realize you have a G2x too! beware of removing the my t-mobile and my device apps because they might throw you into this weird force close free for all.
Okay, so here is a small application I designed out of fun. Just install it on your desktop and run it, and it will give you the option to remove some bloatware from your phone. This is not 100% full proof. There are bound to be some errors with version numbers and all. Also, this will only work with the new gingerbread 4.22 base, because of the change in names of the stock apps.
Remember, your phone will need to be rooted, and connected via adb for this to work.
This is the first time I'm developing something so don't attack me if it doesn't work lol.
As with anything, I'm not responsible to anything that happens to your phone. ( Though the worst that probably can happen is that the application doesn't get removed.
Attached is the application in a zip folder.
Windows Only
sorry Linux users, maybe next time.
If you have any problems installing, go and download Microsoft Netframework.

Cool ill try this out and report back. Nice work
Okay cool, thanks
hopefully it's at least %100 fool proof.
Can you define what you call "bloatware" as well? I consider all Sense ROMs to be bloatware, will this app remove it and flash an AOSP ROM? -- point being is everyone defines bloatware differently. Maybe in future versions you can have checkboxes on what the app removes allowing the user to have choice.
Thanks.
Lol, yeah hopefully.
I was defining bloatware as applications that are loaded onto the phone by the carrier. So basically, almost anything Sprint related.
maybe give the users options on what they want to remove?
yeah I have included a few apps for the user's choice to remove, but I understand what you're saying. I'll definitely expand on that.
Good luck with this. I'm sure there is a need for this software, so I hope you keep it up and mature it into something useful to the XDA hordes.
Apparently this feature is acting up on other devices but was wondering if anyone had this working on their G2x and if so how did you manage to get it working?

What sort of issues are you having, and what ROM are you using? I had some issues with bluetooth and tts with CM7. I've switched over to EB 2.3.3, and all is working well.
Make sure you have everything you need installed.
Go to settings/voice input & output/text-to-speech settings/
If "Install voice data" isn't grayed out, click on that...it will take you to the market to download the voice engine.
I haven't noticed any problems with my tts, running my current ROM, but I also don't use Pico. I use Svox. It cost around $2-3 for the voice download, but it's much nicer than Pico.
Good Luck.
I'm running stock GB 2.3.3
I was hoping it would read text as they came in similar to the new WP7 Mango update but apparently the framework doesn't support that yet.
It takes me to the market, i download the application but then it uninstalls itself and shows that i have never downloaded the application before. I might install Faux123 rom and see if i can get it to work.

What app are you trying to d/l? I've never really tested out text message readers. I know Handcent will read the text, but IDK if you can set it to read as they come in.
I did test out Vlingo way back, and I must say...it was pretty good. I just don't like that it requires data usage (I'm on a limited data plan). But, for reading texts, Vlingo was pretty awesome. It even understood things like LOL (rather than say L-O-L, it would read it as "laughing out loud"). It even translated WTF, which of course made me laugh like a 12yr old kid.
I'm not downloading any. I was hoping the stock messaging application would do this as i kind of like the layout but sucks as far as security is concerned but that is an android thing.
I'll give the Vlingo a try and see if it works.
Thanks for the help.
I was just wondering, why if you delete certain stock apps (Or Bloatware for that matter), they cause FCs or instability in general? Are they tied into the OS somehow?
If somebody can explain this, (In layman
s terms, I'm still learning things about Android) I'd be very thankful.
Bloatware can be removed when you root your device through the explorer. But you can download custom roms with an unlocked bootloader which usually have no bloatware those are two ways of getting rid of the carrier crap. Your choice.
It's also dependent on your device & what type of rom you're running. There should be a list of safe to remove apps for your device/rom.
If you're iffy of something, try freezing it first with Titanium Backup. If all goes well then you can uninstall it.

Thanks for your quick reply, but what I meant was why is it that if you delete a stock apps (Like DriveSmart from Samsung)

it messes with the system.
EDIT: Figured it was worth mentioning that I don't own an Android device yet (But it'll either be the Epic 4G or the Sidekick 4G [I lurk in the latter's forum]), so I'm trying soak up as much info as I can receive.
So when I get either device [Even though hands on experience always trumps reading things off forums] I won't waste time figuring things out.
EDIT #2: And thanks plainjane, missed your post somehow.
For several months, my hotspot hacked worked just fine on T-Mobile, but now it's not working. Usually it was built into the ROMs and there wasn't any issues. Wondering if anyone has a fix. I'm currently running the newest version of CAF Blisspop, stock kernel.
So what model/brand phone do you have? What version of Android are you on? If you can provide that info, you should get some guidance here in the forum or by private message. I'm sure you've searched the forums too. Think of some keywords devs use to describe that specific ROM feature and then search again. Seems to me this info isn't readily available for obvious reasons. But you can find it if you're persistent.
FWIW, I dont believe T-Mobile is changing the way they look for tethering violations, they're still using user agents and overall data usage as far as I know. I've tried various modded apps and various native HotSpot mods, and the only common theme T-Mobile has cited to me is the user agent. I've been warned three times, and thabkfully they still haven't taken away my unlimited data. I personally don't bother anymore, I have unlimited data and just download anything I need to my phone and copy and paste it over to my computer while connected. Unless there is some brilliant tethering mod out there that's undetectable, sooner or later they'll figure you out. I think once you hit 30 GB of data in a month, they watch your account. That's a ton of data to use on a phone alone in a month unless you stream movies/videos constantly. Wish it weren't this way, but you've got to play their game to stay in the game. Just my two cents.
