This thread is based on Firerat's work, just modded a little to be more specific for the EVO, so be sure to thank him for his work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
I modded the script so a default of 250MB for system & 125MB for cache(leaves ~570MB for data) is included, so the mtdpartmap.txt in the SD card is not required unless you want to change those. If a mtdpartmap.txt is detected in the SD card during flash, it will overwrite those defaults values with whatever is in the mtdpartmap.txt.
For those that want to change the default values, just mod the attached mtdpartmap.txt
S-OFF is required
This is not for the faint of heart and requires how to flash using fastboot if you want to revert back to stock partition sizes, so if your not comfortable with ANY of the install & uninstall steps below, DO NOT FLASH THIS!!!
Be sure to check how much space your current ROM uses in the system & cache partitions before flashing this, so that way you don't cause problems with this MOD
Most de-odex'd ROMs should be fine with a 250MB system partition but those that are using a Desire HD/Z based ROM might need 300MB or slightly more, so be sure to double check your current system/cache usage before flashing
Also, too small of a cache partition will cause errors with some games & downloading of OTA updates as it uses the cache partition as the download folder
Install
1. Copy FR_Boot_CustomMTD_v1.5.7b_for_EVO, FR_Recovery_CustomMTD_v1.5.7b_for_EVO, FORMAT_ALL zips(& custom mtdpartmap.txt if you want to change the default sizes) to your SD card
2. Reboot into recovery
3. Make a Nandroid backup if you didn't already
4. Format cache, data & system partitions using my FORMAT_ALL.zip for ease
6. Flash FR_Recovery_CustomMTD_v1.5.7b_for_EVO.zip(this patches the recovery to use the custom partition sizes)
7. Reboot into recovery again
8. Restore Nandroid backup or flash new ROM but don't reboot
9. Flash FR_Boot_CustomMTD_v1.5.7b_for_EVO.zip(this patches the kernel to load the custom partition sizes)
10. Reboot
NOTE
Everytime you flash a new ROM or kernel, you must flash the FR_Boot_CustomMTD_v1.5.7b_for_EVO.zip afterwards, so the kernel gets modded to load the custom partition sizes
Uninstall
1. Make a Nandroid backup if you didn't already
2. Boot into Bootloader and select Fastboot USB
3. Reflash custom recovery console using Fastboot
Code:
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
4. Reboot into recovery
5. Format cache, data & system partitions using my FORMAT_ALL.zip for ease
6. Restore Nandroid backup or flash new ROM, if the restore contains a kernel that has modded partition sizes, then reflash the kernel
7. Reboot

so besides the increase in available data space, is there any performance advantages?
No real advantages besides that you regain all the lost space from the cache & system partitions

Do we have to do this all the time before a new rom or is it gonna b in there all the time?

If your low on memory, then I can see some performance increases but I guess I'll have to do a before and after benchmark to see for sure.

Amazing work Calkulin! I am going to test this on mIuI.
Thank you Calk. I was just looking into this thread over on the G1 forums. This is going to come in very handy.
What recovery is the custom recovery based on?
EDIT
NM: Reading comprehension problems. Now I see that it patches the recovery. My other question is do you guys think resizing and creating a swap partition would be beneficial? I already have a lot of free space on /data after moving dalvik-cache to /cache.
Thanks Calk.
Just flashed this, nand restored, and I have 100+ mb available.
Edit: I have about 100mb MORE available than before making this mod on the same ROM/kernel combination.
seems very ricky lol sorry but i have bricked 2 evos lol from not listening to what a guide says and trying my way lol
it would be really cool if someone made a tut and put it on utube or something there needs to be more vids on there of evo any way and no junkphone i mean iphone lol

*please hold off use of safe strap until further notice. I promise you we are hard at work on it************************************************************There is a new version at the bottom of the post. Please uninstall recovery from with in your currently installed v.1 then uninstall safestrap app. Download and install v.2 and install recovery. If you already have a safe system installed you will need to reflash the zip and wipe data/factory reset. Thanks Jim for the fix! There are now 2 different versions 1 for those not running jims webtop hack and one for those of you that are. Please download the safestrap appropriate for your setup at the bottom of the page. ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
What works?
-Everything except mounting usb in recovery.
-Cant seem to format safe system /data
Here it is!!! Our very own Unofficial safestrap recovery!
Whats this mean? Custom rom's!!! CM7 CM9 etc! And no more fxz or cwm on every boot just to save from a softbrick.
How'd we do it?
This was a pain in the A**, Jimbridgeman and myself have worked our butts off on this. We changed the recovery.fstab around so that we are able to use the sd card as a mount point to install the /system partition as well as a separate partition for /data. So in laymen's terms, were booting from the sd.
How to Install -(From Windows)
(Partition sizes are up to you but ext3 partition should be no less then 350mb and the second fat partition should be not less then 500mb)
1.Backup your sdcard
2.Format your sdcard from your phone under settings-storage
3.Put your sdcard into some kind of card reader and place into computer
4.Download, install, and open Mini Tool http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
5. Right click on your sd card, click resize

6. Re size so that you have at least 850mb left "Unallocated"
7.Click OK
8.Click apply changes
9.Right click on unallocated partition and select create
10. Click Yes
11.I went with 1gb, this is the data partition, It needs to be at least 500mb and your settings must match mine. Primary,Fat32
12.Click apply changes
13.Right click on unallocated space, select create
14.Click Yes
15. This is the System partition and needs to be at least 350mb, Your settings must match mine. Ext3,Primay
16.Click on apply changes.
17.Click Yes.
18.You are all done! Should look something like this.
Now to install the safestrap

Special thanks to jimbridgeman and hashcode. (JIM... I LOVE YOU!!!)

The safe system is stored to the sd card, no real performance issues.. 5500ish in antutu running cm7 for the droid 3!

I'm assuming that like with the razr if you are using the bootstrap with on boot you have to remove it before installing the safe strap version?
Thank you
I knew it was only a matter of time!!!!!!
Thank you guys
A link worth sharing http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com/p/how-to-safestrap.html , this is the original safestrap for D3 and RAZR done by hashcode , take a look at his blog to understand more about safestrap if you are a noob like me.
but there is only one question i need to understand using this hack can we install roms on the 1st system ( device memory ) or just on the 2nd system ( SD Card ) ?
This is what I have been using instead of the bootstrap, to use my custom ROMS... it will allow you to use your paid version of CWM the way it should be used. You can now go into CWM and select boot to CWM or flash from sdcard while still in android, and it will boot you into CWM and start flashing....
Thanks for all your hard work!

So essentially, this is a dual boot system of sorts? This allows me to install a custom ROM and run it in Safe mode then go back to my factory ROM by turning off Safe mode?

What is needed if you want this on your device:
- phone need to be s-off + rooted
- you need recovery to install this
- you need to create 2 partitions on your sd card using an tool like "MiniTool Partition Wizard" (first partition need to be primary fat32 and seccond need to be primary ext4 (becouse I enabled apps2sd))! Do not create extended partition, all must be primary or instalation will be unsucesfull!!!
- install recovery and wipe everything using recovery (boot, sd-ext, cache, data, system)
- delete all android folders from your sd card and copy zip to sd card
- than install rom zip using recovery
After installing and runing your new rom:
- go to settings/aplication/all/google service framework and force stop + clear data!
- go to settings/aplication/all/settings and clear data!
- reboot!
What working:
- apps2sd enabled, cpu owerclock is default set to interactive|245min|806max
- video working, camera, camcorder, wifi, gps, bluetooth, data...
What not working:
- I don't know, please let me know
Kernel chagelog:
EDIT 20.Feb.2012:
- added nand partition (full nand size part) so you can dump whole nand
- enabled swap
- fixed lightsensor levels
- owerclocked video hw for better response
- some kernel fixes
- added cpu governors (SCARY, SAVAGEDZEN, SMARTASS and SMARTASS2)
EDIT 02.Mar.2012:
- reenabled interactive governor
- some changes in power management (now smallest battery drain!)
- 13 cpu frequencies (including 19mhz)
EDIT 09.Mar.2012:
- zram module added (will create init script in next update)
- genirq: pm: Fix the enable ordering in resume
How to install? Simple go to recovery, erase boot, flash boot_update.zip from attachment. Kernel is compatible with cm7! Please let me know how it working in your device!
Enjoy with CM7 + GoLauncher
Ahh some competition ehh? ;D

Sweet. I like options specially being that ive never tried go launcher. I'll have to try this out...a crazy thought......I wish somebody would whip up some kernel action. Just a thought for you devs out there.
Kernel is updated, see first post!
Anyone tried updated kernel?
I did. Installed over CM7.2 KANG 2012-02-20 build. I wanted to try Smartass and Smartass2 governors. No improved battery life noticed, but i'm too lazy to uninstall it and as no bugs discovered so far i currently live with this kernel

initial repo from here -> https://github.com/CyanogenMod/htc-kernel-msm7227 and patch in attachment + files... maybe this changes will work better in your kernel? What battery current value is in sleep mode in your kernel?
Thxs....just to clarify, there is no clear boot option in CW. Sorry that im a knuckle head & not getting this. Just excited 2 try new kernel, munjeni. ok, but its boot update for cm 7.2! If you want, maybe try to replace init.d folder from my aria cm build and try if it will boot? In any way I have plan to create new custom build with go launcher + latest cm7. Whats new in cm7 rc2 ?
Rc2 nightly? not much but I do wanna say that I'm loving your kernel. Running 128/806 MHz on smartassV2. I finally got rid off setcpu and finally have a phone that goes to sleep in screen off. Also no lag after an hour say when the phone rings from screen off. Currently on rc2 newest nightly.
Thanks dude, from your "plot" I see there is unused frequencies, for example 128mhz (i think some frequencies not exist!), 19mhz and 864 working but device sometimes rebooting phone so I will play with 19 and 864 (will try to see what frequency cause device reboot)....etc, but "sleep mode" is 70% good now (in a morning when I wakeup my device I seen 4mA battery current value so its good thing, device going to deep sleep mode!) but other 30% (for example when device go to sleep for 5 minutes, when I wake up device, current value is 50mA so it mean is not in deep sleep becouse some of "components" is not in sleep mode...etc... will try to fix that 30% things about...
In any way its better than before, battery drain in sleep mode after "night to morning" is about 5% of the capacity, so its very good
I have to say....i've totally ditched launcher pro for go launcher. after you set up go launcher.....yeah it takes a bit but its just like launcher pro but much more options. so its worth it. also, no more crappy reboots and have to force close LP. go launcher has some nifty widgets too with SUPPORT. i think the launcher pro dude took a long deep vacation. Gonna flash this ROM on my wifes being that i got her a new aria. . im a cheaP a$$. keep you guys posted.
Kernel updated, changelog is in first page
zram -doesnt- need to be build as a module, built in works fine for our device
and you shouldnt need a script for it there already is one, 'compcache' in /bin and cmsettings.
the only thing i see for a change there would be the swappiness, defaults to 30, which from what ive always seen was it was being unused
The only issue i am having is play market wont download or update apps. My mom and wife both on same wifi have no problems. Im not sure if its this rom or what. Other data works fine.

Oh yeah sorry, completely forgot about that lol. Its a CWM flashable zip, i recommend you wipe everything (factory reset in cwm, wipe dalvik cache) but if coming from supercharged v5 , or stock 2.3.6 you may not need to, just wipe cache and dalvik cache and flash zip
good work +rep testing for bugs..

Yes, Supercharge was a CWM backup with data wiped, this is a CWM .zip that you flash in CWM, not extract and restore it.

Yes, it will, just make a backup, then restore and you will be exactly like you were when you made the backup. I recommend Using the CWM on boot .zip after flashing a rom, so you will get CWM every boot, because you cant access bootstrap CWM with a button combo like on most phones. So if something messes up, you will have to restore to stock with fastboot. You get what im saying?
wait so does it work ? can we flash it ? is it safe ?

ill have an update out tomorrow id say
hello guys hope you all are fine.
I am on stock ROM but my phone is rooted and I have made a ext partition of my memory card and using it with link2sd and I am going to install cm9 build 14 on my phone. You will need this information to answer my questions.
I have some questions in my mind so please help me.
1.in cm9 thread there's written that "Make sure you're running a proper working ClockworkMod-Recovery".I thinks so I am using yannou90 recovery so will I able to flash this rom or first I have to install this recovery from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168725 ?
2.i am little bit confused between these 4 memory scripts (D2EXT+,INTEXT+,Mounts2sd,ungaze) or you can suggest me any better memory script and please include the link of the script.
please answer my questions I am a complete noob.
This is my first post so If i have posted in wrong section please move it to right section
Thanks in advance.
You've nailed the section, congrats
Now jokes asaid, your recovery is perfectly fine to flash whichever rom you wan't, the warnning is there for another reason, way back (1.5 years or something) there was some not succesfull attemppts with cwm(original one, not the one that you have)...... so don't worry, just follow instructions.
Now about your second question, I personnaly prefer mounts2sd becouse it has more options, the other scripts that you mentioned don't have this much options, but on the other hand, they are simpler to use and won't give you headakes if you play with them(mostly becouse you just can't). Also in my signature is really good explenation about memory scripts, check it out if you have some time
three more question.I saw a video on YouTube of installing cm9 in pico.He also wiped his cache partition so is it compulsory to do this? and the second is will i lose all my apps and ext partition after installing cm9 and the third question i have 1.5 gb of ext partition how can I extend it to 2gb.

Hey, Let me try to answer your queries.
1. Its better to wipe your cache partition. I dont know if its "necessary" or not but i always prefer to wipe it and have a clean flash of rom.
2. Start using Titanium Backup app. It will backup your apps+data to a particular folder in memory card. copy that folder in PC, after u r done with flashing just install titanium backup again and put the copied folder back in memory card. You wont lose your apps.
3. to expand 1.5 gb, use "ease us partition manager". its very user friendly. simply remove 500 mb from ur fat32 card and merge it with 1.5gb partition with correct extension.

I have already made the backup of my apps don't need their data.as i already mention that i am using link2sd on my stock rom so I also want to clean my ext partition how will I do this? should I also wipe dalvik cache? I have also made a nandroid backup of my pico.
I have to DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET before flashing cm9 or after flashing cm9
Check out this video.. click here
and in the instruction there's said " DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET (otherwise your device will be stuck at boot)" I have to do this after flashing rom and gapps right?
No u have to do it before
BEFORE flashing roms you should wipe EVERYTHING! After that, it's just not needed.
All set I have flashed cm9 build 14 in my pico thanks all for guiding me,Now I want to use mounts2sd script and there's written no app should be installed before flashing mount2sd,I was setting up my WiFi.My phone automatically updated the google play store to 4.x.x and also installed google play store services so what should I do now first uninstall the update and google play store services and then flash the mounts2sd or just flash mounts2sd without uninstalling anything?
Small suggestion
why don't you try DroidSail Super App2SD Lite to move apps from Phone to SD it Pops a Notification whenever a new App is Installed here the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DMsImNvbS5kcm9pZHNhaWwuZHNhcHAyc2QiXQ..:good:

Flash it without uninstalling anything. But I'd recommend the play store version of mounts2sd which has a GUI

I can't view the image but the play store version is the same app and can be updated like any other app. Flashable version must be configured from terminal as it doesn't include a GUI
It should, if it doesn't you can always flash the other version, personally I haven't tryed it with cm 9(playstore mounts2sd I mean), but there should be no issues. Just if you have 'android is upgrading' after every boot (not the first) you can try setting, 'sd-ext type' to 'automatic' also you can dissable 'safemode' drom playstore app, but do that only if you have issues, if not this things are useles s
@ Sachin damn you're fast

Hey!
Normal I'm just reading here and don't contribute something, but since I've got that old fully bloated Tablet I'm trying to port something on my own. First because I broke the Tab, now because I have time for some experiment and the tablet was just a gift so never mind if it's broken or not. Hopefully it stays alive.
Till now there is no shiny Custom ROM, but I'm trying to Port! What you found here is a debloated Original System, that's nearly looking Stock Android, a new Splash.img without the Medion branding, and also an Updated TWRP 3.6 that runs annoying slow.
The Files are present as they are, I don't know when I Update things or debug something. It runs on my Tab, maybe it doesn't run on your Tab. Be sure to back up your System with the given TWRP. External SD-Card work even with 128 GB for me. So enough Space to save all partitions. The TWRP doesn't work well with secured data partition, so you have to back up every Partition one by one. The Boot.img is patched with Magisk 24.3

U need to install Gapps because I delete all Google Services.
Also, the Obsolete Keyboard and the Launcher is gone from System.img! So if u flash it and can't do anything, u have been WARNED!
Unlocking Bootloader is necessary to Flash boot.img, TWRP.img and so on! Use the Search if u don't know how.
The Image is in Sparse format to used with fastboot, if u don't know how … you know, the Search thing.
just to
Spoiler
Flash things
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash splash splash.img
fastboot flash recovery twrp3.6.1_9.0.img
fastboot erase userdata
Prefer Aroma Installer to be used found on OpenGapps for Google Apps or a Working Keyboard and Launcher, but we don't have that much Space the Full Gapps are at Maximum Capacity.

That's because data is not encrypted with the kernel.
Be sure that you delete data partition once you flashed the modified System Partition.
Code:
fastboot erase userdata
Data will be crypted at next full boot, there is no encryption till now. The boot take for me 5-6min.
Hello, its some months ago but im still trying to get it working. i got to a point it boots into recovery saying "Cant load android system, ur data may be corrupt. If u continue to get this meassage, you may need to perform a factory data reset" Its just getting to my nerves and i want this to finally work.

Hey, just been a while not on XDA.
Have you performed a factory reset? You could also use adb commands to do this, or you use AROMA Installer to erase everything if TWRP don't work on ur tablet.
