Is it possible to remote control the Xoom with another Android device like a Desire or similar?
Rather than buying a bluetooth keyboard/mouse or something - I wanted to be able to hook it up to the TV and then remote control it to change Music/TV shows/movies etc.

I have just bought my xoom yesterday and was wondering if this was possible. A google took me to your post.
I assumed this would be simple as they are both android play, and there are many android apps for controlling vlc, xbmc etc. so why not the xoom, seen a it does have a hdmi out

I did see that there is a vnc server. That i could install on the xoom but I don't want a full remote destop, just media controls. Is there even an application for this?

which VNC app was that - and also do you need to be rooted? the couple I glanced at said *ROOT*
I was actually thinking of this last night for a BT mouse (using my evo as a BT mouse on the xoom)
I am also looking for this.
My scenario is this:
I recently bought a cheap headrest holder so that the Xoom can be used as a backseat entertainment center, but it would of course be extra cool if I could use my rooted Desire Z/G2 as a remote from the frontseat to start/stop movies etc, maybe via Bluetooth or something.

that sounds awesome, i cant believe there isn't much out for this. Especially as the xoom has a hdmi out (which works flawlessly btw)

Hey, I've been searching for something similar. We just ditched cable and are using my Transformer as a media center. Would be great to use my DX as a remote to switch YouTube videos, etc. Anything out there? Still looking.

Just a thought. Wiimote Controller gives you a free down and dirty remote control. Not nearly as nice as a Bluetooth keyboard but its extremely cheap and cool for playing games on the big screen as well as controlling YouTube/leanback

I've been pondering something along these lines. Only I would use the new wifiDirect API. Only downside is both client and server would have to be wifiDirect capable.

Awesome idea. i´m searching for something like that since i have a xoom (and a lg optimus black, also wifiDirect compatible).
why not integrate a fallback to vnc if no wifiDirekt device? direct connection over vnc is simple if one device tethers to the other.

Hi,
I want to set up a whole house media center, I have a xbmc server running in my house and a windows 7 pc which I can stream from also.
I have seen applications for andriod like 2player and skifta which allow me to stream music from these devices and it offers the ability to stream to other devices.
Can anyone advise me how I could set up a second android phone as a receiver. Since android phones are now so cheap I think it would be quite nice to have multiple android devices to act as receivers around my home.
I would aim to start a application like 2player on my own personal phone, choose my pc or xbmc server as source and then choose the music to play on one of the android phone.
Can anyone advise how to set this up as I don't know how to get the android phones to listen for streams.or even any alternative suggestions?

Hi guys,
Just to update this post last night I spent a bit of time researching this.
I found another app called "bubble upnp" which works as a dlna dmr.
I can see it all starting to come together now. I was able to stream from my xbmc server to another android phone running bubble upnp and using 2player on my own phone as the control point.
I am happy with this but I'm not sure if these are the best app's for this?
Also I think there maybe a small issue with power usage. I don't want to leave WiFi running on the end devices all the time. And or the dlna dmr app if possible.
I think sms gps can remotely turn on WiFi aswell as gps so this maybe a simple work around.
But not sure how to launch an app remotely on android phone.

I would like to know if there is a way to create a linux computer, which would communicate to a Android tablet for input/output functions.
Ideally I envision a small (like mini PC) linux computer sitting in my room. The tablet would be dockable to it it- where it would act as a simple touchscreen interface for the linux computer. Press a button, and the tablet can be removed as an Android tablet.
The tablet could access files (like music) on the linux computer and hopefully control something like a sound card also.
Perhaps a linux computer could run android? The tablet portion would simply be a wireless touchscreen essentially.
Any thoughts?
I haven't done much of that, but I'm sure that it is possible. Also, the Lenovo U1 comes close, although that is a laptop with Windows instead of Linux.
the majority of the functions would not be needed through a hardware I/O interface, all you would need is client server software on both devices.. If you really had to use a hardware interface you could use USB host mode i suppose and create a tcp/ip connection but this could be done over WiFi or Bluetooth.
android devices can already control many features of windows box's like vlc remote, xbmc, boxee and many more, it can also control the desktops mouse..
Linux wise, it shouldn't be much different..
You could just create a custom ui with loads of buttons that go to macros on the machine doing things like volume 0 -50 -100% etc

What about more of the tablet just being the remote for a computer basically.
Take sound processing for instance- Android only does 2 channel and has very little in processing abilities- power amp is the most I've seen.
In a computer environment however, you can have way more channels, and lot more options like crossovers, time delay, parametric EQ, filters, etc. Things I doubt are possible on an android since they often require sophisticated sound cards not to mention eat up battery if they were possible.
What I want is to have a computer do that processing work, but have a simple tablet control the programs on the computer. I'd prefer to not have a custom UI since I like how people are very comfortable with android and it works very well. Also- perhaps you could use your phone to also control the computer.
I envision this:
A user would be laying in their bed, grab the tablet and select some music from the computer hard drive. Then they could control the sound and playback devices from the tablet. The processed sound from the computer goes to a home receiver as a digital signal, and the room fills with perfect sound. Then they decide they want to watch a blue ray. They toss it in the computer and it plays on their tablet with the sound coming from the receiver.
Have you thought about running vnc. or another type of remote desktop software , you could have the desktop wired up to the receiver etc , and just tell the computer to play the music or movie from the tablet .
Most remote desktop software have very crappy frame rates so playing back video this way kinda sucks but logmein ignition does surprisingly well on my tab211 when controlling my mac to do very similar things

Sounds like what I do with my android tablets via Skifta (free on Android Market0 using DLNA protocol.
Skifta app is installed on my EVO3D phone, Kindle Fire (running ICS Beta), and TF201.
When Skifta starts, you select your media source. In my case, 10TB Synology 411j running built-in DLNA media server.
Then select the Playback device. Which could be the tablet itself, my HTPC (XBMC/win7 connected to my home theater), or straight to my TV (Samsung LN46C750 has ethernet and accepts DLNA push request.)
Once source and playback targets are set, I just browse to whatever music or video I want and boom,it plays.
Highly recommend the Synology rigs. They also have built-in Dynamic DNS and OpenVPN server. Their DS Audio app (also free) allows my phone to connect back to my NAS over cellular network and play any song on the NAS via streaming.
Heck, if you plug an USB sound card like the SIIG audiowave 7.1 into the Synology's USB port, it can be an DLNA audio playback device, too.
I don't see many posts about remote desktop but I've found that using my Surface RT + remote desktop to connect to my Windows 8 Pro computer at home is an amazing way to work. The touchscreen even works to navigate the remote computer.
And, since the micro hdmi on the surface supports 1080p, I can connect to a full size screen.
Does this actually work fine then? It's what I plan on doing tbh, I have a media centre PC under my TV that I want to install Windows 8 Pro on and use Remote Desktop.

it works very well. I do prefer the classic RDP client over the new RT one though because of easier touch gestures.

The screen on the htpc will lock when you rdp in. If you want to see the screen on the tv and your surface you'll have to use remote assistance.

Doesn't bother me too much... although it'd be good to have both, I just want tot have the option there to run Intel apps *if* I ever had the need.
It's actually awesome! I use Vuze a lot for movies and such. I have them saved on my computer, and use the network link to move them to my Surface. I was thinking I would need to do it thru the SD Card, but this is much easier

Is it possible to use the older RDP client and enable monitor spanning to remote connect using the tablets screen as well as a 1080p monitor?
For the sake of argument, could you use the remote desktop to use image editing software such as Photoshop through the Surface? Obviously, the screen is probably way too small in terms of both physical size and resolution to really be of much use but for less complex editing it would be awesome...

Bear in mind that the Surface RT doesn't have a stylus digitizer, so you'd be stuck with capacitive touch or mouse+keyboard for input (although now that I think about it, you can probably use a Wacom USB tablet with the Surface's USB port...) but in general, yes you could do this. I already have Remote Desktop pinned to my Surface's taskbar (along with Powershell, which also allows a different kind of remote access).

That is good to hear! My dilemma has been that I want a portable device so that I'm not glued to my desk for the majority of the day but the major obstacle has been finding a tablet that can actually do what my computer does. Remote Desktop sounds like an answer.
What would the frame rate be stable enough to remote my computer and remote desktop from work with no lag?
For example, internet browsing on chrome or watching a youtube video through remote desktop.

Or you can download google chrome and the app for remote desktop for chrome....Works pretty good for me.....should work fine for surface....or RT...
You should search the forum - there is a thread on Remote Desktop, and it explains how to use Remote Apps, which imho, is the best way to utilize x86 apps on your surface RT...

I get little to no lag running Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc. For the few times that I actually need to run an x86, this is the way to go. Do not expect to stream movies, or music from your desktop - although, I guess it depends on your connection - I have my home laptop connected to Linksys G router (im sure if I upgraded to N, it might be faster).
I found an interesting company (Mikogo) who have launched a cloud based Windows 8 desktop (which is actually Windows Server 2012). This doesn't have a windows 8 app but runs through HTML. In theory this would be great as it says you can install your own apps so is less restrictive than Cloudon and Onlive Desktop if you've used those on other platforms.
I requested an account and could then access a desktop via HTML5 using IE on my Windows 8 PC. However it doesn't work on my Surface RT browser (Metro or desktop) as the mouse cursor is not captured for some reason (I've tried via the touchpad and a mouse via USB). Note that even on a PC the performance is slow, although this is a beta.
If anyone wants to try this out I'm curious why it doesn't work in the RT IE10 browser but it does on the desktop. I did feed this back to Mikogo but they don't have an RT device to use (they suggested I try another browser on RT )
VNC has already been ported. Does the job, can be controlled by either device PC or RT.

As the title says, I'm after one of the following:
1. the ability to emulate a Android TV/Google TV/Chromecast receiver on my android PC (I've seen this ability on other android mini PCs)
2. an app which I can use to control my Android PC in an intuitive way.
I would prefer 1 as this will allow me to use existing apps out there (Android Remote Control, Google TV) which are intuitive and well made. I've see that this is possible on other Android Mini PCs (via turning on an option in the settings menu)
I'm not interested in those bluetooth/wlan mouse/keyboard apps. I'm more after something that allows swiping, has buttons such as home etc. I'm currently using a bluetooth keyboard/mouse which works well. But I'm after something that'll utilise my phone instead. I have an Android and iPhone.
I found some apps however they have the following limitations:

I use droidmote for my mini droids, Google playstore is your friend, am well pleased with it! Uses Wi-Fi to connect to your droid so plenty stable and fast

Not a phone app but if your device is rooted, you can install an app called webkey that lets you remote control it from another computer's Web browser. It will display the entire desktop and let you control it using your mouse and keyboard.
