General [Q] about ROM Development. - Captivate General

Just a general question about the future of the rom's and kernel we use in our phones.
Once the official ATT release of froyo, will the devs continue still to concentrate more on the I9000 froyo for our phones (and future releases)? Will there be any reason to cook something from the ATT release after they handicapped it?
Just curious on your opinion, and devs.

what can I do to help

I procured a 1.2 mytouch when my kaiser hit the skids after a year. since rooting it I have been itching to get a faster, more stacked rom. what can i do to help? Im merely a novice when it comes to developing. but am willing to learn anything that can help with development.
Personally I am not a dev, but I've been lurking around.
There has been way more development done over at the G1/Dream forums. Most devices sold in the US were either G1 or the myTouch 3G (32B), making the two devices very similar. As a result most of the development stuff ended up in the Dream forum.
The most informative threads for the Dream still apply:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523
Also try Cyanogenmod wiki
Cyangenmod IRC is still one of the best places for ROM devs, even though many have moved on to the Nexus One.
As for the Mytouch 1.2, support for your device is still limited because HTC hasn't released their kernel. But there can still be good work to be done.

New to Captivate ROM suggestions

Good morning folks, as the title says, new to Captivate. Any ROM's that folks would recommend. Currently running 2.2.
I"m going to set this up for my son for Christmas and want it to rock. Using Simple Mobile. Are there any known issues with carriers other than AT&T? Thanks for any input. I appreciate it. Time to root this new toy
get ready for bashing...this is Dev section.,...read the rules before posting...
I would recommend all the roms in dev section, as they all are really good.
Next time ask questions in Q and A section.
read the new user guide and watch the video, then hang your head in shame.
DO NOT POST IN DEVELOPMENT UNLESS YOU ARE DEVELOPING!
People don't like when you ask which ROM is best, this is a general nono in the world of XDA. The best thing to do is just do a lot of reading and make the decision for yourself. This way you will have learned a lot of interesting things, and the devs will be happy as well. Hopefully not too many people completely tear you apart for this thread... If you read enough you will find what you are looking for. Good luck.
honestly though, ive just been using the latest leaked stock roms, rooting, removing bloat, and adding modified kernel and running ext4. been beyond happy
Anything from The Collective is excellent, but thats just my opinion.
Cyanogenmod is probably the most popular, a good choice as well
In before lock...
This is akin to going to a sports forum and asking "which team is the best?". It tends to just start a flamewar.
Granted, I think there are things that do differentiate some ROMs over others, and give them advantages... some people might argue it comes down to preference/priorities though. My priorities were:
- HSUPA (eliminating all I897 "stock" ROMs)
- Simple/stock-ish theme (eliminating a ton of other ROMs)
- Stability/reliability
For that reason, I've been running Apex for a while. Before that I was a fan of DesignGears' Captivate ROMs but he's moved on to other devices.
While there are people running early alpha/beta releases of Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" (ICS) ROMs as daily drivers, the ROMs still are a bit too quirky for my tastes so I'll wait a bit longer.
Well this is the Dev section as others have mentioned...but I know how confusing it is to get lost in this vast sea of roms...so I will tell you what I felt the best ROM...well apex 11.1 is the best in my point of view
I go bake a batch of Christmas cookies and y'all have a field day in Development - moved to general and closed.

CyanogenMod for Galaxy R

We could possibly convince the CM team to cook CM for our device too. We need to request them in their forums.
Please add your requests to these threads.

I don't think it's gonna make much difference. None of mods/devs have ever answered to any of those threads.
I think that our guys will port it faster.

The reason is the requests are too few for anyone to notice.
The Devs wont make a ROM for just 5 or 6 people. We need to have a mass request.
Let us give it a try
You may be right, It doesn't harm to try. But I don't think creating new threads is a good idea since we already have....nine of them. Opening new threads will just make mods pissed. We need to chose the one major thread - in section Unofficial Ports (that's the place for unsupported devices), and write there.
I agree with you 100%.
But the question is, which thread do we support?
From what I've seen, the cyanogenmod team won't just take on a new phone like that. Maybe after we have a stable unofficial port, but not til then. Look at how the huawei ideos 1850 progressed, it got a lot of attention after someone ported it for themselves, and now it has official CM. keep going guys but if you really want CM then I think it's better to help get AOSP for R than to spam CM forums...

I absolutely agree, that none gets cm just like that: "-please give us cyanogen!" "-Ok here you go"
(There are already nine threads - every new user seems to want to have his own thread Even I opened one in donators lounge )
Another example. I don't remember what it was for device, but users contacted directly one of cm devs and then created a donation thread, collected money and bought him a phone. Once they got CM development started for real.
I think the max what they can do for us is welcome a new developer from us with this device and let him do CM for R :/. Thats could happen with LG GT540 and there was a veeeeeeeeeeeeery big spam about CM for it.

CM is the beast..
I guess after our device gets ICS it will step into the world of real dev'ing.
If someone has good experience with repos and AOSP + CM7 stuff please help me with my git repo here:
http://github.com/EmoBoiix3/android_device_samsung_galaxyr
Although we don't have many devs who own this device, it feels very nice that we have a couple of members who are willing to put their best efforts to port the ROM.
We could show our gratitude and support when they bring out the early builds by donating. Please show your support friends.

Must need cm7

And regarding the ICS for our phone, I can sense some delay. Samsung leaks firmwares frequently during development. Probably because they know that we guys flash it and report bugs here. It would save them time on testing.
Couple of builds have leaked for Galaxy SII.
None for ours yet. Same with Optimus 2x. The users from O2x forum say that the OEMs are waiting for NVidia to release the sources.
We can expect ICS for i9103 in Q2
^^
thats a sad bit of news
ICS
Official ICS for SGR is due Q1 of 2012. I think only after release of the official rom, devs will start working
Good news as the first Tegra 2 device running Android 4 (ICS) will be on sale starting 15 Jan. 2012.
The device is Acer Iconia Tab A200 and it will be a milestone for a ICS port for all the other devices sharing the same CPU/GPU.

What about CM?
Hello,
Is anyone still developing of the cyanogenmod for Galaxy R GT-I9103?
I'ld like to offer free allocation for your builds on cyanogenmod.su or any new domain you want!
I have over 1K users, who will be happy to test CM7 or CM9 builds, make bugreports and donate.
Maybe you know someone else who develops cyanogenmod, I'll be grateful for any response.
We have few devs that work on AOSP and CM7. Check these threads:

Yes , that's good . If someone in the CM team is good with kernels maybe they can help me
Defy-ing all limits.

Vivid Rom?

I didn't know if i should post this here or on the Devlopment forum but here goes.
I know it'll probably be FOREVER before AT&T releases the ICS update for our devices, if it happens at all. Because of this i rooted my phone and am running Ice Cold Sandwich from Lord Clockan in the forums.
I see that theres been a lot of work in the DHD and Inspire Dev forums on porting One V version of sense and ICS to the Inspire.
Since i'm not a dev I know this question may sound stupid, but would it not be easier to try and port the Vivid ICS and Sense version to the Inspire since it's already been officially released and working? Or would this be too difficult because of the difference in screen size 4.3 vs 4.5?
If screen size matters what about a Sensation port?
If these questions come off as stupid please forgive my ignorance i'm just a curious user.

Please do a search for your answers before you post a question like this as its been discussed nearly 312312 times. The bottom line is this: AT&T is not releasing ICS to the Inspire. However, the Desire is going to get it. This means that when the desire does get it, the devs will have the PROPER source to build off of. So no, you can't port an official ICS ROM from the Vivid or any other device other then the Desire because there will be issues from the source all the way to the drivers and beyond. So what does that mean for us, well that means that we get alpha and beta releases of ICS until the devs get the correct code to fix some of the issues in their ROMs.

I already knew everything you posted. Nothing you've said really answers the question I posted.
I'm not complaining about AT&T not releasing it. Very far from it actually since i'm using a stable ICS ROM.
Contrary to popular belief the Search Forum / Topic function does not work as well as everyone thinks it did. I tried searching using various key words and it all just brought me to the Vivid forum which obviously is not where I want to be.
In your unnecessary rant you say "So no, you can't port an official ICS ROM from the Vivid or any other device other then the Desire because there will be issues from the source all the way to the drivers and beyond." which is obviously BS considering in my OP I mention the fact that Devs are currently porting ICS and Sense from the HTC One V for the DHD / Inspire. So not only are they taking the OS and Skin from a different device and porting it to ours, but they're getting it from a device that has not yet even been released to the public.
Would someone else like to answer my question original question without being a "do a search" nazi?
I would imagine that if the Vivid or Sensation ROMs were a viable option to port to the Inspire, then one of the genius devs here would have already thought of it.

buttmaddddd? lolol. Senior members get butt hurt. Indirectly quoting me in other threads. Troll on. Follow the rules of xda and there are no problems. If you take exception with me and how I answer questions please feel free to get buttmadd and send me a PM so it can settled outside of this thread and other threads. I answered your question. There was no rant. The only rant I see here is yours and this one right here. So please keep your troll comments to yourself and out other threads. My original answer is valid and answers your question. I'm sorry it wasn't technical enough or straight from the mouths of a mod or dev, which seems to be what you wanted.
They're already porting it from the sensation XL which is closer to the inspires hardware, move along

Because porting a qHD Rom with a wholly different SoC is hard.

[Q] Rom development, or lack there-of

Anyone wonder why there are devs on this device who are running their own custom roms, yet no one is PUBLICLY developing for it? They all have personal roms, and are unwilling to post them for us to use? Anyone know why?
Well there are no roms and development because we can't. Samsung didn't release the source code for the wifi chip so we can't mess around with stuff as much.
I don't know of anyone having personal roms or anything similar of the sort so where did you hear that? (As rude as that sounds I am genuinely curious)

That explains some of it... But I have seen some members sig lines say things like:
DEVICES I own:
Galaxy Tab +, rom= personal rom
or
my own rom that Im not sharing due to xda community on that forum
I'm not trying to start a flame against any specific member (which is why Im not naming names), Im just curious as to why they dont actually share their work...
Well my take on that is since we can't mess with it they most likely made small changes and there is no point in releasing it or they made a rom and it is there own rom and it has been released thus the 'personal' title.
In terms of the no sharing I think I know who you are talking about and he/she has recently released a rom in the development section if you look.

Lol I DO know and I saw their Rom.... Actually tried flashing it.... I'm glad that they finally released.... I love seeing development explode..? maybe that's just what I'm waiting for??

I am running my own personal created ROM, but as suggested above, the changes are minimal and so releasing the ROM would really be pointless. I am testing tweaks and mods here and there, but I really haven't found something super beneficial worthy of being released to the community.
Once Samsung releases some wifi driver source (or ICS source), then development *should* pick up.
