Hi, im running CM6 RC2 on Mytouch Slide, I partitioned the SD using Rom manager into 32-512 format (8 GB SD card)/
However, Im thinking about replacing Clockwork Recovery with Amon Ra's latest Recovery So I can have access to the EX2 To EX3 and EX3 to EX4 cache thing.
Now just to let you know, Im not really that tech savy, I don't really know what that does but I think it's supposed to make your phone run faster?
Can anyone please help me and explain if this is necessary? What does the EXT2 To EXT3 do? Will it improve my performance?
Im just really confused about the whole thing, I thought partitioning your SD card alone is what automatically makes your phone have more memory, and now I hear about EX2 to EX3, Im confused. HELP PLEASE.

2 days ago i downgraded my HTC Desire's Rom to stock Android 2.1
i then rooted the device using unrevoked on linux (backtrack 4)
then i began to flash custom roms to my phone but im now stuck when i try to flash RCMixHD v2.0 ROM to my mobile.
According to the developer, this rom uses a script know as data2ext which i think requires something to be done with the sd card. i think this has to be done
Fat + 1GB Ext4 + 0.3GB Ext4 + 0.1GB Swap
i know this means partitioning my sd card but i really have no idea on how to do it. i have a 4gb sandisk sd card so if anyone could explain i would appreciate it very much
i flashed the A2SD+ Version and it worked but the data2ext version just hung on the htc screen (i diddnt do anything to my sd card)
also do i need a certain radio or kernal? Thanks alot guys
hi all, i have a rooted htc aria running froyo 2.2.ive got a new 16g card coming. i would like to partition. ive read way too much info on doing this, that im now totally confused! i cant figure out what steps this should be done in. ive got everything backed up. im not sure what program to use for the partitioning. have read not to use rom manager. im not sure about how many partitions i should have. after i copy my card contents to pc, where do they go when i copy them back? i just really need someone kind enough to walk me thru this. i have adhd and need specific instructions......thanx

Why do you need to partition buddy? Do you want multiple internal storages, or another reason? I may be able to help here with just a little more info.

In some cases, putting a separate partition on your SD card and formatting to etx3 can be beneficial, especially with the Galaxy S devices. In day-to-day use with others phones though, you'll benefit far more from the extra storage than having multiple partitions. Do you have a Galaxy S mate?

To Enable A2SD:
Backup your applications
Backup your sdcard
Partition your sdcard with ROM Manager with an ext partition option. (ROM manager is in Market)
This should start a special mode of clockwork recovery, which will partition the sdcard.
That's the only reason you'd want to partition your card, so that if you're running out of memory you can move some of your apps to the SD card. ROM Manager is very easy to use, but I'll be here if you need me Good luck!

To follow onto this question. 1st time droid user, limited linux knowledge. I am running 2.2 on a brand new optimus t(mobile). I plan on rooting using z4root and flashing ROM (maybe megatron). Sdcard new (unused) only thing I have done with the phone is install a bunch of apps (which I can replace) and load my contact/gmail account.
I notice that my phone indicates 143kb internal available, so I assume I will have space limitations soon. It is my understanding that one of the benefits or rooting and putting on custom rom is the ability to have your phone recognize portions of the sd card as internal memory and, thus, "create" more internal space.
Considering my phone and my desire, can I go through the process of 1) rooting (z4root) 2) backup (custom recovery) 3) flash new rom/kernal 4) dump back up from sdcard onto PC via card reader 5) Use your above method to partition card?
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated, including partition types/sizes, process, procedure....or just tell me if I am an idiot and am way off base.

I always see IC roms looking for an ext-4 partition during installation. I never made one. Everything works fine, is that just to make apps moved to the SD faster, or? Basically wondering if I should do this and if so if any steps are needed other than using gparted or somesuch and wiping and reinstalling the ROM.
I appreciate your kind replies to my n00b question. I only ever made special SD partitions pre-froyo or to lag fix the SGS1.

You don't need to do anything. It is formatting the phone memory to ext4. Don't need to make ext4 on your SD card.

1. Internal phone storage & phone memory, what is the difference and is there any mods people are doing with them as far as combining or something?
2. SD partitioning... are people still doing this and if so what are you recommending?

internal storage, is basically yours to use, add your music pics or whatever, just like how u use an sd card, phone memory aka application memory is reserved for apps only, no way of combining them, dont need to anyways, sd partitioning i never tried but i think its says it all, dividing your sd card into two or more partitions..make seem like you have two or more, u can reserve one just for music or pics or roms

I came from from the G1 where it was standard practice to partition into fat32/ext/swap. Since moving to the G2x I have not needed it. Phone is super fast without swap and more than enough space for apps.
As for combining internal and external SD cards, I don't think I've seen that yet...

I've never seen them combined but don't know if you can because if you remove the microsd, it would get all screwy.
I don't even use internal unless the rom does. I have a collection of apks/walls/music and my titanium files on my SD... everything else is expendable.

and with those on the SD are you using them just anywhere on the SD or do you have an EXT 4 partition?

Internal phone storage is where your system files are stored. It is also where apps from the market are installed. Phone memory is utilized by the stock roms as the default "sdcard". By default this is where your photos, music, documents, etc are stored. There is also an external slot for a physical sdcard. This is actually mounted to /sdcard/_ExternalSD with a stock rom.
There is no need to partition the external sdcard. There is enough space on the phone by default and it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle to make it work.
I don't think you need swap with this phone.

Thank you for clearing this up, so in clockwork recovery why does it support EXT 4? Is that just the format it saves a back-up in?

No. Ext4 is a type of filesystem used commonly in Linux, just like FAT and NTFS are used with Windows setups. There are some roms that will mount your system as, or even fully format your system into a ext4 filesystem. Clockwork supports that filesystem, meaning it can be used to install ext4 roms.

Thank you for your help, one last thing... to run these do you need an EXT 4 partition, or is that completely different? What makes the ROM to be EXT 4?

No you simply flash like you would any other rom. If the rom actually formats your drives to ext4 i beleive you will have convert back to ext3 in order to flash an ext3 rom. There is a conversion utility somewhere on here if you search around. Someone else wanna chime in to verify about the need to convert back to ext3?

Yeah I read about the EXT 3 to EXT 4 dilemma on here via CM7 when it was upgraded from an overnight build or something... I think it had to do with restoring apps or data? Really appreciate your information, this finally clears up the confusion

Plz help guys: i've got an inspire 4g & was using the 8g card provided with the device but bought i 16g. I don't have my laptop now so i had to save a few files to internal sd, pop the 16g & copy the files to the card, put the 8g back in, copied some more & did it all again. W/O a cpu i didn't know how else to do it. I used CM7, Absolution, MIUI, VU & never formatted or partitioned my card but i want to on this 16g card, i want ext4 but have no clue how to go about it. Should i have done that before i copied all my data from my 8g to 16? Can someone plz do me the favor of helping me out and/or explain what fomatting does & how tr partition. geez thats dedication lol! As for going to EXT4, I don't believe it's necessary for all roms, many support both EXT4 and EXT3. I know it used to be a widely covered thing in the changelogs and OPs of ROM threads but lately they've been vanishing. This next bit you must understand is typically what I do before flashing a ROM and I don't believe it touches anything on your SD card but just be cautious if you have anything you really need on the SD card when doing this. I know ARHD's superwipe (found in the ARHD thread) will format everything to EXT4. There is also a full wipe 1.5 (search full wipe 1.5 and you should find the thread) that also formats you to EXT4..Again, be aware this will wipe your phone, I don't think your SD card but will wipe phone and require the flashing of a ROM afterwards. There is probably an easier way to do it but like I said I use the full wipe 1.5 before full wiping and flashing a new rom so my stuff is always EXT 4. hope that helps!

Ok, so if do i have to do anything to go to ext4 or will i automatically be using ext4 file system if the ROM I'm flashing is ext4?

The 1.5 full wipe will wipe the entire phone, it's not the end all wipe you should use when full wiping but it will give you the EXT4 formatting that you want. I use the 1.5 full wipe then I wipe data, cache, dalvik cache and battery stats before I flash a new rom. In principle, yeah everything on your SD card should be safe since I typically delete everything but my photos and back-ups off my SD card before wiping and it's all there afterwards so you should be safe in that regard. I don't goof around with partitions though so someone else who is more comfortable it going to have to chime in here.
