[Q] help me deciding these android babies - General Questions and Answers

I want to purchase a phone but I am not sure which one to take-
here are my questions and help me clear these issues..ty..
I want to purchase a new android based touchscreen phone and I have narrowed down to htc desire, acer liquid ferrari and samsung galaxy S
I know all of these phones cater to a different niche altogether but I have a few basic questions regarding them... Are all of these having 3.5mm jacks ?
Can their ROMs be updated to Froyo especially for liquid e ferrari ?
Also which phone has the best sunlight legibility ?
Here are few specific questions -
Question 1 - htc desire is a gr8 all round fone.. So after doing an official FOTA from htc india website..
Can I root the phone and customize it with apps and other things then wat is d probability of messing things up ? And is it gonna run stable with a 16gb class 4 or above micro sdhc card ?? (sandisk or kingston)
Question 2 - acer liquid e ferrari is highly stylish phone and i love it to bits for the great paint job and everything.. But it has lots of useless apps and preloaded junk..
Can it be rooted and then flashed to a custom froyo based ROM ??? Is it possible coz no F0TA updates r there for froyo on this model by acer..
Question 3 - in casee of samsung galaxy s i've heard that its lag is reduced by rooting the phone and applying a lag fix.. Will this work with a custom froyo firmware ?
Thanks for patiently reading this and answering to these queries..
PS - sorry for the weird formatting was typed with nokia n97 in opera mini....

You could answer all of your own questions with a few minutes (maybe an hour or so) of using google and youtube. I just did a quick search around not even really trying and found out more information on some of this stuff than you even asked for.

Hmmm i agree but still i need some more help...

i agree that lot of stuff can be found if i properly research but i've got my university mid term exams going on so you can imagine im busy studying to improve my grades...
Also opening heavy webpages with a 2G network on an average speed of 120 kbps on this lousy n97 is tough...
I would greatly appreciate if you could 'rally a few specialists on the forum to my help'
It would save me a lot of time and tension...
Or you could answer a few of the questions according to all the research that you did, I would be very very indebted to you..
Thanks...

TV Tuner and/or GPS built in WM5 PPC to replace HTC Uni...

Hi,
I'm finally selling my MDA Pro (eBay item 300008341567 if anyones interested...) and looking for a replacement. To which I'd like to ask if any of you have any knowledge of these phones....
I like the idea of the TV tuner, which the G-Smart has, but can't find anywhere in the UK to get it, does anyone have any opinions on this phone, know where I can get one, or know whether there are any other phones with TV Tuner built in. Also, does this phone have GPS? Some reviews I read say yes, some no. (It's the black one I'm after, not the orange square one.)
The other phone is the Mio A701, purely as it's one of the only WM5 phones I can see that are quite fast and has built in GPS...
Does anyone know of anything else on the market now, or soon, that has a TV Tuner and/or GPS built in, that is a WM5 touch screen, pocket PC phone?
Cheers!!
Hello, i will never recomend you to buy any Gigabyte / i-teq phone before you read all my comments and also from others about this phone at pocketpcdubai.com , then you will know what kind of crap it is and what kind of support you will get, NONE.

What problems did you have with the phone? Software issues, Hardware issues, or both?

Sorry, I know you said comments at pocketpcdubai.com... but I can't get to that site, throws up not found errors
You might want to take a look at ETEN G500 (no tuner but pretty fast and has GPS) also the HP 6900 which has everything except a descent screen.
Any way in my opinion, most phones with GPS today are lacking in other features (usually WiFi) and it's better to get a BT GPS and a good
phone.

Hi,
I never really had any problems with the Universal, it's a complicated phone so will never run truely perfect. Like most things, you look for a fault, you'll find one...
The only things I could mention that were annoying, is it would sometimes take a while to ring and notify me of incoming calls, even with patches and fixes that others produced.

Thank's for your input!
I know what you mean about the "all in one" but it's just getting to a stage where my belt is starting to wear out with all the extras that I want to carry in my pockets!
I've seen that EOPS SDIO Tuner, but have only been able to find a foreign supplier for them, do you know if there's anywhere in the UK as yet? Think I'd sooner have the GPS onboard, and get a TV Tuner as an extra.
dont pay too much for a SDIO tv tuner here they already set the date to when they stop broadcasting analog tv alltogether
Hi every one.

Hello
Hi User22.
I was about 98% decided to go in for iteq x bond or gsmart as they hv come officially in India...but I read yr posts at pocketpcdubai and was horrified..though there are not much comments made on the handset, I thought what u hv posted shd be atleast 60% correct and hence decided to keep the Universal..But now there is a new ROM so do u hv any other opinions...?
Yes i have more opinions: Just received a new phone from i-teq, exchanged on warranty, it is working the same very bad way, including the lates rom. Also i allready tried the lates Ubiquio rom without any improvement.
I-teq still not answering any e-mails since 2 month ago to me and others users.
Go for any other company but NOT i-teq / Unitec / Gigabyte ( this one is the real maker but they also don't answer to any one that i know from differents countries).

[Q] A few questions from a noob

First I just want to say hello. I'm new to android and this is my first post. I have a few questions for you guys.
1. In switching from an iPhone 4 to android but I need some recommendations on a phone. I'm looking at the atrix, streak and inspire 4g. What do you recommend even if it's not one of those 3?
2. I have jailbroken my iPhones for the last 4 years but I know nothing about rooting. Can you point me to something that explains what it is, how it's done, advantages and disadvantages, if there's a difference between phones how it's done, and just some tips and tricks?
3. Anything that I didn't ask and you feel like I should know just post it.
Thanks in advance guys.

Sorry I can't help with phone selection it is your task to choose one, but I can tell you what should you consider:
- the RAM should be about 512 MB
- Android version (2.2 or higher is the best)
- anything you think is important (camera for example)
1 - check gsmarena.com, youtube, etc and compare, check, etc and see what u need...personally i feel u should either go with HTC (since their phones have the most number of available roms, mods, etc) or go for the SGS or SGS2(i no its not yet out,but still)...atrix if motorola....btw, just check which devices have their own forums here and which have the highest threads and posts...cause that means u will have a lot of support for those respective phones..
2 - there are rooting guides for each phone,so you should get into that after u choose your phone,ul have all the info u need over here...besides, there are tons of other websites, fora and videos( read youtube ) giving basic as well as detailed info about rooting, etc, n trust me, once ur into it, theres no looking back, its the most fun thing ever to keep fiddling with ur phone!
3 - google google and google
What kind of requirements do you need? Full QWERTY keypad, camera, or do you have other requirements to the hardware or display size?
i do not want a physical keyboard. i want something fast and can be hacked quite a bit. im used to my iphone so something physically similar would be nice
Then maybe a Nexus S would be good for you

[Q] Generic Chinese Clone Devices

Ok, so I'm pretty new to this whole Android thing, but I'm not daft and know a think or two about computers and software, so I'm not a complete 'noob'...
However, to spare me the drama of trawling through thousands of pages, I have a few quick concise questions, and would appreciate concise answers.
So I bought a generic handset, branded as an Onyx Dragon though AnTuTu benchmark app tells me its a Yusu... details and specs from Chinavision.com (search Onyx Dragon).
I initially bought it because I needed a new phone (been on a Moto V3 Razr for about 6 years!) so got this cos it was cheap and looked good. Runs Froyo on what I have found to be pretty **** hardware (MT6516, advertised as 416MHz but shown to be around 207MHz, but not sure if this is main CPU or radio core...) with not a lot of RAM. I installed an 8Gb SD card to save the apps and keep as much free internal space as possible, in case the OS supports disc memory (?). The wireless is good and screen works well, but the GPS, navigation and camera are rubbish, but they are not why I bought it; I have a decent camera and I can read a map. Its definitely 'entry level' so I'm not too bothered if I brick it.
Since I got it, and seeing the many cheap 'clones' out there, I'm keen to get into them a bit more and start developing. I already rooted it with z4root, BusyBox and Superuser all installed fine. ROM Manager is running but because I don't know the actual brand I'm not yet running ClockWorkMod (doesn't show up in the list). I'm keen to install Gingerbread or maybe even CyanogenMod 7, but cannot flash the ROM without CWM. Can anyone tell me what phone 'model' I should use for this particular handset?
I can't overclock the chipset, but have been looking at other clones to play with, such as htc Incredible G11i Pro clone from etotalk.com and 'CyberStar' 3G handset with MT6573 650MHz chipset (also from Chinavision).
Does anyone have any knowledge/experience with these clones? They look great and if they work as well as the budget model I have now then there is certainly potential. Sure, they may not be as good as a genuine Galaxy or Nexus, but then the price reflects that. However, as a cheap development platform you can't really go wrong! I'd like to see faster processors and more hardware mod ability such as clocking, just to see what is possible. Anyone tried ICS on one of these? I read elsewhere that if Froyo runs ok on a cheap device then GB should be better. My friend has GB 2.3.3 on a genuine $500 Galaxy S2 and I'd love to show him up with a rooted and clocked clone running ICS for a fraction of the price!!
Well, thats not as concise as I would like, but it covers pretty much everything. One last thing though, I cannot install ES File Explorer 1.6.1, it will download from Market and attempt to install but then fail. The latest version I have is the pre-installed 1.4.2.2. I've tried everything I can think of; downloading on my Mac and copying via USB to install from Astro making sure ES is not running, failed. Tried uninstalling ES with ROM Toolbox having root access and disabled AVG, failed. Tried to launch new version from package options, failed. I have installed ES Task Manager v1.2 but cannot use all the features as it says File Explorer needs to be updated, and needless to say updating it from the prompts failed as well... Any ideas? I'm thinking a flash to GB should include the latest version (or better alternative).
Thanks all in advance!
I don't think it's possible to run ICS on such a low spec'd device. This onyx dragon runs on a 416Mhz ARM9 processor with a 200 Mhz ARM7 GPU. Even the G1 that uses a 528Mhz ARM11 CPU can't run ICS well. I would suggest that you give up on theses crappy chineses devices. If you don't have money you can find a LG Optimus One for 100 bucks on ebay and it is A LOT better than any of these chinese crap phones

Hey all, thanks for the feedback. Basically, sure I don't want to spend a lot being a student, I don't have a lot, but I'm keen to get more out of what I can afford, hence the Chinese crap (yes it is crap but if it does what you need...) : ) just a shame I can't clock mine! Does anyone know if ANY MediaTec chips can be?
Sure, I think running ICS is a bit optimistic, but I'd still like to give GB or C-Mod a go, providing I can get CWM installed. I'd like to compile myself and even think about refining my own version, perhaps slimming down a newer version to run on low performance hardware. What's this about a special cable needed with a 3.5mm jack?
And am I right in thinking Honeycomb was only for tablets, not phones...?

Yes you are right about honeycomb. As for the device. Without kernel source which will never be released due to copyright issues you may have a bit of trouble Modding it. CM only supports authentic devices and not clones as the hardware specs as you learned are faked and never true.

Hi droidscope,
Not all the Chinese phones are crap there are a few very capable phones now entering the market and they are catching up the bigboys rapidly.
For more info & reviews on the latest Chinese phones check over here http://www.gizchina.com/category/phones/ Try to stick with the branded chinese phones such as Zopo, ZTE, Newman etc because there is at least some support where as the direct copy/clones have no support at all. If buying try to get the phone pre rooted because some of the Chinese phone are getting more difficult to root. I would look here http://www.etotalk.com/ if buying and select the MOD ROM $4.99 for most phones then the phone will come pre rooted with working playstore language etc. They do not 1 to 1 copys although some of the phones have more than a passing look of some of the more famous brands. I have used them a few times and they have not let me down be sure to email them first to ask about stock levels though.

This phone is really wonderful
Vote for the idea!
Come on....
i just dont understand why we still dont have a forum for the most powerful phone on market today, already months waiting for it there is some customized rom out there, and in XDA nothing. we need a forum for our "beast" here to speed-up things.
hope administrator can give us some space here...
we need our forum here 4.65-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1 GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD recording.
I'd like to add my voice to this request.
I've just received this great little phone, fired it up and it's amazing...
sticking with mostly stock things for now (other than my usual apps) and since it's mostly in Korean.. I'd LOVE some roms for it... ICS would be lovely

I'm using this phone, too. The phone is really great.
It's very difficult too find roms and howtos about this phone.
I hope there will be a forum for this phone.

im i agree with you peaple^^ i just bought this phone yesterday~ and is amazing!!! but i really want to try others custom rooms~
I agree. I bought the non HD version but it is just a sweet (model SHV-E110S) and I woudl love some customization. Hell Id even pay for some. I am by no means a phone expert but I am running gingerbread FB13 on it and if someone needs a copy of it and can point me in the direction of how to pull from phone or where Kies stored it on my computer id happily send it.

P.S how about an Icon for beer....way off subject I know
Yes, we really need a forum for that kind of phone !
Hey guys, as the proud owner of a SG s2HD LTE. I would like to let you other guys know you can run most of the app's that the android market says are "incompatible". The way to do this is to install Snappz Market, find games like Order and Chaos HD and install (all free on this market), Order and Chaos HD runs very well, the phone does an incredible job running all games!
we really need a forum special for our S II HD LTE

What new android phone should I get?

Hi,
I'm using since many years a LG Optimus 4X HD rooted but with the stock Rom,
I did not find any custom ROM that would be half way up to date and would run well on it.
Now there is kind of a security SNAFU the Stagefright bug (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stagefright_(bug)) that king of makes continuing the use of the phone a No Go that is unless some one points me to a reliably working ROM that would have that bug fixed....
Anyways What new phone should I get to ensure I will not find my self in a similar situation for at least 5+ years using that phone. That means a long therm community support must be to be expected.
Yes I know thats a long time, but for me any non x86 device is just a toy that does not have to do much:
1. Navigation (Navigon)
2. VPN
3. RDP, VNC, ssh client
4. taking pictures
5. playing mp3
6. surfing the web
What I would else require would be a micro-SD card slot.
Now what sounds really well is the http://shop.fairphone.com/fairphone2.html but lets be honest for 530€ I can buy 3 to 4 reasonably cheep smartphoens each time with an up to date android on it. So the price is simply to high.
I would say that a reasonable price for me would be around 300€
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated
